Allure of 3D printing potential turns teen into entrepreneur

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Easton Almond, an eighth grader at Mount Vernon School, has built a small business selling 3D-printed mahjong boards. And he says he is just getting started.

Easton, 14, started his mahjong board business roughly six weeks ago after his mother asked him to print a board for her game nights.

Before mahjong boards became a business, Easton said he was obsessed with remote-controlled cars. He said spending an entire day building a vehicle, then driving it for hours over rocks and hills brought him incredible satisfaction. After burning out a motor by driving a car into a creek with a neighbor, he taught himself to source a replacement motor from the AliExpress website and reinstall it himself.

“It’s just fascinating, just the sheer

speed of them, and I’m not able to drive, so those are basically the best thing [next] to driving,” he said.

That fascination with remote-controlled vehicles led him to 3D printing. Watching a YouTube channel called “rctestflight,” he saw builders fabricating custom parts and components for their own designs. He realized that with a 3D printer, he could manufacture his own parts.

Sandy Springs lays foundation to update plans for future growth

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Residents of Sandy Springs will soon be charting the vision they have for their city over the next 10 to 20 years with an update to its comprehensive plan.

The mayor and City Council at its April 21 meeting officially kicked off the start to update its comprehensive plan for the 2027-2047 planning horizon. The comprehensive plan, known as Next Ten, is the city’s chief policy document that regulates everything from land use, development and capital improvements.

The comprehensive plan update will include a review of the city’s recreation and parks master plan to decide what facilities and programming to invest in. The plans will guide future growth, development and sustainability through community vision and data-driven analysis, Planning & Zoning Manager Michele McIntosh-Ross said.

“This process will include multiple points of [public] engagement through 2026 and into 2027 with an adoption set for [June] of 2027,” she said.

City to celebrate 10 years of popular Lantern Parade

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs will celebrate a decade of its popular Lantern Parade along Morgan Fall Road on May 9.

Those wanting to learn how to create their own lanterns to carry in the parade can attend workshops on May 2 and 3 at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center, 1 Galambos Way. The hands-on workshops will be led by Atlanta artist Chantelle Rytter, founder of the Atlanta Beltline Lantern Parade.

Tickets are $25 per lantern project, and all materials are provided. The workshops are designed for adults and older children who are comfortable using hot glue. Children are required to be accompanied by an adult. Workshops will be held:

• Saturday, May 2: 11 a.m.-2 p.m. and 3 p.m.-6 p.m.

• Sunday, May 3: 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

The city is also offering DIY lantern kits for those who can’t make the inperson workshops. They can be purchased in CityBar. & Cafe at Sandy Springs City Hall from Tuesday-Friday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m., and at the Sandy Springs Farmers Market on April 25 and May 2.

The sky will light up on May 9 during the 10th annual Sandy Springs Lantern Parade along Morgan Falls Road.

On May 9, there will be a preparade party at 6 p.m. at the new Sandy Springs Police Headquarters and Municipal Court Complex parking lot, 620 Morgan Falls Road. The parade steps off at 8:30 p.m. and participants will walk about a mile down Morgan Falls Road to Morgan Falls Overlook Park at the Chattahoochee River. A shuttle service will take people back to the parking lot.

Northside Hospital Atlanta launches expansion project

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Northside Hospital Atlanta in Sandy Springs is undergoing an expansion and renovation of its emergency department. The department will remain open and operational throughout the project, expected to be completed in early 2028.

The $46 million multi-phase project will add 18 treatment rooms, a new entry and triage area and expanded space for emergency care teams. Construction began April 6.

The project includes renovation of approximately 7,815 square feet of existing ground floor space and construction of a two-story, 67,537-square-foot expansion across the ground and first floors. Plans also include a new 17,000-square-foot (54 space) parking structure for emergency department patients and visitors.

The two-story entry lobby with stairs and elevator will connect the ground and first floors and create an enclosed corridor linking the emergency department to the hospital’s main lobby.

“As the Sandy Springs area and surrounding communities continue to experience rapid growth, the need for increased emergency care capacity has become increasingly important,” Chris Munn, director of emergency services for Northside Hospital System, said in a statement.

The emergency department expansion project reflects Northside Hospital Atlanta’s commitment to expanding access to high-quality emergency care while maintaining safe operations throughout construction, Munn said.

Northside Hospital Atlanta is at 1000 Johnson Ferry Road. When it opened in 1970, it had 250 beds. Now it has 621 beds, 4,000 physicians and 14,000 employees, according to its website.

He purchased a $150 printer on sale that Christmas and learned to print things like fidget spinners. He printed a remote-controlled airboat.

“It didn’t work very well, that’s for sure,” he said, “probably because I was using the wrong electronics and didn’t waterproof anything. But I was still young, and I was still learning.”

Easton wasn’t happy with that first 3D printer, and after some research discovered Bambu Lab printers. He can now send programs and operate the printers with his phone. He also has a wide selection of items he can print.

In early March, when his mother,

“She has her friends over all the time to play mahjong,” he said. “She was like, can you make us some boards we can play on our own?”

What began as a single print quickly grew. After early boards were a hit with family friends, Easton listed them on Facebook Marketplace and built a Shopify storefront. His mother launched an Instagram account for the venture, named “MeJong.” Within weeks, orders were arriving at a rate of roughly four per week.

The operation now runs on Bambu Lab printers. One of the printers has logged nearly 5,000 hours and is still running. Each board takes about 2 1/2 hours to print.

One of Easton’s fans is Gabby Spatt of Sandy Springs. She is the founder of

Let’s Rack and Roll, a mahjong lesson and party company. She is also the author of the children’s books, “Bubbe and Bams” and “Grandma Dottie’s Dots” about grandmothers sharing their love of mahjong with their granddaughters. She met Easton and his mom when they followed her business on Instagram.

“When I learned Easton’s story and being an Atlanta-based 14-year-old and a mahjong entrepreneur, I knew I wanted to support him,” she said. “I love supporting young entrepreneurs. His newest creation, ‘the discarder,’ also solves a problem in the game we all ask, ‘Who discarded last?’”

Easton’s parents are working to secure a patent for the discarder.

Easton said he has learned everything he knows about 3D printing technology on YouTube and with artificial

intelligence tools.

“I wouldn’t have been here doing any of this had it not been for YouTube,” he said.

He already has a keen business sense and is watching the manufacturing market for the next hot product he can make with his 3D printers.

“It’s definitely going to start dying down,” he said of mahjong’s popularity. “I’m going to have to find the new trend.”

Longer term, Easton wants to scale the operation into a larger 3D printing business like those he sees on YouTube.

“My end goal in life is to own a 3D printing business that has, like, however many printers,” he said. “I’m very intrigued with the guys that have 100 printers in their farms … I love that. I think it’s just very cool, and I always like finding solutions to problems.”

Input from the public, an advisory committee and Sandy Springs officials will be crucial in outlining a vision for the city, according to city officials. Five public open houses are planned between June and January.

In addition, people will be able to give input at city happenings like the upcoming Lantern Parade, at City Green summer concerts and at the Fourth of July party.

“We are having our first open house in June. We will be at pop ups; at the farmers market and other events we have. We’ll be engaging with focus groups and stakeholders’ meetings … and of course we will meet with the mayor and City Council and Planning Commission throughout this process,” McIntosh-Ross said.

Last month, the mayor and council approved a $1.1 million contract to Rhodeside & Harwell Incorporated (RHI) as consultant for the plans’ updates. RHI was the consultant for the city on the Next Ten comprehensive plan in 2017 and in 2022.

The City Council also approved Mayor Rusty Paul’s recommendations for members to the Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee. The 14-member

panel will provide feedback and offer ideas to the consultant during the planning process, the mayor said.

“But it is in no way intended to replace the public comments and the public access to the process and getting that general public feedback,” Paul said.

Paul said hundreds of people are willing to serve on the committee. To pare down the number, he said he selected people who would be implementing the updates, such as those on the Planning Commission,

the Board of Appeals and the Sandy Springs Development Authority.

He also said he selected engaged citizens connected to large networks of people, such as the business community, school groups, homeowner associations, members of the Hispanic and Asian communities, and those from faith communities.

In the past, members of the small business community have served on the committee, Paul said, but not anyone from the city’s Fortune 500 companies. He said he was recommending Tyler

Ewing from Switch Consulting as an appointee because she is connected to companies like Mercedes-Benz and Newell Brands.

“We can get some of their thoughts because they are major employers,” Paul said.

The company soon added AP History Bootcamps to the yearly rotation. And since then, we’ve expanded our offerings to include SAT and ACT group courses, accelerated bootcamps, online video courses, newly expanded academic tutoring and AP tutoring options, and much more! The founders still teach all the SAT and ACT group classes (which is highly unusual in the test prep industry).

We pride ourselves in being a boutique tutoring agency with a small, highly experienced team— trained by Brian and Silvia—that has over 160,000 hours of experience in handling the private fine-tuning tutoring that about 66% of our

students do after taking a group class. We pay at the top of the market to retain top instructors who live and breathe these tests, be it by taking the real exams each year, dissecting tests that are hot off the presses, and/ or helping to continually refine our curricula and materials.

Edison Prep is frequently invited to speak about test prep and admissions at high schools, national education conferences, and education podcasts, and Brian served as a founding board member of the National Test Prep Association from 2020-2025.

And we are fortunate to continue growing our offerings! In 2023, we expanded our office space and added team members; in 2024, we reworked our SAT curriculum to align with College Board’s new digital SAT. And in 2025, we revised our ACT materials to reflect the ‘enhanced’ test format that debuted in September 2025.

We provide numerous free services—including weekly free mock SAT/ACT tests and live parent info sessions on college admissions. We also built a free scholarship database www.meritaidgrids.com that connects students with merit scholarships at over 200 colleges that are students are guaranteed based purely on their academic statistics!

All our services are available both in-person at our office and virtually. While most of our students are in greater Atlanta, technology allows us to serve families around the world: we have worked with students in 38 states and nine countries!

Backpack Buddies of Metro Atlanta.

Four years and over 1.5 million meals later, the young nonprofit has captured the hearts and minds of the community, while aiming to eliminate weekend hunger for Atlanta’s food-insecure children.

“This mission cannot exist without the support of the community,” says Board Chair Ron Kirschner. “Together, we are putting these children in a better position to reach their full potential, which is exactly what the world needs. Last year, I highlighted what to do if you are injured in a car wreck. This year, I wanted to explain two key types of insurance you need to have in place before anything happens. Oftentimes, people shop for car insurance based on the price rather than on the type of protection provided. We have cases where someone is severely injured or even killed, but the other driver has a $25,000 “minimum limits” policy and the client does not have coverage that protects them when

this happens. Here are two types of insurance that you need to protect yourself if someone else injures you in a wreck:

(1) Underinsured Motorist (“UM” or “UIM”) Coverage. This is insurance that protects you if the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.

There are two types of UM insurance: “Add-On” and “ReducedBy.” You always want to have “AddOn” insurance coverage because it goes on top of or adds to the at-fault driver’s insurance. I recommend that your UM coverage match your liability coverage, which is the insurance that protects you if you cause a wreck.

(2) Medical Payment Coverage (“Med-Pay”). This is insurance that covers medical bills if you are injured in a car wreck. If you have health insurance, this can be used to cover your co-pays, deductible, and co-insurance. I recommend that you have at least $10,000 in MedPay coverage.

Master Gardeners to join annual Carter Work Project

Since 2009, Fulton County Master Gardener Extension Volunteers, led by the Central Fulton Master Gardeners (CFMG), have been involved in all homes built by Habitat for Humanity in Fulton County, reaching the milestone of 600 homes in 2025.

The extensive training received in the UGA program prepared the Master Gardeners to:

• Select plants for individual homes

• Supervise the installation of trees, rain gardens, shrubs and sod

• Teach volunteers and homeowners how to install and maintain their landscapes

In the first week of May this year, the CFMGs are very excited to be involved in the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project, the annual international, multi-home build that brings volunteers from around the world to finish homes in one week. Only one city is chosen each year, and Atlanta was selected in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Habitat for Humanity International and to honor Georgia’s own Carter family.

The couple first became involved with the organization in 1984 when the former president was out on a run and noticed a team of volunteers working at a site in New York. The Carters spent the next 35 years as volunteers with Habitat.

This year, more than 700 volunteers will join the Atlanta Habitat base to complete 24 singlefamily homes and town homes (a first) in the new Langston Park development in Sylvan Hills, established in 1920.

During standard builds, the Master Gardeners have a budget of $300-350 per house to purchase all landscaping plants, and two to three CFMGs oversee volunteers during installation. For the International build, the budget is $550 per home which allows room to better integrate the neighborhood appearance while offering some individuality and upgraded plant selection. Because there will be more volunteers than usual, only one CFMG will be in charge of each home with a few floating helpers. Experience with Habitat and the extensive training from UGA has prepared the Master Gardener team for success in creating beautiful homes for these families.

that affordable homeownership is foundational for stable families to build wealth, join the surrounding community and live with dignity.

Because it takes more than volunteers to offer a new home, many organizations, businesses and communities around the world unite to bring families the homeownership they deserve.

The City of Atlanta embraced Habitat in 1983 and has helped over 6,000 individuals and families by building over 1,700 homes here in Georgia, but their support goes beyond a safe haven. After being accepted following the application process, families receive a 30-year, no-interest mortgage. They are required to contribute 250 hours building their own home and attend 17 courses in financial education and home maintenance. Over the years, Atlanta Habitat has seen 361 mortgages paid in full and estimates that the average equity return for the home is $212,000. In 2025 alone, Atlanta Habitat awarded $9,000 to three new associated businesses and over $28,000 in educational scholarships to their families. Upon completion, the families receive detailed information on how to care for their home and landscape and can reach out for more support.
