Milton city officials revise speed limits along select streets

Hall of Fame goes to mat for Hanrahan

By HANNAH YAHNE hannah@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — To remain aligned with the city’s updated radar permit, the Milton City Council approved revisions to speed limits on local streets March 2. City Council members Doug Hene and Juliette Johnson were absent from the meeting. Radar permits are approved by the Georgia Department of Public Safety and enable police enforcement of posted speed limits. The speed limits on New Providence Road, Thompson Road and Bethany Bend will be reduced from 45 mph to 40 mph. Another element of the radar permit was expanding school zones. The Cambridge High School zone along Bethany Bend has been expanded to include King’s Ridge Christian School. The speed limit within the school zone has been reduced to 30 mph to be 10 miles an hour below the posted speed, rather than five.

By ANNABELLE REITER annabelle@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Milton resident John Hanrahan will receive a lifetime service award at the Georgia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame May 2. A Virginia state champion and two-time All-American at Penn State, he was the first Nittany Lion to win more than 100 wrestling matches. He still holds the record for most career victories with 113. He won two conference titles at Penn State and appeared in four NCAA championships. After college, he continued to wrestle with Team USA in international competition. He attended the Olympic trials in 1984 and 1996 and fell just short both times after making the finals. He returned to competing later in life and won a 2016 United World Wrestling Championship in Walbrzych, Poland. He beat a 10-time world champion to bring home the victory. Hanrahan will head out to Cleveland for the NCAA wrestling championships later this month. He says the national meet every year is a sort of pilgrimage for Penn State wrestling alumni. “I’ve always tried to help and get involved with local wrestling programs, just kind of as a legacy or testament to the great coaches I had,” he said. “It was the most important part of my life, being part of that [program]. The coach really was like a father figure to all of us, Rich Lorenzo.”
