Student athletes join fight against mental health stigma By SARAH COYNE sarah@appenmedia.com MILTON, Ga. — Members of the Cambridge High School girls lacrosse program are destroying the stigma behind mental health by raising awareness at their third annual Run for the Mind 3K fun run fundraiser. On April 1, teammates, family members and residents of Milton met at Bell Memorial Park to raise awareness about mental health struggles in student athletes. Partnering with Morgan’s Message, the team wants the fun run to encourage student athletes to

speak out about their mental health struggles and help end the stigma surrounding it. “When we said we want to do something tapping into mental health and bring awareness, it was like the perfect fit,” varsity head coach Pam Masinko said. Masinko said she hopes to bring the mindset on and off the field as they continue their season as the reigning 5A-6A GHSA State Champions. “Our lacrosse program has celebrated a lot of good memories lately… but this third annual Run for the Mind is probably one of the proudest memories,” Masinko said.

MILTON, Ga — The Cambridge boys basketball team is holding its fifth annual Mulch Madness fundraiser this spring, hoping to raise $5,000 for the team. Members of the community place orders of mulch through a link provided by the team, who partners with Lowe’s to assist with deliveries of larger orders. Orders can be placed until the end of April. Deliveries take place Mondays through Thursdays, where the freshmen, sophomores and juniors on the team stop by to spread the requested mulch and engage with the community. Head coach David Akin said the fundraiser is all about the team providing a service to the community. The most important goals are to build the players’ life skills through interacting with each other and members of the community. “We always talk about learn to earn,” Akin said. “Our community wants to give these boys an opportunity to work, and I think that’s pretty special. And for the team, working together like this opens up lines of communication that may not have been opened until a later date.”
