Wellstar exec provides update on status, COVID-19 response By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Wellstar North Fulton is now on a better track for treating COVID-19 cases, according to Wellstar North Fulton Hospital President JonPaul Croom. Croom, along with Family Medicine Physician Dr. Jignesh Dholaria, spoke June 19 at a virtual panel Roswell Inc hosted on the pandemic. The North Fulton facility was one of the last in the Wellstar Health System to get a positive COVID-19 case, but like most hospitals, it struggled in the early days to get adequate personal protective equipment, Croom said. One of the main issues behind this shortage, he said, was that their usual PPE manufacturers were stationed in Wuhan, China, where the virus first surfaced. But local efforts to shelter-in-place and socially distance helped flatten the curve for hospitals like Wellstar North Fulton relatively quickly, Croom said. “One of the benefits that we had in the Roswell area is that many people live in single homes,” he said. “It’s easier to socially distance, and many people have jobs that were able to telecommute.” Wellstar North Fulton was also able to add 50 negative pressure rooms to its facility during the outbreak by using HEPA filters, Croom said. The negative pressure rooms helped keep COVID-19 patients in isolation by preventing the virus from escaping the room. With a combination of such efforts, Croom said, the number of COVID-19 cases in Wellstar North Fulton has started to level off and has nearly plateaued. Doctors are now seeing almost the same number of positive patients as they are discharging, he said. In the past couple of weeks, the facility has begun relaxing some of its

Patients, at the discretion of their physician, can safely come in for elective surgeries or procedures, and visitation opportunities have expanded. Wellstar North Fulton, like many organizations, took a large hit from the pandemic, Croom said. “A lot of people that we must have have been incredibly busy,” he said. “Well, we were busy with COVID-19 patients, but a hospital does many, many things beyond just infectious disease.” Croom also said he is very grateful for all of the support Wellstar has been receiving from the community, from encouraging signage to various donations. “I can’t say how meaningful it is to be a part of the Roswell business community,” Croom said. “We are so appreciative.” Wellstar is still preparing for any possible rebound in cases. Dholaria cautioned that infectious disease experts are projecting a second wave of COVID-19 cases, which will

likely peak in the fall when temperatures cool. Dholaria said the hospital is better prepared this time, with better testing methods and PPE supplies. “Is it perfect? I don’t think it is,” he said. “But are we getting there? Absolutely, as every day goes by. We are able to diagnose it quicker. We are able to get treatments quicker. Because of that, I think the severity of what we are seeing right now is a lot less than the severity of what we saw when the first wave came.” The “new normal” brought on by the pandemic has not only impacted people’s physical health. It has also been a source of anxiety, depression and frustration for many people adapting to their new routines. But it doesn’t mean that people should put their lives completely on hold, Dholaria said. He urged anyone struggling with these issues to tell someone or reach out to a provider.

Cities cancel, adapt 4th of July festivities By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com NORTH ATLANTA, Ga. — The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has forced local cities to reevaluate how to host large gatherings, including traditional 4th of July celebrations. While most have canceled annual festivities, some cities are seeking alternative means for celebrating. Milton The City of Milton, for example, traditionally hosts a walking parade in conjunction with the Crabapple Community Association. The two groups have decided to cancel the event after reviewing guidelines released by state and national health authorities. However, the groups are considering other ways to involve the community during the 4th of July. Some current ideas include posting photos of patriotic outfits on the city’s social media pages; sharing images of decorated bikes, wagons and houses; and posting July 4th-themed trivia questions. Everyone, including non-Milton residents, is invited to participate in these

activities. More details will be available on the city’s Facebook page, facebook. com/thecityofmiltonga. Cumming Independence Day celebrations will go on as planned in the City of Cumming but with some changes to accommodate for social distancing. Some activities, such as live music and a dance contest, have been canceled. The 63rd annual Thomas-Mashburn Steam Engine Parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 4. As in years past, the parade route will end at the Cumming Fairgrounds, 235 Castleberry Road. This year, the route will be extended to allow for more social distancing. It will begin at the Forsyth County Tax Commissioner’s Office, 1092 Tribble Gap Road, and will move south on Tribble Gap/Castleberry Road through downtown Cumming toward the Fairgrounds. Fireworks will be held that evening starting approximately at 9:30 p.m. For more information, visit cummingfair.net. Alpharetta The City of Alpharetta’s annual July

4th celebration at Wills Park has been canceled. The event, which has run for more than the past 20 years, was canceled in April when city officials were forced to decide whether to commit the funds during the early stages of the pandemic, according to Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard. The shows had proven popular, with a concert from the Alpharetta City Band, food trucks and vendors providing entertainment and refreshments throughout the day ahead of the giant fireworks display at dusk. Avalon, which often hosts its own special events around holidays, has announced no special events planned for the Fourth, although many stores will be open. Dunwoody Dunwoody traditionally celebrates Independence Day with a 4th of July parade featuring marching bands, floats, clowns, animal units and local celebrities. Last year the parade attracted more than 2,500 participants and 32,000 spectators. In early May, the Dunwoody Home-

owners Association, the parade organizers, announced the parade would be postponed. There is currently no information about a rescheduled parade. Johns Creek Johns Creek historically has held its Independence Day celebration on July 3 with fireworks, a concert and children’s activities at Newtown Park. The event has been canceled for this year. Roswell The City of Roswell has created a new festivity this year: Stars and Stripes around Roswell. As a part of the event, the city will place flags and banners throughout its parks, historic homes, Canton Street and Holcomb Bridge Road. All residents and businesses are invited to participate in the effort. Traditionally, organizers host a Barbecue and Bluegrass event with live music on the historic grounds of Barrington Hall. The city also usually hosts its Fireworks Extravaganza at Roswell High School in the evening. That event has been postponed to an undetermined date.

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area increases park access By JULIA GROCHOWSKI julia@appenmediagroup.com SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Nature lovers now have more options for hiking, kayaking and volunteering. On June 20, the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area started Phase II of its reopening strategy. The biggest change is that visitors can now make use of all commercial services on the river. This include services offered by Nantahala Outdoor Center, Deep South Fly Anglers, Shoot the Hooch, River Through Atlanta, Kayak Classes of Georgia and Tie One On. The national parkland borders the Chattahoochee River in areas of Sandy Springs, Roswell, Johns Creek and runs north into Forsyth County. Previously, in May, some park trails and river access were reopened with waived entry fees. Park entrance fees have resumed, and signage on how to electronically pay the $5 entrance fee are available at each parking area. Additional changes from Phase II include new volunteer opportunities and the opportunity to issue special use permits. Some facilities remain closed for public health and safety, including comfort stations and the Hewlett Lodge Visitor Center in the Island Ford unit. “We welcome visitors back to the park for increased recreation opportunities in Chattahoochee River NRA,” said Acting Superintendent Ann Honious. “We ask visitors to remember to recreate responsibly by recreating with the people in your household. Give others plenty of room whether you are on a trail, at a boat launch, or in a parking lot. Follow the CDC social distanc-

Fireworks cause about 20,000 fires (leading to over $100 million in damage) and 9,000 injuries annually in the U.S. Be mindful of the following: • Louder fireworks are only allowed on a few specific days, including July 3 and 4; other days, Milton’s City Code restricts noises above 55 decibels. • They’re not allowed on a public road, a City park, or within 100 yards of a gas station/ fuel tank, electric substation, historic site, nursing home or another health care facility. • You can’t set off fireworks if you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs. • Any fireworks should be U.S. government-approved, not homemade. Milton police can and will enforce these laws; residents can call 911 to report a violation. (The department cannot control, however, fireworks set off outside City limits.)

Horses, especially, have a natural “flight” reaction and can hurt themselves as well as people and property nearby. If you’re neighbors of someone with equine or other livestock, sensitive pets or a military veteran, please reconsider using fireworks. At the least, limit the timespan to use them and notify these neighbors in advance. That way, they can take important steps to keep their animals safe.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — The Fulton County Public Library System is reopening some services for the first time since its closure in mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting July 1, the library system began offering curbside pick-up and drop-off services for library materials, including books, DVDs and CDs. When the libraries closed, patrons were instructed to hold on to any checked-out materials and they would not accrue any additional fines. Holds were also extended. The library buildings are still closed to the public, but any items placed on hold are now available for pick up Mondays-Fridays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at most locations. Participating library branches include Alpharetta, East Roswell, Milton, Ocee, Sandy Spring and Roswell. “Our patrons have been so gracious during this challenging time, quickly adapting to the digital services only model of library services during COVID-19,” said Library Director Gayle Holloman. “Our staff has jumped in and created virtual programming, expanded our ‘Ask a Librarian’ hours, implemented virtual book clubs, and taught countless patrons how to use digital library services, but now, we are ready to get back to our branches and get books in hands.” Anyone seeking to pick up materials must bring their library or photo ID with them and park in the designated spot for curbside pickup. Signs are available in the lots with a phone number for patrons to call to alert library staff of their arrival. Patrons may now also return materials by placing them in the designated bins located at the front of participating libraries. All returned items will be placed in quarantine and not available for check out for a minimum of 24 hours.

Businesses take grand-opening plunge amid economic downturn By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Opening a local business amid a pandemic and economic crunch is not ideal, but several Forsyth County business owners are taking the initiative to begin their new ventures and put people to work. At Halycon, the 135-acre mixed-use development in south Forsyth County, six new businesses have either opened or will begin operations in the coming weeks. The Collection shopping outlet in Cumming has also recently welcomed a new retailer. On June 20, Clarissa Gibson opened her new shop, The Gibson Co. at Halcyon. Gibson Co. is a home-décor and gift store featuring unique and one-ofa-kind creations made in-house and by local artists. Gibson had no prior business ownership experience before opening her first venture, “The Redo Gal,” a furniture restoration firm run out of her garage with her husband and mother-in-law working along by her side. The family opened their first shop in 2016 in a cottage in north Forsyth County, expanded to included décor and are now operating location No. 2 at Halcyon. Gibson said she had her eye trained on Halcyon for some time and decided to move forward with the location despite the current economic uncertainty. “While no one can predict the future, the most encouraging part of this year is that it seems like there is a new excitement in the air,” she said. “I think we have all recognized the value of spending more time with each other, laughing and dreaming. of course, there still will be. Our hope is that we can use our energy and passion to do some good in our community.” At least one business opening its doors has seen an increase in sales amid the pandemic. Owner Starla Pellegrino will open the doors of Unexpected Pooch Boutique & Bistro in Halcyon on August 8. The concept blends pet nutrition and pet fashion with a French bistro environment. Pellegrino’s first location, in the Alpharetta Crossing Shopping Center, has experienced a growth in sales in recent

months despite the business switching its platform to curbside pickup, online shipping and delivery. Pellegrino said a positive attitude is “always in style,” and believes the foot traffic friendly environment of Halcyon will allow her second location to thrive, even amid a pandemic. Women’s fashion boutique Versona, which offers apparel, jewelry and accessories, opened June 11 at The Collection. The company had planned to open 156 stores this year, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, that figure has been reduced to 60. Rob Dornan, regional vice president for Versona, said the company chose The Collection for the dense population of the area and that they could fill a niche the mall needed. It is an exciting time for Versona, Dornan said, because its competitors are shutting their doors while the company continues to add new locations. The pandemic, as well as the prevalence of online shopping, has cut into the pockets of all brick-and-mortar store owners, Dornan said, but people still enjoy shopping in person. Along with the Gibson Co., two other businesses opened in late June at Halcyon. Pilates and dance studio “Joey” opened June 29 and Salata, which offers customizable salads and wraps, began operations on June 25, becoming the company’s 10th location in Georgia. Two new additions have also opened in Halcyon’s Market Hall. CT Al Pastor is a quick-service concept from CT Cantina Taqueria, also in the complex. Holmes Slice features pizza from wood-burning ovens opened by Taylor Neary, owner of Restaurant Holmes in Alpharetta.

State high school sports board approves basketball shot clock By JOE PARKER joe@appenmediagroup.com GEORGIA — A colossal change to Georgia high school basketball will be implemented this season. At its June 23 meeting, the Georgia High School Association’s Executive Committee approved a 30-second shot clock which will be in place over the next three seasons. The move was heralded by the state’s basketball community, which has long shown support for a shot clock, but it could present growing pains. For years, many coaches have been clamoring for a shot clock, but there have also been concerns over finding personnel to run the clock and operate it effectively, as well as game delays when the equipment malfunctioned. But those concerns have not been enough to deter the push. Under the measure, the shot clock will be phased in. Beginning in 2020-21, the clock will only be used in select holiday tournaments and showcase games. The next season, each region will decide on using a shot clock. Beginning in the 2022-23 season, the shot clock will be used in all varsity games, including the state playoffs. One head coach in Gwinnett County reported the GHSA polled coaches last fall regarding shot clocks. The survey of over 250 coaches showed that 77 percent were in favor of the device in high school games, and only 30 percent believed running the clock was out of the feasible scope of athletic departments. Chattahoochee boys basketball is one of the few Georgia teams to compete in a GHSA-sanctioned tournament that featured a shot clock. The GHSA permitted a 30-second shot clock in a sanctioned event for the first time at the Hawks-Naismith Tipoff Classic in November 2019.

For the Cougars, who won the 201920 Class 6A state championship, it was no big deal. Head coach Chris Short said the Cougars’ fast-tempo play led to little concern putting a shot up within 30 seconds of possession. Short said the issue will be in the logistics. Schools must not only find someone to run the clock, they will need to provide compensation, which can be strained by purchasing the clocks themselves. Goal-mounted clocks come with a higher cost over floor-mounted units but are easily visible for players. Managing the connection between the clock and its operator is also a consideration. At the Hawks-Naismith tournament, Short said the clocks were wireless, but there were connection issues. Short is in favor of the GHSA using a shot clock and would like to see a goalmounted, wired shot clock installed at his school. The GHSA’s approval comes a few months after a vote to implement a national shot clock was squashed. The National Federation of State High School Association — which oversees all state high school athletic governing bodies — voted down a proposal that would implement a nationwide, 35-second shot clock. An NFHS official said the organization will “continue to explore the shot clock issue.” Georgia will be the 10th state to use a shot clock for high school games.

The troubling ‘hell’ of our isolation So many are writing so much about this pandemic. You can’t escape it. So, I find myself doing what? Yep, writing about the darn pandemic. I think it is this remote working idea that has really gotten under RAY APPEN my skin and bothers Publisher Emeritus me. I don’t see much ray@appenmediagroup.com being written about it other than the fact that it is “how things are being done.” I don’t see a lot of concern about the impact of this remote work-style paradigm might have on us. Folks don’t seem too concerned about it. And maybe it is all good — blue sky and kudos to a more efficient way to conduct business. Maybe I am in that bird-group — the “canary in the mine” club. Maybe I am that guy who insisted on horses while Henry Ford was beginning to mass produce cars. I don’t know. What I do know is that this remote communication between people just doesn’t satisfy. It doesn’t feel very fulfilling to me. Yes, the remoteness of the connections serves a need through the pandemic; it protects us from exposure to the virus. However, that Is exactly what we get — a remote connection, which is better than

no connection, I guess. But is it? A case in point: all those isolated — some dying, some surviving, but all separated from their family and friends, folks who were caught in assisted care facilities when the pandemic broke out. Ask them how comforting it was to see a familiar face — on a screen or on the other side of a window — compared to being with them in person. I suspect that the degree of comfort they received from those screens was tragically and implicatively inadequate. The screen did not fill the room with love or confidence or texture of any kind. It did not bring joy or comfort. It did not fill that nagging hole in the confined-one’s heart. It was, at best, an impotent proxy to the warmblooded human connection, no more than a passing shadow. It pains me thinking of friends who entered and remained in hospitals alone because family and friends were not allowed. It breaks my heart to think of all the families and friends of those who have died who were never able to say good-bye or to celebrate their passing in any way other than their own personal and private grief instead of at a funeral. It is hard to say good-bye when you cannot say good-bye. That pain and the loss just never moves off center. It just hovers and lingers, sort of like a virus.

This pandemic is introducing us to new ways to conduct ourselves, for sure. But I am not at all sure that there is a net benefit. We already have enough trouble in our world because of our remoteness — because we are too isolated from the rest of humanity to have empathy or be impacted enough to try to fix our broken world full of broken people whose primary need is a connection to others. If one has no idea what the life of another is like, it is impossible to care very much for them one way or another. When more people are like that, our collective humanity sinks and withdraws, and ultimately what is left is at best, a shell. That is not the direction we want to go. It is the opposite of how and where we want to go. Direct personal connection is where we find safety, security, and completeness. It is the basis for our tribe. It is also our only true path to any degree of happiness. It fills the holes in our humanity, and It is an ingredient for which there is no substitute. Dostoevsky, perhaps, best described our need for humanity when he wrote: “What is hell? I maintain that it is the suffering of being unable to love.” And maybe I would take his thought just one step further and simply say that “hell is the suffering of being isolated from personal contact — face to face — and interaction with your fellow man.”

Roswell officials join local faith leaders June 20 in a pledge to stand against racism.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell is taking action to address racial inequity in its government, according to Mayor Lori Henry. Henry joined the Rev. Sabin Strickland, pastor of Pleasant Hill Church, June 20 to host a Solidarity Rally in front of City Hall. Dozens of residents attended the peaceful protest against racism and police brutality. The gathering is the latest in some 14 peaceful protests the city has seen since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis on May 26, Police Chief James Conroy said. During her speech, Henry said it is now paramount that Roswell acknowledges its past with slavery and the historical role of government in maintaining racial inequity. She added that local cities must begin intentionally dismantling any vestiges of racism present in their systems. “As a local government, we are uniquely situated to examine policies and press for legislative change,” Henry said. “We have all the people, the resources and ideas we need to be a city of inclusion and equality. I don’t want any

Roswell will take several steps to create change. The most immediate action was passage of a resolution to condemn racism at the June 22 City Council meeting. Roswell will also form a mayor’s task force to continue the conversation about racial injustices and to identify areas in need of change. Henry said the task force will be made up of local AfricanAmerican leaders, key community stakeholders and city leaders. Henry and other speakers also encouraged everyone to vote and participate in the census. Strickland, who has spoken at similar gatherings in the past, emphasized the need for solidary as a powerful force of community to enact change. “Solidarity requires effort to secure and to obtain,” he said. “Solidarity doesn’t just happen. It is marked by intentionality… When it is real, when it is right, when it is true, solidarity exposes the absurdity of inequity, inequality, injustice… “We can’t go it alone. Johns Creek resident works to develop lifesaving ventilators By CARSON COOK carson@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Medical ventilators, machines that help patients suffering from respiratory illness breathe, are a crucial tool for saving those with severe cases of COVID-19. The lifesaving machines can cost hospitals between $25,000 and $50,000 a piece, but a team is working to develop a new machine that could help coronavirus patients for a tenth of the price. Varun Yarabarla, who grew up and lives in Johns Creek, works for VentLife, a nonprofit created to research, develop and fundraise for a ventilator that could cost $3,000 to $5,000. “Not just in the United State but on a global scale, there is still a shortage [of ventilators],” Yarabala said. “According to the data that is out there, there will be a shortage for years to come, whether there’s another wave or not.” The VentLife team is made up of about a dozen engineers, doctors and other experts from across the country. Yarbarla is a Georgia Tech graduate, former Fullbright Research Scholar and third year medical student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Georgia. Today’s ventilators were designed to cover 99 percent of respiratory ailments, making them complicated to engineer and manufacture, Yarbala said, but VentLife’s model was specifically designed to help patients with the kind of lung inflammation caused by COVID-19.

Ventlife is developing a medical ventilator designed to sell for a fraction of the cost of those in hospitals today. “We’re trying to make it so our model can still treat, rather than 99 percent, somewhere around 70 or 80 percent of respiratory problems,” Yarbala said. “That is still good enough for basically everybody with COVID and basically everybody with other common respiratory diseases.” While most ventilators involve complicated components that are difficult to source, the VentLife team has built

a working model entirely from easily sourced materials that can be mass produced quickly. VentLife is also working to include thoughtful features, such as remote monitoring, so healthcare workers don’t need to waste protective equipment just to check on a ventilator. Another feature is the device’s ability to capture exhalation, in order to not aerosolize the virus. So far, the VentLife team has devel-

Alpharetta announces pop-up skatepark to draw crowds from downtown By PATRICK FOX pat@appenmedia.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Inspired by a youthful outcry, Alpharetta will open a pop-up skateboard facility at Union Hill Park this week. The impromptu facility comes less than a month after the City Council voted to prohibit skateboarding in the core downtown and within public parking facilities. That action came after downtown residents complained of the constant din from the wheels racing over pavers at City Center. Residents, including some council members, said the skateboarders presented a hazard to pedestrian and street traffic. All agreed skateboarders have no place in parking decks, where the inclines have drawn a regular crowd of coasters. In the wake of the city’s action, a group of skateboard advocates launched a petition this month to encourage officials to explore a permanent facility for their constituency. So far, the petition, available at change.org/Alpharetta, has

more than 875 signatures. DJ Snyder, an Alpharetta High School graduate now living in North Carolina, said he launched the campaign to spread the word among all his friends in Alpharetta. Snyder, 27, said he remains close to the local skateboard community and wanted to pursue a solution. “This is something for the community and for the upcoming youngsters, the younger people who don’t have places to skate,” he said. Back when he was in high school, Snyder said, kids would use the surfaces at Wills Park for skateboarding. “They had the baseball fields, the football fields, a horse park, even a Frisbee Golf course, but there was nothing for skateboarders,” he said. “We would skateboard down the rails and on the ledges, down the stairsteps. Then, we’d get kicked out.” Bray Hayden, 27, a lifelong Alpharetta resident, said he remembers mounting a drive 10 years ago for a skateboard park. He launched a petition that eventually carried some 2,000 signatures,

but the city backed out after showing some initial interest. “The City Council guys were like, ‘we don’t want to bring a punk image to Alpharetta,”’ Hayden recalled. “I think the negative image of the skateboarder has gone down a lot, and we’ve got some younger people in the city, so this is an opportunity.” Hayden said he takes his children skating regularly, but the opportunities are limited. The nearest skateboard park is at Fowler Park in Cumming. “There’s no safe place to skateboard in Alpharetta that’s not illegal,” he said. “That predisposes them to interactions with the police.” Snyder said he recognizes that skateboard parks are expensive, and the city can’t shell out hundreds of thousands of dollars in the middle of a recession. Still, he said, the skateboard community is ready to pitch in. So far, no one with the city has begun researching a full-fledged skate park, said Assistant City Administrator James Drinkard. “We don’t even have a design,” he

said. “But we are committed to continuing to discuss it with the skateboarders.” Publicskateparkguide.com, an online resource for advocates and park planners, puts the average price to design and build a skatepark at $45 a square foot. Its industry survey places the cost of a 3,000-square-foot park, capable of accommodating a few skaters at a time, at about $145,000. A 16,000-square-foot skatepark, capable of supporting a large neighborhood and patrons from the region, would cost about $720,000. Drinkard said it would be important to include skateboarders on the design process, because it makes no sense to build a park that had no users. Snyder said he knows people within his network who are capable of contributing design plans. He said he also knows people willing to contribute with fund drives. “We’re all about creating a solution,” Snyder said. “In Alpharetta — it’s a very nice community — I think we can manage a park that’s reasonable for both sides that keeps [skateboarders] excited and off the streets.”
