The Council Chambers at Milton City Hall has been upgraded to an electronic voting display for council meetings.

Milton City Council upgrades voting system

CITY OF MILTON/PROVIDED

A look at Milton’s new electronic voting system, which was set to debut at the Jan. 6 City Council meeting. A city spokesperson said the new voting system comes at no additional cost to the city, while improving efficiency and transparency.

MILTON, Ga. — Instead of raising hands or calling out, the Milton City Council unveiled a new electronic voting system at its Jan. 6 meeting. A city spokesperson said elected officials will enter their decision on each action item with a city-issued iPad. The official vote will be recorded instantly as it is simultaneously displayed on screens within the City Council Chambers and the city’s live video stream. The city spokesperson said the new voting system comes at no additional cost, allowing staff to make the most of its existing contract with Municode, a codification services provider. Milton officials also say the new

system will allow the city clerk to generate meeting minutes, or summaries, more quickly on the city’s webpage. After a trial run using the Dec. 16 meeting agenda, officials reported the system operated smoothly. Citizen-led committees who meet at City Hall are also expected to begin using the new voting system in the coming months, the city spokesperson said. Officials says the switch amounts to an upgrade for transparency and efficiency and a win-win for residents and the city.
