City council approves home business rules By JON WILCOX jon@appenmedia.com

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Establishing her business at home just made sense when Nevenka Marx decided to take her hobby of personalizing items to the next level. Founded about a year ago, Custom Mark Studios creates bespoke gifts like shirts and water bottles for businesses. Marx is one of many Johns Creek residents who have based their businesses out of their homes. For her, the decision is about convenience and avoiding costly rent for a storefront for her small, burgeoning business. At a July 13 meeting, the Johns Creek City Council approved an update to the city’s Home Occupation Code, adding restrictions and regulations for home businesses. The changes intend to maintain a balance between entrepreneurship and the character and quality of neighborhoods. The changes restrict certain types of businesses from operating in homes. Examples include gun sellers, taxidermists, commercial cabinet-makers, junk and salvage recyclers, massage therapists, businesses that use flammable or toxic materials, and animal boarders and groomers.

JOHNS CREEK, Ga. — Despite the giant screen at the front of the pavilion, Argentina superfan Lucy Rayberg was watching the World Cup final on her phone. “There’s a 15-second delay on the big screen,” said Rayberg, of Johns Creek. About 350 residents attended a watch party at Newtown Park July 19 for the final game of the 2026 World Cup. With her daughter by her side, Rayberg sat in the front row, her brow furrowed with focus.
