County Commission OKs $8.2 million bid to design, construct fire training center

Classic cars cruise Cumming Jeff Ladka sits in the driver’s seat of his restored Checker Cab during the Tin Cup Cruise-In Car Show May 7 at City Center in downtown Cumming. Ladka, who purchased the vehicle years ago from a woman in Atlanta, converted it into a taxi about 10 years ago. He said Checker produced between 4,000 and 5,000 vehicles a year, but only 10 percent were built for private use rather than as taxis. See story and photos on Page 17

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Commission voted May 7 to award an $8.2 million contract for a new fire training facility. The design-build contract to The Beck Group was included in the consent agenda and approved without discussion from commissioners. However, at a commission work session April 28, county staff said they estimate the project to run from 18 to 20 months. The center, which will be located off Martin Road, will replace the department’s current 15,800-square-foot facility on Settingdown Road. The new facility will offer numerous training features, including a simulated loading dock, trench rescue prop and multistory training tower. It will also include a 20,000-squarefoot fleet maintenance building, a 10,000-square-foot logistics warehouse and an 11,000-square-foot training support facility. Capital Projects Manager James M. Weldon previously said the new center will teach firefighters to extinguish the kinds of fires Forsyth County often experiences. “We're not training them to put out fires in high-rise buildings like you might find in downtown Atlanta,” he said. “There is a big focus on residential. There are elements that help them prepare for commercial situations.” — Dyana Bagby
