Forsyth County Manager David McKee speaks ahead of a discussion of a homestead sales tax during a June 4 meeting.

Homestead relief sales tax could appear on 2027 ballots By JON WILCOX jon@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County voters could decide on a sales tax that would offset tax bills for owneroccupied homeowners as early as November 2027. At a June 4 meeting, the County Commission unanimously supported a resolution to ask the county’s legislative delegation to take up a measure to add

the ballot question. Lawmakers could consider the legislation during this summer’s special session, which will convene June 17, County Attorney Ken Jarrard said. The Homeownership Opportunity and Market Equalization Act of 2026 provides for a Local Homestead Option Sales Tax, which could be levied throughout the county. The tax would collect funds to offset the county property tax bills of homesteaded properties.

Homeowners who are a legal resident of the county as of Jan. 1 of the tax year may qualify for the county’s homestead status. The county already provides a regular homestead exemption, granting an $8,000 reduction to homes' assessed value against the Maintenance and Operations and the Fire millage rates.
