Deputies arrest suspected check scheme mastermind FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A Forsyth County man defrauded Regions Bank out of $300,000 by cashing dozens of fake check vouchers, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Amer Hani Meqdadi, 41, turned himself in at the Sheriff’s Office on March 12. He was booked on two counts of use of computer to commit theft and 64 counts of third-degree forgery. The charges stem from crimes Megdadi reportedly committed in 2018. According to the Sheriff’s Office, a corporate security investigator at Regions reported his fraudulent activity in April 2018. Bank officials said Megdadi forged 56 electronic checks totaling about $220,000. He cashed the vouchers at two different Regions Bank branches in Forsyth County. Deputies explained the EFS vouchers are like blank checks that require two points of authentication — a money code issued by the account holder and an authorization code assigned to each

transaction. The EFS vouchers are primarily used by truck drivers to cover expenses during long hauls. Investigators said Megdadi began depositing fabricated EFS checks through the banks’ ATMs in January 2018 because the cash machines accepted them as regular checks and weren’t set up to distinguish the points of authentication. He quickly transferred the funds to different bank accounts before the vouchers were flagged as fraudulent, according to deputies. The Sheriff’s Office indicated Regions Bank lost about $300,000 from the scheme.
Woman crashes following domestic dispute FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash along Browns Bridge Road on March 9. The woman reportedly crashed her car shortly after being involved in a domestic violence incident. Deputies detected the scent of alcohol on the Cumming woman and arrested her. She was booked on charges of DUI, failure to maintain lane and reckless driving stemming from the crash. She faces charges of aggravated assault with a weapon, family violence battery and criminal damage to property in connection with the domestic dispute.
Suspect allegedly uses man’s lost debit card FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Deputies on March 10 arrested a Forsyth County woman months after she allegedly made several charges on a lost debit card. Sarah Lynn Gorisek, 43, was charged with fraudulent use of transaction card. The charge stems from an October report from the victim who told deputies

Officers seized the card and let her go. After the victim reported the fraud, deputies reviewed surveillance footage at one of the stores where the purchases were made. Forsyth Commission approves slew of use-permits By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners approved nearly a dozen conditional use-permits at its March 18 meeting that paves the way for businesses to update or open up shop throughout the county. The use-permits approved include; Sawnee Storage — The board approved the request to operate an open storage yard at Sawnee Storage, along with five variances, at 2879 Canton Highway. Muze Salon Suites — The business calls for a 6,500-square-foot massage parlor/salon in an existing building at 2635 Freedom Parkway. Pleasant Grove Road storage facility — A request for a use-permit by Suddeth Family Limited Partnership was approved to build self-service storage facility in buildings totaling 39,200-square feet on 9.6 acres at 3065 Pleasant Grove Road. Pottery sales/yard art business — The commission approved a permit request by Qing Zhang to operate a pottery/yard art business at 1535
Dahlonega Highway. Staff noted that the business would be screened to nearby properties and along the road frontage. The business is moving from its former location on Veterans Memorial Boulevard. Car sales/broker dealer — A permit was granted to requestor Sean Freed to operate a 200-square-foot auto sales dealership on 2.2 acres at 6075 Parkway North Drive, Suite A. The applicant told commissioners he specialized in luxury cars, specifically Porsches. He also assured the board he would abide by the local regulations when Commissioner Todd Levent suggested some small-scale auto dealers break the county’s codes. Roofing contractor expansion — Commissioners approved a permit request for C.L. Burks Construction roofing contractors to expand its building, located at 1640 Redi Road, by 4,000-square feet. Campground Road rezoning — A request by Naal General Trading LLC to rezone from Agricultural District to single-family residential for eight lots on 7.3 acres at 6259 Campground Road was approved by commissioners.
Bethany Property Group rezoning — Bethany Property Group’s rezoning request was approved for 34 acres at 6238 Campground Road. The rezoning from Agricultural District to single-family residential calls for 48 residential lots. Browns Bridge Road QuikTrip — Another QuikTrip location is set to open in Forsyth County after the board approved a use-permit for the company to develop a 2.6-acre tract southwest of Browns Bridge Road near Bridgetowne Drive west of Ga. 400. Atlanta Cabinet Coatings — A request by Atlanta Cabinet Coatings, LLC, to operate a 3,500-square-foot cabinet manufacturing facility, with variances, in an existing building with six parking spaces on 3.4 acres at 4250 Keith Bridge Road, Suites 100 and 101, was approved by the board. Winston’s Removal & Landscaping — The board also approved a use-permit for Winston’s Removal & Landscaping, LLC, to build a 2,600-square-foot building with five parking spaces with an open storage yard on 1.9 acres at 5435 Mashburn Drive. A request for a conditional usepermit by Shelly Daniels to operate a 384-square-foot dog kennel for dog
breeding on 1.25 acres on agricultural property at 2675 Dr. Bramblett Road was postponed. A short-term rental permit request hearing for 3930, LLC, was also postponed. The request is to operate the short-term rental for up to six overnight guests with three parking spaces on 1 acre zoned agricultural at 3939 Aaron Sosebee Road. In other action at the meeting, commissioners read proclamations honoring March 21-27 as Family Unit Week and March as Women’s History Month in Forsyth County. The board also finalized its $19.6 million plan to overhaul the county’s water meter system. The update will include “Advanced Metering Infrastructure” that allows for automatic meter readings. County officials previously told the board the change will benefit the county’s water and sewer customers by providing hourly usage updates, real-time leak notifications and added online features. The county aims to complete the update over the next two years. Commissioners also approved further study on incentivizing developers to build larger residential lots.
County’s public health district surpasses 100K COVID-19 vaccines administered By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — District 2 Public Health, which includes Forsyth County and 12 other counties in northeast Georgia, reached the milestone of 100,000 COVID-19 vaccines administered March 15. The District announced it has administered over 11,000 doses per week for the last eight weeks. “We have a committed group of public health employees who have persevered through COVID-19 testing and vaccination while continuing to deliver services to our communities,” Zach Taylor, District Health Director, said. “With the vaccination effort, we expanded our full-and-part-time workforce, partnered with nursing programs in our area, and deployed our volunteer base to make this possible. Having long-term relationships with our educational institutions, a volunteer organization in place, and partners in other agencies and organizations makes this achievement a shared community effort.” The announcement comes as vaccine supply chains have stabilized and more Georgians are eligible to receive doses. Beginning March 15, the state expanded vaccine eligibility to include
all residents aged 55 and older and those with high-risk health conditions, including asthma, cancer, diabetes, hypertension, neurological disorders, heart conditions, obesity and others. On March 16, judges and courtroom staff were made eligible to receive vaccinations. Healthcare workers, residents and staff of long-term care facilities, residents aged 65 or older and their caregivers, first responders, educators and other were made eligible to receive doses on March 8. A significant percentage of the vaccines District 2 has administered has been in partnership with Forsyth County. In January, the county began hosting mass vaccination events at First Redeemer Church on Peachtree Parkway and Browns Bridge Church off Browns Bridge Road to assist the health district. On March 17, the county centralized its efforts and began hosting the events at Lanier Technical College’s Forsyth campus. The county’s events had administered over 11,000 doses by the first week of March. Appointments are being scooped up quickly when made available for the county’s events. Planning Commission to vote on mixed-use development By JOE PARKER joe@appenmedia.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — The Forsyth County Planning Commission was set March 23 to make its recommendation of approval or denial for a mixed-use development off McFarland Parkway first proposed in 2016. The 19-acre site, located at 100 McFarland Parkway adjacent to Brandywine Elementary School, has been on the county’s radar for about five years with a slew of changes made to the proposed site plan since it was first submitted. Board member Jessica Thorsen, who represents the area as in District 3, said the plan has “come a long way” and could help spruce up the area during the Planning Commission’s March 16 work session. The current proposal calls for a rezoning from Community Business District and low-density residential to a Master Planned District, a mixeduse zoning category. Liu Investment Partners is requesting the rezoning to develop 67 townhomes and several commercial buildings totaling
44,000-square feet. The plan calls for an entrance along McFarland Parkway between an open area and a retail/restaurant building. Four additional retail buildings would be constructed along the southern edge of the property with an entrance from Martin Drive. The townhomes would be located between the retail portions of the site. Two entrances along Ga. 9 are also shown on the site plan, along with several stormwater retention areas and amenities, including a walking trail, picnic area with benches, a gazebo and several open areas. The plan was recently updated to include commercial spaces on the lower level of one of the townhome buildings, a move praised by Thorsen. Another positive change, Thorsen said, is a better proposed transition from the residential and commercial areas. Local charitable group increases impact by opening store Home furnishings store helps to renovate rooms for special-needs kids By ZOE SEILER newsroom@appenmedia.com ROSWELL, Ga. — Roswell-based philanthropic group Sunshine on a Ranney Day is furthering its positive impact to the local special-needs community with the organization’s latest venture, Sunny and Ranney Home Furnishings and Décor in Roswell. The store, opened last November at 109B Oak Street, sells furniture donated by companies and uses the profits to fund home makeovers for families with special-needs kids. Over 140 families have had their homes renovated by Sunshine on a Ranney Day. The organization is latest venture of Holly Ranney and her husband, Peter. The couple, inspired by a church sermon, found their calling to use their networks and resources to help others. Ranney has a background in furniture and design, and Peter has extensive construction experience, which led to the creation of Sunshine on a Ranney Day. The organization started as a hobby in 2012 when the couple had corporate jobs. In 2013, Ranney and Peter did a renovation for the family of Tripp Halstead, who at two-years old was hit by a tree limb when it fell, causing a severe brain injury. “After that, we kind of realized that after working in these homes…that these families needed so much more, and there’s so much need out there,” Ranney said. “So, in 2014, I ended up leaving my corporate job and taking the charity on full time, and then we just focused on growing it.” The next step for growing the charity was opening Sunny and Ranney Home Furnishings and Décor last year. The store gets inventory from various market showrooms and other sources as furniture is switched out and samples need a new home. The store has about 10 showrooms of donated furniture, and all profits go toward the charity and the home makeovers. The store sells a little bit of everything for bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms and dining

The store is the latest venture of the Sunshine on a Ranney Day charitable organization, which Ranney founded with her husband, Peter, in 2012. rooms, except for mattresses. “We focus on making sure that the quality of stuff that we have is very nice,” Ranney said. “It’s stuff from market showrooms to designer warehouses, and we just got a bunch of stuff from a builder, like a model home. It was all new stuff that they just had to get out of it because they were going to sell the model home.” The product changes every week as new inventory arrives. The store does take individual donations if items are in good condition and up to date. Ranney asks that anyone interested in donating furniture should email the store with pictures of the item(s), and the group can decide to accept the donation before it is dropped off. Sunny and Ranney’s store has provided needed funds to continue the organization’s efforts. The timing of the store’s opening was critical because the group’s annual gala, which raised about half a million dollars each year, was cancelled in 2020.
“Our store opened in November last year, and in the first month, I mean, the income that we were able to bring in from the sales of that actually really kind of put our charity back to where we should be,” Ranney said. “And it’s only going to increase.” She added that the store is a great way to raise money because people get to buy a cool, nice piece of furniture and know that their purchase is helping children. The store has also garnered more exposure for the charity and more social media followers. “As soon as you walk in the store you learn about the charity, so everybody, by the time they leave after shopping, has learned about Sunshine on a Ranney Day,” Ranney said. “It’s actually been really good for the charity, because it’s not just a shopping experience and helping raise money, it’s also exposure.” Sunny and Ranney is open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Between 33 and 50% of the time, patients with spider veins have underlying varicose veins or venous insufficiency. If someone has varicose veins, leg discomfort, leg swelling or other signs of deeper vein disease, then medical treatments are often useful to ensure that cosmetic treatments are successful. If underlying vein disease is present, medically significant venous disease can be a driver of cosmetic spider vein development. Treating underlying varicose vein disease can help make cosmetic spider vein treatments more durable and successful. If you are sure that you only have spider veins (little purple or red netted cluster of tiny veins) and have no signs of any underlying vascular issues (tired, achy legs, swelling of the ankles, discoloration of the skin at the feet or ankles, restless leg syndrome, blue bulging veins etc.) then you can treat the spider veins with sclerotherapy or laser treatments – sometimes a combination of both. Sclerotherapy is a method by which a vein expert injects a medical solution into a vein. The solution irritates the interior of the vein, which undergoes closure and becomes invisible as blood no longer can fill or pass through the vein. Lasers, such as the 1064nm Nd:Yag used in our practice are very effective at eliminating the spider veins that are too small to be injected with sclerotherapy. How many treatments are needed and how long do you wait between treatments? With each of the treatments listed above, a reasonable goal is that 75% of the veins treated will resolve with each treatment. Therefore, more than one treatment or type of treatment may be needed. Patients should wait roughly 6 to 8 weeks between treatments. The tiniest spider veins can sometimes resolve in as little as 3-4 weeks but many require 6 weeks for resolution, and larger reticular and varicose veins can take several months to resolve. The larger the vein, the longer the resolution takes. If you find yourself experiencing any of the symptoms of vein disease, then your path to a cure is quite different. The first step is to visit a physician and discuss you vein disease. This is critical, as insurance companies require proof/ documentation of a vein complaint along with several specific questions answered about how your vein issues are affecting your quality of life. This first documentation of a vein complaint is Day 1. In order to get your vein treatments
covered by insurance, most insurance companies mandate that a patient try “conservative therapy” for 90 days before any medical vein procedure will be covered. Conservative therapy consists of over the counter pain medication, leg elevation, exercise and medical grade compression stockings. If it seems likely that vein disease is causing the patient’s symptoms, an ultrasound will be ordered. The ultrasound provides a map of the venous system and a diagram of which vein or veins are diseased and would benefit from treatment. Medical records and ultrasound report are sent to an insurance carrier for review and prior authorization is requested. (Prior authorization is not a guarantee of coverage, and if you know a politician, please ask them to fix that!) Often, a patient’s varicose veins can connect with one another. That means that treating one cluster of varicose veins can sometimes result in multiple adjacent varicose veins also going away. It is often in the patient’s best interest to space out treatments to minimize the number of treatments needed to achieve a cure. So, as you can see, a patient who has never tried “conservative therapy” and who has multiple varicose veins needing treatment may require 5 months or more to complete treatment given 1) a 90 day conservative therapy waiting period, 2) a prior authorization review, and 3) a month or two of spaced treatments. Cosmetic treatments would then typically follow medical treatments if desired. This can all be greatly accelerated if a patient has already completed conservative therapy before their first consultation with their physician or if the patient is not going through insurance for treatment. A final useful tip is that the spring and summer are still a great time for a first meeting with a vein specialist. Given the potentially lengthy timeline outlined above, a spring or summer appointment can help ensure that treatments are completed in the same calendar year. This helps eliminate the danger of having to reach a deductible more than once. If you or a loved one has venous disease or spider veins, know that advanced, minimally invasive, safe and highly effective treatments are available. Seek out a vein specialist who is a member of the American College of Phlebology (ACP) and who has taken and passed the board exam of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM). It’s Barbecue Time! Ahh, spring. It’s officially here. The calendar tells me that the 2021 edition of the season of renewal really is underway, and we can only hope that this one plays out better than the last STEVE HUDSON one did. Get Outside Georgia, How can you do aa4bw@comcast.net your part to make this a better spring? Yes, wear a mask and practice social distancing and all the rest. Those are small things, but they’ll help. Do them – if not for yourself, then for the rest of us. But that’s not what I want to talk about. Instead, I want to spotlight one of my favorite springtime outdoor activities, and that is the fine art of filling your backyard with the aromas of outdoor cooking. I want to talk about what happens when you fire up a smoker and add some hickory and pile on some ribs or a Boston butt. Low, slow heat does the rest, and then later on, it’s heaven-on-a-plate time barbecue-style, and life becomes very, very good. My introduction to the exquisite world of barbecue came a long time ago. When my dad and us kids would set out on a fishing trip, for example, it always seemed that our route to the water would take us near a barbecue place. Dad knew where the best ones were, and somehow we always managed to be passing near to one come time for lunch or supper. That early indoctrination was apparently effective, for barbecue has become a part of my being. I’ve always favored barbecue if given the choice of what to eat. hand at cooking it myself, but I never had much success. And then, one Christmas a few years ago, Wife of Mine gifted me with a large and heavy box. “Does he know what it is?” asked one of my kids as I got ready to open it up. “I don’t think so!” my bride said. So I dug into the paper, and few minutes later there it was – my very own barbecue smoker. Since that fateful day, I’ve been slowly learning the art of low-andslow outdoor cooking. There have been some disasters along the way, including the time I managed to turn two dozen innocent chicken thighs into rock-hard lumps of coal. But I’ve gotten better. Nowadays (knock on wood) the chicken thighs are easy. So are racks of ribs. So is a Boston butt, though I’ve got to get up at 5 a.m. to get one of those started in time if we plan to have it for supper. And the leftovers…ahh, the leftovers! They’re perfect to throw in the cooler and take along to enjoy for
lunch when I go fishing or hiking. Nowadays, having been playing with this barbecue thing for a little while now, I think I’ve decided that what I really want to be when I grow up is a “pit master,” as in master of the barbecue pit. That’s the honorific to which every barbecuer aspires. Is “barbecuer” even a word? Spell-check tells me no. But “pitmaster” is, and that’s the moniker I’m striving for. I want my barbecue to be so good, so exquisitely smoky and richly flavored, that it will be unforgettable. I want it to become the stuff of legend and song. Right now, in fact, there’s a big thing of ribs resting in the refrigerator. I’ve covered them with my secret rib rub, and they’re soaking up the flavor even as we speak. The smoker is all set up and ready to go too, and I’ve loaded it with some nice hickory and one little piece of mesquite for that little extra kick of flavor. Yeah, I think it’s time to put them on. They’ll be done by six, and dinner’s at seven. I’ll save a couple for you.

Sawnee EMC to receive more clean energy CUMMING, Ga. — Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation is among 32 electric cooperatives in Georgia that now collectively share in power production from a new 200-megawatt solar portfolio that includes three utility-scale projects in South Georgia. The total capacity of the three sites will collectively provide enough lowcost, renewable energy to serve more than 35,000 EMC households. As a clean energy source, its environmental offset is equivalent to more than 350,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually. All three sites feature single-axis tracking modules that rotate to follow the sun, a technology advancement that produces approximately 20 percent more energy than fixed-tilt installations, allowing participating cooperatives to maximize the energy output. Green Power EMC, the renewable energy provider owned by 38 Georgia Electric Membership Corporations, including Sawnee EMC, is purchasing the full power output of the three solar facilities and providing it to participating electric cooperatives.

Dagmar Camilla Spellman, 85, of Cleveland, Georgia, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, March 6, 2021. She was born in 1935 in Frankfurt, Germany. She is remembered by her husband of 65 years, David Spellman, her daughter and son-in-law Debbi and Bill Keneely, her son and daughter-in-law, Steve Spellman and Veronica Richards, her daughter and son-in-law, Karen Spellman and Tim Davis, as well as her five grandchildren, David, Amber, Melissa, Kevin, and Leslie, and her six great-grandchildren, Summer, Colton, Jacqueline, Hunter, Zachary, and Jaxson, her
brother and sister-in-law, Gert and Ruth of Munich, Germany as well as all of her many friends. Dagmar was such an inspiration to everyone, never met a stranger, and loved her family fiercely. She loved boating, camping, gardening, and reading but was happiest spending time with family and friends. She was also a tremendous cook and treated everyone to some very tasty German dishes. She will be remembered for her infectious smile, zest for life and her love for all of us. Rest in peace, we miss you.
