Retail developer obtains approval for tree removal

Church Mission Team inspires community to stock free pantry

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — The Alpharetta City Council said a request to remove a massive oak tree at a proposed retail space created a difficult decision. Developer Alpharetta District Places asked council members for a variance to remove a water oak specimen tree on property along Roswell Street between Old Milton Parkway and Marietta Street. The developer is seeking to begin construction near the end of May on a 34,000-square-foot-retail-space project, also named Alpharetta District Places. City Councilwoman Katie Reeves said the geometry of Marietta Street and a need to expand sidewalks there made removing the tree an unfortunate necessity. “I’m struggling to see how that could be done and save this particular tree,” Reeves said. “I am all for having folks bend over backward for trees, but I think the priority of having a safe Marietta Street to navigate both by car and by foot is really important.” Council members voted unanimously in support of removing the tree despite residents who voiced opposition at the meeting.

ROSWELL, Ga. — Members of Northminster Presbyterian Church take pride in the acts of simple service they do together. For five years, the Mission Team has led the charge on keeping the Little Free Pantry at the church on Old Alabama Road filled with non-perishable items, hygiene products and fresh fruit to help address food insecurity in Roswell. Stocking the pantry is a tremendous commitment, team member Barbie Hackler said. A team of 31 families shares the responsibility each month, along with help from good Samaritans in the community who want to support the project. “It’s not three families doing all of it, it’s 31 families doing it.” Cullen Hackler, Barbie’s husband, said. “I think that speaks to being that community of believers and trying to shine God’s light in some of the darker places around us. It’s very fulfilling.” The first Sunday of each month at Northminster Presbyterian Church is designated as Little Free Pantry Sunday. The congregation is encouraged to bring donations of food, diapers and other items to stock the pantry, and community donations are taken inside the church. The church also accepts food donations Mondays through Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at 2400 Old Alabama Road.
