FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — For a long time, many Forsyth County residents have petitioned for a Whole Foods or a Trader Joe’s to open in the community. Those two specialty grocery stores have said they don’t yet have plans to expand into Forsyth, but the opportunity is not missed in other specialty grocery stores. At least three projects are being negotiated that could bring organic-food supermarket Earth Fare, Sprouts Farmers Market and a Geor-
gia Farmers Market to locations throughout Forsyth. Earth Fare is being considered at the Collection at Forsyth in the 400 block of Peachtree Parkway. Sprouts Farmers Market is going to open at the former Kroger supermarket-anchored location at Lakeland Plaza east of Ga. 400 and exit 14, according to a blog that covers retail, ToNeTo Atlanta, which first broke the news last month at www.tonetoatl.com. Although a Whole Foods is not planned in Forsyth anytime soon, they will be opening in neighboring Alpharetta at the new mixed-use Avalon development. When contacted for this story, Earth Fare representatives did not want to confirm their intent to open at the Collection at Forsyth.

CUMMING, Ga. — Deputies chased a speeder who got away, but caught the passenger, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. At about 9:30 a.m. Nov. 28, deputies were on the lookout for a silver Hyundai. Deputies saw the car speeding down Ga. 9 and followed it to Campground Road, where the car turned left. Deputies activated their sirens to pull it over, but it continued to drive and turned onto Rogers Road. The driver ran through stoplights and continued to elude deputies and speed.

Man confronts thief in the night CUMMING, Ga. — A man awoke to the sound of his truck starting and ran outside to stop the theft, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. At about 1 a.m. Nov. 27, a man in the 6000 block of Crystal Cove Trail told deputies he and his wife were asleep when he heard his 2003 Dodge Durango start up in his front yard. He said he ran outside as the thief tried to drive up the driveway, but watched the truck roll back into the yard. The man said he opened the door and yelled at the man to get out of his truck. He said he punched the thief several times in the face as he yelled back, “you got me.” The truck was flung into reverse and struck the side of
In the 1000 block of Mountain Road by the city limits of Milton, deputies saw the car slow down. Then, the passenger door opened, and a passenger jumped out of the car while the driver sped off. The passenger hit the ground, rolled and began to get up. He kept shouting, “I told him to stop.” Deputies searched the passenger, and then asked who was driving and why were they running. The passenger said the driver did not have insurance and might have an outstanding warrant. He said he told
the driver to stop several times, but he would not listen. Milton Police arrived and said they were familiar with the driver, who used to live off Mountain Road. They provided Forsyth deputies with his information, and he had a suspended license for child support obligations and a super speeder violation. The tag on the car he was driving was stolen off a Hummer in Cherokee County. The mother of the driver’s child arrived and said she had just spoken to him on the phone. He called her again while she was at the scene, and
deputies were able to talk to him. Deputies said he admitted to driving the car and said he ran because he didn’t have insurance. Later, deputies released the passenger without any charges. Deputies took out eight warrants for the driver – one count of felony fleeing and attempting to elude, seven counts of misdemeanor traffic offenses, three counts of misdemeanor acquiring license plate to conceal identity and three counts of misdemeanor theft of receiving stolen property.
the trailer the man was renting, which damaged the front bedroom portion. The man said the thief jumped out of the truck and ran away behind the trailer. The man said the suspect was about 20 to 25 years old, about 6 feet tall and had bad acne. Deputies searched the truck and found the suspect’s green backpack, which had several cellphones, chargers, watches and a DVD player inside.
been forced open. Someone had taken the cash drawer along with $400 in cash. The manager said the business closed at 5 p.m. Nov. 27 and stayed closed until that morning. The manager said because of where the suspect entered the building, the motion detectors should have activated the alarm. The store has no security cameras, but the neighboring store may be able to provide their footage.
Deputies handcuffed the man and transported him to Forsyth County Detention Center for questioning. There, the man told deputies his grandmother gave him half of her house when she passed away. He said the house was split between him and his brother. His brother bought out his portion of the house for about $60,000. The money was placed in an escrow account for him at the Citizens Bank. He said the bank issued him five checks for $10,000 and the rest was given to him in cash. Deputies contacted the Citizens Bank and gave them the check information to re-verify. They said the checks were valid and legal. The man was released, given his belongings and taken back to the Wells Fargo Bank. The manager told deputies she contacted two banks, and both the Bank of DK and the Forsyth Citizens Bank said the checks were not theirs. She told deputies she used phone numbers that only banks use to communicate with each other.
Thanksgiving Day business break-in CUMMING, Ga. — When a store manager went to open his business up after the Thanksgiving holiday, he found it had been broken into, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. On Nov. 29, the store manager of R.E. Michel Company, 1015 Union Center Drive, told deputies he arrived for work at about 7:30 a.m. He said he found the glass window next to the front door shattered. He cleared the business and saw the cash register had
Suspected forger found innocent CUMMING, Ga. — A man was handcuffed and taken to jail for questioning after he tried to cash a supposedly invalid $10,000 cashier’s check, according to a Forsyth County Sheriff’s incident report. The management at Wells Fargo Bank, 5495 Bethelview Road, told deputies a man tried to pass a fake $10,000 cashier’s check Nov. 26. FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County’s growth and expansion this year has brought about $45 million in new capital investment a chamber of commerce leader charged with economic development told planning commissioners. Randall Toussaint, vice president of economic development at the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce, addressed the Forsyth County Planning Commission during their work session on Tuesday, Nov. 19. “We are now at a point where we are seeing companies looking to grow in their markets,” Toussaint said. Toussaint said this year there has been $44.8 million and about 18 new capital investment projects in the county due to the chamber’s actively pursuing leads and

Some of the challenges the chamber has heard from businesses is improving Ga. 400. Transportation is the No. 1 complaint from companies thinking about relocation. “What we do is business retention, Toussaint said, “making sure the local economy is fruitful in order to help grow a company.”
Grocery: Plans for fresh food stores up in air Continued from Page 1 A spokesperson for Sprouts also did not want to say where they planned to open, but did confirm they had plans to come to Georgia. “As you know, leases tend to have contingencies, so we’re not making any formal announcements, granting media interviews or making any comment at this time,” the spokesperson said. As far as the Georgia Farmers Market, which still plans to open at 131 Merchants Square adjacent to the Stars and Strike and Goodwill in Cumming, the property is having setbacks with the permitting process, the owner told the Forsyth Herald. Georgia Farmers Market does plan to open by next year. Earth Fare, which is an Asheville, N.C.-based company, is a natural foods grocery store that according to sources plans a number of new locations in the state. Forsyth is scheduled to be among their first, with a possible opening during the second half of next year. If built, the store will be placed along Ronald Reagan Boulevard in an undeveloped portion of the Collection. Earth Fare has existing Georgia locations in Athens and Augusta. Phoenix, Ariz.-based Sprouts is likely to open at the former Kroger location in Lakeland Plaza. Elleni Tzortzis,
Sprouts, a grocery chain based out of Phoenix, Ariz., is likely to open at the former Kroger location on Lakeland Plaza. whose family runs Giorgio’s Restaurant at Lakeland Plaza, had even launched a petition to bring a Whole Foods to the shopping center, but those calls were unsuccessful. Bringing Sprouts, one of the fastest-growing retailers in the U.S., to the shopping center will be welcome news to shoppers looking for an alternative to traditional supermarkets.
Anthony Miller, who recently opened the Cupbearer Coffee and Tea Outfitter, 543 Lakeland Plaza, said this would be a perfect fit for health-conscious consumers. Miller said with Stein Mart recently shutting its doors, it will be nice to see an increase in foot traffic to Lakeland Plaza. Miller said a Sprouts deal
has not been announced to shop owners, but he’s heard from other owners this was in the works. “Customers who shop at Sprouts are very specific in what they want; they are educated grocers,” Miller said. “This will give people a reason to drive across Ga. 400. For us, it’s the same type of customer, who values high quality.”

The Best Breakfast in Atlanta is in Alpharetta. ON WINDWARD PARKWAY
E
ating breakfast can be just a meal or it can be an event. It can be an event because the food is so fresh, so made from scratch, so healthy and savory that, well, it’s no longer just eating. It becomes an indulgence — a reward you give yourself.
You take your time and enjoy the conversation. You relish the meal. It’s like the difference between drinking Starbucks® coffee instead of convenience store coffee. Or as the famous commercial we all know says, using Grey Poupon® instead of mustard. Or drinking fresh squeezed orange juice instead of concentrate. The Original Pancake House turns your breakfast into an event that helps you get through the week – something that you can look forward to and enjoy instead of just having a meal. Enjoy our various breakfast courses, ranging from sausage and eggs to french crepes. All made from scratch. All fresh. All indulgently delicious.
The Apple Pancake: Our Apple Pancakes are a great
example of the quality and preparation that goes into all our breakfast courses:
We peel and slice fresh, tart and tangy Granny Smith apples. The apples are placed in an eight inch skillet and lightly sautéed in clarified butter. Next, the egg based German batter is added from a batch that was made fresh that morning. The skillet is then placed in a 200 degree oven for approximately 45 minutes. At this temperature the German batter will solidify, but will not bake. Then the skillet is removed from the oven and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, the pancake is flipped over and baked in a 450 degree oven. At this point the German batter will rise in the skillet as it bakes and the cinnamon sugar mixture on the bottom begins to caramelize. After approximately 15 minutes of bake time The Apple Pancake is flipped back over onto a plate, and served. The Apple Pancake is very large when it comes out of the oven, but after it is served, it will shrink on your plate right before your eyes as it cools. Even though it takes over an hour to prepare one of these pancakes, we are always baking one, so it should not be much more than 10 to 15 minutes before you can enjoy your fresh Apple Pancake after it is ordered.

honored for volunteering MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — A 2010 graduate of South Forsyth High School has logged about 750 hours in the last two years volunteering throughout the Georgia College and State University campus and his community. Barrett Roell, 21, a longtime Keep Forsyth County Beautiful volunteer, was recognized in October with the National Daily Point of Light Award. Roell was recognized for the award, which honors individuals and groups creating meaningful change in communities, because as president of the blood drives at Georgia College, he overhauled and expanded the program. Roell, a senior management marketing major, made the blood drive process efficient, increased the amount of blood collected and spread campus awareness. In addition to blood drives, he volunteers with several community organizations. “I just enjoy giving back,” Roell told the Milledgeville-based Union Recorder newspaper. “It makes me feel awesome to know that I’m making a difference in the lives of other people.” –Aldo Nahed

CUMMING, Ga. — Behind every great Girl Scout stands a great adult volunteer who sponsored her. There are thousands of girls eager to join the program, but the number of adult volunteers to facilitate it is low. That is why Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta has asked those men and women who wish to have a positive impact on the lives of girls to volunteer. The membership specialist, Sabrina Nirenberg, said volunteering is not only an opportunity to help girls gain self-confidence and critical thinking skills, but empower them to think they can make a difference in their community. “We are in need of volunteers who are willing to be committed and go through the training that we provide at no cost to play a sponsor role in our girls’ lives,” Nirenberg said. “We have to have two non-related adults per troop who can also pass a criminal background check.” Nirenberg said the wide

Girl Scouts provides the leadership training, which is a program based on charities and course guides. After training, the volunteers form a troop and start meeting at a time convenient to their busy schedules. Nirenberg said they can
meet as often as once a week to twice a month. “The times they meet are up to them,” Nirenberg said. “We try to allow the volunteers that flexibility.” Even if a leadership role seems too demanding at first, Nirenberg said they have designed the role “troop helper” to allow volunteers to experience the troop life without the full responsibilities.
“It’s almost like an internship,” Nirenberg said. “We have opportunities for someone who may not want to take on the leadership role in the beginning to mentor and work with other troops to see if that’d be something they are interested in.” Nirenberg said adult volunteers also receive awards like their troop girls. Roban Everett of Alpharetta received the Pioneer Award for more than seven years of invaluable service in North Fulton. “From the beginning, we have opportunities for adults to be recognized and thanked,” Nirenberg said. “We also have a great networking capacity because we hold monthly meetings for our adult volunteers.” For more information, visit www.gsgatl.org.

North Forsyth High School students received tablets from Rewarding Minds.

Forsyth Central High School students were awarded computers as part of the Rewarding Minds program.
Smart students rewarded with technology Rewarding Minds prepares students for digital future By ALDO NAHED aldo@forsythherald.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Fifteen students at Forsyth Central High School and another 16 students at North Forsyth High School met last month for a group interview with members of the board of directors for local nonprofit Rewarding Minds. With an average grade point average of 3.6, these students are academically high achievers, even though they lack one important tool — personal access to technology.
But that all changed after the interview. Each of the 31 students received a new Microsoft Surface tablet, along with a case. The tablets were installed with Microsoft Office and came with a new printer, accidental protection and virus protection software. Jack Schiff, who launched Rewarding Minds in 2011, said the organization is doing better than he had planned. “We expected to do 50 students in three years, and we’ve more than doubled our goal,” Schiff said. “It’s far exceeding
the school’s openness to work with us.” There’s a need to equip students with technology they can’t afford on their own, Schiff said. There are an estimated 370 students who are juniors and seniors who qualify for the Rewarding Minds program, which plans to gift 45 computers locally this school year. “We need to raise more money to help more students,” Schiff said. ‘Real estate done differently’ with new brand Berkshire Hathaway is new face of Prudential Realty By ALDO NAHED aldo@northfulton.com ATLANTA — Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is the new name and real estate franchise brand of Prudential Georgia Realty, one of Atlanta’s largest and most respected residential real estate brokerage firms. This week marks the conversion from Prudential Georgia Realty to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Georgia Properties. Dan Forsman, president and chief executive officer, will continue in his current role running the day-to-day operations along with the executive leadership team and managing brokers. “You’re going to see real estate done differently next year,” Forsman said. “We want to simplify the transaction. We’re going to do it, and I’m privileged to lead it.” Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is the second-largest, full-service independent residential real estate brokerage firm and one of the largest brokerage-owned settlement services provider in the U.S. Last year, HomeServices became the majority owner in HSF Affiliates LLC, which operates the Prudential Real Estate franchise network. Soon after, the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices brand was launched. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, has 1,100 associates and 22 offices across the greater metro area of Atlanta. This acquisition represents an expansion of HomeServices’ footprint in the Atlanta market along with Harry Norman Realtors, which HomeServices acquired in 2006. With this transaction, HomeServices has 28 brands and more than 17,000

Berkshire Hathaway, the worldwide holding company based in Omaha, Neb., and led by Chairman and CEO Warren Buffett, is ranked by Barron’s as one of the world’s 100 most respected companies. Berkshire Hathaway owns more than 55 companies and employs more than 300,000 people. “This transaction makes us an even stronger organization,” said Forsman. “We will be unmatched in our ability to serve the real estate needs of new and existing clients throughout Atlanta.” An important new element added to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, Georgia Properties is its luxury collection division, focusing on the highestend estates, landmark homes, magnificent residences and properties, in particular throughout Buckhead and the Northside area.
Forsman said the legacy of the company is secured by the performance of the past and the future “is very bright.” “They are the most admired company in the world,” Forsman said. “The resources that Berkshire Hathaway brings to the table, coupled with their brand name and the consumer awareness will launch us to heights we’ve never seen.” Forsman said the focus is to double the market share of the company in Atlanta through increased per person productivity and higher level of customer service. “We are going to do that,” he said. Ron Peltier, chairman and CEO of HomeServices, said Forsman’s leadership and commitment to his agents, employees and customers has guided Prudential Georgia Realty to its position as one of the largest companies within
the Prudential network. Throughout this week, several events are being held to commemorate the new company, formerly Prudential Georgia Realty. On Dec. 9, about 1,000 agents gathered at the High Museum in Atlanta for a celebration. The following day, ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held at branches throughout the state. Lisa Swayne, of the Butler Swayne team, was part of the big launch. Swayne is thrilled with the new association. “To be associated with Prudential was a great connection in Atlanta and to merge with Berkshire Hathaway is fantastic,” Swayne said. “We work with a lot of executives in Atlanta and the connection is a privilege to be associated with success. It makes us feel good.”

The 11.7-acre site is at 1105 Buford Road along the Ga. 400 corridor. Mike Sobh, son of Lou Sobh and vice president of the company, said this is more of a soft opening and will have

Sobh said the 47,000-square-foot showroom and service facility is the largest they have built so far. “There are about 18,000 Honda owners in the area, so we feel like this will be a good turnout,” Sobh said.

Housing demand remains strong Making health care decisions Most people don’t think about putting their home on the market in December, or even January for that matter. But prospective home sellers may want to reconsider, with inventory low and demand remaining strong in our area. For the beginning of December, the inventory of single-family homes is down 9 percent in North Fulton and flat in Forsyth County from this time last year. Seasonally, this is typical as there are fewer buyers looking over the winter period so fewer homeowners list or leave their home on the market. But when we look at demand (pending sales and past sales), home sellers may want to reconsider putting their home on the market now or immediately after the first of the year. In December 2012, there were 214 homes sold in North Fulton and at the beginning of this month, there were already 414 properties under contract. Similarly, last December there were 223 homes sold in Forsyth County with 497 under contract at the begin-

ning of this month. We won’t know what the final sales numbers will be for December 2013, but it is safe to say they will far outpace the previous year. Between current demand and the prospect of more competition from a surge in new construction next spring, January looks like a seller’s sweet spot for hitting the market. Now that the Affordable Health Care Act is a law, have you evaluated your health care options for your small business? Have you taken the time to identify if you need to make a change? The recent problems with the health care exchange have small business owners with 50 or more employees scrambling to make decisions on the best options to provide health care benefits for their employees. On the day before Thanksgiving, it was announced that small businesses would not be able to buy health insurance via HealthCare.gov. The delay in functionality for the Internet-based SHOP (Small Business Health Options Program) system represents the latest setback in the efforts to implement the three-year-old Affordable Care Act. So what can you do? Small business owners that want to take advantage of the available tax credits will now have to sign up with either an insurance agent or broker, or directly with a health insurance company. Because this takes a lot of time to evaluate, it is forcing many small

business owners to renew their current plan early. Small businesses with 50 or more employees have until Dec. 23 to choose a health plan that will be in effect on Jan. 1 to comply with the law. This doesn’t represent a lot of time if you were counting on the exchange to be up and running as advertised. Small business owners need to understand the law, evaluate their options, select the best course of action for now and take action before the deadlines. Hopefully in a year, the online systems will be working as intended, and this process will be easier to understand and utilize.

What’s your hearing fingerprint? By Dr. DEBORAH WOODWARD Johns Creek Audiology & Hearing Center No two fingerprints are alike. No two snowflakes are alike. Everyone’s DNA is unique and personal. And believe it or not, the same goes for your hearing. The way you hear is shaped by many things, starting with the unique physiology of your ear. But it does not end there. Hearing is also shaped by life experiences, lifestyle, and your individual physical and mental makeup. A musician listening for harmonies and rhythms; a football player listening for signals over the roar of a stadium; or a parent identifying their child’s voice in the school play – all have different hearing preferences, even if their hearing, as measured by a medical audiogram, “looks” identical.
This uniqueness becomes especially important to people coping with a hearing loss. While they all need amplification, they need to apply it in different ways based on the unique way they live and hear. Why basic hearing instruments fall short The reason that mail order hearing “devices” are so unsatisfying is that the “one-soundfits-all” design actually fits NO ONE! Some may offer a few adjustments that can change the amplification but they can only go so far. Speech may sound “tinny” or mechanical at times with these devices and you will have trouble distinguishing speech from background noise or locating the source of sound in a room. Think of eyeglasses with the wrong prescription. The frames may fit your face well but your vision is blurry.
The right hearing instrument is as unique as you are Think of it as a micro-brain that works in harmony with your own brain to differentiate sounds based on your unique hearing profile. An advanced wireless signal processing system supports features that guard speech, help you focus your hearing, orient you in a room, and more. “Unique” begins with you Advanced new technology is still only part of the story. Through a new, more individualized hearing evaluation process, a Doctor of Audiology can actually program your unique hearing ability with lifestyle and speech preferences down to an incredible level of detail. This information tells the instrument how to react automatically to the different
hearing situations you encounter in the course of a day. Whether it’s a conversation in a car, lunch with friends, a business meeting, sporting event, concert, TV show, or just quiet time at home. And, settings can always be adjusted at the same high level of detail by your hearing care professional as your needs change. Unlock the power of personal Your hearing profile is part
of what makes your life as personal as your fingerprint. With the correct hearing instrument, you can now experience a level of hearing performance that is tuned to YOUR life at a richer level of detail – anytime and anywhere. --Dr. Deborah Woodward has been a hearing care specialist for 24 years and is in private practice at the Johns Creek Audiology & Hearing Center. 770-814-1260
ADHD – not just in children anymore Adult ADHD is associated with multiple comorbidities such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and other personality disorders. Adult ADHD is a valid psychiatric disorder of adulthood distinct from these other conditions. Adult attention deficit disorder differs from the childhood variant because the hyperactivity in adults may be replaced by other symptoms such as anxiety, impulsivity and inattentiveness. In fact, prior to 2002 there were no diagnostic guidelines, but there have been great advances since. Some of the symptoms that characterize Adult ADHD are:
ADHD is a relatively common psychiatric disorder among adults. The prevalence is thought to be 3.5%-5.3%, which accounts for more than 11 million cases in the United States alone. With increased public awareness, adult ADHD became a topic of great interest so clinicians should be able to diagnose, treat, and manage patients with this disorder. Etiology is still uncertain. Genetics however is believed to play a prominent role, followed in importance by acquired injuries to the brain. ADHD was widely thought to be strictly a disorder of childhood. Now there are numerous scientific papers and clinical trials that acknowledge the existence of an adult version of this disorder, which can be traced back to the younger years. Before this time ADHD in adults was known as Minimal Brain Damage or Dysfunction (MBD).
1. Often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in school-work, work or other activities. 2. Often has difficulty sustaining attention in tasks or play activities. 3. Often does not seem to listen when spoke to directly. 4. Often does not follow through on instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand directions) 5. Often has difficulty organizing tasks and activities. 6. Often avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort (such as schoolwork or homework)Often loses things necessary for tasks and activities (eg. School assignments, pencils, keys) 7. Is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli. PAID ADVERTORIAL
8. Is often forgetful in daily activities.
Some children with ADHD continue to have it as adults. And many adults who have the disorder don’t know it. They may feel that it is impossible to get organized, keep a job, or remember and keep appointments. Daily tasks such as getting up in the morning, preparing to leave the house for work, arriving at work on time, and being productive on the job can be especially challenging for adults with ADHD. These adults may have a history of failure at school, problems at work, failed relationships and traffic accidents. Like teens, adults with ADHD may seem restless and may try to complete several tasks as once, most of them unsuccessfully. They also tend to prefer “quick fixes,” rather than taking the steps needed to achieve greater rewards. Treatment is very rewarding. The first medications to be approved by the FDA belonged to a non-stimulant group of medications: Atomoxetine. The FDA later approved stimulants such as methylphenidate and mixed amphetamine salts. Group delivered cognitive behavioral therapy is recommended in some cases as a supportive treatment. If you or someone you know may have Adult ADHD, call Johns Creek Family Medicine at 770-771-6591 and schedule an appointment with Dr. Zack Charkawi.

What is a cataract and what is cataract surgery? Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and today cataracts affect more than 22 million Americans age 40 and older. At some point in our life, we will all develop a cataract. The natural lens of the eye yellows and becomes cloudy with age as a result of biological changes of the proteins inside the lens. The function of the human lens is to focus incoming light onto the back of the eye. As your lens ages, light from the outside worlds becomes more and more distorted as it enters your eye. Difficulty reading, needing more light to read, experiencing glare and haloes at night and, even poor sleep patterns can be explained by cataract formation. The treatment for cataracts involves a painless, 10 minute surgery to remove the “clouded lens” or “cataract” and replace it with a man made intraocular lens implant. It is the most common surgical procedure in the US and around the world and is considered to be an extremely successful and safe procedure with a success rate approaching 99.5%. What is laser cataract surgery? With traditional cata-
ract surgery, all the steps of the surgery are customarily performed “manually” by the surgeon using handheld tools. Laser cataract surgerythe next evolution of cataract surgery with the Ziemer Z6 laser offers a greater amount of precision, predictability and safety to these steps leading improved visual outcomes and more precise targets. With the Ziemer Z6 Laser System, your surgeon can offer you unmatched accuracy and a more predictable and customized cataract procedure. Based on your medical history and pre-operative evaluation, you and your surgeon will discuss the options available for your desired visual result. Together you can discuss a treatment plan which may include using the LDV Z6 to create the precise laser incisions in the cornea along with an advanced lens implant that may allow for improved near, intermediate or distance vision. This tailored treatment may reduce your need for glasses or contact lenses after surgery. How is laser cataract surgery different from traditional cataract surgery? In traditional cataract surgery, incisions in the cornea
are made using handheld instruments including blades to access the cataract. Your surgeon will then use a surgical device to manually create a circular opening in the lens capsule of the eye that holds the cataract. The Ziemer Z6 laser can be used to make the corneal incisions precise and the opening in the lens capsule as circular as possible, in the right location, and sized to fit the replacement lens. Your surgeon can also use the laser to break up and soften the hard cataract. Softening the lens with the laser enables your surgeon to then remove the cataract more gently and with significantly less ultrasound energy than is used in traditional manual cataract surgery. What are the benefits of laser cataract surgery? • A highly customized treatment • A treatment with little or no discomfort • A more precise and predictable treatment • A gentler and easier cataract removal • Generally, a more rapid visual recovery due to reduced inflammation • The opportunity to receive
tailored treatment with advanced technology multifocal lenses, which may reduce the need for glasses or contacts after surgery Am I a suitable candidate for laser cataract surgery? Your surgeon and you will decide whether you are a suitable candidate based on your eye anatomy, type of cataract and type of lens implant that you desire. Most patients are candidates for having some of the steps of cataract surgery performed with the Ziemer Z6 laser. How long has the procedure been performed? Thousands of cataract procedures have been successfully performed using femtosecond laser systems, and femtosecond lasers have been used in eye procedures for decades. The most familiar use of femtosecond laser technology is LASIK. Femtosecond lasers represent an advanced standard in precision laser cataract surgery and the Ziemer Z6 platform was FDA cleared in 2013. What should I expect on the day of surgery? Your day in surgery should
be no different than a routine cataract case. The Ziemer Z6 laser is positioned next to the surgeon and is utilized seamlessly during the cataract surgery process. You will be given mild IV sedation that will likely keep you pleasantly unaware of the goings on in surgery. There is no pain, needles or stitches as part of the procedure. What should I expect after surgery? After surgery, you can generally expect your vision to be improved within 24 hours. Generally, patients experience no pain after surgery. Slight scratchiness of the eye is common and they prescribed eye drops will help with any of these symptoms. Many patients return to work or normal activities the next day and even drive themselves to their post-op day one appointment! How long does the procedure take? You can expect to be at our center for2 hours. And you will be in the procedure room for 20-25 minutes. Call Milan Eye Center at 678-381-2020 for more information.

Alternatives to Hysterectomy Picture this scenario. You are having issues with heavy bleeding at menstruation. You go to your gynecologist and are told you need a hysterectomy. This will require a major surgery, a prolonged recovery time and inability to get back to work and your daily life for quite a while. Is this the only solution? The answer is probably no. We now have many more alternatives to hysterectomy than ever before. In the category of medical alternatives to hysterectomy there is the possibility of oral contraceptives and hormonal Depo-Provera infections. These medications are traditionally used for contraception but are safe for women to use until menopause if no medical health issues exist. They can decrease monthly bleeding substantially and even be manipulated so that there are fewer menstrual cycles. Oral contraceptives
can also decrease acne and perimenopausal side effects as well. Another new alternative to hysterectomy is the Mirena IUD. This devise recently received FDA approval for use in managing heavy menses. It can easily be placed in an office visit without anesthesia. After the first few months most patients will have either no menses or very light menses. The device can be left in for 5 years and is very safe in all age groups. If you prefer not to use a medication or are reluctant to use an IUD another alternative would be an endometrial ablation. This is a procedure that in some cases can be done in an office setting or as an outpatient at the hospital. The lining of the uterine cavity is treated so there is either no menses or very light menses each month. The nice feature with this procedure
is that recovery time is very quick. Most people are back to work within a 24-hour time period and the results last for years. So the next time your doctor days you need a hysterectomy, be sure to discuss these options. While the need for hysterectomy still exists in some cases there are more alternatives than ever before. –Laura Tsakiris MD Chattahoochee Gynecology
Say “No” to fad diets By LISA GRAHAM, RN, BSN, CDE Northside Hospital Diabetes and Nutrition Education Program Remember the fable of the tortoise and the hare? The moral is that slow and steady wins the race. Turns out, that age-old wisdom applies to weight loss too. Fad diets often fail because dieters are prone to regain the weight when they inevitably return to their old eating habits. Success, as nutritionists will tell us time and time again, is a result of lifestyle changes and smart food choices. There is no “miracle” weight-loss plan when it comes to long-term, sustainable weight loss. Recognizing Fads If you’re aiming to shed some pounds, and don’t know where to start, there are plenty of credible resources out there, but it’s important to know how to decipher fact from fiction. When it comes to recognizing “fad” diets, there are several red flags. 1. Avoid any diet that eliminates entire food groups. Incorporating a variety of foods is necessary for good health, and any diet that teaches you otherwise isn’t teaching you the fundamentals of good eating habits. On the other hand, vegetarian and vegan diet plans can be very healthy, but consult with a nutritionist before diving in to ensure that all your nutrient requirements will be
met. 2. Pass on any diet trend that claims you can “trick” your body’s metabolism into burning more calories. There are only two ways you can “trick” your body into burning more calories: a healthy diet and routine exercise. 3. Ignore any diet that promises dramatic weight-loss that’s fast and easy. Healthy weight loss requires patience and hard work. Any diet telling you otherwise is just blowing hot air. Keep the Weight Off for Good If you’re serious about weight loss, ignore the hype. Follow the tips below to get back into shape for life. 1. Go slowly. When you’re making small, meaningful changes, the weight will come off slowly, but it’ll likely stay off because you’re building good habits rather than crash dieting. Healthy, sustainable weight loss for most people is about 1-2 pounds per week. Losing more than a couple of pounds per week is typically neither healthy nor sustainable, and the weight lost is typically water weight, not body weight 2. Don’t starve yourself. Eat just 300 to 500 calories under what you burn each day. If you start cutting too many calories, your metabolism slows down to protect fat stores in expectation of a long period of food deprivation. 3. Eat only when you’re
hungry, stop when you’re full. Many people lose weight just by paying attention to this one tip. 4. Get your Zzz’s. Studies show that sleep deprivation increases levels of a hunger hormone, which may lead to overeating. 5. Get moving. No fad diet on earth can replace the weight-loss wonders that routine exercise has to offer. You’ll not only burn calories during the activity but you’ll also build muscle, which will help you burn even more calories over time. For more healthy living tips and information on resources to help you lose weight, please go to www.Northside.com/nutrition or visit northside.com/ newstartchallenge.

Tail waggin’ good times »
Therapy dog helps school children to read Roswell woman visits schools with rescued pup By JADE RODGERS jade@northfulton.com ROSWELL, Ga. – Outside of a classroom setting, most people would not consider reading to be a group activity, but on Nov. 6, Roswell resident Gail Goldberg proved that notion wrong. Goldberg, a retired kindergarten teacher, is now a volunteer for Therapy Dogs International. TDI hosts a program called Tail Waggin’ Tutors that promotes literacy in children by allowing kids to read books to therapy dogs. Paired with her Great Pyrenees partner, Biscuit, Goldberg helps children throughout Georgia to improve their reading abilities. Learning to read is a challenge for many children, and the stress of reading aloud in a classroom can be counterproductive to a child’s self-esteem. “For a child to have the opportunity to sit beside a warm, fuzzy, calm dog and show the dog their book and read it to them, has been shown to give that child an activity to look
forward to and relish,” Goldberg said. “As the child reads or shares their book with a dog such as Biscuit, the teacher can observe where the weaknesses are and target them in her lessons. It’s just a win-win all the way around, and the dogs really enjoy visiting with the children.” It takes a special kind of animal to be a therapy dog, and Biscuit’s story is an inspiring one. Biscuit was abandoned in the back of an apartment building in Tennessee at the tender age of 4 months. She was tied to a tree and left with little food and water. A neighbor heard her cries and called animal rescue services. From there, Biscuit went on to live in different foster homes throughout Georgia before residing with Goldberg and her husband; the couple instantly noticed Biscuit’s loving and magnetic personality. Goldberg had a professional U.S. Customs canine trainer work with Biscuit for seven months before submitting her for the therapy dog test at Therapy Dogs International. Biscuit passed with flying colors and joined Goldberg in her mission to help children with their confidence in reading.
Roswell resident Gail Goldberg and her Great Pyrenees partner, Biscuit, reads to children, helping them learn how to read themselves. Goldberg and Biscuit accomplished quite a goal when they visited Sheltering Arms Early Education and Family Center in Marietta Nov. 6. Handler and dog went to each classroom full of children, acquainting the students with the colossal canine that weighs in at 140 pounds. Despite her intimidating size, the Great Pyrenees is an
incredibly gentle giant. Biscuit inspired smiles amongst the children as they approached to pet her. This visit in particular was distinct for Biscuit because it marked her 150th therapy visit within two years. In honor of this accomplishment, the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy donated 150 books to Sheltering Arms in Biscuit’s
name. Goldberg and Biscuit distributed the books, some of which included Goldberg’s own book, “Animals A-Z: Poems for Early Readers.” Together, Goldberg and Biscuit make a wonderful team and will continue their mission of improving child literacy. New GED test to be introduced in January ATLANTA — The state of Georgia will launch a new General Educational Development (GED) program in January 2014. The change that has been developed by the national GED Testing Service in Washington, D.C., will align the entire program with college and career readiness standards and provide the level of academic rigor required by the increased demands of the job market.
The test, which once had five content areas, will combine language arts writing and reading, and will now have four content areas: reasoning through language arts, mathematical reasoning, science and social studies. The cost to take the full, four-part test will remain at $160, but the price for an individual test in 2014 will increase from $32 to $40. All partially completed tests
and scores will expire at the end of the year, meaning those students who do not act now will have to completely start over again in 2014 with the new GED test in order to receive their high school equivalency credential. ‘Shrek’ opens at South Forsyth High School By CAITLYN WALTERS walters@northfulton.com CUMMING, Ga. — This is the last week to catch the South Forsyth High School drama club’s presentation of the award-winning “Shrek, the Musical.” “Shrek, the Musical” is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film, and the cast and crew of South Forsyth bring everyone’s favorite ogre to life on the stage. “‘Shrek, the Musical’ is the culmination of months of hard work from my amazing cast and crew, with more passion crammed into this show than we have ever had before,” said the director, Kirk Grizzle. “There is no weak character and you won’t want to miss this fairytale come to life. Come see what makes us special.” In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre – not a handsome prince – shows up to rescue a feisty princess. This musical includes the hilarious sidekick Donkey, who cannot stop talking, a shorttempered villain and a cookie with an attitude. There are more than a dozen other fairytale misfits that when thrown together call for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand, and his name is Shrek. The show takes the stage on Dec. 12, 13 and 14 at South Forsyth High School, 585 Peachtree Parkway. Tickets are $10 at the door, or in advance from any cast member. For more information, contact Grizzle at kgrizzle@forsyth. k12.ga.us.

Continued from Page 1 visit or Super Bowl tickets, for choosing good-for-you foods and getting active for at least 60 minutes everyday. Physical education coach Cate Hernandez said she entered the school into the contest and wrote three essays that described how the students’ efforts proved them worthy of the awards. “You’ve worked so hard the past couple years by eating healthy, doing those 60 minutes every day and making those healthy choices,” Hernandez told students gathered at the assembly. Jackson and Freddie Falcon signed autographs for the school in the principal’s office before entering the gym filled with screaming fans. Jackson told students about his healthy lifestyle choices and encouraged students to continue with theirs. “If you can’t play football, go outside and run around, ride a bike, do jumping jacks or jump rope,” Jackson said. “And, for those of you who can fly, I encourage you to fly.” The director of government and community of affairs for Comcast, Deanna Jones, also joined Jackson in congratulating the students for their achievements, because Comcast donated $10,000 of the total awarded. Hernandez said the school

Five selected students were able to ask Jackson questions. Fifth-grader Suba Senthil asked if there were going to be any healthy concessions at the new Falcons stadium. “I do think there will be healthy food choices and stands at the new stadium,” Jackson said. “But, first things first, you have to help me teach your classmates on what those right decisions are.” After the assembly, 50 students stayed in the gym to participate in the NFL Play 60 Ultimate P.E. class. Shiloh Point is one of 34 schools in the country cho-
sen as an NFL Play 60 Super School. Hernandez said these students were fifth-graders who completed a total of 25 miles in the school’s 100-mile running club, or were second- through fifth-graders who were health leaders in their classrooms. The Play 60 staff set up five stations – quarterback, running back, defensive back, a fitness station and an optical course. Each station lasted for one song before the group would rotate to the next station, while Jackson rotated periodically to ensure interaction with each student. “This is a great program,” Jackson said. “I am happy to be here and be a part of this.”
A server at Ichiban, 410 Peachtree Parkway, told deputies he waited on a man and two women who did not pay their bill Nov. 24. He said they ordered several items totaling about $150. The two women left while the man waited for the bill. When the server gave the man his bill, he said the man asked for to-go sauce and then he walked to the bathroom. The manager said he saw the man walk out of the bathroom, pass the table and head
toward the front door. The manager asked the man if he paid the bill, and the man said he left the money on the table. When the server went to the table, he found a Target gift card placed on top of the bill. Deputies said the balance left on the gift card was $0.24.

A woman told deputies she parked her 2006 Toyota Highlander outside BodyPlex, 5356 McGinnis Ferry Road, and worked out for about an hour Nov. 26. When she returned to her car at 7:45 p.m., she found her passenger window shattered and her diaper bag that held her purse and wallet missing.
She said her husband’s $400 HP laptop, which was on the floor behind the driver’s seat, was also taken. While deputies spoke with the woman, her husband called and said their bank account balance was negative $287. Later, the woman told deputies she found five charges on her company credit card. The thief charged $290 at a Kohl’s, $100 at a Walgreens, $290 at a Publix and a total of $434 at two TJ Maxx stores.

Reader Advisory: The National Trade Association we belong to has purchased the following classifieds. Determining the value of their service or product is advised by this publication. In order to avoid misunderstandings, some advertisers do not offer employment but rather supply the readers with manuals, directories and other materials designed to help their clients establish mail order selling and other businesses at home. Under NO circumstance should you send any money in advance or give the client your checking, license identification or credit card numbers. Also beware of ads that claim to guarantee loans regardless of credit and note that if a credit repair company does business only over the phone it’s illegal to request any money before delivering its service. All funds are based in U.S. dollars. 800 numbers may or may not reach Canada.
