Apollo Art Auctions presents an outstanding assemblage of over 500 lots of ancient art and antiquities, featuring one of the strongest and diverse sales to date. The auction holds impressive provenances comprising of pieces coming from the Prince Collection, distinguished by its royal associations, the Leo Mildenberg Collection, a prominent German numismatist and antiquities collector, Arther M. Sackeler (1913 - 1987), a major collector known for his collection of ancient art from the Near East and South Asia, Jean Marais (1913 - 1998), a well known French actor and artist, John Kluge (1914 - 2010), art collector and philanthropist who held a significant collection of Classical antiquities, and Emile Brugsch (1842 - 1930), a German Egyptologist known for having found the tomb of Djer, which the Egyptians believed was the tomb of Osiris. 500. EGYPTIAN FALCON MUMMY WITH PAINTED SARCOPHAGUS

Late Period, Ca. 664 - 332 BC An Egyptian wooden coffin with a mummified falcon, Late Period, carved in compact mummiform with a falcon head. Coated in a glossy black surface, with fine yellow linear detailing on the striped headdress and along the body. The face is defined by prominent circular eyes and a projecting beak, giving the lid a markedly iconic character. The reverse preserves areas of exposed wood beneath the coating, revealing the underlying carpentry and grain. A long vertical seam and slight side openings indicate a two-part construction intended to accommodate the wrapped bird. Raised on an integral rectangular plinth, the piece belongs to the wider tradition of votive animal cult equipment in first-millennium BC Egypt. 501. EGYPTIAN POLYCHROME WOOD SARCOPHAGUS MASK

Late Period, Ca. 664 - 332 BC A polychrome wood sarcophagus mask with a pale face framed by a tripartite wig, the face with broad brows, large almond-shaped eyes with black cosmetic lines and pupils, a straight nose and a small smiling mouth. The wig is surmounted at the crown by a winged scarab supporting a solar disc, the outspread wings extending across the crown onto the lappets with finely detailed feathers. A broad multicoloured usekh-collar with concentric bands of geometric ornament spreads across the chest, the whole item is gessoed and richly painted in red, blue, green, yellow and black. 504. EGYPTIAN LIMESTONE SLAB FRAGMENT WITH RELIEF OF NOBLEMAN

Ca. Old Kingdom, 6th Dynasty, 2345-2181 BC An Egyptian limestone low relief slab carved in low relief, presenting a nobleman shown in strict profile facing right. The figure wears a stri-ated wig and a short rectangular chin beard, with finely incised de-tails of the eyes and mouth. Both arms extend forward to hold a long staff or baton, set against a vertically scored field at the right margin. Above, two horizontal registers of hieroglyphs include bird and eye signs, framing the scene as a captioned portrait. The upper zone is left rough with losses, contrasting with the smoother dressed surface of the figured and inscribed areas. Scattered dark speckling and minor abrasions across the face indicate age and burial history rather than later reworking. Provenance: Private UK collection; acquired in Germany; formerly with G. Late Period, Ca. 664 - 332 BC A composite wooden statuette of Ptah-Sokar-Osiris in three parts, showing the mummiform god standing above a rectangular platform and fixed at the rear. He wears an atef crown with ram’s horns, a solar disc and tall ostrich feathers. The decoration is polychrome and glazed. A multi-strand necklace and a beaded pectoral are painted across the chest. Below is a naos-shaped amulet with figures of the deceased, Anubis and a goddess, flanked by uraei. A winged kheper appears beneath, framed by udjat eyes and birds, and a panel of three vertical hieroglyphic columns completes the scheme with a prayer to Osiris for the deceased. A travertine and argillite vessel in the form of a lotus flower, with a tapering body rising to a flat shoulder and a short cylindrical neck with a narrow mouth. The exterior is composed of alternating pale travertine and dark green argillite slabs set around the circumference to imitate overlapping lotus petals. 512. EGYPTIAN GRANITE HEAD AND TORSO OF QUEEN

New Kingdom, Ca. 1478 - 1458 BC An Egyptian granite bust of a queen, Early Eighteenth Dynasty, New Kingdom, carved from red granite and originally conceived as part of a life-size seated figure. The sculpture preserves the upper body and head, crowned with the vulture headdress, an attribute reserved for royal women and emblematic of divine guardianship. The bird’s form is articulated with finely incised plumage over the tripartite wig, with the short feather pattern carefully rendered across the crown and continuing into elongated tail feathers that descend along the back. The talons grasp shen signs, symbols of eternal protection and cyclical renewal. Subtle vertical incisions beneath the headdress suggest strands of hair emerging from the wig. The queen is depicted in a close-fitting sheath dress, its upper edge terminating just below the breasts and secured by broad straps. A beaded collar, composed of multiple rows, appears between the lappets of the wig, contributing to a restrained yet harmonious ensemble of royal insignia. The arms are held close to the body, consistent with a formal seated posture and reinforcing the sculpture’s hieratic composure. The controlled modelling of the torso, the clarity of the incised details, and the use of red granite place this work among the most prestigious royal commissions of the early New Kingdom. The god wears the White Crown of Upper Egypt and a straight beard projecting from the chin, the narrow face with prominent nose, large almond-shaped eyes and projecting ears. Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, Ca. 664 - 30 BC A large painted wooden anthropoid coffin lid, carved with a rounded head and shoulders and a flat body panel. The face is modelled with arched brows, inlaid eyes and a small mouth, framed by a tripartite wig painted with alternating dark and light bands falling in long lappets to the chest. The torso is painted with three vertical columns of hieroglyphs within polychrome borders. The reverse is hollowed with a deep recessed cavity, with joinery cuts and fixing holes along the perimeter. 517. HUGE EGYPTIAN WOODEN MODEL BOAT WITH ROWERS AND OARS - 1.5 meters

Middle Kingdom, Ca. 2055 - 1790 BC A large wooden model boat with oars, the long narrow hull is carved from a single piece with a pointed bow and a slightly raised stern, the interior is hollowed. Fourteen crew figures are arranged in seated pairs along the deck, each with a red-painted body, black wig and white kilt, the arms bent forward to grip long oars with flat blades projecting over the sides. The features are well defined, with a short wig held in place with a long band. The face is perfectly proportioned with plump lips surmounted by a short and straight nose. He has almond-shaped eyes, large shoulders and a short false beard. The figure’s neck is adorned with the usekh collar. 523. EGYPTIAN FRAGMENT OF SANDSTONE FUNERARY STELA

Ca. XXV Dynasty 747-664 BC An Egyptian fragment of a funerary stela. This is likely the second register of the stela: the offerings for the deceased and part of his son’s face performing funerary offering are still visible. The deceased son’s name is recorded in the hieroglyphic inscription above the scene: “ his beloved son Pathe Heb”. Below this inscription, an attendant is depicted with a head-cone, which is a type of conical ornament used in ancient Egypt. This ornament is often seen in paintings and bas-reliefs but was only confirmed through archaeological evidence in 2009. To the right, a broad register displays votive food offerings, suggesting that the context of this relief served a religious or ceremonial role. An incredible half-suit of infantry armour, the whole surface of each piece having been lavishly etched and gilt. The central boss on the breastplate depicts an image of the infant Christ in the arms of the Virgin Mary under which is the signature POMP. This signature communicates that this armour was made by the famed Pompeo Della Cesa, one of the leading armourers of the late sixteenth century, arguably the foremost amongst his Italian compatriots, and the master of a large operation based in Milan. His patrons included Philip II of Spain, who also ruled as Duke of Milan; Alessandro Farnese, Duke of Parma; and Emanuele Filiberto, Duke of Savoy. Della Cesa’s exceptional work is today showcased in prestigious collections and museums around the globe, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Wallace Collection, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Further imagery on the breast and back plate includes mythological creatures, musical instruments, war trophies, arabesques, and human figures. The helmet, gorget, pauldrons, rerebraces, counters, vambraces, and tassets have also been etched and gilt. They are decorated with various motifs, including human figures, animals, plants, and religious imagery. To etch and gilt an armour to this magnitude would have been a vastly expensive undertaking, meaning that whoever commissioned this armour must have been a high-ranking member of the social elite. The style of this armour suggests that it was primarily used on foot; indicators include the open-faced helmet, the tassets being a single piece of metal rather than lames, and the lack of ability to attach an arrêt or lance rest. Ca. AD 116 - 125 A finely carved, somewhat over life-size white marble portrait bust of a mature man is in excellent condition. Its total height is 70 cm, and the height of the head (from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head) is 26 cm. Only the end of the nose is broken off and the top of the left ear and rim of the right ear slightly chipped. A thin crack extends across the bottom front of the bust and up from there to the bottom of the indentation for the left arm. In that area there is also a slightly beige to yellowish discoloration. The surface has been somewhat polished to a semi-glossy finish. The individual represented, is most likely a private person, with a look and hairstyle like that of the last official portrait type of the emperor Trajan, who ruled the Roman Empire from 98 to 117 AD. A Roman marble fragment preserving a right foot and lower leg, plausibly from an imperial statue of the second century AD probably Hadrian. The limb is rendered with naturalistic toes and a thick sole, suggesting a careful observation of weight and stance. The footwear is an ornate, open-toed boot, secured by a lattice of straps that crosses the instep and climbs the shin. A projecting feline mask on the front functions as a martial and apotropaic emblem within Roman elite visual language. The sides are enlivened with low-relief scrollwork and rosettes, providing a decorative register without obscuring the anatomy. The lid is decorated along each face with a raised palm branch meeting at the apex, the four sloping sides set with alternating roundels enclosing a cross or a Chi-Rho monogram flanked by small alpha and omega letters, each acroterion carved with a small cross. The face is calm and idealised, with downcast eyes and stylised hair arranged in wavy locks gathered into a topknot, with attendant figures standing on lotus pedestals to either side, and smaller devotional figures carved in relief below. Ca. 330 BC A red-figure amphora with a tall ovoid body on a high moulded foot, rising to a cylindrical neck with a broad outturned rim, the pair of vertical strap handles joining the neck to the shoulder. The neck is bordered with an ovolo frieze, one side with a left-facing portrait and the other with a large palmette, both above a wave pattern at the base of the neck, the shoulder decorated with radiating tongues and a further wave pattern encircling the lower body. On side A, two nude warriors confront one another between tall tendrils, one advancing with a spear raised, the other with a shield held before him. At the centre of the bowl is also a later re-engraved emblem of Sassanian origin, strongly suggesting that the vessel entered Sassanian circulation—either through trade or as captured booty—and was marked accordingly.
