Apollo Art Auctions is delighted to present “Fine Ancient Art & Antiquities – The Prince Collection” an exclusive sale beginning on Sunday, 21st June at 1:00 p.m. BST.

We are delighted to present Fine Ancient Art & Antiquities – The Prince Collection. Commencing on 21st June at 1:00 PM (BST), the sale will be held at the Apollo Art Auctions London showroom, 63–64 Margaret Street, W1W 8SW. Bidding is available in-room and online via the Apollo Art Auctions platform, as well as Invaluable, The Saleroom, LiveAuctioneers and Interencheres.

Spanning from the prehistoric and pre-dynastic periods (c. 7000 BC) through the Bronze Age, Neo-Assyrian and wider Near Eastern civilisations, and onward into the Egyptian, Greek, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine eras, the collection encompasses over eight millennia of ancient art, extending into the Renaissance period (c. AD 1600). Among the most important provenances is the Kofler-Truniger Collection of Lucerne, assembled by Ernst Kofler-Truniger (1899–1989) and Marthe Kofler-Truniger (1918–1999), renowned for their collection of Egyptian antiquities, ancient glass, medieval ivories, enamels and early works of art. The auction also includes works from The Prince Collection, a private collection formed through direct royal ownership.

A selection of Egyptian antiquities in the sale also comes from the collection of Prof. Dr. Martin Eduard Winkler (1893–1982), the German historian and Russian scholar whose icon collection later formed the foundation of the Ikonen-Museum Recklinghausen. The sale further features pieces associated with the Cairo antiquities dealer Nicholas George Tano (1866–1924), whose family gallery supplied private collectors and museums, including the Louvre, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Additional pieces originate from the collection of German ethnologist Erika Krautkrämer (1932–2022), the Antwerp collection of Dr. Felix Lauwers (1924–2002), and the Munich collection of the German historical author and researcher Siegfried Obermeier (1936–2011). Together, these provenances add important historical context to the sale and reflect generations of private collecting, scholarship, and the long international history of the antiquities market. Highlights of the sale include lot 771, an Egyptian red quartzite block statue of a priest, possibly Yuya, priest of Min and father of Queen Tiye; lot 777, a large Egyptian polychrome sarcophagus lid; lot 880, a Graeco-Roman marble statue of a crouching Aphrodite / Venus; lot 766, a rare Egyptian granodiorite temple stele fragment depicting Nectanebo II making offerings to Osiris and Horus; lot 773, a stunning Egyptian limestone stelophorous statue with inscribed stela; lot 845, an Attic black-figure neck amphora attributed to the Lysippides Painter; lot 889, a Roman mosaic panel with satyr; and lot 839, a very rare Apulian red-figure fish plate depicting 15 sea creatures.

Selected lots are accompanied by historical and authentication reports from Lisa Sartini, Egyptologist PhD of Chimera Heritage Consultants, Alessandro Neri, an international cultural heritage expert based in Florence, and Simone Musso, consultant curator for Egyptian antiquities at the Stibbert Museum in Florence and member of the Nuri Archaeological Expedition, as well as Colnaghi reports available upon request. Certain objects are further supported by German export licences, original gallery paperwork, Art Loss Register confirmation letters, and scientific XRF metal analyses confirming material consistency with the attributed historical periods. The collection also includes pieces studied by W. G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology at the University of Birmingham.

751. HUGE EGYPTIAN COFFIN MASK

Late Period, Ca. 664 - 332 BC.

A coffin mask with a layer of plaster overlay and painted surface. The face is broad and tapering, painted in a reddish pink, with large almond-shaped eyes outlined in black, heavy arched brows, a straight nose, and a small closed mouth. The head is covered by a striated headdress painted in alternating black and yellow bands. The reverse retains dowel holes for attachment. A fragment of limestone relief, preserving the profile of a royal figure, probably Akhenaten, facing towards the Sun\ God Aton. The head is elongated in typical Amarna style, with a prominent jawline and slender neck. The figure wears a blue-painted close-fitting cap crown. Traces of red pigment remain across the face. On the left, the rays of light, indicated by the yellow pigment, are blessing the royal figure.

754. LARGE EGYPTIAN WOODEN SARCOPHAGUS MASK

A carved wooden mummy mask with a broad tripartite wig and an elongated false beard. The facial features include a prominent nose, full lips, and wide-set eyes beneath defined brows. The back is deeply hollowed and includes rectangular slots at the edges for attachment.

A terracotta vase with an elongated ovoid body tapering towards a pointed base. The surface is painted in blue, black, and red pigments on a reddish-orange ground. The upper section is encircled by a register of lotus buds, bordered by horizontal bands. 758. RARE EGYPTIAN BRONZE STATUETTE OF AMUN KHNUM

A bronze statuette of the god Amun depicted nude and striding forward with the left leg advanced. The figure is criocephalic, bearing a ram’s head with curved horns, and wears a tripartite wig surmounted by the Red Crown of Lower Egypt. Traces of gilding are visible on the eyes, the base of the crown and on the wig.

A painted stucco panel with the head and upper body of a man depicted in profile to the left. He wears a close-fitting garment and holds a sechem staff diagonally across the chest. The staff identifies the man as a high-ranking dignitary. The face and arm are rendered in red, with the wig in black and details in grey and red against a pale ground. WITH LOTUS FLOWERS, PAPYRUS STEMS AND ANKHS

A large pottery jar with a biconical body tapering to a pointed base and a tall neck with an outward-flaring rim. The surface is painted in red, blue, and black on a buff ground. The neck is decorated with two registers of vertical petals framed by horizontal bands. The main frieze on the shoulder comprises two stylised lotus flowers with upward-curving stems, a large ankh sign flanked by paired papyrus stalks, and a second ankh flanked by Nilotic plants. 762. EGYPTIAN PAINTED WOODEN COFFIN PANEL OF NEFER-KA

A rectangular wooden coffin panel from the interior of a box-shaped coffin, assembled from several fragments. The surface is covered with a stucco ground and painted with a vertical hieroglyphic inscription nam- ing Nefer-ka. Circular mounting holes for dowels are preserved at the top and along both long sides. Mounted in a modern frame. Inscription: On the front, framed by a multicoloured band, a line with a hieroglyphic inscription in black (above): “ImAk(w) Nfr-tp-KA” (“ The Honourable Nefer-ka.”) Below, in nine columns of black, a cursive (hieratic), frag- mentarily preserved inscription with a text from the corpus of so-called coffin texts belonging to afterlife literature.

763. EGYPTIAN SARCOPHAGUS PANEL PARTIALLY GILDED, WITH EMBALMING SCENE AND DEITIES

A mummy cover with a multi-rowed neck collar, each end terminating in a falcon head with a sun disk on its head, and a gilded pectoral on the chest. At the top is a winged falcon with a sun disk on its head and two feathers in its talons. At the centre is the winged sky goddess Nut, with a sun disk on her head, adorned with two feathers. Below is a depiction of the Judgment of the Dead with the cradle scene of the heart (cf. the vignette for chapter 125 of the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead). Below is an embalming scene, with the deceased lying on a lion-shaped embalming table, beneath which are the four canopic jars containing the deceased’s entrails. The canine-headed necropolis god Anubis bends over the body during the embalming process (cf. the vignette for chapter 151 of the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead). To the left of the embalming table is the anthropomorphic protective goddess Nephthys, and behind her is Hapi, the baboon-headed son of Horus, protective god of the liver. To the right is the anthropomorphic protective goddess Isis, and behind her is Imsety, the anthropomorphic son of Horus, protective god of the lungs. At the bottom, is the solar barque with its divine crew. The left border of the cover shows various protective deities arranged one below the other. The right border shows the four sons of Horus responsible for the embalming of the liver, lungs, stomach, and intestines: Imsety, Hapi, Duamutef, and Qebehsenuef.

766. RARE EGYPTIAN GRANODIORITE TEMPLE STELE FRAGMENT WITH NECTANEBO II MAKING AN OFFERING TO OSIRIS, HOR

Late Period, 30th Dynasty, reign of Nectanebo II, Ca. 359 - 341 BC.

A granodiorite upper section of a temple stele, preserving a ritual scene with Nectanebo II at right, only the upper body surviving, wearing the double crown and raising the hieroglyph for “field” in offering before Osiris, Horus, and Isis standing opposite. Above the field sign are two royal cartouches with the names of Nectanebo II. The upper circular area is occupied by a winged sun disk flanked by two uraei suspended at the sides, each with a shen ring and two horizontal ostrich feathers. 767. RARE LIFE-SIZE EGYPTIAN STONE CAT / SEKHMET

A limestone sculpture depicting a seated feline with front paws extended and hind legs folded beneath the body. The head is held upright with upward-facing ears, prominent cheeks, and a short, rounded snout. The eyes are closed, and the mouth is slightly curved. A black stone pendant amulet of Taweret standing on an integral base, with a hippopotamus head, pendulous breasts, a full belly, and a crocodile tail at the back. Her arms rest along the sides of the torso. The goddess wears a tripartite wig falling onto the shoulders. A suspension lug projects behind. SANDSTONE TEMPLE RELIEF WITH A GODDESS

A Nubian sandstone relief with the upper body of a goddess carved in high relief, depicted in profile to the right. She wears a tripartite wig and a broad collar. Her left hand holds the hieroglyph for “year” and her right hand is raised before her. Probably from a temple complex in Nubia, possibly Kalabsha. Mounted on a modern base. 771. EGYPTIAN RED QUARTZITE BLOCK STATUE OF A PRIEST, POSSIBLY YUYA, PRIEST OF MIN AND FATHER OF QUEEN TI

New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, Reign of Amenhotep III, Ca. 1391 - 1353 BC.

A red quartzite block statue of a seated priest, the figure crouching with the arms folded over the knees drawn up beneath a long, plain skirt. The face is finely carved with almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, a straight nose, full lips, and large ears, beneath a smooth shoulder-length wig. A cheetah skin is draped over the back and shoulders, with the animal mask and forepaws falling onto the chest. The skirt is belted at the waist and extends over the legs, with a long triangular front pleat. An elaborate sporran hangs from the belt, carved with vertical elements and a rectangular lower panel. A rectangular sandstone stele with a domed top, finely carved. The composition presents the lion-headed goddess Sekhmet standing in profile to the right, wearing a tripartite wig and a sun disk. She faces the god Ptah, who is partially preserved, holding a was-sceptre. The Horizontal hieroglyphic inscription atop the god reads: “Ptah Lord of Maat, chief of the gods”. In front of the goddess Sekhmet, two columns of hieroglyphic text read: “Sekhmet the Great, beloved of Ptah, Mistress of the Sky, Mis- tress of all Gods.” In the second register, on the right side, Djehutymose is kneeling in adoration gesture, leftward. In front of him, six column of hieroglyphic text reads from left to tight: ‘Give adotations to Ptah beautiful of face, kiss the ground for Sekhmet Lady of the Two Lans by the Uab-priest chief of the altar in the temple of Ptah Djehutymose’ (he say): ‘Adorations ti thee father of the gosd, who rised the sky, who created the heart. A wood mummy mask with a stucco overlay and painted surface. The face is painted red, with almond-shaped eyes outlined in black, arched brows, a broad, straight nose, and a small, closed mouth. The head is covered by a wig painted in alternating black and yellow stripes, framing the face and falling to the chest. Below is a broad, multi-rowed collar with bands of geometric and floral ornament. The reverse is hollowed, with the wood surface left plain. A limestone rectangular offering slab carved in the form of a hetep (“offering”) hieroglyph, with a shallow drainage groove at the top. The central field is in raised relief with tall libation vessels at either side, together with loaves of bread, an ox shank, a goose, and a rib. 787. MONUMENTAL EGYPTIAN BASE OF A SCULPTURE BELONGING TO THE MASTER HORIRAA

Second half of Dynasty XXVI, Ca. 664 - 525 BC.

A lower fragment of a granite sculpture of a high-ranking person in Egyptian society on a rectangular base. Thanks to the conservation of this lower part we can infer what the pose was: the person would have been kneeling with his knees touching the ground, the feet behind balancing on the toes, the back held straight, the gaze to the front and the arms straight by the sides most probably holding a temple or naos on his lap. This typology of sculpture is called a naophoros (temple-bearer) a classical archetype of the effigies of the nobles who consecrate sculptures in their name in order to gain favour with the gods. These naophoros appeared in the New Kingdom, in Dynasty XIX, but their use was generalised in the Ptolemaic Period. Many examples can be found in various museums, one of the most beautiful is the naophoros of Uah-ib-Ra Mery-Neith conserved in the Museum of Archaeology of Naples, in Italy. Carving of registers of hieroglyphics occupies the space on the base (and even in some cases, part of the surface of the figure). On this piece the sculptor placed the inscriptions in three horizontal registers on the sides and front of the base, another register on the upper surface and another three horizontal ones on the dorsal pillar. This text has been studied and translated by the French Egyptologist Olivier Perdu: UPPER PART AND ALONG THE BASE: “The host near the king of the Upper and Lower Egypt Neferib living as Ra, the Director of the Antechamber Horiraa, says:Oh my Lord, how happy is he who has your love, and how it fills the heart of your servant! Dignity has been given to me that is, to your Ka. You make me grow among your subjects. The heart of the king is satisfied with what I have done; he sees me as the only one loving his master, suitable to open his heart. I welcome his heart in all its splendour and he distributes my affection throughout the earth. My nature is good; I am always happy, as is my heart; it never reveals itself against them, the courtiers praise my calm. Standing before your stele, I have asked you to put an end to me so that I may reach my grave, he who has no sins, is just (like god) and is likeable. With the favours of my king, the King of Upper and Lower Egypt Wehemibre living eternally like Ra. Be conscious of what I request of you, all the priests who pass (…..) their, soul, saying: That you may have your bread, that you may have your beer, that you may appear as Ba alive, that you may have (any) transformation (that you wish for), (is) a guest near the King of Upper and Lower Egypt (Wehemibre) living eternally as Ra that the director of the antechamber Horiraa. (As I am) a guest near his master, who employed him for his children.(Oh) all errands which have been sealed and which travel on my way, as far as I have performed, you realise that I have been given back my reward. So venerate me!”. DORSAL BASE: “(An offering which the king concedes to … that an offering is awarded) invocation- bread, beer, cattle, fowl, pieces of alabaster, incense and oils – (any) thing (…for the Ka of the governor, the bearer of the seal of the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, only friend (…) confidential matters associated with the two uraei and the director of the antechamber”. This noble, Horiraa, was an eminent figure in the royal court. He distinguished himself as the tutor of the sons of (Nekau, Neku) Necho II, and therefore was the tutor of the following pharaoh, Psamtik II. As a reward for services rendered to the royal family, he obtained during the reign of Apries (the successor of Psamtik II) the possibility to be buried with a quantity of funerary goods fitting a king. His tomb was found in the Memphis necropolis at Saqqara (LS23) comprising two chambers accessible through a shaft. The importance of this piece in question lies in the information it supplies, and the fact that it can be attributed to an important courtier in the Nile kingdoms. Eight sculptures are in existence which were made in his honour. These are: Naophoros faience sculpture conserved in the Museum of Cairo (CG 807)/The lower section of a naophoros sculpture conserved in the Museum of Cairo (CG 658)/Lower part of a naophoros sculpture conserved in the Museum of Cairo (N 9107)/A bronze group conserved in the Louvre Museum (AF 1670)/A base, Stockholm NME 43./ Three sculptures which are privately owned. However, in the Louvre Museum in Paris the table of offerings (D65) can also be found with the set of four canopic vases (N 2968, N 2969, N 2972 y N2974). The face is painted red, with large almond-shaped eyes outlined in black, arched brows, a broad nose, and a small, closed mouth. A black tripartite wig frames the face and falls onto the chest. The chest is adorned with a broad usekh collar of multiple rows, decorated with rosettes, plant motifs, and teardrop-shaped pendants, centred by a counterpoise. A wood headrest of Nefer (the Perfect One) from the funerary equipment, with a hieroglyphic inscription on the front and back. On the front, in the column running along the shaft, is a blessing formula invoking an unnamed deity to bestow “health and life upon the Ka (the personality or life force) of a deceased person named Nefer,” with the epithet com- monly used for the deceased: “one who renews life.” On the back, in the column running along the shaft, is an offering formula, beginning with “A sacrifice that the king gives” and ending with the name of the village of This (Thinis), located in the 8th Upper Egyptian nome near Naga ed-Deir, thus allowing this object to be geographically located.

He is praised in the morning (and) appeased (him) in the evening, when the soul (Ba) of ?qA-crq (?) A wave pattern runs around the rim, with a laurel wreath below. The lower body is framed by a wave pattern above a band of meander. Side A shows a funerary offering scene centred on a seated woman beneath an architectural naiskos with columns with Corinthian capitals, a tympanum, and palmette acroteria, the structure set on a three-step podium. The woman sits three-quarters to right on a square stool, dressed in a chiton fastened at the shoulders by two fibulae, with a stephane and a mirror held in the raised hand. On either side stand young women in floor-length chitons, one extending a patera towards the seated figure. Side B shows two women in the “Lady of Fashion” style flanking an offering pedestal, one holding a patera and situla, the other with a mirror and a box. 880. GRAECO ROMAN MARBLE STATUE OF CROUCHING APHRODITE / VENUS

This under-life-size (ht. 50 mm) Graeco-Roman marble sculpture of a “Crouching Aphrodite” presents a sensuous figure of the goddess with a surface that shows evidence of age and damage. Her body, originally rendered with smooth contours, has various breaks involving her head, raised right arm, lowered left arm, and front parts of both feet. There are also small chips visible along the surface of the remaining parts of the limbs and edges of her body. The marble shows uneven discoloration, ranging from warmer, yellowed tones to grayish patches, suggesting prolonged exposure and possible burial conditions. A subtle patina extends over the surface of the figure. Areas of abrasion and weathering further obscure somewhat the finer anatomical features, with minor accretions and surface staining. A gilt-bronze situla with a broad mouth, a deep rounded body, a flaring foot, and a swing handle attached at opposed side lugs, decorated with vine scrolls and clustered pellets, with a saltire at the centre. The exterior is encircled by bands of scrolling vine ornament at the shoulder, lower body, and foot. The main frieze is gilt-inlaid with a seated robed figure of Christ holding a staff, seated on a pile of rocks and set between two palm trees within a landscape populated by various animals and birds, including a sheep, a pair of hounds, a bear, a goat, a frog, a cockerel, a hen, an eagle, a horse, a lioness, a snake, a rabbit, a boar, and a cow, with further birds perched among the branches. On the opposite side is a circular medallion with the Chi-Rho flanked by alpha and omega.

In the centre, a Master of Animals figure is surmounted by a further human head, each with a pair of outstretched arms grasping the long arched necks of confronted beasts, issuing from cock heads at the lower corners and ending in animal heads at the top. The composition is surmounted by a knopped terminal.
