We are pleased to announce our fine Ancient Art & Antiquities- The Prince Collection auction. Commencing on the 12th of April at 1 pm BST the sale will be held at our central London showroom 63-64 Margaret Street W1W 8SW, with bidding in-room and online.

The auction holds a distinguished collection of ancient art and antiquities, cultures ranging from ancient Mediterranean to Early Medieval Europe.

Featuring an exceptional array of Roman & Greek marble sculptures, in particular lot 599, Aphrodite like Naiad of a Fountain or Spring. Sculptures in this tradition, often associated with fountains and gardens, exemplify the Roman interpretation of Greek sculptural ideals and the enduring allure of mythological imagery associated with water, beauty, and renewal. Equally notable is lot 592, a life-size bronze sandalled foot, the surviving fragment of a monumental statue that likely represented a Roman Soldier, cavalryman or military figure. These imposing bronze sculptures once played a vital role in the visual language of Roman public and honorific monuments.

Other highlights include: Lot 562, an impressive Apulian red-figure calyx-krater attributed to the Varrese Painter, one of the foremost masters of South Italian vase painting in the fourth century BC. Later centuries are evoked by a remarkable Merovingian sword, lot 647. Featuring a garnet-inlaid guard and gold hilt, a prestigious weapon that reflects the refined metalworking traditions of early medieval aristocratic culture.

The auction also benefits from an exceptional selection of notable provenances including the Prince Collection, distinguished by its royal associations. Other important names include Immanuel Birnbaum, Wladimir Rosenbaum, Francesca Zijlstra, Elsa Bloch-Diener.

505. UPPER PART OF A LID OF EGYPTIAN WOODEN COFFIN

Third Intermediate Period, 22nd-25th Dynasties, Ca. 945700 BC; probably from Lower Egypt.

An upper part of lid of a wooden coffin decorated with polychrome painted gesso. It features a vulture headdress over a striped archaic wig, with a central black scarab symbolising regeneration. The pinkhued face displays pronounced black-outlined eyes and eyebrows. The closed hands are adorned with coloured designs, possibly representing richly patterned gloves. For similar see: J. H. 506. MAGNIFICENT EGYPTIAN PAINTED ALABASTER CERIMONIAL JAR

New Kingdom, Ca. 1550 - 1069 BC.

A ceremonial jar carved from alabaster with a tubular body ending in a rounded base and a straight cylindrical rim. The upper portion is decorated with a painted frieze of stylised lotus columns. Below, a large central panel depicts a vertical arrangement of three floral elements: a lotus blossom flanked by two poppy seed capsules. A large terracotta askos with an elongated tubular body, slightly tapering towards one end and finished with flat circular terminals. A wide cylindrical spout rises from the upper surface, with two strap handles springing from the shoulders to the rim on either side.

A pottery jar with a globular body narrowing at the shoulder to a tall cylindrical neck with a thickened everted rim. The neck is encircled by horizontal bands in red, blue, and black, with a frieze of upright blue petals alternating with red stamens, and a toothed band. The shoulder is decorated with a frieze of alternating fan-shaped buds with pointed petals, bounded above and below by further bands. The lower body is left plain. 511. COMPLETE EGYPTIAN MALE SARCOPHAGUS

Late Period to Ptolemaic Period, Ca. 450 - 300 BC.

A complete male sarcophagus of sycamore fig wood, stuccoed and painted, the exterior coated with a black, bituminous-looking layer upon which the polychromy is applied, with inscriptions and details of the beard and wig painted yellow and the decoration highlighted with white. The coffin is of mummiform type with a pedestal and a proportionally large head. A system of tenons and mortises, cut into the thickness of the sides, secures the coffin and lid. The decoration extends over the exterior while the interior is left in its natural state. The lid presents an elongated face with a relatively thin nose and well-shaped nostrils, rounded chin, and large rounded eyes with black iris against white of the pupil, framed by a three-part striped wig with prominent ears, the rounded wig slightly hollowed at the shoulders and the horizontal base of the fringe marked by a dotted line in yellow, with a thin curved braided beard attached to the chin. A multi-tiered usekh collar covers the chest, and the remaining surface is filled with a structured, dense, symmetrical arrangement of worship scenes, deities, and texts in rapid compact script, including the owner’s name and his parents’ names occupying around a third of the inscriptions alongside offering formulae and invocations. At the centre of the torso, a winged Nut spreads her wings, flanked by superimposed vignettes in two registers to left and right of a goddess, the drawing partially erased, with vignettes below of the four sons of Horus, Imsety, Hapi, Duamutef, and Qebehsenuef. The feet show reversed text and decoration facing the front, with Anubis in mirrored form as a jackal lying on a canopic chest, while the back shows the goddess of the West, identified by a falcon on her headdress and an ostrich feather, the body presented by the goddess of the West and received by the sky goddess. 514. EGYPTIAN GRANODIORITE HEAD OF THE GOD AMUN WITH THE FEATURES OF KING TUTANKHAMUN

Late 18th Dynasty, Ca. 1336 - 1295 BC.

A remarkably rare black stone (granodiorite) head of god Amun, with a flat cap. His small eyes are separated by a curved depression from the rounded brow ridge; his broad face shows full lips with sharp contours, and, from the side, a slightly drooping chin. The depiction of the god resembles the facial features of King Tutankhamun. The carving is of fine quality, suggesting the religious importance that this piece played in antiquity. The item is accompanied by a high-quality custom-made stand. An ivory nude female figurine carved with a long, slender body and a pinched waist, the arms held across the abdomen and the legs fused into a tapering lower point for insertion. The torso is modelled with pendulous breasts and a drilled navel above a pubic triangle. The head has an oval face with lightly cut features, beneath incised hair falling in long sections to the shoulders, and the feet are schematically rendered at the lower edge. 521. EGYPTIAN ANTHROPOMORPHIC WOODEN SARCOPHAGUS LID

Late Period, 26th Dynasty, Ca. 664 - 525 BC.

A stunning wooden anthropomorphic sarcophagus lid, hand-carved from cedar and covered in layers of bitumen. The face is presented with elongated ovoid eyes, a slender nose, ears, and full lips above a rounded chin. Beneath the chin is a false beard with a yellow point, and above the forehead is a highly stylised floral motif representing immortality. The verso is hollow to fit around the form of the deceased, and mortises along the verso illustrate how it would have attached to the lower sarcophagus. The verso is adorned with rosette ornamentation at the level of the usekh collar.

A composite wooden statuette of Ptah-Sokar-Osiris in three parts, showing the mummiform god standing above a rectangular platform and fixed at the rear. He wears an atef crown with ram’s horns, a solar disc and tall ostrich feathers. The decoration is polychrome and glazed. A multi-strand necklace and a beaded pectoral are painted across the chest. Below is a naos-shaped amulet with figures of the deceased, Anubis and a goddess, flanked by uraei. A winged kheper appears beneath, framed by udjat eyes and birds, and a panel of three vertical hieroglyphic columns completes the scheme with a prayer to Osiris for the deceased. A painted wood figure of Osiris shown mummiform, with a long tapering body set on a rectangular base and the arms bent at the elbows with the forearms crossed on the chest. A wooden sarcophagus mask depicting a stylised face with heavy-lidded almond eyes beneath incised brows, a long nose, and a closed, narrow mouth. A plain headdress frames the face, with a broad band across the brow. The reverse is flat and pierced with a series of circular holes for attachment, with surviving wooden dowels in places.

A wooden mask from a sarcophagus with a rounded face, short nose, and narrow, slightly curved lips. The eyes are almond-shaped and defined with black cosmetic lines extending towards the temples. A stunning sandstone panel with two main figures. The first is a woman, possibly a goddess consort like Mut or Amenet, or a clerical figure known as the Divine Adoratrice. She has her partial right arm extended and is dressed in a sheath gown, adorned with a large wesekh pectoral collar around her neck. Her headdress resembles a vulture, with its wings draped behind her ears, lappets down to her breasts, and a pair of ostrich feather plumes partially visible on top. This suggests her role as a Divine Adoratrice of Amun, and she is holding an ankh (the cross symbol). The second figure is a man seated on a large chair upon a stage. He wears a short skirt, and his bald head is crowned with feathers.

An Egyptian fragment of a funerary stela. This is likely the second register of the stela: the offerings for the deceased and part of his son’s face performing funerary offering are still visible. The deceased son’s name is recorded in the hieroglyphic inscription above the scene: “ his beloved son Ptahemheb”. Below this inscription, an attendant is depicted with a head-cone, which is a type of conical ornament used in ancient Egypt. This ornament is often seen in paintings and bas-reliefs but was only confirmed through archaeological evidence in 2009. To the right, a broad register displays votive food offerings, suggesting that the context of this relief served a religious or ceremonial role.

The main face is centred by a cast, champlevé-enamelled figure of the crucified Christ, wearing a short perizoma and a crown, the terminals fitted with champlevé-enamelled figures of the Evangelists. The field is engraved with cross-shaped motifs and inlaid with circular and oval gem settings arranged along the arms. The reverse is centred on a circular champlevé-enamel medallion with a haloed figure of Christ, the right hand raised in blessing and the left holding a book. A riveted rectangular plaque with the IHS monogram sits above the medallion. Riveted lozenges with enamelled quatrefoils occupy the side arms, with two further lozenges below the medallion. The field is enriched with punched rosettes, and the terminals are fitted with additional champlevé-enamel panels. Mounted on a socket with a moulded knop, on a wooden base. This half life-size (73 cm) marble statue depicts a semi-nude female figure, sculpted with refined modeling and a meticulously polished surface. The torso, face, and arms are finished to a smooth sheen, while the marble displays a delicate orangish hue, most pronounced in the drapery, hair, headdress, support, and pitcher. She stands in a relaxed, elegant pose, her left leg crossing over the right in a distinctive variation of classical contrapposto. The drapery envelops her lower body at the front and sweeps across the back from the left shoulder to the ground, creating a dynamic interplay between exposed flesh and deeply carved, heavy folds. With her right hand, she gathers the drapery at her hip; her left hand holds a small pitcher resting upon a square support pillar at her side, its mouth turned outward. She wears a curved, crescent-shaped stephane—a headdress linked to both divinities and women of the imperial household. The form closely parallels crowns seen in representations of city goddesses and other idealized female figures from the Roman imperial period. The semi-nude treatment, crossed-leg stance, and presence of a pitcher supported on a pillar identify the figure as a naiad—a freshwater nymph. The highly polished surfaces and emphatically carved, weighty drapery folds align with a second-century A.D. stylistic attribution, when such “Aphrodite-like” nymph types were especially popular in decorative and fountain settings. A glazed ceramic footed bowl with a deep, carinated body and slightly thickened rim, set on a short stem and flaring foot. The exterior is decorated with incised vegetal ornament around the upper body. The interior is divided by an incised cross into quadrants around a central square panel, the fields filled with stylised foliate motifs, with a narrow wavy line below the rim. Finished beneath a pale glaze with green and light amber splashes.

A finely curved yataghan steel sword features a broad, forward-weighted blade that tapers to an acute point, its softly mottled surface bearing witness to age and use. The hilt, mounted with characteristic ‘eared’ grips of polished horn in warm amber tones, is secured by a chased gilt collar. The scabbard is fully clad in repoussé metal, densely engraved with scrolling foliage and floral arabesques arranged in symmetrical panels. Together, these elements embody the refined Ottoman aesthetic, seamlessly blending functional lethality with sumptuous ornamental detail.

728. POLISH LITHUANIAN CAVALRY SABER WITH SCABBARD

Ca. Late 19th - beeginning 20th century.

A Polish-Lithuanian cavalry saber with scabbard, Late 18th – early 19th century, most probably of Lithuanian lancer in Napoleonic army. Unique witness of turbulent fights by both nations for recently lost freedom just before the last partition of the state and just after it. The handle is Polish-Lithuanian, from the late 18thcentury (1790 circa). European blade of the same period as the handle, or slightly later, single edged, slightly curved, with golden Lithuanian Pogon inlaid on averse. As the blade bears no inscriptions or stamps of the producer, it can be of local manufacture. Scabbard characteristic to Napoleonic officers of lancers, most probably adopted to earlier national saber to fit regulatory requirements of the Napoleonic army. Upper mount of the scabbard is missing. W. Kwasniewicz, writing about Polish and Lithuanian troops from this period, writes that regulations were treated flexibly, and Polish officers carried French sabers with details of national tradition of 18th c. Some nobles came to fight even with 18th century sabers, and even scabbard used not always to be changed to regulatory one. (p. 89-90)

A flintlock pistol. Warsaw, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, 2nd half of 18th century. On the barrel near the lock there is an inscription “A. S ….. a VARSOVIE” (the first letter of the master’s name “A” and the first letter of the surname “S”, the master’s surname is not readable further on) and three incisors – vertically arranged letters

A and S in a rectangular field under the crown. The initials coincide with the surviving letters of the inscription’s name and surname, so are most likely the master’s marks. Carved walnut wood grip, with brass fittings and a brass trigger guard. Some cracking to the wood.

A polychrome glass fragment with a blue ground, featuring figural composition outlined in red. The central figure, depicted frontally, has a rounded face with large eyes, a straight nose, and a small mouth. A circular halo encircles the head, delineated with a thin red line. The draped garment, rendered in yellow, is embel- lished with flowing linear patterns accentuating the folds. To the left, a partially preserved figure appears in profile, with a stylized headdress or hood and elongated features. Curvilinear vine motifs extend across the background. A brass alloy oil lamp on a tall openwork stand, the base formed as a domed pierced foot with three splayed legs and lateral projections, rising through a baluster stem to a long cylindrical shaft with pierced panels and a second baluster element. A drip tray with a raised gallery is encircled by an engraved epigraphic band interrupted by roundels. The lamp is set on a short pedestal, with a rounded body and a projecting spout, the upper surface engraved with panels of geometric and vegetal ornament. An oval handle rises behind the reservoir and is surmounted by an elephant finial, with additional applied lugs around the shoulder, and a hinged lid with a small bird. A bronze lamp on a tall stand, raised on three splayed feet supporting a scalloped platform with a central dome. Engraved bands and roundels encircle the platform, above which a short collar supports a tall shaft built from a sequence of baluster elements. A wide circular drip tray with a raised beaded rim is set at the top of the shaft. Above sits an oil lamp with a shallow bowl on a flaring foot, with a projecting nozzle and a vertical loop handle surmounted by a bird-shaped terminal, and a hinged lid topped by a smaller perched bird; the exterior with engraved and punched ornament.

Northern Wei dynasty, Ca. AD 386 - 535.

An elegant hollow-moulded terracotta horse. This horse is modelled in a standing pose with its neck elegantly arched and its ears pricked forward attentively. The mane is indicated with the use of a scalloped red design with white dotted details. The head is well modelled with notched ears pricked on either side of a feather ornament, with a tasselled rope looped around the top of the neck and tufted ornaments on the chest collar, the back is covered with a long red cloth with white dotted detailing, gathered at the bottom atop the flaring mudguard. The rump is encircled by a series of intricate tassels, attached to a tufted back piece. This terracotta may represent a horse fitted for a parade. A fine terracotta relief depicting a three-headed and four-armed deity, likely Brahma, seated within an elaborate architectural frame. The central face is rendered with a composed, symmetrical expression, flanked by two additional heads in profile, each adorned with a tiered conical crown. The deity wears a broad necklace, armbands, and bracelets. The figure’s upper right hand holds a lotus flower, while the remaining hands rest in dhyāna mudrā (meditative gesture) upon the lap. The torso is well defined.
