ELECTRICAL

What should you look for when hiring an electrician?

O

ne of the best ways to find a good local electrician is by asking for recommendations from your friends, family, and neighbours. Hiring an electrician who’s already been tried and tested by someone you trust, and they were happy with the electrician’s work, then chances are they’ll do a good job. Electrical work can be dangerous if not done correctly. Registered electricians are trained to follow strict safety standards, reducing the risk of electrical fires, electrical shocks, and faulty wiring that could harm people or property. If unlicensed work causes damage or injury, your insurance may not cover it. Using a registered electrician helps protect your insurance

claims and avoid liability issues. Choose someone with experience in the type of work you need (e.g., rewiring, installing lighting, switchboard upgrades). A good electrician can offer practical solutions and advice, and they should be able to give you a detailed quote upfront. Ask if they charge hourly or per job and confirm any extra costs. Communication with any contractor is important. Are they polite, punctual, and easy to talk to? Do they return your calls or emails promptly? You should feel confident that they understand the job and can explain it to you. And on a final note, a good tradesperson leaves the job site safe and clean.

ARCHITECTURE

New homes, renovations and using an architect

O

ne of the biggest investments in our lifetimes is our home, whether building or purchasing one already on the market. Over the last few years, purchasing or building your own home has become harder, and more buyers are looking for different options when it comes to choosing where and how they are going to live. Having a new home built to specification is a tremendous opportunity to bring your vision to reality, and using an architect can add another dimension to your build, adding a bespoke

element. More often than not, when purchasing an existing home, you do so knowing that renovations may be on the horizon. Kitchens and bathrooms are common areas that homeowners look to update. While the thought of renovating can feel daunting, the guidance of an experienced architect or kitchen designer and installer can make all the difference. They can offer fresh ideas and practical solutions, ensuring every inch of space is used effectively.

INTERIORS

Style Your Space Without Spending a Fortune

C

ushions, rugs, throws, chair covers, bedding and pillows are the easiest way to make your home feel cosy, stylish and welcoming. We’re now seeing a gentle shift toward colour and a little more texture. A splash of paint, a feature wallpaper, or a mix of textures can instantly lift a room and give it personality, all without stretching the budget. Sustainability is also playing a bigger role in how we style our homes. Natural materials are becoming more popular, perhaps because they help us feel a little more grounded and connected. Soft pastel tones, olive greens and nature-

inspired colours are appearing more often, and the humble pot plant is well and truly back in favour, with garden centres offering more choice than ever. Floor cushions and rugs are also making a comeback, and it’s amazing how much difference a well-chosen rug can make, especially on hard floors, instantly softening and warming the space. And instead of replacing well-loved furniture, more people are choosing to have favourite pieces like couches or special chairs reupholstered. It’s a great way to give them a new lease on life while keeping something meaningful in your home.

WINDOWS

Windows and doors to a better home

T

he windows and doors in your home play a major role in comfort, energy efficiency, security and appearance. Whether you’re building new, renovating or upgrading an older property, investing in quality products and professional installation can make a noticeable difference. Glazing Having double glazing in your

home can have a positive influence on both your health and comfort. Double-glazed windows feature two panes of glass separated by a layer of insulating gas, helping to reduce heat loss, condensation and outside noise. They can also improve energy efficiency, making it easier and more affordable to keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer.

WINDOWS & DOORS

Double glazing became compulsory in new homes in late 2007 as part of increased insulation performance requirements. In addition to improving thermal efficiency, double-glazed windows offer greater security and can help protect furnishings from UV damage. Door Installation A well-installed door does much more than provide access to your home. Interior doors help create privacy, reduce noise between rooms and complement your home’s décor, while exterior doors play an important role in insulation, weather protection and security. Modern exterior doors are available in a wide range of materials, styles and finishes to suit both traditional and contemporary homes. When properly fitted, they help prevent draughts, improve

energy efficiency and provide reliable protection from the elements. Professional installation is important to ensure doors are correctly aligned, sealed and able to operate smoothly for years to come. Whether replacing a worn front door, upgrading interior doors during a renovation, or fitting doors in a new build, expert installers can ensure a quality finish and long-lasting performance. Professional Installation Matters Whether you’re installing double-glazed windows, interior doors or exterior entryways, professional installation is key to achieving the best results. Correct fitting helps maximise energy efficiency, security and durability, while also ensuring products perform as intended for many years.

KITCHENS

Kitchen Designers: Creating the Heart of the Home

A

well-designed kitchen is one of the most important spaces in any home. Whether you’re building or renovating, working with a kitchen designer can help you create a space that suits your lifestyle, maximises functionality, and reflects your personal style. Kitchen designers bring expertise in layout, workflow, storage, and aesthetics. They can help homeowners make the most of space, ensuring appliances, preparation areas, and storage work together efficiently. From compact kitchens to large open-plan living areas, thoughtful design can improve practicality and visual appeal.

Modern kitchens offer possibilities ranging from contemporary minimalist designs to warm, traditional family spaces. Designers can assist with selecting colours, materials, benchtops, splashbacks, lighting, tapware, and appliances to create a cohesive look. One of the greatest benefits of working with a professional designer is avoiding costly mistakes. They can identify potential issues before construction begins and recommend solutions that align with your budget and goals. Investing in good design ensures the space not only looks great but also functions efficiently for years to come.

KITCHENS

Kitchen Cabinetry and Joinery: Built for Function and Style

Q

uality cabinetry and joinery are the foundation of any great kitchen, combining practical storage with style and craftsmanship. Well-designed cabinetry helps maximise space, improve organisation, and create a polished finish that enhances the room’s overall look. Today’s homeowners can choose from a range of cabinetry options, including custom-made joinery, modular units, and flat-pack solutions. Whether you’re seeking a sleek contemporary design or a timeless classic look, experienced joiners can create cabinetry tailored to your space and requirements.

Modern kitchen cabinetry offers more than simple cupboards. Soft-close drawers, pull-out pantries, hidden storage, appliance garages, recycling stations, and clever corner solutions help make daily life easier and more efficient. Open shelving can also display decorative items while maintaining easy access to frequently used essentials. The choice of materials, finishes, handles, and colours plays a significant role in the kitchen’s appearance. Cabinetry can be paired with benchtop materials including engineered stone, laminate, timber, and granite to achieve the desired look.

PLUMBING & DRAINAGE

Plumbers don’t just unblock drains

W

hen we have a leaky tap, a blocked toilet or water pouring out of places it shouldn’t, we call the plumber. This only touches the surface of what a plumber does. Do you know that tree and plant roots can grow over twenty metres in search of water, and if you’ve ever dealt with a recurring drain blockage, there’s a decent chance that tree roots are at the bottom of it. It’s simple biology why tree roots block drains. Trees need water, nutrients, and oxygen, and your underground pipes are just what they are looking for. Cracks, loose joints, or porous surfaces in your drain can let out vapour or moisture. Nearby roots sense it and start growing

toward the source. Over time, those fine hair-like roots push their way in. Once inside, they expand, thicken, and form a dense mat that blocks the flow. Signs you need to watch out for are slow-draining sinks, showers, or toilets, frequent gurgling noises, foul smells coming from drains and sudden overflows or backups, especially after rain. If you’re experiencing one or more of these, and you’ve ruled out food or hair clogs, it’s time to look deeper and ring your local registered plumber. They will inspect, diagnose, and lay out your options clearly. When it comes to tree roots in your drains, ignoring the problem will not make them go away!

ROOFING

Stay on top of roof care

Y

our roof is one of the most important parts of your home, protecting it from the elements year-round. However, it’s often overlooked until a problem such as a leak arises. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent costly repairs and extend the life of your roof. Roofs should be both functional and visually appealing, but maintenance is best left to professionals. Roofing specialists can handle repairs, re-roofing, painting, cleaning, and the replacement of gutters, downpipes, and eaves. Homeowners should also be mindful of pests, as birds and rodents can cause significant damage by nesting in roof spaces, chewing wiring, or blocking ventilation systems.

Certain roofing materials require ongoing care. For example, clay tile roofs should be treated annually to prevent the growth of mould and lichen. Regular visual inspections can help identify issues early, allowing problems to be addressed before they become more serious and expensive. Gutters are another essential part of the roofing system and require frequent cleaning to prevent leaves and debris from causing blockages. While gutter guards can help reduce maintenance, they do not eliminate the need for regular attention. As roof and gutter work can involve ladders, heights, and scaffolding, engaging experienced professionals is often the safest and most effective solution.

Building a home that’s truly yours

Y

our home is more than just a place to live – it’s one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make. Whether you’re buying, building, or renovating, the process should be exciting rather than overwhelming. With property prices remaining challenging, many people are choosing custom builds and smart renovations to create homes that suit their lifestyle and reflect their personality. Building from scratch offers the freedom to design everything from the layout to the finishing touches. Whether it’s an openplan kitchen for entertaining or a luxurious spa-like bathroom, the possibilities are endless. Working with an architect can add creativity, functionality, and unique design features. While rewarding, building a home requires careful planning, patience, and the right team. Choosing a reputable builder is

essential. Look for professionals who belong to the Master Builders Association, giving you access to the Master Build 10Year Guarantee for added peace of mind. Do your homework before committing. Seek recommendations from friends, family, architects, or real estate professionals, and ask builders for references and examples of recent projects. Speaking with past clients can provide valuable insight into communication, workmanship, and problemsolving. A good builder will also manage permits, consents, and coordinate reliable tradespeople, helping to reduce stress throughout the project. Ultimately, transparency, communication, and quality workmanship are the foundations of a successful build.

ardens all come down to personal taste. Some of you may enjoy a structured garden, while others prefer the cottage style, and some prefer easy care. Starting a garden from scratch is easier than taking over an established property, although vision is required to be able to ‘see’ the final product. Landscape designers can help in this respect and have tremendous creative ability, offering ideas as well as solutions. You’ll need a wish list, an understanding of the climate, sun and soil and a budget! A plan of the section, to scale, will also be needed. Consider the immediate needs of your family and also how they might change in the future as the family ages.

Homescapes specialises in landscape design and construction throughout Wellington and Kāpiti, creating outdoor spaces that are practical, beautiful and built to last. www.homescapes.co.nz

Easy-care sections these days can be good-looking with judicious use of pavers, foliage, and other decorations. It is great to add some art into your garden, and having a water feature adds that touch of serenity to any garden. Fencing off unsightly areas in the garden by using decorative screens for privacy adds interest, and there’s a vast selection of sizes and finishes to choose from. Container gardening is popular, giving flexibility in that it can be moved around to create a fresh look. Pre-planted baskets, shrubs in pots, window boxes and flowers in unusual containers such as old boots, old bicycles, with appropriate drainage, can all create a stunning talking point.

STORAGE

Storage Solutions for a Simpler Move

W

hether you’re moving house, renovating, or simply running out of space, a storage facility can provide a practical and secure solution for managing your belongings. Many towns have storage providers offering a range of unit sizes to suit both short and long-term needs. One of the most common times people use storage is during a house move. Delays between settlement dates, downsizing, or temporary accommodation can leave homeowners needing a safe place to store furniture and household items. Having access to secure storage can make the moving process far less stressful and give you greater flexibility during the transition. Storage is also invaluable during renovations or building projects.

Clearing rooms of furniture and personal possessions helps protect them from dust, damage, and disruption while creating a safer and more efficient workspace for builders and tradespeople. This can help projects run more smoothly and minimise the risk of accidental damage. Most modern storage facilities offer clean, dry, and secure units, giving peace of mind that your belongings are protected and easily accessible when needed. Many also sell packing supplies, including boxes, tape, and mattress covers, making the process even more convenient. With flexible rental options and a range of storage sizes available, these facilities provide a simple and effective way to manage life’s changing circumstances.

Asbestos Awareness

I

f your home was built before the 1990s, asbestos could be present in some of its building materials. Once widely used in the construction industry, asbestos was valued for its strength, insulation properties, and fire resistance. However, it is now recognised as a serious health hazard. The risk arises when asbestos-containing materials are disturbed, releasing tiny fibres into the air. When inhaled or ingested, these fibres can become trapped in the body, causing inflammation, scarring, and potentially life-threatening diseases. Asbestos exposure remains one of the leading causes of work-related illness in New Zealand. Asbestos is commonly found in older cement sheeting, roofing products, flue pipes, vinyl flooring, and lino. Loose

ASBESTOS

asbestos may also be present in areas such as ceiling insulation, hot water pipe lagging, heaters, and older stoves. If you suspect asbestos in your home, it is important not to disturb the material. The safest approach is to identify and manage the risk by consulting a qualified professional. Licensed asbestos specialists can assess the material, arrange testing if necessary, and recommend the safest course of action. Whether the material requires monitoring, sealing, or removal, professional advice ensures the work is carried out safely and in accordance with regulations. When it comes to asbestos, if in doubt, call an expert and protect your health and home.

WRECKAGE

Car wreckers drive sustainability

W

hat do you do when your car is at the end of its life? Car wrecking businesses play an important role in the automotive industry, providing a practical and environmentally responsible way to deal with unwanted, damaged and end-of-life vehicles. Instead of sending old cars to landfill, wreckers carefully dismantle vehicles, salvaging usable components and materials that can be given a second life. Vehicles that are no longer economical to repair still contain valuable parts. Engines, gearboxes, panels, lights, wheels, electrical components and interior fittings can often be removed, tested and sold as affordable replacement parts. This provides motorists with a cost-effective alternative to buying new components and helps keep older vehicles on

the road. Car wreckers also recover materials such as steel, aluminium and other metals for recycling. Fluids, batteries, tyres and other potentially hazardous materials need to be removed and disposed of appropriately, helping to reduce environmental risks. For vehicle owners, wrecking businesses can offer a convenient solution when a car has reached the end of its useful life. Some businesses purchase unwanted or damaged vehicles, arrange collection and handle the dismantling process. By combining recycling, parts recovery and responsible vehicle disposal, car wreckers contribute to a more sustainable automotive industry while providing an important service to vehicle owners and repair businesses.

AUTOMOTIVE

Servicing Your Vehicle Matters

R

egular servicing is one of the best ways to keep your vehicle safe, reliable and running efficiently. Routine maintenance helps identify potential problems before they become costly repairs, while ensuring key components such as brakes, tyres and steering remain in good working order. A well-maintained vehicle can also improve fuel economy, extend the life of your car and help maintain its resale value. Many automotive businesses now offer convenient reminders for Warrant of Fitness (WOF) inspections and scheduled services, making it easier to stay on top of regular maintenance. Today’s vehicles are equipped with advanced

electronics and diagnostic systems, making professional servicing more important than ever. Qualified technicians have the tools and expertise to accurately diagnose and repair issues, helping to keep your vehicle performing at its best. Whether you need routine servicing, mechanical repairs, tyre replacement, battery testing, exhaust work or windscreen repairs, there are experienced automotive specialists ready to help. Don’t forget to regularly check your tyres and replace them when tread levels become low. Investing in professional vehicle care today can save money tomorrow while giving you confidence and peace of mind every time you get behind the wheel.
