Celebrating Northland

ROBINSON FAMILY HONOURED IN BUSINESS HALL OF FAME

A “truly legendary Northland business family” has become the first family inducted into The Northern Advocate Business Hall of Fame, recognising more than 50 years of contribution to Whangārei’s growth.

The Robinson family spans three generations behind two iconic companies: Robinson Asphalt and Greenfingers Growing Mixes. Their induction was announced at the Northland Business Excellence Awards on Friday, 7th November, celebrating their commitment to succession and regional development.

From Humble Beginnings

Peter and Joan Robinson laid the foundation in 1972 when they started Robinson Asphalt, followed by Greenfingers in 1986

Their vision was simple: provide quality services for Northland while keeping family at the heart of the business

Robinson Asphalt passed to the next generation in 1992 when daughter Annette “Annie” Johnston and her husband Alan “AJ” Johnston bought the company Today, ownership includes Annie and AJ’s sons Cole and Sam Johnston, plus Tom Taylor (partner of niece Jacqui Cole) and Sam Cowan Annie says she’s proud of the leadership team and 55 staff who uphold values of relationships, integrity, commitment, attitude and excellence

The company has shaped Whangārei through major projects like Whau Valley Dam, Pūtahi Park, and numerous school playgrounds Community support is central, with donations such as the Tutukākā playground and sponsorships for Sport Northland, Northland Rescue Helicopter, Northland Rugby, and more

Growing Greenfingers

Meanwhile, daughter Sharon Cole grew up working weekends at Greenfingers, learning to drive loaders and run the bark mill Today, Sharon and husband Murray Cole own and run the business, with son Max also part of the team Greenfingers employs 20 staff, including family members and long-serving employees who often return

Specialising in bark products and growing media for orchards and home gardeners,

Greenfingers boasts 15,000 loyal customers, some dating back to Sharon’s early days Like Robinson Asphalt, Greenfingers supports schools, kindergartens, and charities such as Kamo Rugby and Kidney Kids

“With family comes trust, and we’re a very trustworthy bunch,” Sharon says

A Vision Fulfilled

Peter Robinson, now 87, always hoped his family would join the businesses, though he never imagined the scale of involvement

Despite his age, Peter remains active, running Robinsons Storage in Te Kamo with Joan Over the years, the couple also renovated Playstead Homestead, managed orchards, raised horses, and even launched Turfcare Services, which took them as far as Pitcairn Island to build a prison

While overseas projects were exciting, Peter says Robinson Asphalt was always intended as a Northland-focused company: “Nobody was doing hot-mix by hand in Whangārei.”

The Hall of Fame honour is deeply meaningful for Peter, who sees it as recognition of decades of hard work and family dedication

Business and Family Intertwined

With so many family members involved, do gatherings turn into board meetings? Annie admits they try to enforce “no work talk” zones, but it’s not always easy Cole says big-picture decisions often happen after hours, while Sharon laughs: “No work talk is a fabulous rule, but in 87 years my father has never learnt it ”

WHAT’S THE SECRET SAUCE FOR NORTHLAND’S TOP EMPLOYERS?

AAs Northland celebrates another year of innovation and resilience through the Northland Business Excellence Awards, one category reliably captures the spirit of what it means to run a business in our region: Employer of Choice

Being a good employer in the North isn’t just about ticking compliance boxes It’s about culture It’s about community And, increasingly, it’s about the ability to balance commercial reality with the responsibility of creating workplaces where people genuinely want to stay

Northland businesses operate in a unique environment Many are small to medium enterprises where owners still work on the floor, know their staff by name, and feel the sting personally when someone leaves Leadership isn’t theoretical; it’s lived daily

A good employer here understands that recruitment can be harder in the North, retention is worth its weight in gold, and reputation spreads quickly The standouts are those who deliberately invest in their people

Fairness remains the foundation Whether it’s providing clear employment agreements,

consistent processes, or meeting obligations under the Holidays Act and Health and Safety at Work Act, good employers recognise that certainty builds trust Staff can tell when a workplace does the bare minimum – and they can tell when it genuinely strives to get things right

Northland’s best employers offer flexibility in meaningful ways: adjusting hours for whānau commitments, enabling remote work where possible, or rethinking roles to support long-term staff who develop new needs These aren’t perks They’re signals that people matter

Communication is another hallmark The strongest workplaces are those where staff understand where the business is going, how their role contributes, and what opportunities exist for growth That doesn’t always require a formal professional development programme Sometimes it’s as simple as a monthly chat, a chance to raise concerns early, and a willingness from management to actually listen

This year’s Employer of Choice judge, David Grindle, Director at WRMK Lawyers and Employment Law specialist, says “We

see employers who might not have the deepest pockets, but they treat their people with genuine respect,” he says “Good employers in Te Tai Tokerau understand that when they look after their team, the team looks after the business It sounds simple, but it’s amazing how often that principle is overlooked ”

Grindle notes that many finalists this year have embraced proactive wellbeing initiatives, not the glossy wellness days or one-off fruit baskets, but the quieter commitments Checking in on mental health Supporting staff through personal crises Making workloads manageable instead of heroic

Another trend among top Northland employers is a commitment to growing local talent Apprenticeships, entry-level pathways, training partnerships with education providers all help keep skilled people in the region

At its heart, the Employer of Choice award recognises something deeply Northland: that business success and people success aren’t separate ideas They rise together

As the awards spotlight this year’s leaders, the message is clear Being a good employer is no longer a competitive edge, it’s a necessity

WRMK Lawyers is Northland’s largest full service law firm, with offices in Whangarei, Dargaville, Kerikeri and Warkworth With 11 Directors, over 40 lawyers, law clerks and legal executives and a large team of support staff, WRMK Lawyers supports its clients in the areas of property, estates and life planning, dispute resolution, business and employment, construction, dispute resolution and criminal law
