Move More, Eat Well

With the gift of extra time, gentle physical activity can become part of your daily routine. Whether it’s a relaxed walk through the neighbourhood, a beginner-friendly yoga or Pilates class, or a few laps in the local pool, every bit of movement helps

Why not take it a step further and grow your own food? A small veggie patch not only promotes healthy eating but also gives you the satisfaction of growing something from scratch - and there’s always enough to share with friends or neighbours

A Pet for Company and Joy Retirement can also be the perfect opportunity to welcome a pet into your life. A small dog or cat can bring endless companionship, while also encouraging you to stay active and social. If you live alone, pets—whether furry, feathered, or even scaled can be wonderful daily companions

Plus, the responsibility of caring for an animal gives a sense of routine and purpose

Rediscover Reading and Film

Ever dream of curling up with a good book and not feeling guilty about it?

Now’s your time Those sunny corners, unread novels, and long-forgotten classics are waiting

And let’s not forget about the joy of a matinee movie - especially with those great senior discounts Grab a friend, some popcorn, and enjoy!

Staying Connected

Social connections play a crucial role in maintaining emotional health. Make time to reconnect with old friends, or reach out to new ones through clubs, walking groups, or community meet-ups.

A weekly coffee catch-up, a shared meal, or even a phone call can make all the

difference in keeping loneliness at bay and joy close at hand

Give Back with Purpose

Volunteering is a fantastic way to stay involved and feel valued. Whether it’s lending a hand at a local charity shop, helping at school reading programs, or offering tech help to those less confident, there are endless ways to give your time

Not only does it strengthen your community, but it also brings a wonderful sense of purpose and connection

Lifelong Learning and Hobbies

This is your time to explore passions you’ve put on the backburner Always wanted to paint? Join a local art group Curious about pottery?

Sign up for a class. Whether it’s writing, gardening, photography, or learning a new language, retirement offers the freedom to learn for the joy of it

Keeping your brain active is just as important as physical health

The Right Mindset

At the end of the day, how much you enjoy retirement often comes down to mindset You can choose to stick to daily chores or take this chance to explore, engage, and embrace your newfound freedom

Try the new café, say yes to the community event, or simply slow down and enjoy the moment

Retirement isn’t an endingit’s a beginning.

With a bit of planning and a positive attitude, it can be one of the most rewarding, vibrant, and healthy times of your life

Summer is on the way and if you have just retired, now is the time to purchase that e-bike you have been thinking about and head o on all the wonderful bike tracks we have in this country Don’t forget to slap on your sunblock, fill your water bottle, pop on your helmet, and then you’ll be ready to head off

Before purchasing your fore purchasing your e-bike, I suggest you have a good read of the following Consumer website that will answer a lot of your questions and help you make the right decision when it comes to making your purchase https://wwwconsumerorg nz/products/ electric-bikes

Why an e-bike?

Electric bikes amplify your pedalling power and your ability to do and see more. They’re quick and smooth, with predictable, easy-to-control power and a long-lasting removable battery that recharges from any household plug socket

Choosing the style

E-bikes come in various shapes and sizes, and you need to decide on the type of riding you will be doing before making a purchase.

There are e-bikes for mountain biking, city and commuter cycling, leisure and trail riding and even folding e-bikes

We all look for something di erent in a bike, but I remember a friend who bought one and she said that getting a step through frame made a big di erence to her being able to manage her bike, so that is something worth considering

Things to remember

Wherever you decide to purchase your e-bike from, make sure you test ride first E-bikes are heavy, and you need to make sure you can cope with the weight Also check that they can carry out any necessary maintenance and servicing of your bike

What is the cost of an e-bike?

Like buying a car, they vary in price, but you will want to look at spending a minimum of $4000 and spending $56000 for a really good bike You can pay less or pay more, but this is a good guide to start o with so start saving!

Getting kitted out

If you are planning to travel with your e-bike you are going to need a bike rack for you e-bike and you are going to need to be strong enough to put your bike on it

front and back are a handy addition, you will need a good bike lock and don’t skimp on that helmet It will pay to insure it as well Some riders have a set of town tyres and off-road tyres, but once again that is dependant on where you are going to take your bike.

Why a Will Matters

Creating a Will is one of the most important steps you can take to ensure your wishes are honoured and your loved ones are protected after you’re gone It gives you peace of mind and takes the pressure off your family during an already difficult time Without a valid Will, your estate could be distributed according to strict legal rules, which might not reflect what you would have wanted

What to Consider When Making or Updating a Will

1. Write or Review Your Will Creating a Will is one of the most

This Will’s Month, Lyn Cheyne, Director of Marketing and Fundraising at North Haven Hospice, answers some of the most common questions about why having a will matters and how easy it is to get started.

Whether you ’ re planning for your family, your pets or your legacy, having a will ensures your wishes are known and respected.

important steps you can take to ensure your wishes are honoured and your loved ones are protected after you’re gone It gives you peace of mind and takes the pressure off your family during an already difficult time Without a valid Will, your estate could be distributed according to strict legal rules, which might not reflect what you would have wanted

2 Appoint an Executor

This is the person who will carry out your wishes and manage your estate after your passing Choose someone you trust, and let them know where your Will is stored You may also wish to appoint a backup executor in case your first choice is unable or unwilling to act

3. Name a Trustee (if required)

If your Will involves setting up trusts - especially for minor children or vulnerable adults - appoint a reliable trustee to manage those funds in line with your instructions. It’s important they understand their responsibilities and are willing to take on the role

4 Store Your Will Safely

Keep your Will in a secure but accessible place, such as with your solicitor, a Will storage service, or in a fireproof home safe Make sure your executor knows where to find it and has permission to access it when the time comes

5. Take Legal Advice

While DIY Wills can be tempting, professional legal advice ensures that your Will is valid, legally binding, and tailored to your situation A solicitor can help you navigate complex family arrangements, inheritance tax, and ensure your Will meets all legal requirements

Sorting your Will during Wills Month is a timely and responsible step It’s not just about dividing assets—it’s about care, clarity, and easing the burden on those you leave behind

Plan Ahead. Protect What Matters.

Why is having a will so important, especially as we get older?

Having an up-to-date Will is one of the most important things we can do for our loved ones It can save a lot of time and financial and emotional stress for your family after your death It doesn’t matter how old you are or how much you own

A Will gives you peace of mind over the things that matter the most to you You can choose someone to manage the important things, someone to take care of your children, what will happen to your pets and who you would like to have the things you owned

What happens if someone passes away without a will in place?

If you die without having a will in place, no one can access your bank accounts or anything else you own, not your husband, wife or spouse, your partner, parents or children and it will cost your family to gain control over what you have left behind – no matter how large or little it is A court will appoint an

administrator to manage what is left and to give your things to your spouse and children according to set formulas If you have no family, what is left goes to the government

How does leaving a gift in my will help North Haven Hospice and the families you care for?

North Haven Hospice is incredibly grateful when we learn someone has left a gift in their will for us It means that whatever the amount, that person has thought of others and wants to help us continue providing the specialist care and support into the future We currently look after 600 people a year and their family and whānau and these gifts means we will be there in the future for the generations to come

How can North Haven Hospice’s free online wills tool help people get started?

It’s not hard to do at all Work out what you want to do first and then it only takes a less than 10 minutes of your time The instructions are simple and easy to follow with a step-by-step guide You will need to download and print your will out before getting it signed and witnessed to make it legally valid

A Brighter Energy Future for Northl

In the heart of Whangārei, a quiet but powerful transformation is underway - one that’s reshaping how energy is generated, shared, and valued across Te Tai Tokerau At the forefront is Kaumātua Energy, a community-based energy company with a bold vision: to create a fairer, cleaner energy future that puts people before profit and honours the kaumātua who have long been the pillars of our communities

Born on a cold winter’s day out of frustration with rising power bills and corporate energy models, Kaumātua Energy was founded on a simple but radical belief: energy is a necessity, not a luxury Too many elders in Northland face the heartbreaking choice each winter - turn off the heater or hot water to keep the lights on Kaumātua Energy is determined to change that

At the heart of its mission is energy justice - ensuring that seniors, whānau, and local businesses benefit directly from renewable energy initiatives The company’s innovative model is as practical as it is visionary By leasing rooftop space on schools, marae, community centres, and other public buildings, Kaumātua Energy installs solar panels that feed power back into the grid The revenue generated is then reinvested into the community

Currently, customers aged 65 and over receive a 10% discount on their power bills, with the goal of increasing that to 30% as the solar network expands Community households benefit from affordable local pricing, while partner businesses enjoy discounted solar installations and receive 20% of profits from surplus energy sold back to the grid

This approach flips the traditional

energy model on its head Instead of relying on centralised power stations and opaque pricing structures, Kaumātua Energy envisions a future powered by thousands of small, local solar hubs - each contributing to a self-sustaining network that prioritises transparency, sustainability, and community wellbeing

But the company’s commitment goes beyond solar panels It’s about fostering a culture of energy efficiency and environmental kaitiakitanga By encouraging local businesses to participate in solar generation, Kaumātua Energy is building a regional ecosystem where clean energy is not just a commodity, but a shared responsibility

What truly sets Kaumātua Energy apart is its deep respect for kaumātua - the elders whose wisdom, resilience, and aroha have shaped Northland’s communities In honouring them, the company is not only addressing energy hardship but also reinforcing the values of manaakitanga (care and respect) and kotahitanga (unity) It’s a model grounded in tikanga Māori and community empowerment, offering a blueprint for how energy can be both sustainable and socially just

As the world grapples with climate change and energy inequality, Kaumātua Energy offers a hopeful path forward It’s a reminder that innovation doesn’t always come from tech giants or global corporations - it can begin in a small town, on a school rooftop, with a vision to uplift those who’ve given so much

In Northland, the sun is more than a source of power - it’s a symbol of possibility And thanks to Kaumātua Energy, that possibility is being turned into real, lasting change

Too many kaumātua in Northland face a heartbreaking choice each winter—turn off heaters or hot water to keep power bills affordable. Kaumātua Energy, a Whangāreibased community energy company, is determined to change that

Founded on the belief that energy is a basic right, not a privilege, Kaumātua Energy is helping lift the burden of high power costs through a locallydriven, renewable energy model designed with elders at its heart

The company leases rooftop space on schools, marae, and community buildings to install solar panels The clean energy generated is sold back to the grid, and the revenue is channelled into community support including power bill relief for seniors facing energy hardship

This model doesn’t just lower costs - it builds resilience By creating a locally owned solar network, Kaumātua Energy keeps both the power and the profits within the community Local businesses also benefit through affordable solar installations and a share in surplus energy returns, creating a circular economy rooted in social good

“Our kaumātua should never have to choose between staying warm and putting food on the table,” says the Kaumātua Energy team “By working together, we can build a fairer, cleaner energy future for all”

In Te Tai Tokerau, this isn’t just an energy company - it’s a movement for energy equity, community empowerment, and respect for the generations who came before us

More Support, Better Healthcare, Safer Communities

For many seniors, life today can feel more complicated than it once was Rising costs, health appointments, and keeping up with everyday demands can all add pressure That’s why my message is simple, we are here to help Budget 2025 builds on that promise by delivering practical changes designed to make daily life easier and more secure

One of the most immediate ways we are helping is through extra support with rates From 1 July 2025, more seniors will qualify for the Rates Rebate Scheme. The income threshold is rising to $45,000; the

That’s why the Winter Energy Payment is being kept in place, helping you heat your home through the colder months Free off-peak public transport and free prescriptions for SuperGold Card holders remain too These are simple but meaningful ways of saying we’re here to help make life more affordable

Safety is part of feeling supported as well Extra backing for frontline police, a tougher stance on gangs, and efforts to reduce violent crime are about making sure seniors feel secure in their homes and communities

maximum rebate will increase to $805, and anyone receiving only NZ Super will qualify for a full rebate if their annual rates are over $2,000 That means around 66,000 more seniors will get support It’s one way of easing the load so you can feel more comfortable in your own home

Healthcare is another place where “here to help” matters most For those on longterm medication, repeat prescriptions can now be extended to 12 months – fewer visits, less cost, and more convenience Record investment is also going into hospitals and clinics, so care is easier to reach

Waiting times for common operations like cataracts, hips, and knees are being reduced, and more funding is being directed into medicines and cancer treatments

Importantly, progress is being made on the Whangārei Hospital redevelopment This will give our seniors access to modern, high-quality facilities close to home – an investment that reflects the value we place on making sure you are cared for where you live

Older people in Whangarei tell me that day-to-day costs still matter

Looking ahead, our Governments action also invests in education and savings for younger generations, because when we make these changes for our next generations today that means your children and grandchildren inherit a stronger, safer country

Taken together, these measures are about respect for what you have given to New Zealand, and reassurance that you are not on your own. Whether it’s with rates relief, better healthcare, or simply making everyday costs more manageable, Budget 2025 reflects our commitment, we are here to help

As the Whangarei MP, it is my privilege to serve you

Ihope when I retire that I can still garden. It is a past time that I really enjoy, and I am already looking at ways to make it easier

Especially when it comes to digging, planting, and weeding.

Sitting on a small seat or even a bucket is so much more comfortable than kneeling or it is for me.

The thing about gardening and being retired as you don’t have to rush to get things finished it will still be there tomorrow for you to complete, and you don’t have to rush off to work

Raised beds are so much easier to work in as you age, they make weeding easier as well.

You tend to find you don’t need to plant rows and rows of vegetable as you age as you just don’t seem to have the appetite you once had

Although it is nice to give vegetables to family and friends If you find having a vegetable garden is too much work for you, why not pop a few seedlings in amongst your flower beds or even a few in pots around the back door for convenience.

Healthy

gardening

Gardening is a healthy hobby, and every small bit of activity is great Even if you don’t have a garden, you could offer some spare time in a local community garden

Remember to wear a hat and sunscreen on days when it is hot Plus, a good pair of gloves is a great investment

If you decide you want a few hanging baskets, why not incorporate a few herbs into the basket of flowers I have seen some gorgeous baskets with parsley, thyme and even lettuces included into the basket design

I have friends who have their hanging baskets on a pully system so that means no ladders or climbing are involved.

Watering and tools

A watering system or strategically placed soaker hoses will help eliminate having to drag a hose around and makes watering a whole lot safer There are some very well made ergonomically designed tools on the market, and it is worth checking these out

What to grow

As you age, you may want to change your style of garden You may consider putting some of your garden back into lawn and

have some one come weekly to mow it and trim the edges. Maybe it is time for a small shade house or glass house.

You could start growing orchids or begonias and there may be a local club you can join

When some of your fruit or citrus trees get too hard to manage you could consider replacing them with dwarf ones
