Every day you benefit in some way Hawke’s Bay Regional Council’s work in your region, from Wairoa in the north to Porangahau in the south. Tui, bellbird, kereru are some of the birds flocking back to the Bay, thanks to the work of hundreds of local people. We’ve been working with farmers to keep possum pest numbers low on farms. Many homeowners are also helping to keep possum numbers down in town. So when you see native birds in your backyard, thank your neighbours.
When you need it, you need it! Protecting your land and property from flooding is a key role for HBRC. We maintain stopbanks (you ride on some of these on the Hawke’s Bay Trails), retention dams, drains and pump stations to keep flood water away from your homes, land, roads and work. We also have civil defence emergency management responsibilities and are ready to act when needed. The more we know about the region’s water quality, air quality, ecosystems, and soils, the better we can target work to protect or improve a resource. You may see our HBRC science staff at work around the region monitoring the state of the environment or investigating a resource to get data for key projects in biodiversity, catchment planning, water quality and land management.

101 Ways to Get Out More! Hawke’s Bay Trails have earned us the title ‘Cycling Capital of New Zealand’. It’s a great way to get out into our wonderful environment… plus wineries, cafés and a country pub or two! Map brochures are at all good bike outlets, i-site visitor centres, HBRC and online at www.hbrc.govt.nz Pakowhai Regional Park offers a tranquil stream, leafy walks and open spaces. Known to locals as ‘the dog park’, it’s a valued space to let dogs (and kids) run free. 5 minute drive from Hastings, 15 minutes from Napier or cycle there on the Trails. Tutira Lakes Regional Park has four tracks (from easy to a good workout) with wonderful views or take it easy with a picnic, fishing or short term camping. The park is in an outstanding natural area with conservation reserves, arboretums and beaches nearby. 40 minutes drive north of Napier. Pekapeka Regional Park lets you discover the ecology, history and culture of this important wetland. Explore the boardwalks,
learn more from the info boards, or bird watch. 15 minutes drive south of Hastings alongside State Highway 2. Waitangi Regional Park is where four rivers meet the sea between Awatoto and Haumoana. This special wetland environment is being enhanced and features the star compass by the sea (see photo). 10 minutes drive from Napier and Hastings or cycle there on the Trails. Te Karamu is a special stream and the community, schools and marae are helping us with enhancement projects to improve water quality and habitats. Walk or cycle along the banks, kayak the stream, or join in the annual duck race!

Rural Living Escape to the country One of the many advantages of living in Hawke’s Bay is the abundance of rural locations which are never really far away and generally within in commuting distance. Popular locations for those who enjoy rural lifestyles include Otane, the Tukituki Valley, Puketitiri, Poraiti, Eskdale and Waimarama. The attractions of leading the ‘Good Life’ include fewer neighbours, peace and quiet and privacy. Often there’s a rural school close by which is a popular draw card for families. Children too can enjoy the space, rear their own animals, have a small garden to tend and enjoy activities at home like motocross. A lifestyle block, typically 4-6 ha, is an excellent excuse to buy a ride on lawnmower! Rural property market Late autumn recovery There is currently a good selection of bare land and lifestyle properties throughout the Bay such as an executive style dwelling on 5 ha of orchard with direct access to the Tuki Tuki River, a 6 acre, 4 bedroom house close to Hastings offering an equestrian lifestyles and a home along with a vineyard. “Sales figures for the most recent three month period show a substantial lift in volume for May 2017 compared to the previous month of April 2017. However, those numbers have not reached the peak experienced during the similar period 12 months ago, nor matched the very strong performance recorded in March 2017,” REINZ Rural Spokesman Brian Peacocke says. “Reports from around New Zealand indicate an ongoing shortage of quality property, this most likely being reflected in the substantial upturn in values experienced over the last
12 months. The majority of regions have benefited from the increase in volumes and prices, the exceptions being Gisborne which remained on par, and the West Coast, where activity has slowed,” he concludes. The national median price for lifestyle blocks rose by $51,000 (+8.9%) for the three months to May 2017 compared to the three months to May 2016. New record median prices were recorded in Bay of Plenty at $760,000 and Nelson at $677,500. The median number of days to sell for lifestyle properties improved by nine days in the three months to May 2017 compared to the three months to May 2016 to sit at 49 days. Compared to the three months ended April 2017 the median number of days to sell improved by three days. Hawke’s Bay recorded the shortest number of days to sell in May 2017 at 43 days.

TE WAIROA HOPUPU HONENGENENGE MATANGI RAU (WAIROA RIVER) The Wairoa River is the focal point of the district. Visitors can explore the river and 17 historical sites along the 8km riverside walk and cycleway, leading from the lighthouse to Whakamahia Beach.
PORTLAND ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE The famous lighthouse came from Portland Island, off the southern end of M¯ahia Peninsula. It was relocated to the centre of town, making it a recognisable icon of Wairoa and a beacon for many locals. Be sure to see it after dark, when the oscillating light can be seen for many miles.
LAKE WAIKAREMOANA Lake Waikaremoana, in the elusive and stunning Te Urewera, is internationally renowned for its breath-taking beauty. It is also home to one of New Zealand’s nine great walks – the Lake Waikaremoana track.
MAHIA PENINSULA M¯ahia Peninsula, steeped in history, is a jewel of the district. It provides wonderful safe beaches, great surf breaks, rock fishing, diving, walks, golf and other outdoor activities. Rocket Lab now calls M¯ahia home with the development of their launch pad at the base of the peninsula. Commercial rocket launches are set to start in the not too distant future. Watch this SPACE!

Wairoa and Mahia Gateway to the galaxy Picturesque and friendly, the Wairoa District has a population of just over 8000, but thousands more describe it as home. It is a remarkable spot that offers something for everyone. A beautiful river borders the main street, which caters for urban coffee lovers and intrepid travellers who prefer to shop for the rugged wilderness adventures of hiking, fishing and camping. There are plenty of places to grab a bite, enjoy a coffee or sit beside the river and make use of the town’s free WiFi. People can enjoy the walkway and cycleway that stretches the length of the town riverbank right to the river mouth. The Wairoa River attracts water sports enthusiasts from around the country who row, sail, paddle in waka ama or take part in the annual Bridge to Bridge water ski event. Now an additional gem is being revitalised on the outskirts of the township - Whakamahia Beach, where the Wairoa River meets the Pacific Ocean. With its rugged coastline and wetlands, this part of the town has until recently been a bit of a secret. The summer months draw large crowds to experience the annual Wairoa A&P Show which is held over three days in late January. Well-known for its many sandy beaches and enticing surf breaks, Mahia is a beach-lover’s paradise. Several accommodation options are available, from camping to bach rental. Rewarding fishing, dive tours, surf lessons or simple walks on the beach are just a few of the activities on offer here. In late May the first of three test rockets was launched which has earned the area the title of “Gateway to the Galaxy.” The Rocket Lab launch pad is on Mahia Peninsula and has tremendous potential to rejuvenate the area.

Napier A treasure for all seasons
Napier is a city with many facets – an internationally acclaimed Art Deco treasure, a seaside holiday town, a paradise for coffee and food buffs, and a bustling retail and commercial centre. In 2016, and again this year, the Murals for Oceans Festival saw artists from all over the world participating in a global street art project. Havelock North The Village In between imposing Te Mata Peak and the fertile Heretaunga Plains sits Havelock North, once the home of early pioneers and now a prosperous, attractive and expanding village. It’s just a short drive from Hastings and therefore a popular residence for commuters who travel to both Hastings and Napier. Colloquially known as ‘The Village’, Havelock North is well known throughout Hawke’s Bay for its peaceful community atmosphere, boutique stores, cafés and restaurants. There’s a definite air of prosperity in the village centre which is enhanced by alfresco dining, a range of cafés, and an exciting range of speciality boutiques brimming with clothing, jewellery, shoes, hair and beauty salons, giftware, designer furniture, imported and artisan foodstuffs. Porters Boutique Hotel, incorporating Malo Restaurant, has recently opened in the heart of the village and with it are several new retail outlets. Recently the Village Green playground has been totally redeveloped and offers water features, swings, climbing frame and a skate park. It’s another welcome addition to the village centre. Hastings The Heart of Hawke’s Bay Hastings has a little of everything - town and country, history, commerce and culture, great weather, unique shopping, wineries and restaurants. A stroll through the city highlights the artistic talent on our doorstep with public art works dotted around the CBD for all to enjoy. For example, Suntrap by Neil Dawson is suspended above the city square and it changes colour depending on the angle from which it is viewed. Nearby, at ground level, a flock of sheep stand proudly in recognition of the strong links Hastings has to the rural hinterland. Hastings Icons is a multi-site installation work by Adrian Thornton with images connected to the theme of ‘Great things growing in Hastings’ - people, industries, ideas all represented on largescale screenprints on public walls. The Hastings City Art Gallery and Hastings Community Arts Centre, which hold numerous exhibitions throughout the year, are within an easy walk of the city centre as is the Hastings War Memorial Library. The Hastings iSite is based in the old Westerman’s building, a former department store and historic building dating back to the1930s. This should be a first port of call for information on what to see and do, and where to stay. The friendly staff has plenty of information for visitors and intending residents. There are many interesting Heritage Trails in the Bay with illustrated brochures promoting self-guided tours.
Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market held at the A&P Showgrounds every Sunday showcases artisan producers and gourmet produce. It’s a relaxed setting in which to shop, have a coffee, meet friends and enjoy some entertainment. Hastings is a shopper’s paradise, and a pretty one at that, with flower baskets lining the streets year round, and interesting shops catering to most tastes and desires.

While Napier is well-known as the Art Deco city Hastings also has many fine examples of Art Deco, Stripped Classical and Spanish Mission architecture that have been preserved throughout the city. The iSite has further information for those wanting to explore this particular aspect of Hastings. Locals are looking forward to the strengthening and re-opening of the Opera House which will add to the entertainment options in the city. The Hawke’s Bay Opera House is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most impressive examples of Spanish Mission architecture. The Bay Plaza is located in the heart of Hastings CBD and is the busiest shopping hub in Hawke’s Bay. The centre is anchored by some of the best known brands in New Zealand. There is plenty of onsite car-parking including a number of mobility parks and bike racks. The Park Mega Centre a little further along Karamu Road is a modern large format shopping centre with a variety store, a large hardware outlet, a café and a range of other businesses. There are plenty of opportunities in Hastings for sports enthusiasts such as the Hawke’s Bay Sports Park at the end of the Napier-Hastings Expressway. Cyclists will find Hastings a pleasure to cycle around as there are plenty of cycle lanes and pathways. Within the city is Albert Square a green space on the site of the former historic Albert Hotel. It’s a pleasant spot to
enjoy lunch in the warmer months and it’s also the site of the Night market which runs also during warmer months. Education Plenty of options Schools, colleges
There are plenty of state primary and intermediate schools throughout Hawke’s Bay with excellent staff and great facilities for academic, artistic, sporting and cultural studies. There are also several private schools in Havelock North including Hereworth Preparatory School, a private independent Anglican school with a first class reputation that takes day pupils and boarders. A number of single sex schools offer boarding options such as Iona College and Woodford House in Havelock North and Lindisfarne College in Hastings. Taikura Rudolf Steiner School in Hastings is a Waldorf School arising from the educational principles and anthroposophical impulses of Rudolf Steiner. The Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT) in Taradale is the largest provider of tertiary education for the east coast of the
North Island. EIT offers courses ranging from certificate level to postgraduate study. EIT aims to meet the demands of the region’s key industry groups as well as the wider employment market. It has a food and wine centre and an extensive range of viticulture courses. There are a number of other tertiary providers offering training on everything from teaching to hairdressing. Capturing the essence of spring again this year is Spring Fling, with September and October devoted to a host of events which starts with the Pukeora Festival in early September - an annual festival of art, music and food. Tickets go on sale on 8 August. The annual Otane Country Fair in February attracts hundreds of visitors to experience the atmosphere of this eclectic country festival.
