With the price of fuel staying high, we’ve been fielding lots of calls from people curious about catching the bus If you’ve never caught the bus in Palmerston North, Ashhurst or Feilding, now is a great time to start
The fully electric Palmerston North and Ashhurst network runs from most suburbs into Palmerston North’s CBD via key locations, such as the airport, schools and hospital The Feilding network involves an Orbiter service around the town, and a popular commuter link between Feilding and Palmerston North
Inland Revenue set the running costs of a petrol vehicle at $1 17 per kilometre for the first 14,000 travelled in a year, and those numbers are set to be recalculated at the end of May A typical commute can be about 10km in Palmerston North meaning you’re looking at possibly more than $11 a day in running costs for your vehicle That adds up over the course of a week

Compare those numbers to using the bus Travelling within Palmerston North and Ashhurst, you’ll pay no more than $1760 a week if you pay with a registered Bee Card That means you have the same bill every week no matter what, helping you to manage your budget and save fuel for when you really need it You can get a Bee Card from the iSite in The Square, Horizons’ office on Victoria Ave, online at beecard co nz, or on board the bus
Travelling by bus between Palmerston North and Feilding, as well as around Feilding, is set to be even better from July this year The buses will be fully electric, operate seven days a week, and have far more frequency than the current services Going electric will cut more than 120,000 litres of annual diesel use
The bus won’t always be faster than driving, but between the savings, the stress-free ride, and no parking headaches, it’s well worth giving it a go
