The Palmerston North Hospital Foundation has announced its latest project, fundraising for a world-class surgical robot that will transform surgery and cancer care for the central North Island.
Operated by skilled surgeons, a surgical robot helps make procedures more precise, leading to smaller incisions, fewer complications, and faster recovery Often used in the private health sector, there is currently only one surgical robot available in New Zealand’s public healthcare system, based in Auckland.
Chair of the Palmerston North Hospital Foundation, Brendan Duffy, says this is the core reason that the Foundation has launched this project. “Everyone should have access to the benefits of these surgeries, not just those who can afford to go private ”
Currently, Palmerston North Regional Hospital’s cancer services support 580,000 people Including patients from Palmerston North, Manawatū, Horowhenua, Ōtaki, and Tararua, but also Whanganui, Wairarapa, Taranaki, and Hawke’s Bay This robot will have a major impact on the countless cancer surgeries happening each year
“It’s also becoming a benchmark for talented surgeons - by having one, we can help Palmerston North Regional Hospital attract and retain
surgical staff, strengthening our region’s healthcare workforce ”
Dr Alberto Ramirez, Clinical Director of Surgical Services at Palmerston North Regional Hospital, says surgical robots allow surgeons to perform complex procedures with more precision.
“It magnifies what we’re seeing, highlights blood vessels and shows everything in a 3D view It has no tremor, can do minuscule cuts and rotate tools 360 degrees, which human wrists can’t. The surgeon completely controls the robot; it doesn’t make its own decisions. It’s a tool, but like using tweezers instead of BBQ tongs - it’s next level.”
The long list of operations that this can be used with includes kidney, prostate, bladder, hernia and gynaecology treatments; bowel surgeries; ear, nose and throat procedures; and many others. It’s been used over 14 million times globally, and on a wider range of patients, from infants to the elderly
“Major surgery has a big impact on a patient’s life and their wider whānau, so we need to make this accessible ” says Dr Ramirez “It’s exciting - I’m really passionate that this is something we can do to look after our region’s future It raises my blood pressure, in a good way!”
This is the second significant project for the Foundation, following the successful completion of the Hospital’s new Children’s Emergency Department.

Palmerston North rolled out a warm Manawatū welcome this week for a visiting delegation from our long-standing US sister city, Missoula, Montana
The delegation, led by Missoula Mayor Andrea Davis, spent the week exploring Palmerston North and the wider Manawatū region, culminating in a ceremony on Sunday to celebrate the refreshed Missoula Reserve in Kelvin Grove
Mayor Davis noted the strong similarities between the two cities
“We’re both riverside university cities, surrounded by mountains, with an outdoorsy culture but economically, we’re also hubs Missoula is a distribution centre, just like Palmerston North and it’s been really helpful to see the successes you’ve had here ”
She said the cities also share common challenges, including housing affordability, supporting people facing economic hardship and responding to climate change
“This kind of sub-national diplomacy really matters,” Mayor Davis said “We can exchange ideas, policy approaches and experiences that help strengthen our communities And it’s powerful to know we have friends on the other side of the world, working alongside us in spirit and partnership ”
During their stay, delegation members were hosted by local families adding a personal dimension to the visit Mayor Davis said this was the first time a sitting Missoula mayor has visited Palmerston North and described the experience as deeply meaningful
“Our time here has been
superb, just superb,” she said “We’ve received such warmth and hospitality, and I’ve learned so much already My homestay with your Deputy Mayor has been wonderful, I really feel like part of the family”
Palmerston North and Missoula have been sister cities since 1982, a relationship that began with academic exchanges between Massey University and the University of Montana Over the years, the partnership has grown to include cultural exchanges, trade visits, indigenous connections and shared student programmes
Palmerston North City Mayor Grant Smith says the visit was a great opportunity to show Missoula’s mayor and the rest of the group what makes our city unique
“It’s been really special to welcome our friends here and share the best of Palmy, from our lively city centre to standout spots across the wider region We’ve showcased Te Utanganui, our fast-growing logistics and distribution hub, and highlighted the innovative, future-focused industries that proudly call Palmy home
“We were also able to share a true taste of Kiwi hospitality, exploring the NZ Rugby Museum, wandering through the Feilding Farmers’ Market, and gathering for a true Kiwi barbeque at Caccia Birch House Those moments of connection matter just as much as the meetings ”
He says the trip also included discussions with local leaders and community members about business technology tourism and ways to keep our cities great places to live, work, and visit
“In many ways, our cities are very similar It’s inspiring to see how closely our priorities align

and how much we all care about our communities Spending time with our friends from Missoula has shown the value and warmth of our long-standing connection and has strengthened our ties for the future ”
The delegation included representatives from Downtown Missoula Partnership, which represents and supports local businesses; Destination Missoula, the city’s tourism promotion agency; the University of Montana’s Native American Centre; and Arts Missoula
Their visit was funded through a Public Diplomacy Grant awarded
by the U S Embassy to Palmerston North City Council, enabling the visitors to gain a deeper understanding of our city, while exploring new opportunities for economic collaboration, particularly in the tourism sector
The trip concluded on Sunday with a community ceremony at Missoula Reserve, which has recently been upgraded with new children’s play equipment and refreshed landscaping The event also featured the unveiling of a carved bench to commemorate the visit and long held friendship between the cities

Anewly completed road in Feilding has been officially named Bernie Way, recognizing the decades of dedication and impact made by local builder Bruce Hill
The name was officially approved after a heartfelt nomination by his son, Glen Hill, who recognized his father’s lifelong dedication not just to construction, but to building something even more enduring: a legacy of integrity, hard work, and fairness.
For 60 years, Bruce Hill played a pivotal role in the growth and transformation of Feilding through his work as a builder: first building with Stu Hogan and Ray Kitchen before starting his own company, Hill Construction.
the easiest thing. I’m incredibly proud that future generations will drive down a road named in his honour”
The nickname Bernie dates back to Bruce’s time as a student at Manchester Street School by a teacher who thought each child needed a nickname A nickname that then carried Bruce through school, rugby with the Feilding Yellows, and his career as a builder

Primarily residential, his work is etched into the rural landscape of the district, but it’s the way he did businesswith honest morals, a tireless work ethic, and a deep respect for his customers - that truly set him apart.
“My father always believed that the strongest foundation isn’t just concrete, it’s character,” said Glen Hill. “He built his company on doing the right thing, even when it wasn’t
Although Bernie passed away in July last year, he was aware of the upcoming honour and knew where “his street” would be located within the latest Port Street East development, part of the Kāinga Ora project. When completed, Bernie Way will be home to 15 houses in part of the wide 20 home development.
“This isn’t just a street sign. It’s a thank-you from our community to someone who helped shape our rural and residential areas”, Mayor Michael Ford explains. It’s fitting that Bruce’s nickname becomes part of the Feilding map ”
With the development nearing completion, the street sign will be hung shortly An appropriate recognition to Bruce’s forwardthinking approach that defined his success over the years.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Ashhurst, fibre artist Natasha Christensen has created a sanctuary where traditional weaving meets the quiet beauty of everyday life A Manawatū-based weaver, Natasha works exclusively with natural yarns, hand-dyeing in colours inspired by the rich native plant life of Aotearoa From earthy harakeke tones to the bright yellows of kōwhai
flowers, her colour choices reflect the landscapes that surround her Natasha’s weaving balances artistry and everyday usefulness
Nitschke MBE, who guided and encouraged Natasha until her passing earlier this year
Natasha’s studio is a bright and spacious workshop on her family’s farm She shares it with her father, rural artist Graham Christensen, creating a vibrant hub of creativity
Natasha’s weaving balances artistry and everyday usefulness.
Her signature handwoven wool and mohair throw blankets are equally at home on a gallery wall as they are thrown over the arm of a chair, bringing colour to a room and ready to be wrapped around shoulders on a cool evening This philosophy of beauty through usefulness was shaped by her mentor the celebrated Feilding master-weaver Esther
She opens the studio to the public on the first Sunday of each month 10am – 4pm for Slow Sundays in the Studio You can join Natasha in the studio to view her latest work, watch weaving demonstrations and even have a go at weaving by making a colourful mug rug to take home for free
Find the studio at 84 Glenburn Road, Ashhurst follow the road up the hill to the very end and look for the orange flag
From May Natasha will be teaching a series of Beginners Weaving Workshops See the website for more information: www slowwoven co nz

When the Regent on Broadway went dark, its interior went light
For the last month the interior of the theatre has been lit while staff carried out essential maintenance in preparation for a busy season ahead When a theatre is “dark” it means it’s closed for cleaning, repairs and upgrading The Regent on Broadway has used its quiet period over January to carry out essential work
A major project has been removing the existing plaster on the upstairs wall caused by water damage over a period of time The Palmerston North City Council engaged Programmed Property Services to pare back the plaster from the wall, reinstate it and paint over the surface with the original colour
Scaffolding was erected for safety and ease of access and painters, Te Arahu Gilsenan and Keith Warner, started work immediately after the Jimmy Carr concerts in mid-January, completing the restoration this week
“The work on the upstairs right wall is essential maintenance and adds to the aesthetic value of the 96-year-old building,” General Manager, David Walsh said “Prior to the restoration the roof and guttering had been repaired to ensure the wall was watertight so there’d be no further water damage ”
Some other essential work over January has included painting the stage, vacuuming the curtains using a fireman’s hoist and lowering the chandeliers to check and clean them
“While we’ve preparing the theatre for another busy season, maintenance is an ongoing commitment in a building that will celebrate its centenary in 2030,” Walsh said

Fifty years ago. First of all, how did that even happen? There we were in a much simpler time, when long hot summers were the norm and our love of rugby was as strong as ever, if somewhat tested by the All Blacks three month tour of South Africa
I’m picking Audrey Green would have been spinning the incomparable More than a Feeling by Boston on 2ZA, Coke would have the PNBHS 1st XV ticking along, the tree-lined Fitzherbert Avenue as resplendent as ever Ice Cream at the Blue Moon Dairy before hitting the Esplanade
And then there was the Ranfurly Shield. 1976 would draw a line in the sand as Manawatu Rugby took the step into provincial powerhouse status. With a few of
our key men away with the All Blacks, as was the case with Auckland we were perfectly capable of claiming the old log of wood. But that had been the plan many times before In the end a wobbly old drop goal by the late Doug Rollerson would give Manawatu the win and with it three years of Shield glory
The two photographs that accompany this article tell a thousand words The Manawatu team were special. Names like Donaldson, Callesen, Old, Loveday and Knight all featuring in the on-field action All past or soon to be All Blacks. The second pic, from later that night captures the moment of ultimate team pride as Perry Harris is lifted aloft by his team-mates. Coach Graham Hamer smile says it all as he has just informed Harris he is off the South Africa to join the All Blacks. 1976, you’re 50 years ago, but getting better with age!
