Supporting Palmerston North through summer and beyond

Happy New Year I hope you all had a safe and relaxing Christmas and summer break. It’s great to see the city really busy again as people get back into routines and start planning the year ahead.

With the warmer weather the Manawatū River shared pathway and Victoria Esplanade are busy too, with people getting outdoors and enjoying these spaces together If you or someone you know needs a bit of extra help getting around, remember you can hire mobility scooters from the Lido Aquatic Centre Scooters are available from 8am to 7pm in summer, on any day the Lido is open You can book them for up to four hours at a time by contacting the Lido team The hire is by donationone small way we are trying to make it easier for everyone to enjoy our shared spaces

If you’re heading to the Esplanade check out the restored Peter Black Conservatory at the Victoria Esplanade The 84-year-old facility

has a new shaded entranceway, making getting in easier and more welcoming, and inside you’ll find something extra special: Palmerston North’s first public Bonsai display

We are also now in our summer water use period, which runs through to April This is a voluntary approach to reduce demand so that we can avoid or delay the need for formal restrictions later (which we have for 5 years!) Our request is simple Please only use water outside between 7pm and 9pm every second day Small changes like this, made by many households, can make a real difference to our city’s water supply

that any groups can share, and flexible workspaces where local organisations can hold drop-in sessions It will be a much-improved base for community activities and a real asset for the wider city Hiring our community centres is very affordable, so check them out for your next celebration

Have you had a chance to read our Palmy Proud magazine yet? If you’ve been in the city centre over the past couple of months you’ll have seen work is progressing on the historic Post Office building as it is transformed into a new 4 5 star, five storey TRYP by Wyndham hotels

Feilding’s much-loved town clock is well on its way through a careful and highly specialised restoration, as it enters the final adjustment phase of a project designed to protect one of district’s heritage landmarks

Housed in the clocktower in Manchester Square, the clock’s original mechanical movement is a rare example of traditional 1900’s craftsmanship, the kind of mechanism that is now understood and maintained by only a handful of specialists worldwide

Manawatū District Council has been fortunate to work with Pilbrows Watchmakers of Taupō whose expertise in historic clock mechanisms is unmatched in New Zealand Their skills are in high demand, with a long line of heritage awaiting their care Having Pilbrows involved in Feilding’s restoration is a testament to the clock’s historical significance and the value placed on getting the work done properly

So far, the project has included:

• Restoration of the original mechanical movement

• Replacement of damaged clockface glass

• Refurbishment and repowdercoating of the steel clockface frames

With the major mechanical work now complete, the clock has entered a planned period of testing and fine-tuning

This is a normal and necessary stage when bringing a historic mechanical system back to life

Because the clock frame could not be removed from the tower during dismantling, Pilbrows were unable to carry out extended workshop testing

Instead, adjustments are now being made on site This means the community may notice the clock stopping and starting at times not because something has gone wrong, but because the mechanism is being carefully calibrated to ensure long-term accuracy and reliability

This adjustment phase is expected to take four to six weeks, allowing time for precision testing, travel from Taupō, and Pilbrows’ existing specialist workload Pilbrows are scheduled to return early next week to continue this work and will advise Council once the clock is running efficiently and as intended

Council appreciates the community’s patience during this final stage Restoring a historic clock is not a quick fix It is a process that respects the craftsmanship of the past while ensuring the clock can keep time well into the future

Summer the time to prepare for emergencies

Kiwis love a bit of DIY over the summer months –building a deck, sorting out the garden, or odd jobs at the bach.

Summer is also the perfect time to take that can-do attitude and apply it to preparing for emergencies. There’s no better time than now to get ready

Start by creating or updating your household emergency plan. Sit down with your whānau to discuss what you’ll do in different emergency scenarios, where you’ll meet if separated, and who your out-of-town contact person will be Make sure everyone knows how to turn off utilities like water, gas and electricity at the mains.

Next, check your emergency supplies. Every household should have enough food, water and supplies to last at least three days Stock your getaway bags with essentials like a torch, batterypowered radio, first aid kit, important documents, and any medications your whānau needs.

Don’t forget about your pets when planning

Take advantage of the good weather to prepare your property too Clear your gutters, secure outdoor furniture and trampolines, trim overhanging branches, and check you know where your emergency supplies are stored. If you can, install a rainwater collection system. You should also check your gas bottle to make sure it’s full once BBQ season has ended.

While a DIY (do it yourself) is great, emergencies are all about DIT – do it together Talk to your neighbours, especially those who may need more support, about what their plans are If we all work together, we can get through and recover from emergencies better

Being prepared gives you peace of mind and helps our whole community respond better when emergencies strike You can find more information about getting ready on the new Manawatū-Whanganui Emergency Management website: mwcdem.govt.nz.

He served more than six years as Chief Executive of Vegetables New Zealand, leading national advocacy and working closely with ministers, senior officials, and Economic Development Agencies across multiple regions. Antony also brings international experience from Australia and the United States, as well as practical commercial insight through his role as a fourthgeneration horticulture business leader

Colin McFadzean brings more than four decades of experience in export, manufacturing, and product commercialisation, with a strong focus on innovation and international markets. A longstanding Manawatū business owner, Colin offers deep regional knowledge alongside global expertise in logistics, distribution, and agricultural product development

Colin’s governance experience includes roles as a public company director, a board member of the Manawatū Rugby Union, a former Manawatū District councillor, and most recently as external chair of Manawatū District Council’s Water Services Unit

The CEDA Board now comprises Bobbie O’Fee (Chair), Margy Maré, David Norman, Katie Brosnahan, Antony Heywood, and Colin McFadzean.

Together, the appointments strengthen the Board’s mix of governance, commercial, and sector expertise to support businesses, partnerships, and economic development across the Manawatū and Palmerston North region.

The appointments took effect 1 January 2026.

PN CITY LIBRARY

Welcome to 2026 – the year of everybody using the library even more than before! This could be the year for you to: use a CNC router or sewing machine in Blueprint, the City Library Makerspace; read a book from every genre area; find out how to access e-audiobooks and plan a drive that’s just long enough to listen to the next book on your TBR list (let us know where you end up!); visit

every library location so you can recommend a library to people in any part of town; investigate your ancestry in the Heritage area; and after all of that, chill out in a comfy chair overlooking Te Marae o Hine

Over Summer, maybe it’s time to learn a new language with Mango Languages, an app that’s free to use with your library card. It has more than 70 languages available, from French to Japanese to Tagalog. Sections

guide you through vocabulary and pronunciation for all kinds of situations In addition to this, at Central Library there’s Kōrero Kawhe, a nice relaxed drop-in session where you can practice and polish your reo Māori, whatever level you’re at. Kōrero Kawhe is held every Wednesday in the Oroua Room on ground Floor Give yourself the gift of becoming a polyglot this year!

If you’re relaxing somewhere and can’t make it in to the library as long as you have an internet connection, you can still browse through the massive collection of movies at Kanopy, Beamafilm, or Hoopla You’ll find ebooks and e-audiobooks at BorrowBox or Libby Comics Plus has a huge range of – you guessed it – comics. There are all sorts of digital delights awaiting you, so you don’t have to panic if you run out of physical books

On the other hand, if you’re thinking about going old-school with your media, there is now a portable DVD player you can borrow, as well as a few portable turntables. Sometimes there are things you just can’t find in streaming-land, and it’s great to be able to still see that movie or listen to that album, even if you don’t have a player yourself Most

of these players are at Central Library, but you can place a hold and have one sent to whichever location is best for you.

In March, the City Library hosts a Heritage Festival, with a packed programme for you to peruse It includes talks, walks, and guided tours, offering something for every interest The full programme will be posted on www citylibrary pncc.govt.nz once all the times are confirmed

Don’t tell anyone but we’re planning to run a Winter Reading programme for adults this year, like the children’s Summer Reading programme but adult-ier You’ll read books, log them online, then use your astounding stats as a flex over your friends and nemeses

Details are yet to be finalised, so please keep it under your hat for now

As we look ahead to February, there’s Lunar New Year to look forward to, as well as Festival Of Cultures. The Library usually has a presence at these events, and also has resources to help you learn more about them. The Community Languages area has books in several different languages, for example Pop in to Central Library and have a look!

Till next time, happy reading
