TheDaffodilDayStreetAppeal isn’tpossiblewithoutvolunteers, andthere’sexpectedtobeover 10,000amazingvolunteersacrossthe countrywhowilllendahandthisyear.

ThePalmerstonNorthStroke Clubhassupportedstroke survivorsandtheirfamilies formorethan30years,yetmany peoplearestillunawareofusor theservicesweprovide.Wearea non-profitcommunityorganisation offeringregularsupportprogrammes forstrokesurvivors,alongwiththeir familiesandcarers.
Astrokecanhappenwithout warning,oftenleavingpeople grievingthelossoftheirformer lifestyleandabilities.Ourpurposeis tohelpstrokesurvivorsreintegrate intothecommunitywhileproviding practicalandemotionalsupport.

Thenewfinancialyearisunderway, whichmeansthecouncilisinfull swingasanotherfullprogramme ofworkkicksoffaroundthecity.
Iwanttostartbythankingeveryone whosharedtheirviewsonthefuture oflocalgovernmentinourregion. It’sclearpeoplecaredeeplyabout PalmerstonNorth,ouridentity,and ensuringourcityhasastrongvoiceas changeisconsidered.
We’renowworkingthrough thefeedbackalongsidepossible amalgamationopportunitiesidentified throughdiscussionswithneighbouring councils.Thiswillbeusedtohelp shapeCouncil’sresponsetothe Government.Iwillprovideanupdate inournextcolumn.

It’salsobeenfantastictoseethe recentannouncementfromthe Governmentforaloanofupto $22.4million,throughtheRegional InfrastructureFund,tosupportthe nextphaseofdevelopmentatTe Utanganui,ourcentralNewZealand distributioncentreinthenortheast ofthecity.Thecentreishometo morethan80businesses,witha plantobringtogetherroad,rail,air andportconnectionstocreatean integratedfreightandlogisticscentre.
Theinvestmentincludes$1.9million forpre-constructionwork,including developmentofthebusinesscaseand deliveryplan,followedby$20.5million forconstruction.Thebusinesscase willdeterminewhatrailinfrastructure needstobebuiltforthefirststageof KiwiRail’sRegionalFreightHub,within thewiderTeUtanganuiprecinct.

UCOLChiefExecutiveJasmine Grovessaystheeventshighlighted theorganisation’sstrongindustry connectionsandthepractical learningexperiencesavailableon campus.

Afterspending44yearsintheworkforce, PalmerstonNorthvolunteerJanetcouldhave easilysettledintoaquietretirement.Instead, shechosetodedicatehertimetohelpingothers, andforthepast20yearsshehasbeenchanging livesthroughEnglishLanguagePartners.
Asavolunteerhometutor,Janetvisitsmigrants andformerrefugeesintheirownhomes,helping themlearnEnglishwhilebuildingtheconfidenceto navigateeverydaylifeinNewZealand.
“I’velovedeveryminuteofit,”shesays. Eachnewtutoringjourneybeginswithavisit tothelearner’shometomakesuretheyarea goodmatch.Fromthere,lessonsaretailoredto theindividual’sneeds,oftenfocusingonpractical, everydaysituationsthatmanyofusrarelystopto thinkabout.
“I’vehelpedonelearnerstudyforherdriver’s licencetheorytest,”Janetsays.“Sometimesit’sthe littlethingsthatmakethebiggestdifference.”

“Itookhertothelibraryandhelpedherchoose books.Wepractisedreadingtogetheruntilshewas confidentenoughtoreadtoherchildherself,”Janet recalls.“Seeinghowexcitedandproudshewas,is somethingI’llneverforget.”
AnotherlearnerfromAfghanistancouldspeak Englishconfidentlybutcouldn’twriteit,soJanet workedalongsidehertobuildherliteracyskills.
Sometimeslearningextendsbeyondwords.Janet hasaccompaniedlearnerstothesupermarket, explainingunfamiliarfoodsandingredientsand howtheyareusedineverydaycooking.

ThisAugustmarksasignificantmilestone forWatsonIntegrityasthelocallyowned businesscelebrates30yearsinrealestateand propertymanagement.
Behindthosethreedecadesisverymuchafamily story.IsatdownwithfounderKenWatsonandhis sonsMarcusandGregtolookbackatwhereitall began,howdramaticallythepropertyindustryhas changed,andwhat30yearsinbusinessmeansto them.
ForKen,thestoryactuallybeganbeforeWatson Integrity.AfterestablishingWatsonWilsonReal Estatein1991,heexitedthe businessin1995andspent eightmonthssellingreal estateinNelson.

Greginitiallyhelpedwithfrontofhouse administration,whileMarcusbeganasa salesperson,acareerhewouldcontinuefor30 yearsbeforebecomingCEOtwoandahalfyears ago.

Propertymanagementwasnotinitiallypartofthe business.Itgrewfromexisting salesclientsaskingWatson tolookafterinvestment propertiesorhomeswhen theymovedaway. Whatbegangradually wouldeventuallybecome amajorpartofWatson Integrity,witharound700 homesnowmanagedin Manawatūalone.
ForGreg,whowentontospecialiseinproperty management,theindustrytodayisalmost unrecognisablefromthoseearlyyears.
“Propertymanagementbackthenwasvery manual-paperfiles,photographsdevelopedand stuckontowindowdisplays,newpaperadvertising includedsendinginphysicalphotoseveryweek. Therewerenoonlinelistings,andeverythingdone face-to-face.”
Technologyhassincetransformedvirtuallyevery partoftheprocess.
Kenstillremembersonemomentthat demonstratedjusthowpowerfulthatchange couldbe.AfterWatsonbeganusingMatterport3D

Whiletechnologyhaschanged,allthreebelieve thefundamentalsbehindthebusinesshavenot.
ForGreg,thatcomesbacktosomethinghe learntthroughwatchinghisfather.

ForKen,who“retired”in2022butremains apartownerandactiveboardmember,one achievementstandsalongsidethegrowthofthe company.

Irecentlyenjoyedattending theopeningofPasifikaFusionin PalmerstonNorth,wherefantastic performances,art,talent,andso muchmorewereondisplay.Ihave hadalongassociationwiththis localeventwhichcontinuestobea greatopportunityforustocelebrate pacificcultureasaregion.
Therewassomeoutstanding badmintononshowattheNZJunior BadmintonTeamChampsinPalmy duringtheschoolholidays,andI wasprivilegedtopresentawardsto someofthetopplayers.Ourlocation continuestobeagreatchoicefor schoolsportingcompetitionsandI willcontinuetosupportthesewhere Ican.
MPbraggingrightswereonthe linewhenthePropertyBrokersJets tookontheNelsonGiantsrecently. NelsonMPRachelBoyackandIwere
theretosupportourlocalteams,and itwasgreattoseetheManawatū Jetscomeawaywiththewin-a fantasticgame!
Engagingwithourcommunity isoneoftherealhighlightsofmy role,anditisalwaysvaluableto heardirectlyfromlocalsabout whatmattersmosttothem.Itwas nosurprisethatthecostofliving wasthemaintopicraisedduring conversationsoncampusatMassey ClubsDay,withmanypeoplefeeling thatpressureatthemoment.
IwasabletoattendthePalmerston NorthHomeandLifestyleExpo wherehealthwasfrontofmindfor many,whichreflectsthefactthat healthhasbeenthetopissuemy officehasbeencontactedabout overthepastyear.Iamveryaware ofthechallengesourcommunityis facinginthehealthspace,andIwill continueengagingwithMidCentral andadvocatingforimprovements.I haveconsistentlysaidweneedour manyissuessorted,andtheyneedto besortednow.
Recently,Iwaspleasedtosupport aPalmerstonNorthconstituent whospokeabouttheGovernment’s DisabilitySupportServicesBillat theSocialServicesandCommunity SelectCommittee.
Numerousconstituentshave sharedtheirconcernswithmeabout thisBill,anditiscleartheproposed changeswouldseverelyaffect peopleinourdisabilitycommunity andtheirfamilies.
Labourwillrepealthe Government’sDisabilitySupport ServicesBillandreplaceitwith legislationdevelopedalongside disabledpeoplethatprotectstheir
rights,independence,andchoice. Itisalsodisappointingthatthe Governmenthasmadechangesto rulesaroundtheenrolmentperiod forvotinginthisyear’sgeneral electionon7November,which meansthosewantingtovotewill needtobeenrolledbeforeelection day.Enrollingonelectiondaywill notbeanoption.

Mostofusexperiencedan earlier-than-expected Saturdaywake-upcallin Julythankstotheearthquakenear Taumarunui.Youmayhavenoticed somepeople’sphonesbuzzedwith awarningbeforeorduringthe shaking,whileothersgotnothing.
Thealertsomepeoplereceived didn’tcomefromus,anational agency,orGeoNet.Itcomefrom Google.MostAndroidphones haveabuilt-inaccelerometerthat candetectvibration.Ifaphone sensesmovementresemblingan earthquake,itsendsasignalto Google’sservers,whichcross-check nearbyphonestoconfirmit’sareal quakeinsteadofsomeonedropping theirphone.
Dependingontheshaking’s strength,you’llgetoneoftwo alerts.“BeAware”isthelower-level warninganddoesn’toverrideDoNot Disturb.“TakeAction”isforstronger shakinganddoesoverrideit.
