Butthat’sjustthebeginningofaneventthatlures localsandvisitorsalikewithlineupofsumptuous eventsrangingfromsilentmoviesatthemuseum tohomesteadtours,culinaryadventures,farm walksandadventures,anhistorical150thJubileefor thetownofOngaonga,Waipawa’siconicDuckDay withitsduckraces,andevenahalfmarathonfor thosefeelingfitandfabulous.
CentralHawke’sBayDistrictCouncil’slaunching anewfundtoempowersmall,tangible community-ledprojectsthankstoexternal funding.
TheCommunityPartnershipActivationFund(CPA) isbackedbytheGovernment’s‘BetterOffFunding’ andoffersa$150,000fundingpool.Applicationsare nowopen.
Theaimofthefundistobringtolifeprojects identifiedinexistingcommunityplans,developed collaborativelybyTakapau,Ongaonga,Tikokino,and thenewlyadoptedŌtānePlan.Communitygroupsor
manawhenuawithoutaformalplancanalsoapply, providedtheirprojectsalignwiththefund’scriteria; supportingwellbeing,connection,andplace-making. WithlimitedCouncilfundingavailableoutsideof rates,thisisanopportunityforcommunitytobring theirideastolife.tolife.
Grantsofupto$20,000willbeprioritised,withlarger projectsrequiringadditionalconsideration.Eligible initiativescouldinclude:

InJuly,147Year7and8studentsfrom eightprimaryschoolsinCentral Hawke’sBay–alongwithaHome EducatorsGroup–cametogetherfor adayoffunchallenges,teamwork, andinspirationaspartoftheWilliam PikeChallenge.
HeldinWaipukurau,theeventwas hostedbytheCHBWilliamPike ChallengeTrustandfeatureda specialappearancebyWilliamPike–adventurer,author,andfounderofthe nationwideprogrammethatbearshis name.
TheWilliamPikeChallengegivesYear 7and8studentsthechancetobuild resilience,leadership,andalovefor theoutdoorsbytakingpartinthree components:20hoursofcommunity service,20hoursdedicatedtoa personalpassionproject,andfive outdooractivities.
Whiletheprogrammeisdelivered nationwide,CentralHawke’sBay isuniqueinhavingitsowntrustto supportstudents.TheCHBWilliam PikeChallengeTrustwasestablished in2022byMarianCampbell,whowas inspiredwhilewalkingthelengthof NewZealand,tohelpmakeoutdoor adventuresaccessibletoeverychildin CentralHawke’sBay.Sincethen,more than450localstudentshavetaken part.
Attheannualevent,studentswere splitintomixed-schoolteamsand rotatedthroughtenoutdooractivities
designedtopushboundaries,build confidence,andsparknewfriendships. FourteenstudentsfromCentral Hawke’sBayCollege,manyofthem formerchallengeparticipants,helped runthedayaspartoftheirDuke ofEdinburgh’sAward.“Itwasreally specialtoseethesecollegestudents givingback,”saidMarianCampbell. “Manywereinspiredbytheirown
WilliamPikeChallengeexperienceto takeontheDukeofEdandnowthey’re passingthatinspirationontothenext group.”
Ahighlightofthedaywasa presentationbyWilliamPike,who sharedhisextraordinarystoryof survivalanddetermination.Afterlosing hislowerrightleginthe2007eruption ofMtRuapehu,Williamsethimself
thegoalofreturningtoclimbthe mountainthatnearlytookhislife. Reflectingontheevent,Williamsaid, “It’sfantastictoseetheChallenge madesoaccessibletoyoungpeople inCentralHawke’sBay.WhatMarian andtheCHBWilliamPikeChallenge Trustaredoinghereisreallyspecial.” Severallocalstudentsalsotooktothe stagetosharewhattheyareworking ontocompletetheirChallenge.Their storiesincludedvolunteeringata rugbyclub,helpingatafoodbank,and doingenvironmentalworksuchastrap settingandon-farmweeding.Passion projectsrangedfromfencingand buildingtoinvestigationsintowooland sportslikenetballandrugby.
Thestudentsenjoyedawell-earned BBQlunch–madepossiblethanks totheWaipukurauRotaryClub,who generouslyfundedtheevent–before wrappingupwithafunswimmingrace betweenWilliamandagroupoflocal students.

LeadforCentralHawke’sBayDistrictCouncil AlannaCutbushhasaninterestingjob thatincludesorganisingtheReadingtoDogs programmeatWaipawaLibrary.
ReadingtoDogs(orcaninetherapysessions)allows childrentopracticereadingaloudinarelaxedand supportiveenvironment.Theprogramaimstohelp childrenimprovetheirliteracy,buildconfidence,and fosteraloveofreading.Thedogsparticipatingin theprogramarecarefullyselectedandassessedfor theirtemperamentandsuitabilityaroundchildren.
Readingtodogshasbeenshowntoboostselfesteemandmotivation,especiallyforchildrenwho maystrugglewithtraditionalclassroomsettings. Thedogsprovideacomfortingaudience,allowing childrentofocusonthejoyofstorytellingratherthan thepressureofperformance.Astheyread,children oftenbecomemoreexpressiveandenthusiastic, whichfurtherenhancestheircomprehensionand verbalskills.
CanineTherapySessionsareheldduringtermtimes onWednesdaysafterschoolfrom3.30-4.30pm.Each sessionlastsabout20minutesandcurrentlythere aretwochildrenparticipating,Alannasays. ThedogsaresuppliedthroughtheCHBbranch ofCanineFriendsPetTherapy.ChrisPartridge istheCHBLiaisonOfficerwhoworksalongside ownersofcalm,cuddlydogstosupplytherapy dogs,notonlytothereadingprogramme,but alsotovisitresthomes.Thedogsandownersare thoroughlyassessedtoensuretheyhavetheright temperamenttobeatherapydog.Chrisiskeento hearfromdogownersinCHBwhofeeltheirdoghas theattributestobecomeapettherapydogasthere isquitesomedemandfortheirservices.
CanineFriendsPetTherapy,acharitythatrelies onvolunteers,wasfounded35yearsagobyEileen Curry,arespectedLowerHuttdogbreeder.She
witnessedanelderlypersonverydistraughtat havingtoleaveherdogwhenshewentintocare. Eileentookherdogtovisitthewomanandfromthat CanineFriendsPetTherapywasfounded.Today thereareapproximately800dogsthroughoutNew Zealandvisitingtheelderly,thedisabledorlistening tochildrenreading.
UntilrecentlySophiethedogwasthelisteneratthe library,itwasherownerJoChubbwhoinstigated thereadingsessionsatthelibrary.Sophiewas

TheCancerSocietyofNewZealand,Hawke’sBay Centre,isthrilledtoannouncetheadditionofanearly newhybridvehicletosupportcancerpatientsin CentralHBandthewiderarea.Thisachievementwasled bytheFreemasonsofLodgeHaeata272,withsupportfrom Centralines,theLionsClubofWaipawaandHawke’sBay Toyota.
FundswereraisedthroughaFreemasons-initiatedquiz andcharityauctionnight,heldonFriday30Mayat theHavelockNorthFunctionCentre,whichgenerously providedthevenuefreeofcharge.WhiletheFreemasons providedtheleadershipandamajorportionofthe funding,theprojectwasmadepossiblethroughthevital contributionsofCentralines,theLionsClubs,andspecial pricingandsupportfromHawke’sBayToyota. Ormondvillestationisrestoredasitwasinthe 1950sinthepeakofitsprosperity.
Ormondvillewasonceathrivingtownship withabusyrailwaystationthat,inadditionto passengers,transportedcattleandsheepandat itspeak120,000sheepayearwereloadedand transported.
Thestationwasopenedin1880withlateradditions in1902.ItisastandardFifthClassStationand wasthesameas240otherserectedaroundNew Zealand.Thestationwasahiveofactivitywitha postofficeandatelephoneexchange.Couples couldevengetmarriedatthestation!
PresidentoftheOrmondvilleRailPreservation GroupPaulMahoneysaysthattheoriginsofthe societygobackto1986whenthegoodsshedwas closed,andtenderswerecalledforitsremoval. Railwayswerebeingclosedalloverthecountry, hesays.Thankstoadedicatedbunchoflocals, railwayenthusiastsincludingMahoneyandthe DistrictCouncil,theshedwassavedandthegroup thenembarkedonamajorrenovationproject.
Sincethen,thestationhasreceivedsixawardsand hasacategorytwolistingwiththeNewZealand HistoricalPlacesTrust.Itisthebest-preserved railwaystationinNewZealandwhichissomething themembersareveryproudof.
WairarapaMPWyattCreechopenedtherestored stationonNovember30,1997.Thecrowdwas estimatedtobeatleast350.Ithadbeenrepiled, reroofed,repaintedandhaditschimneyrebuilt anditsplatformresealed.

Thegroupdoesneedmorevolunteersespecially tohelpwithfinanceandadministrationand gardeningasmostvolunteerschoosetoworkon restorationprojects.WorkingBeesareheldonthe secondSaturdayofeachmonth.
Theirmainsourceofincomehasbeenrevenue fromtheB&Bthat’shousedinthestationbuilding andhasbeenrenovatedin1950sstyle.Mahoney saystheincomeissufficienttokeeptheplace uptoscratchandmakesomeimprovements. ThedecisiontoturnthemainbuildingintoaB&B wasmadebecausemembersthoughtthatthe areadidn’tneedanothermuseumastherewas asuccessfuloneatNorsewood,4kmaway.They ultimatelydecidedtocreatea1950s-character B&Bwithakitchen,bathroomandbedroomsand loungeandletitoutforexclusiveuse.
Theformertelephoneexchangeisnowthekitchen, andabathroomhasreplacedalargewalk-in safe.Theformerwomen’swaitingroomandparcel
roomarebothbedrooms.Betweensixandeight peoplecanbecomfortablyaccommodatedas there’stwodoublebedsandfoursinglebeds. Thestationsmainofficeisdecoratedwithgenuine stationparaphernaliaandservesasaloungeand diningareawithdistinctivecharacter.Uptosix trainspassduringthedaywhichisahighlightfor manyvisitors.

Thescholarshiphasbeenoffered byBPWCHBforoverthirtyyears.It originatedwhenBPWCHBsawa
needtoassistwomenwhomayhave notundertakentertiaryeducation aftertheyfinishedschoolastheyhad focussedonraisingchildreninstead. Atthetime,intheearlytomid90s,womenwhoreceivedthe DomesticPurposesBenefitwere assistedbyMSDtoundertaketertiary education,butwomenwhowerein arelationshipdidnotreceiveany
assistance.Thismeantwomenwho wantedtoreturntoeducationafter havingchildrenbutwhosepartners hadalow-incomejobfoundit difficulttoaffordtoundertaketertiary education.
Todaytheyareproudtoassist anyCHBwomanover25,whether theyhavehadchildrenornot,and regardlessoftheirrelationshipstatus,

withthecostsoftertiaryeducation byofferingthesescholarships.They needtobelivinginCHB,studyingor soontobestudying.

RegionalCouncilSeniorProjectManagerThomasPetriesaysthatwheelruts andothersurfacedamagecanhavelong-termdetrimentaleffects.“Weneed toprotecttheintegrityandstabilityofthesestopbanks.Theupgradeprojectis amajorinvestmentfortheWaipawacommunity,givingthetowngreaterflood resilience.Weappreciatetherolethecommunityplaysinhelpinglookafter thesevitalstopbanks-whetherit’sstayingoffrestrictedareasorreporting damage.”

Overthepasttwoyears,Ruahinehaswelcomed numerousfosterswhoprovideessentialcarefor kittens,puppies,anddogs,oftenincriticalstages oftheirlives.Thesefosterfamiliesarelifelinesfor animalstooyoung,sick,oranxioustothriveina shelter.Fostercaremakesaprofounddifference: animalsreceiveindividualisedattention,love,and socialisation,helpingthemflourishandincreasing theirchancesofsuccessfuladoption.
