WinterReadingProgramme warmingup

AcrossCentralHawke’sBay1300 childrenarecurlingupwithabook thiswinter,withtheencouragement ofCentralHawke’sBayDistrictLibraries. Childrenfromacrossthedistrictare takingpartintheLibraries’WinterReading Programmethroughtheirschoolclasses, challengingthemselvestoreadsixbooks beforetheendofterm.

Theendgoalistoreceiveafreebook sponsoredbytheCentralHawke’sBay DistrictLibraries-FriendsoftheLibrary. Theirvolunteerswillbeoutinforce throughoutthemonthofJunevisiting schools,signingofftheirreaders’books andtalkingtothemabouthowthey haveenjoyedtheirwinterreadingso far.Parentsareencouragedtocheckin withtheirchildren’sreadingprogramme progressaswell.

Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor and Council hosts district’s largest citizenship ceremony

This year’s citizenship ceremony held on 4 June in Central Hawke’s Bay was the largest ever, with 30 new citizens sworn in, in a ceremony at the CHB Municipal Theatre

Central Hawke’s Bay Mayor Will Foley performed the ceremony as part of his role as Mayor All candidates have been granted New Zealand citizenship by the New Zealand Government and taking the oath or affirmation at a Citizenship Ceremony is the final stage in of becoming a New Zealand citizen

In a speech on the night, Foley said “Citizenship is about belonging, participation and helping shape the future of our communities

“As you take your oath or affirmation, you are not only gaining citizenship, but also embracing the shared values

of fairness, respect, democracy, kindness, and care for one another

“I have the real privilege of being a Kiwi Im that purely by the good fortune of being born here If I had to choose, I’d still want to be a Kiwi

“That’s why it is my honour to be a part of making this a reality for you

This ceremony confirms that you are officially whānau Haere mai”

The new Citizens have come to New Zealand from as far afield as the UK, USA, South Africa Russia, Jamaica, Samoa, Cambodia, India and Germany Their reasons for becoming a New Zealand citizen are as varied as their countries of origin

Some of the citizens sworn in have made their home in Hastings Napier and Wairoa Being able to attend

the Central Hawke’s Bay ceremony is helping with wait lists in the larger Hawke’s Bay centres

Suzanne and Michael Hendon of Takapau are two of the new citizens, having moved to New Zealand from the UK 19 years ago

“We decided we’d been here long enough to make the decision that New Zealand is our home forever,” said Suzanne

The couple moved to Hawke’s Bay from Somerset to provide a better lifestyle for their daughter, who was nine at the time

“Michael got a nursing position at Hawke’s Bay Hospital, and I stayed behind to sell the house Then I got an audiology position at Hawke’s Bay Hospital before I even moved here

“I had no idea where Hawke’s Bay Hospital was, and I was pulled over for speeding on my way there on my first day

“The Police officer asked me if I knew why Id been pulled over I had no idea I told him Id been looking at the hills and the greenery and marvelling at how beautiful it was He let me off!

“It’s special that Will Foley is conducting this ceremony, as he was one of the first people we met when we moved in As a neighbour, he came over to welcome us and say hello

“We have made the most of everything since we moved to New Zealand and we’re proud to be some of the country’s newest New Zealanders”

Aphoenix hasrisen

Everynowandthen,arescuestory comesalongthatremindsuswhy volunteersdowhattheydo.Phoenix thekittenisoneofthosestories.

OneofRuahineAnimalRescue’s dedicateddogwalkerswasexercisinga rescuedogalongtheriverwalkwaywhen shenoticedwhatappearedtobeadead kittenlyingonthepath.Somethingmade hertakeacloserlook,andthankfullyshe did.Thetinykitten’seyesmovedever soslightly.Againstallodds,shewasstill alive.

Thekitten,nownamedPhoenix,was rushedbacktotheshelterbefore beingtakenstraighttothevet.Shewas emaciated,injured,severelyhypothermic anddangerouslyclosetodeath.Infact, shewassocoldthatveterinarystaffwere unabletofindatemperatureorpulse forthefirstfourhourswhiletheyslowly workedtowarmherfragilebody.

Thatafternoon,Phoenixwenthome withoneofourvolunteers,whereshewas settledintoacratenearaheatpump andmonitoredaroundtheclock.Overthe followingdays,regularmeals,warmth, gentlecareandplentyofcuddlesslowly helpedherregainherstrength. Unfortunately,herchallengeswerefar fromover.Asaresultofthehypothermia, Phoenixdevelopedanastycoughand fluidonherlungs.Thefirstcourseof antibioticsfailedtocleartheinfection, requiringafurthertwoweeksof treatmentwithadifferentmedication.

Thankfully,Phoenixprovedtobea fighter.

Fromweighingjust800gramswhen shewasrescued,shehasnowgrownto nearlythreekilograms.Hercoughhas improvedsignificantly,andshecontinues tomakeremarkableprogresseveryday. ItisnoexaggerationtosaythatPhoenix wasrescuedfromtheverybrinkofdeath.

Despiteherdifficultstart,Phoenixhasa sweetandgentlenature.Sheremainsa littleshy,butsheabsolutelylovesbeing cuddledandcanpurrloudlyenoughto competeintheOlympics.Shestillhasa woundononehipthatisslowlyhealing, butthatcertainlydoesnotstopherfrom spendinghourschasingherfavourite ping-pongball.Accordingtoherfoster mum,herpreferredplaytimeisaround midnight!

Nowthatherhealthhasimproved, Phoenixisspendingtimeattheshelter. Shehasbeenfleatreated,wormed, vaccinatedandmicrochipped.Onceher coughhascompletelyresolved,shewillbe spayedandreadytofindaforeverhome.

Althoughshewasoriginallyawildkitten, Phoenixhasneverattemptedtobite orscratchanyone.Shesettleshappily oncepickedupandenjoysthecompany ofothercats.Withalittlepatienceand understanding,shehasallthepotential tobecomeawonderfulcompanion.

Phoenixtrulylivesuptohername.She hasrisenfromtheashesandbeengiven asecondchanceatlife.

Licensingchangesare comingin2027–here’s whatyouneedtoknow

Ifyou’replanningongettingyourlicence, therearesomeimportantchanges comingtoNewZealand’sdriverlicensing systemfromJanuary2027.

Thebiggestchange,therewillnolonger beapracticalfulllicencetest.Instead, morefocuswillbeplacedonhazard perceptionandsafedrivingskillsduring therestrictedlicencestage.

Fordriversunder25,thelearnerlicence periodwillincreasefrom6monthsto12 months.However,thereisgoodnews. Learnerdriversmaybeabletoreduce thisperiodbackto6monthsbyeither completinganapproveddrivertraining programme(CONNECTplanonbeingone oftheseproviders)orloggingatleast60 hoursofsuperviseddrivingpractice(we areassumingtheDRIVEAppwillbethe trackerofthis).Thisrecognisesthevalue ofeducationandgainingreal-world drivingexperienceandencouragesyoung peopletospendmoretimebuildingsafe drivingskills.

Therestrictedlicenceperiodwillreduce from18monthsto12months,butsafeand legaldrivingwillmattermorethanever. Underthenewsystem,receivingdemerit pointswhileonyourrestrictedlicencewill addanextrasixmonthstothetimeyou mustremainonyourrestrictedbefore progressingtoyourfulllicence.

Around15to20membersmeeteachweek inafriendly,sociablesetting,workingacross avarietyofcreativedisciplines.Thegroup providesaspacewherepeoplecaninspire, encourageandcreatealongsideoneanother. Thatsenseofcommunitywasevidentover King’sBirthdayweekendwhenthegroup heldanexhibitionandsaleshowcasingthe considerabletalentofitsmembers.The displayfeaturedart,patchwork,embroidery, mosaic,woolandfibrecrafts,alongwithplants. Ray’scolourfulpaintingswereamongthose exhibited.

CreativityhasalwaysbeenpartofRay’slife. Hebeganhiscareerasawindowdresserand displayartist,learninghowtocaptureattention throughcompositionandvisualstorytelling. Helaterturnedtopottery,withheandhiswife Lynnrunningacraftshopwherehesoldhis work.

Iwas runningto thehall… well…Iwas shuffling ina hurried fashion…I waslate, late,late foravery important date…with Alice… however asI rounded onthehall,Iheardexcitedchatterfromwithin.Theprimaryschoolshadfilledthehall, memorieswerebeingmadeandIwassogladtobehere…andontime!

LewisCarroll’sAlicestorieswerebroughttolifebyatalentedcastandcrewwho deliveredaproductionfullofhumour,energy,andimagination.Fromtheconfident performancesoftheleadcharacterstothehilarioussupportingroles,everystudent contributedtomakingWonderlandaplacetheaudiencewantedtovisit.

Thespectacularset,creativecostumes,impressivemakeup,andseamlesswork ofthebackstageteamallhelpedcreateatrulymemorableexperience.Itwas clearthatcountlesshoursofdedication,teamwork,andtalenthadgoneintothe production.

Thankyoutoeveryoneinvolved,aheartfeltthankyoutothefamiliessupportingtheir talentedteensalsotoourcommunitytheatreswhoaresogenerousintheirsupport ofourstudents.ManylifechangingopportunitiesweregivenbutthebiggestmihiI reserveforMrChrisScanlan,MrLomiSchaumkel,MrsKathKeirandthestudentsfor allthetalent,forthegenerosity,forthelatenights,fortheirdedicationandforthis show.Iknowthesestudentswilltakethesememorieswiththem,memoriesfora lifetime.Notabadoutcome!

PinkRibbonStaffBreakfast

MrsAshleighHarrisorganisedthehostingofaPinkRibbonStaffBreakfast. Itwasgreatseeingallthestaffgettogethertosupportsuchaworthycause. Everyoneknowssomeonewhohasbeen,oriscurrentlyaffectedby,BreastCancerso itisaparticularlydeservingcause.Thisyearwehaveraised$661. Thankyoutohelpers,MrNeilMcKayandthePrefectsandtoMissHelenMiddleton. ThanksalsotoMrsHarris,itwasalovelystarttotheday.

Wewarmlywelcomeenrolmentsfromprospectivestudentsfor2027.
