CentralHawke’sBay’smuchlovedannualSecondHandSundayisbackfor 2026,providinglocalresidentsthe opportunitytogiveawayhousehold itemstheynolongerwantand collectitemsfromothersforfree.
Whatbeganin2004asasmall community-driveninitiativeisnow celebratingmorethantwodecades ofgrowthandsuccess.Markingits 22ndevent—atestamenttothe district’scommitmenttoreuse, resourcefulness,andkeeping valuableitemsoutoflandfill.
MayorWillFoleysaidtheevent continuestoreflectthebestofthe district’scommunityspirit.
“Second-HandSundayisasimple ideathat’shadalastingimpact. Itbringspeopletogether,reduces waste,andhelpsourcommunitylook afteritsresources.Seeingneighbours share,reuseandsupportone anotheryearafteryearissomething we’rereallyproudof.”
OnSunday15February2026,from 9amto1pm,participatinghouseholds acrossCentralHawke’sBaywill onceagainopentheirfrontberms anddriveways,offeringsurplusor unwantedgoodsforotherstotake home.Frombooks,clothingand furnituretoleftoverDIYmaterials,the eventprovidesaneasy,communitycentredwaytogiveitemsasecond life.
Second-HandSundaywas designedtoreducewaste, encouragereuse,andstrengthen neighbourhoodconnections.

Society.In1993itwasleasedtoSteamIncand towedtoPaekakarikiwhereitunderwent20years ofrestoration,returningtoservicejustaheadofthe 100thanniversaryofWWI.Ithassincetravelledall overNewZealand.
ThediesellocomotiveDa1410originatesfrom Canadain1955andwasrestoredbeforeCovid lockdown,startingservicewhenlockdownwaslifted.
Theenginespullarangeofauthentic1930s carriages,witheveryrattleandbumpbringingback theambianceofpreviousgenerations.

RussellPark,Waipukurautocelebrate RussellParkparkrun’s200thevent.
RussellParkparkrunstartedon9th April2022withanaverageof40 participants.200parkrunslater, weareregularlywelcomingalmost doublethisnumbertothefree5k
eventeverySaturdaymorningat 8am.Participantsareagedfrom4to 84,andcomewithfriends,familyand dogs.
TonyValentinewastheinaugural eventdirector,responsibleforgetting ParkruninRussellParkofftheground, afteryearsofplanning,interrupted byapandemic.Hehascontinued tocarryresponsibilityfortheevent,

RuahineAnimalRescueiscalling ontheCentralHawke’sBay communitytoopentheirhearts andhomestofourveryspecialdogs whoarecurrentlywaitingfortheir foreverfamilies.Whilepuppiesare oftenadoptedquickly,olderdogslike thesecanwaitmuchlonger,despite havingjustasmuchlove,loyalty,and companionshiptogive. AsStJoseph’sSchoolCentralHawke’sBay approachesaremarkablemilestone,the communityiswarmlyinvitedtojoinin celebratingacenturyoffaith,learning,andservice. Overtheweekendof27February–1March2026, pastandpresentstudents,families,staff,and supporterswillgathertohonour100yearssince theschoolfirstopeneditsdoors.
Foundedin1926asStJoseph’sConventSchool Waipukurau,theschoolwasestablishedbythe SistersofStJosephofNazarethtomeettheneeds ofCatholicfamiliesacrossCentralHawke’sBay. Beforethen,localCatholicchildrentravelledtoSt Columba’sinWaipawaorattendedstateschools. Whentheconventschoolopenedon1February 1926,58studentsfrom26familieswereenrolled.By year’send,therollhadgrownto73.
Theoriginalthree-roombrickbuildingwas ingeniouslydesignedtofunctionasbothschool andchurch.EveryFriday,childrenstackeddesks intocorridors,concertinadoorsweredrawnback, andthefloorspolishedforSundayMass.On Mondaymornings,theprocesswasreversedand thebuildingreturnedtoitsweekdaypurpose.
Afourthclassroomwasaddedinthemid-1960sas therollexpanded.Theschoolwelcomeditsfirstlay teacherin1972,andfollowingintegrationin1975,its firstlayprincipal.
