Y ou are God's poem. That makes you a piece of art. Art is often beautiful. More importantly, every piece of art has something of the character, vision, and values of the artist embedded within it. So it is with you. - Marc Alan Schelske

Over the years, I have become a great fan of Pacific Pencil. It is a perfect public display of how our students are developing as globally enlightened citizens who are able to bridge the gap between the East and the West. This year every elementary student will have two dedicated pages in Pacific Pencil, showcasing not only their art but also two pieces of writing in two different languages (Korean and English). Using both Korean and English, they tell wonderful stories filled with conflict, humor, empathy for others, and creativity. By learning to express themselves in Korean and English, they are developing skills and dispositions particularly important for success in the 21st century world. The cover design of this year’s Pacific Pencil also highlights another important element of bridging the gap: developing a robust cultural and personal identity. Thirty-six students participated in the cover design contest under the theme of “Who am I?” Students learned to reflect and to examine their own cultural, social, and personal identities through their artwork. An artwork from each grade level was chosen to be on this issue’s cover. As is true with every issue of Pacific Pencil, the publication involves the dedication not only of the student artists and writers but also of parents, SRC students, staff, and teachers who worked tirelessly on planning, fundraising, and editing. This year, in particular, high school art students have contributed to the Pacific Pencil publishing event by curating the exhibition, making guide maps, and running the arts and crafts booths. The whole APIS community is behind the making of each year’s Pacific Pencil. I would like to congratulate Pacific Pencil again for a great publication that celebrates our mission and vision. My heartfelt thanks goes to all who have made this issue possible.

Dear Friends of APIS “The X Factor.” It is a term we use to describe something that has a “special” quality about it, a quality that cannot be described, is maybe magical or out of this world or is something that takes your breath away. In a quick internet search for the phrase, I found more than 58 million results mentioning “the X Factor”; from people with it singing and dancing, to cars, movies and holiday destinations that didn’t have it. And as I browsed the sites and watched some of the videos, it occurred to me that I agreed with some and disagreed with others. There certainly were some singers that took my breath away, X Factor all over them, but for others I didn’t think it was there. The “X Factor” was something personal to me, and it was obviously different from what others thought. So what is the X Factor at APIS? If I were to answer then you might not agree with me, as I may not agree with you if you were to describe your X Factor. But here is something I think we might all agree on. The pages of this volume of writing and art are excellent examples of exemplary students extending themselves to explore and describe their experiences through word and art. You will find your “X Factor” somewhere within this volume, and when you do, please try to find the author or artist and share your excitement with them. Bruce Knox Principal

"I am that I am.” God mentioned this in Exodus Chapter 3 Verse 14 as if to unveil the true meaning of human dignity that identity exists only within oneself as a unique existence. Every individual is gifted with importance and talent. Luckily, students at APIS further advance their gifts from God, expressing their unique identities in diverse mediums such as art, English, and Korean. Hence, the sixth Pacific Pencil, which incorporates very special and unique works carries enormous significance. Students carefully undergo the stage of ascertaining a sense of identity and the means of expressing their presence to others. As I recall watching these young individuals expressing themselves in different languages, I am not only exhilarated but also awed: blissful of this wonderful chance to spend time with these bright students and appreciative of my own identity as a teacher. I am also sure that Korean teachers who lead our students at APIS with love and devote their lives in fostering these children, Mrs. Suk Ja Kwon, Ms. Alice Chang, and Ms. Namhee Kong, have played a significant role in nurturing creativity and eloquence as shown in the sixth Pacific Pencil. I hope and am sure that the students will grow into global leaders with great selfesteem. Who am I? What kind of food do I like? What do I like to do on weekends? What cultures have I experienced? Go ahead and ask yourself these questions and you'll be surprised at how much you can learn about who you are. Here at APIS, we are very fortunate to have students from all over the world with different backgrounds and different likes and dislikes. Getting to know one's self is a meaningful starting point from which a person can begin his or her journey as a writer and an artist. In the 2015-2016 school year, APIS students have had an opportunity to unveil who they are through two powerful tools — literacy and art. In this magazine, you are invited to join each student’s journey, which is uniquely expressed through imagination and exploration into their identities. This served as an excellent canvas on which to weave the two different cultures they are in today. And with writing and drawing side by side, you can also see how much can be expressed with art, which I like to call the world language. I am very proud of all our students’ hard work and talent. Another successful year of Pacific Pencil was made possible with our dedicated elementary homeroom teachers, Korean language teachers, staff, and generous support from APIS and our parents. Special thanks goes to our principal, Bruce Knox, the Pacific Pencil committee, Judy Park, Jill Iwanuk, Soo Lee, Sarah Wood, Jeff Underhill, and Emily Kim; and to Nicole Suh for her endless work in designing the magazine. Many thanks also go to our enthusiastic parents, PTO, SRC, High School Art I students, art department, Susan Craton, Caroline Webster, Jo Shim, Andy Murphy, Julie Jung, Young Min Park, and our staff members for their help and support in organizing the Pacific Pencil publishing ceremony and art exhibition. Congratulations to all of the authors and artists that contributed to this year's Pacific Pencil literary art magazine. I have truly enjoyed watching the students grow as writers and artists over the past several years. Looking through each magazine, year after year, you can see how each student tries to push themselves to grow as an artist and author. Longitudinal research shows that people with good literacy skills are more likely to have higher self-esteem, better health, better jobs, and higher wages. They are more able to take advantage of the opportunities that life may offer them. The arts also provide people with benefits such as promoting self-esteem, motivation, aesthetic awareness, cultural exposure, creativity, improved emotional expression, as well as social harmony and appreciation of diversity. By combining these two elements together we are creating well-rounded students who are ready to take on life's challenges and strive to be the best version of themselves. The penguin and I became friends.I said to the penguin, â€œCan you talk?â€? And the penguin shook his head.

I took Penguin back to my house with ice and fish. I ate my cooked dinner and Penguin ate his fresh fish.

The penguin took me to his house. In his house, I saw an ice refrigerator and I opened the refrigerator and saw his fish. 15

1st Grade The Baby Elephant’s Lost and Found

There was a mommy elephant and a baby elephant. The baby elephant’s name was Sam. One day, the mommy elephant and Sam were playing on the playground because it was Sam’s birthday! He rode the slide and he was so happy. “Yay! It is fun!” said Sam. “It’s time to go home,” said Sally, the mommy elephant. When they were walking home, Sam saw a beautiful swan. He liked it so much, Sam walked to the right instead of walking straight. Sally kept walking straight and didn’t see Sam walking to the right. Sally said, “Come here, Sam.” Sally did not hear anything. Sam was at the apple tree area. The swan went up to the tree. Sam said, “I’m catching you!” Sally was so surprised when she looked back! Sally said aloud, “Oh! Where is my baby? Sam LOVES apple trees! I will go and find him there.” So she went. Sally saw Sam crying at the apple tree, so Sally picked him up. Sam learned that he should not go anywhere without his mom.

1st Grade Tom Steals a Toy Fredy and Tom had been friends since they were babies. One day, Tom was playing at Fredy’s house. Fredy said, “I am going out to get something.” “OK,” said Tom. Fredy went out. When Fredy went out, Tom stole his Turning Mecard. It was Spingces. Tom was cleaning up. Tom didn’t think Fredy will think that the Turning Mecard that he stole was his, so he stole it. Then Fredy asked, “What is in your pocket?” “Oh, I’m cold. I am putting my hands in my pocket. Bye Bye. See you tomorrow at my house.” said Tom. “OK,” said Fredy. And he slept. The next day Fredy went to Tom’s house. He saw his Turning Mecard and said, “This is mine!” “No,” said Tom. Then Fredy said, “Look at the back.” Tom looked at the back and saw Fredy’s name on Turning Mecard’s foot. Tom screamed and cried. He said, “Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!” Fredy said, “This time I forgive you.” “OK, OK, OK.” Tom said crying. Then Fredy played with Tom and went home. When Fredy was going home, he believed that Tom will never do a thing like this and he thought Tom learned his lesson. Tom’s lesson was never steal anything. Tom really learned his lesson that he will never steal someone’s thing and he never did.

1st Grade Cam’s Sunflowers There was a girl named Cam. She had three sunflowers. Cam had a friend named Lean. One day, Lean went to Cam’s house and saw the three sunflowers. Lean thought the Happy Flower was the best because the color was gold and beautiful! Lean wanted to steal it. She thought that when Cam was away, she would steal the flower. Lean came to Cam. “Hello, can I see your flowers?” “OK,” s ai d Cam . Le an t h o u g h t t o herself, When the night comes, I will steal the Happy Flower! Ha! Ha! Ha! She believed Lean’s flowers were the best. At night, Lean slowly went to the flowers and grabbed the Happy Flower. She tiptoed, swish swash swish swash. She grabbed and took it home! Lean put the Happy Flower in her garden. In the morning, Cam was surprised! “Wh! What! Why are there just two flowers!” She was very mad! Lean was very happy because she had the Happy Flower. Cam called Lean. “Do you have my flower?” Lean said, “No.” “Really? I am coming to your house.” Cam said. “Why?” Lean asked. “Because! I need to know you have my flower!” Cam shouted. Cam came to Lean’s house. Cam gave her dog a bone and said, “Can you smell the Happy Flower?” The dog smelled and found the Happy Flower! Cam asked Lean, “Why did you do that?” Lean said, “Because I thought that the Happy Flower would make me happy. I’m sorry.” Cam said, “It’s OK.”

Lime and Cherry were sisters. One day, Lime woke up and she was so excited! “Yay! Today is Cherry’s birthday!” She wanted to buy a strawberry cake for her sister, Cherry. Lime and Cherry went to the mall together. “I will buy something for you, Cherry. I’ll meet you at home. Bye!” said Lime. “OK. Bye!” said Cherry. Lime went to the cake store. She bought a strawberry cake for her sister. Lime was busy paying for the cake. She gave the money to the cashier. Lime came home with the cake. Lime wanted to call Cherry to see what she was doing. Lime checked her pocket and her bag. She said, “Oh no! I lost my phone!” Cherry was still at the mall. She got some money for her birthday present. Cherry went to a toy store and got a mini doll. Then Cherry went to the bakery store to buy cookies. The person at the bakery store said, “Oh! Is this your phone?” Cherry looked at it and said, “It’s my sister’s phone. Thank you!” When Cherry came home, Lime gave the cake to Cherry. “Happy birthday! But I lost my phone. I am sad.” Cherry said, “I found your phone!” Lime was surprised. Lime said, “Thank you, Cherry!” Lime put her phone in her bag. They went to bed happily.

1st Grade The Big Bad Shark- Eaty Yummy

Once upon a time, there was a Big Bad Shark. The shark was so bad, nobody liked him. He was lonely. The shark’s name was Eaty Yummy. “I love eating octopuses,” said Eaty Yummy. One day Eaty Yummy saw an octopus and he gobbled him up. He was not full and he saw a shrimp, so he gobbled the shrimp up, too. After lunch, Eaty Yummy was swimming, and he slept on Puffy’s face on purpose. Clowny said, “Don’t!” Turtle said, “Don’t do that!” Puffy was popping because she was so angry. But Eaty Yummy said, “ARRR! I don't care! I am the strongest in the whole wide world!” Eaty Yummy said, “So whatever you say, I don’t care!” One day, the fishes had a meeting at Whale’s house. Whale’s house was a dark cave. His house was so big. They were talking about Eaty Yummy. “Eaty Yummy ate my sister!” said Octopus. “Me too!” said Sea House. “Then let’s teach Eaty Yummy a lesson!” said Turtle. So they went to where Eaty Yummy was. First, Turtle tickled Eaty Yummy. Next, Whale pushed Eaty Yummy’s head. Then, Sea House bit Eaty Yummy. Finally, Jelly Fish stung Eaty Yummy! “Ouch!” said Eaty Yummy, “Stop! I will stop!” Then Eaty Yummy said, “Sorry everyone. I will stop.” Eaty Yummy learned his lesson that he will not be mean. He became a vegetarian.

Frank Li Timmy’s Moving Day Timmy is a boy who once lived in Australia. One day, Timmy had to move. Timmy wanted to stay because he liked his friends and his school. His dad said, “We need to move to Canada. OK?” “Why?” Timmy asked. “Because I need a new job, OK?” “OK.” Timmy was sad. On their way to the airport, Timmy was still sad. Timmy saw his house, and it was so tiny because it was so far away. They saw flowers and trees, but Timmy was still sad. The big moving truck was behind Timmy’s car. “I want to stay. OK, Dad?” said Timmy. “I just told you, Timmy. I need a new job, OK?” Timmy was very sad. They were almost at the airport. Timmy was still soooo sad. Mom said, “Sorry. We need to move.” “It’s OK,” said Timmy. They were at the airport. “The airport is very big!” said Timmy. “Yes,” said Mom and Dad. “But be careful, OK?” said Mom. “Yup!” said Timmy. They went into the airport and Timmy remembered he forgot something! He said, “Where is the hamster? Oh, No!” “What?” Timmy’s mom said. “Uh oh.” said Dad. “We have to go home again.” said Mom. “But we will miss our plane.” said Dad. But they went home. “There is the hamster!” said Timmy. “Yup!” said Timmy’s mom. “Oh, no! We are late!” said Dad. “But we can wait for the next plane.” said Mom. “Oh, OK.” said Dad. “Now we can still go to Canada.” Everyone was happy.

Syl Sackett One Dark night One dark night, far far far away in the county, it was quite strange that it snowed every night! In a small house there were three people named Bill, Syl, and Will. They were poor because they only had $3.35. They had problems. They had no food,water, and other things they needed or wanted. One evening, Syl went out to get some things they needed from their friend, Lucy, who lived far away. That night it was about -58,536 degrees Fahrenheit, which is really cold. When Syl got to Lucy’s house he knocked on the door. Lucy came to the door. She was tall and said, “Hello! Please come in and get warm.” Syl exclaimed, “We don't have what we need at our house, like food and water.” So Lucy said, “I will give you more water and food because you are my friend.” Then they both said “goodbye,” and Syl went home. When Syl got home, Will and Bill shouted, “Why did you only get what we needed and not what we wanted?” Syl replied, “You can’t get everything you want. It is better to have what you need.” Will and Bill argued with Syl for three minutes until they reached an agreement. They agreed that Syl was right and they should be thankful for what they got. Moral: The most important thing is having what you need, not what you want.

2nd Grade Kind Farmer

Once upon a time there was a great farm. The farmer’s name was Jack. He went to his friend’s farm. His friend’s name was Mike. Mike wasn’t there and the animals were messing up the farm and being noisy. “Oink, moo, quack!” Jack went back to his own farm. His phone rang. It was Mike. Mike said, “I’ll come to your farm, can I?” “Sure!” said Jack. Mike rode his truck to Jack’s farm. They drank some tea and talked about their favorite vegetables. Soon it was time for Mike to leave. When he got back to his farm, he couldn't believe his eyes. The farm was soooooooooooo messy. There was mud everywhere. The animals had pooped all over the floor. It smelled like rotten tomatoes. Yuck! The animals were running around everywhere. They were not in their pens. The hay wasn’t in the barn. It was thrown out and the wind blew it away. Mike felt awful. Everyone is going to laugh at me, Mike thought to himself. Thirty minutes later, Mike got an idea! He could just buy a new farm that is clean. The next day, he got another farm. When Jack came to visit, he said “Wooooooooooooooooooooow!” Jack was so surprised because it was so clean. The floor was so shiny, it was slippery! Everything smelled like clean air. Mike didn’t even notice that there were no animals! After a few seconds, Mike missed his old farm so he went back to it. He missed the animals. So, he went back to the messy farm. The animals missed Mike. The animals tried to say sorry. The farmer understood them and they all lived happily ever after.

2nd Grade The Journey of the Bugs

Once upon a time there was a worm family and an ant family. But the worm family was jealous of the ant family because the ants could do anything they wanted but the worms couldn’t. The ants had six legs but the worms didn’t have any. The baby worms made the baby ants cry and the adult worms made the adult ants do all the work. They were so tired. Until one day a girl from the worm family said, “Leave my ant friends alone!” With that one word everybody was still. She shouted again and thought, Well brussels sprouts! Nothing worked. The worms kept doing what they were doing. It was still going on. How boring! The ants were tired and tired until one day they were free from the worms. The worm family finally knew what they had done wrong. The worms sometimes did bad things such as throwing balls at the ants. But they knew when to stop so that was good enough. A girl named Jill was friends with a girl named Gini. They were best friends. After all they were best friends since the ants and the worms stopped fighting. Gini was from the ant family and Jill was from the worm family. Their friendship was going on and on. Now everybody was happy. Their friendship never ended. The ant family and the worm family lived happily ever after.

2nd Grade The Three-headed Dragon

Once there lived a three-headed dragon. After ten years he went to a village and destroyed it for one day. Then he came back in the cave and slept for another ten years. When the three-headed dragon came back to the village and was about to destroy it, a knight came to stop the three-headed dragon. The three-headed dragon breathed a blast of fire, but the knight just dodged the fire and shot the dragon’s wing so it couldn't fly. When the dragon fell on the ground, the dragon tried to bite the knight. But the knight blocked the dragon’s bite with his mighty shield. Then the knight struck the dragon with his sword, the dragon could now fly. So the dragon flew up and dodged the knight’s slash. Then the dragon fired three blasts of fire and it hit the knight. Because of the knight’s armor he was still alive, but he got some damage. Then the dragon tried to hit the knight with its tail, but the knight blocked it with his shield. Then the knight tried to shoot the dragon’s leg, and it actually hit the dragon’s leg. The dragon was still alive so the knight tried to shoot the dragon again, but the dragon blocked the arrow with its tail. Then the dragon breathed some fire to the knight. It hit the knight but he was strong. Then the knight tried to slice the dragon with its sword. It hit the dragon, but it was still alive and hit the knight. Then the knight put fire on one of his arrows and shot the dragon. It burned the dragon. Then it bit the knight, but because of the knight’s armor it didn’t hurt him too much. Then the knight tried to shoot the dragon’s wing again, but the dragon dodged the arrow.Then the dragon hit the knight. This time the knight fell on the ground. The dragon was about to breathe out fire at the knight, but a villager threw rocks at the dragon. Then all the villagers threw rocks at the dragon. The rocks distracted the dragon. Then the knight stabbed the dragon with all his might, and that was the end of the three-headed dragon. Then the knight and the villagers had a dragon meat party and they lived happily ever after.

The farmer said, “What's that?’’ The farmer heard another yelp, this time the farmer went outside a giant spider was about to ... bite one of the farmers smallest PIGS! “STOP!’’ shouted the farmer. “Ha ha ha,” laughed the spider. Just then the pig’s mother came and ... kicked the spider, and sent the spider flying ... onto the mountaintop. But the spider was really mad so he came back again! One cold night the spider crept into the barn, he crept towards the sleeping farmer ... and dragged him to his cave. The next morning the animals did not know why the farmer had left them. That night the animals had a meeting. The duck said, “I think the giant spider captured the farmer and took him to his cave.” “That's it,’’ said the cat. That night the animals went to the giant spider’s cave. The spider was out hunting, so the animals could rescue the farmer from the cave. But when the giant spider got back to his cave, he saw the farmer was gone. He thought it was the animals. So he went to the barn. The giant spider whispered, “I will kill the animals!” The giant spider hid behind the barn, and tiptoed into the barn. And tried to ... take one of the animals, but the farmer stopped the giant spider, by grabbing one of the spider’s legs and throwing him out of the barn and far far away. And they all lived happily ever after except for the giant spider, who was dead.

Gillian Kern Once upon a time there lived four ants. They loved their house. There were also thirteen rooms. They did everything that we couldn't do in winter. So one day two lovely ants were married. Their names were Marly and CJ. Then one month later, Marly was pregnant and she was very ill so she worried about the baby. The next day Marly had her baby in the hospital. Her name was Cally. Marly loved her baby. Cally was so adorable, she was as cute as a baby kitten. She loved her house too. She loved everything in her house, even her dirty bed. It was all that she wanted ... until Marly had another baby. It was a boy named Benji and he was adorable. He was always hungry so he ate all his vegetables. He also loved the house. He slept in Cally’s crib so Cally slept in another bedroom. The ants slept for two months until Marly was pregnant again. She had another baby boy and named him Jasper. He was adorable too. He was too cute to be alive. Their mom was so happy she had three lovely babies. Then she told God to stop giving her babies. The babies met their Uncle Jimin who cleaned pools, and their Aunt Angie who was a doctor. One day, Aunt Angie came to Marly and said, “How about I help you Marly?” Marly replied, “OK!” So, Marly went to Angie’s office and laid down on the bed. Aunt Angie came in the room and said, “I am going to give you a sleeping shot so it doesn’t hurt.” After that Aunt Angie checked Marly’s x-ray and discovered Marly’s back was broken! As soon as Marly woke up, she realized she was in her own bed at home. Aunt Angie came over and exclaimed, “Your back is broken so you need to rest in your bed for eight weeks. So I will bring you your breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” Marly felt heartbroken because she wanted to spend time with her family and not just stay in bed all day. She was so disappointed. Eventually, eight weeks passed and Marly was delighted and cheerful because her back was not broken anymore. She stood up and felt excellent. Her family was happy too! Then five years later, Marly turned into a grandma and CJ was a grandpa and their kids were moms and dads. Cally was married to a boy named Henry, Benji was married to a girl named Ginny, and Jasper was married to a girl named Ashley. So they were all married and they all had babies. They visited Marly and CJ every day.They all had a boy and a girl and lived an exciting life in their journey under the world.

2nd Grade The Dragon's Life

Once upon a time there lived a father dragon who had a baby dragon. Now, they both lived in an enormous volcano and meteorites usually crashed, so they had to move to the sea. The father dragon missed the volcano. Everyone knows that Poseidon is the ruler of the sea, but when the dragons reached the sea, there was no room left in the sea, so they had to live on the sand of the beach. The next morning, Poseidon arrived at the beach. Poseidon wanted the dragons to live in his underwater palace. He asked, “Can you please come to my underwater palace?” The dragons dove into the ocean. They were really excited to live in the underwater palace. So far, the dragons’ lives were going perfectly fine until Ares, the Greek god of war came. He wanted revenge. He yelled, “I have come for my revenge!” Poseidon had long ago banished Ares from the sea, but now he returned. Poseidon tried to stop Ares but it was too late. Ares grabbed Poseidon’s trident and blasted him out of the sea. Ares laughed, “Ha ha ha” at Poseidon. Suddenly, the father dragon zapped Ares with his laser and Ares melted. Then Poseidon instantly returned and they (including the dragons) lived happily ever after.

Epilogue The baby dragon grew up and married another dragon and had babies. They visited Poseidon again. Well, for Ares, it didn’t turn out so good. Ares melted, but he also evaporated so no one ever saw him again (except when it rained).

2nd Grade Shoey and Anty Once upon a time there was a shoe named Shoey and an ant named Anty. They were good friends but fought. Anty said, “You know I am stronger than you.” Shoey growled, “You know I am bigger than you” “NO!!!” they both said. “I am gonna throw you!” Anty shouted. Then Shoey said, “Oh yea? Than I am gonna step on you!” They both said, ”I don’t care! OK?!” So they were so so angry at each other. They even ignored each other for a year. A year later they said, “Sorry let’s be friends again and let’s not fight now.” One year was too much time for them to be apart, so they wanted to be friends again. Anty felt pleased, and Shoey felt excited because they were friends again. So they tried to live happily ever after ... but they had

another fight ... a big fight ... .

Oh no! They were so angry at each other because Shoey tricked Anty so badly. There was a giant mirror in Shoey’s room. Shoey told Anty to go to the mirror so Anty did and bumped his head into the mirror. Then Shoey laughed at Anty. Anty felt mad because Shoey tricked, hur,t and laughed at him. So Anty tried to kill Shoey!!! What could they do?! Then Anty pushed Shoey and Shoey fell backwards and hit the back of his head! Shoey felt very mad at Anty. Anty was happy that Shoey was hurt. Shoey went to the hospital because his brain was hurt. Shoey’s mom was frustrated and took him to Anty’ s mom. Anty got in trouble and his mom said “sorry” to Shoey’s mom because her son hurt Shoey. After one week, Shoey was OK. Anty finally said, “Sorry, Shoey. I will not hurt you again.” “I am OK,” Shoey lied. “Really?” Anty asked. Shoey exclaimed, “Um, no, I am not OK.” “Oh ... ,” Anty said sadly. The friends went away from each other. One more year later, Shoey finally accepted Anty’s apology and they lived happily ever after and they never fought again. They learned that they should not fight and hurt their friends. Even if they do fight, they can still be good friends because, “Good friends are hard to find, harder to leave, and impossible to forget.”

2nd Grade The Eight Squares and the Big Oval

Katrien Knox-Nielsen One day in a village of shapes called Village Triangle, there were eight little squares and a great big oval named Owen Oval. Owen Oval was mean to a lot of shapes. He hit, kicked, and punched shapes. The eight little squares were nice to Owen Oval, but Owen Oval was mean to them. The squares tried to talk out the problem, but Owen Oval didn’t listen.

The eight squares told their mom, Suzy Square. Suzy Square told Owen Oval’s mom, Olivia Oval, about her son. Olivia Oval and Suzy Square were friends, but their sons were not. Olivia Oval punished her son, Owen Oval, and he wasn’t allowed to go to school. He liked school because that was where he could bully people and his mom didn’t work there so she didn’t know of the problem.

Olivia Oval asked her son, “Why did you bully the eight little squares?” Owen Oval replied, “Because they are younger than me and I hate them.”

Olivia Oval yelled, “How dare you say that! I am going to put you in an orphanage!” She sweetly said, “Goodbye” and dropped off her son at the Oval Orphanage. Owen Oval was happy to be in the orphanage and he did not bully the other ovals because they were all older than him. The rest of the shapes in Village Triangle lived happily ever after.

Bhavya Patel The Two Ants Once upon a time, there were two ants. They lived in an anthill near the woods. One day someone was planting a tree. A lot of brown-seed-looking things came on the ants down in their house. “GET ME OUT OF HERE!” one ant hollered. Then a sharp thing came in their house and ruined their house. One ant said, “Let’s make a new house.” The other ant said, “We can’t make a house here because there’s no space because all the place is full of plants and trees.” So, the ants went out on a journey to find a place to build a house. They knew this might be a long trip so they packed backpacks full of food, and a mini gun, just in case. As they walked through the woods, they heard a loud sound. They didn’t know what the sound was so they kept walking. Suddenly, they looked up to see a ladybird on a branch. “Hello ants! Want to have some fun?” “OK!” The ants said. They went with the ladybird and they all had fun. The ants thought the ladybird was a good friend. Suddenly, the ladybird jumped on the ants! She was trying to eat them! “Ahhhhhhh!” Screamed the ants. One ant took out her mini gun and killed the ladybird. “Phew! That was close!” The other ant said. As they kept going on their journey, the ants found four crystals. They were big and white. They didn’ t know what they were so they smelled them. It smelled so sweet that they took a bite. It was so sweet that one ant took two crystals and the other ant took two crystals, too. They dragged their new crystals and soon came to a big, open spot. One ant said, “Wow! An open place! Let’s make our house here!” The other ant said, “OK.” They dug a lot. Then one ant said, “I am tired.” The other ant said, “But we need to make a big house to live in so we have to dig.” Then they both dug and dug a lot. At last, their new house was ready. It had a swimming pool, a soccer field, a treehouse and their house looked so good. They loved their new house. They thought that they would never ever have the same problem as their old house and they never did. They lived happily ever after.

2nd Grade Two Best Friends and the Fancy Soccer Ball Once upon a time, under the ground there was an ant world. There were two best friends named Jack and John. It was the first day of Ant School. The two best friends were walking there with their siblings. Tommy was Jack’s younger brother. Jessica was John’s older sister. Suddenly, they found a fancy soccer ball! It was hidden behind the bushes. It was the color gold and had a fancy design of lightning. They loved soccer! They decided that Jack would keep the ball. They got to school and Jack put the soccer ball in his cubby. Later on, it was the first recess of the day. Jack, John, Jessica, Tommy, and Tommy’s friend, Evan, were all playing soccer with the fancy soccer ball. Suddenly, a bully named Mark ran over to the game. Evan had the ball and was about to kick when Mark pushed him and took the ball! “Hey! Give that back!” Jack yelled. “No, you uglies! It’s mine!” Mark yelled. “John, go tell Mr. Antiworld,” Jack said. Mr. Antiworld was Jack and John’s third grade homeroom teacher. John ran as fast as he could and reached the bench where the teachers were sitting. “Mr. Antiworld! Mark took our fancy soccer ball!” “OK. Let me talk to him,” Mr. Antiworld said but Mark lied to him and said he didn’t know where the ball was. As the friends were walking home, Evan called his mom and asked her if they could all have one-week sleepover and mom said yes. During the sleepover, they made a plan to spy on Mark to figure out where the ball was. The next day at school, the friends took turns spying and find the ball. While one friend was spying, the other friends were looking for the ball. After searching for four days, they were about to give up when Evan saw Mark walking down the hallway of the school. Mark went outside and walked toward the garden. Evan saw him and followed him. He hid behind desks, doors, and grass so Mark couldn’t see him. When they got to the garden, Evan saw Mark dig a hole and put the fancy soccer ball in. Then, he covered it with a fake plant. “I need to get that ball!” Evan whispered to himself. After Mark went inside and back to his classroom, Evan lifted the fake plant up and got the ball. He brought it inside and put it in Tommy’s cubby. It was just in time for the bathroom break to be over. Evan told his friends and they all jumped for joy. “Thank you, Evan!” Jack and John said. That evening, the five best friends got to play soccer and Mark got kicked out of school so they never had to worry about their ball being stolen ever again. And it didn’t.

3rd Grade PRISON PORCELAIN VASE

A long time ago, there were 10,000 dragons living in the world. And the dragons attacked humans with their big tails! So God made a prison porcelain vase to keep the dragons in. God said to humans that if dragons attacked other people or you then use this prison porcelain vase. It was about half a meter tall and the middle part was a little smaller than a soccer ball. The vase was made to trap dragons. A human had to hold the vase and point it towards a dragon. The dragon will shrink and get sucked in the vase. The next day dragons attacked the humans so they used the prison porcelain vase and trapped 5,000 dragons!! The rest of the dragons were so mad that they used a fire attack! They blew fire from all their mouths at the same time. The humans used the porcelain vase to protect themselves. They used a fire attack from the dragons already trapped in the porcelain vase. It was a very strong attack. The dragons tried to fly away but the humans used the power of the porcelain vase to catch them. Finally, they caught the 5,000 dragons that were left! The humans lived happily for three days. They didnâ€™t know that something bad was going to happen. Every dragon in the porcelain vase was crushed together and turned to one body called Red Death. Red Death broke the porcelain vase like a chick hatching from an egg. The giant dragon started flying around, spraying fire. Red Death killed most of the humans on Earth. There were only two boys and one girl left. So God made one more porcelain vase that was the strongest ever, strong enough to hold Red Death forever but the humans had to catch him.

Alexander Han God went to the humans and told them that they have to catch Red Death in the new porcelain vase. The humans started to make a plan to catch him. They said, “Let’s have one person run away and another person wait for Red Death to follow the first person. The other person can hold up the porcelain vase and catch Red Death. Who’s going to do it?” Two boys stood up. Their names were Jimin and Noa. The girl’s name is Haemin and she will tell them what to do from the tree. Haemin climbed the tree. “When you hear me snap, Noa, you run. Jimin will hold the porcelain vase to catch Red Death.” They heard Red Death coming. They started the plan. Haemin snapped her fingers. Noa ran away through the field. Red Death chased him. Then, Jimin held the porcelain vase and caught Red Death. Red Death was stuck in the vase forever. God made more humans and they lived happily.

3rd Grade A Fun Adventure That Helped Jake Once upon a time, there was a boy named Jake. His family was poor. They couldn't even afford a bed for Jake and his mom and dad so they had to sleep on the hard, cold floor. However, he was intelligent. He had good physical education. He was 14 years old and was always bright and happy. One day Jake was walking home from school. He was at a fork and he went the wrong way. His happy face started to get a little worried. He thought, How could I get lost?! Is this a dream?! over and over again. He wandered around a roundabout. Suddenly, he saw his neighbor, Mr.Kim!! Mr.Kim lived right across from his house so he ran to Mr. Kim. “Mr.Kim! Mr.Kim!! I got lost. Could you help me find my house?” “Sure,” said Mr.Kim. Mr.Kim led him to the parking lot and Jake rode Mr.Kim’s Jeep and arrived at Jake`s house. Jake said, “Thank you” and quickly went in his house like a person running away from a swarm of bees. The next day, he got lost AGAIN!!! He wandered around the same way he went the day before. He WALKED home instead of getting a ride from someone. Instead of finding his home, he found a tree, an unusual tree. This was a very very tall tree. Jake never knew that the back of the tree was where his house was located because the front door was the opposite way from the tree. After going around the tree, he realized that the tree was next to his house! He decided to check this tree out the next day because it was getting dark. The next day, he looked at the tree. He ran around the tree, then looked at the bottom part of tree again. It looked like a samurai squid. Then he looked at the middle part. It looked like Everland. Then he looked at the top part. It looked like a snow globe. He tried to climb up the tree, but failed because his legs weren't fast enough. He fell on the ground, but he didn't give up. He tried to climb up the tree again, and fell down again. He decided to try again in the future. Jake thought, What a strange tree!! While he went in his house. He saw that tree for the next two years and was starting to get tired of seeing that tree. After a while, one early morning when it was his birthday he was watching the news and was shocked. There was the tree’s picture! Next to the tree’s picture was the mayor. The mayor said, “The person who climbs to the top of the tree will get a gold medal!!” Jake thought, I should climb to the top of the tree and get a gold medal! But I am a little scared. He whispered quietly, “I should climb the tree when I’m trained and when I’m at least 20.” So he started his plan to climb up to the top of the tree. He turned 19 after training himself for three years so he trained himself for one more year. The first three years went quickly but the last year went slowly. Finally, it was his birthday and he turned 20! The next day he put on his backpack. Inside was a flashlight, two sandwiches, one-fourth piece of toast and a handful of berries. He ran out like Superman on a mission. But he came running back, crashing into the sofa because he forgot his binoculars. He stood up, dusted himself, grabbed his binoculars, then ran back out. He started to climb up the tree. A group of news reporters started recording Jake to send it to the mayor. The lowest part of the tree was easy to climb so Jake passed it with no complication. Jake couldn't be recorded by the news reporters anymore because he was four kilometers high so they needed helicopters to record Jake climbing up the tree. The middle part was a mini maze and it was a little hard but he managed to climb up. He took a break and ate the two sandwiches, the one-fourth piece of toast and some of the delicious, juicy berries he brought with him. After the long break, Jake resumed his fun adventure. He was feeling really energetic. However, he didn't know that the next part was the hardest. It was really slippery. Jake slipped a lot. But with the big tree’ s help, he climbed up to the TOP!!! Everyone cheered and chanted, “Go Jake! You did it, Jake! Yay! Jake felt proud of himself. The helicopter sent the tape to the

David Jeong mayor. The mayor couldn’t believe his own eyes. The following day, Jake got some paint, metal, and wood to make a tree house and elevator. With a lot of help from his family, Jake made the tree house and elevator within a year. Everyday, he would start climbing the tree in the morning, eat lunch at the top section in the tree house, check out his tree house in the afternoon and climb back down the tree at supper time. Over the next two years, Jake's family made two more tree houses with an elevator. They even added a tire swing. After making the tire swing, they barely had any more materials. The mayor gave the gold medal to Jake and said “This tree is Jake's!” One day, Jake's tree grew a lot of apples!! Jake sold some of the apples and got money. Then a problem happened. The apples were too high. However, as if by magic, the apples broke the stems by themselves and struggled to get down the tree‘s long, smooth branch. So Jake got out a basket and hid the apples and the basket behind the tree so his mom and dad won't see it. He decided to keep it a secret and give his parents a shock. His dad's birthday was coming soon and they didn't even have money to buy a birthday cake. So Jake secretly got money by selling apples and his present was a big cherry birthday cake for his dad and a golden chair. When it was his dad's birthday, Jake bought a golden chair. Then he turned off all the lights and hid the the birthday cake and himself. His dad woke up and sat on the golden sparkling chair. Then the lights turned on and Jake shouted, “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!” His mom woke up and was shocked. “When did we get this much money?!”his mom asked. Jake said, “It's a secret.” He took out the big cherry birthday cake. His dad was surprised. He ate a slice. “Best thing I've ever had in my life!!” His dad exclaimed!! Jake said, “It's called cake.” One month passed and because of “Jake's secret,” his family was rich and because of this, there were improvements. Their old house turned into a two-story mansion with a swimming pool and a buffet. Their cold, hard backyard turned into a soccer field. Jake used money to join a good soccer team and pay for his uniform and membership. His soccer skills were getting better and better. He scored more and more goals. He was getting smarter and smarter. Finally, Jake slept on his bed for the first time in his life. And his family was not poor anymore.

3rd Grade My First Day at APIS

When I woke up in the morning I felt very lazy. I walked side to side bumping on my desk and even falling down off my bed. I thought it was going to be a horrible day because I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. It was my first day at my new school APIS. I felt a little scared and excited. I walked all the way to my classroom. Mrs.Park, my teacher, met me in the hallway and showed me where to put my stuff. So after I put my stuff away, I went into the classroom. I t ho ug ht t o m ys e l f I m i g h t have lots of friends because they all looked kind. I felt a bit shy because I wasn't used to my classmates. After Mrs. Park introduced me, I wasn’t shy. Instead I was happy. I met Jenny, Ianna, Chloe, and Yeonsue. I was very excited to meet new friends. I thought this was going to be the best day ever! My classmates and I went to music and learned how to play the recorder and played games that included beats and rhythm. At lunch time, Ianna said, “This is where the cafeteria is.” “OK thanks for teaching me,” I said. At lunch recess Ianna,Yeonsue, and I went piggyback riding on Alex’s back. We all enjoyed it, even Alex.

Esther Kim When I came back from recess I typed on a Chromebook for the first time. This made me think APIS is a school that helps students learn better. I thought I will learn how to type better in third grade. In snack time, Mrs.Park asked me to do splits and back flips because she knew I liked gymnastics. I felt a bit shy but did them anyway. “Good job!” Mrs. Park said. So many students came to watch me. They said, “Wow!” Even though my morning was HORRIBLE the rest of the day was AMAZING!!! When you come to a new school being worried and scared, you should think about good stuff because you never know what is going to happen. If a new student comes you should help them and be kind to them. Also try to help them like the school. Because if they like the school, they might say something like “I want to come to this school every day!” or “I like this school!” Then they will not be distracted thinking of bad stuff and instead they will think of good stuff that might happen. It’s important to be optimistic because good things can happen even when you are at a new school.

3rd Grade The Flower Story Once upon a time, there were some flowers in a flower school. Their names are Love Chrysanthemum, Happy Daisy, Sadness Violet, and Anger Rose. One beautiful spring day, the flowers were at school. It was recess time. Love Chrysanthemum was lonely and really wanted to join the other flowers. She thought the flowers would say no to her. So Love Chrysanthemum stood all by herself alone for the whole day. This happened every day. Then, Happy Daisy came to Love Chrysanthemum. Happy Daisy said, “Do you want to play with us?” Love Chrysanthemum said, “No, it’s fine.” Happy Daisy was worried. Love Chrysanthemum didn’t have any friends. Happy Daisy thought o f s o m e t h i n g t o m ak e L o v e Chrysanthemum happy. Happy Daisy said to the other flowers, “Let’s make a special gift for Love Chrysanthemum, but we need to come in a perfect time.” Sadness Violet said, “Maybe when she is alone at recess?” “Perfect!” said Happy Daisy. So the next day the flowers came to Love Chrysanthemum and said, “Do you want to play with us?” Love Chrysanthemum said, “Thank you for trying to be helpful but no it’s fine.” But Happy Daisy had another plan. The next day the flowers went to Love Chrysanthemum.

Ianna Sim The flowers said, “Would you like a lot of friends?” At last Love Chrysanthemum said yes. Love Chrysanthemum had many friends. She had a lot of happiness. Love Chrysanthemum was happy because she had a lot of friends. Love Chrysanthemum hugged her new friends and they got along everyday.They played together everyday. They played games like tag, would you rather, and more. Love Chrysanthemum said, “I love my new friends.” Love Chrysanthemum was glad her friends did not say no when she was lonely. Love Chrysanthemum said “Maybe spring isn’t that bad.” So Love Chrysanthemum started to like spring with her best friends. Not only does Love Chrysanthemum like her friends but she also likes her school.

어느 학교에 나무가 한 그루 있었어요. 봄이 왔는데 나무는 여전히 검은색이었어요. 왜냐하면 나무는 친구가 없었 거든요. 나무는 여러 기분들과 같이 있으면 좋겠다고 생각했어요. 나무는 기쁨이에게 친구가 되어 같이 놀자고 이야기 하고 싶었어요. 하지만 기쁨이가 싫다고 할 것 같아서 그냥 혼자 있었어요. 행복이가 나무에게 와서 말했어요. “같이 놀래?” 하지만 나무는 거절했어요. “아니야, 괜찮아.” 행복이는 나무가 걱정되었어요. 행복이는 다른 기분들을 만나서 나무에 대한 이야기를 하며 나무와 같이 놀자고 이 야기했어요. “우리 나무를 기쁘게 해 주자.” “나무가 혼자 있을 때 가서 같이 놀아줄까?” “그래, 그게 좋겠다.” 다음 날 기쁨이, 행복이, 슬픔이, 친절이는 나무에게로 갔어요. 기쁨이가 나무에게 말했어요. “우리 같이 놀까? 같이 놀면 재미있을 거야.” 나무는 쑥스러운 듯이 말했어요. “그래, 우리 같이 놀자.” 나무는 여러 기분 친구들이랑 같이 놀기 시작했어요. 나무는 친구들이 좋고, 학교도 좋고, 세상이 너무 좋았어요.

3rd Grade The Tree that Controlled Boy’s Feelings

Once upon a time there was a tree with a power that could control a boy’s feelings. For example, he could control feelings like sad, mad, and happy. The tree was huge. One day the tree was thinking, Should I make the boy feel happy and have peace or should I make him mad and have conflict? Or maybe I should make him sad and make him cry. Then the tree had an idea. I will look at the boy and see what’s happening and then I will shoot my power and make him sad, mad, or happy. So the tree stared at the boy like an eagle. After awhile the boy was playing in a playground and got hurt. So the tree was about to shoot his power of sadness then suddenly the boy’s friend came and asked, “Are you okay? What happened?” The boy answered, “I fell off the swing and got hurt.” Then the tree had no patience because he was lazy and didn’t want to wait and tried to shoot the sadness power to the boy. Suddenly a wizard came and the tree asked, “Who are you?” The wizard answered, “I am the one who gave you the power to control the boy’s feelings. Your job was to be responsible of his feelings.” Then the tree recognized who the wizard was. And the wizard said, “Do not shoot the sadness power.You can see he’s playing with his friend and he is happy.” Then the wizard said, “You need patience.”So the tree shot the happiness power to the boy. That day, the wizard gave the tree a power to not only control the boy’s feelings but even the boy’s actions, and his mind. But the tree could not control boy’s words. At last, the tree learned a lesson that you need patience. From this day, the tree had patience. The tree, the boy, and the wizard were happy. Especially the tree was happy because of their talk and the tree learned a lesson. The wizard was very very proud of the tree and the wizard was proud of himself, too.

3rd Grade Before and After Problem in Space Once upon a time there were eight planets. There were Mercury, Saturn, Jupiter, Neptune, Uranus, Mars, Venus, and Earth. All of them were the helpers for King Sun and Queen Moon.

so the five planets got scared. They were Venus, Saturn, Neptune, Earth, and Uranus. They realized that they were wrong to yell at Jupiter and Mercury so they decided to go out and find them.

One day all of the planets were fighting against each other saying,

It was hard to find the other three planets because the outer space was so big. They didn't know where to start. They decided to go to another part of the Milky Way.

“You're so small!” Saturn said to Mercury. “Oh yeah? You’re so big!” Mercury said to Saturn.

“Yay!” Venus shouted. They found Mars. “Mars, why did you leave?” the planets asked.

“Why do you have so much water on your surface?” Jupiter shouted to Earth. “Well, you have too much gas!” Earth shouted to Jupiter. So they fought a whole lot, saying the same things over and over. AND BOOM! Suddenly, King Sun appeared and shouted, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING!” But they didn’t listen and still fought and fought. Neptune said, “Mercury, you have to leave because you’re the smallest of the eight planets.” So Mercury left the solar system. Uranus and Mars said together, “GET OUT OF HERE!” to Jupiter.

“Because Queen Moon fainted and I got scared that I will get in trouble.” Mars said “Now let’s go find Mercury and Jupiter.” The other planets answered, “Okay let’s go together.” The six planets found something really big. The six planets thought that was Jupiter so they called “Jupiter!” Somebody was coming. IT WAS JUPITER! Everybody was so excited about what was happening. They went to find Mercury. Uranus shouted, “Mercury, where are you?”

Jupiter said, “Fine I will go out of here!” with a mad voice. Everyone was scared of Jupiter’s loud voice. King Sun and Queen Moon came running because of Jupiter’s voice and said, “Where are the two planets? We only have six planets left?” King Sun and Queen Moon were very sad, very very sad. Mars was scared of what was happening so he left, too. He was scared to say that he said to his friends get out of the solar system. Suddenly Queen Moon felt so shocked that she fainted! Everyone was shocked. Mars was gone

Somebody said, “Who’s calling me?” And Mercury came out from behind two big stars. All of the eight planets went back to the solar system to tell the good news to King Sun and Queen Moon. King Sun and Queen Moon heard the good news and said, “Thank you, my helpers, for finding Mars, Jupiter, and Mercury.” The eight planets, Queen Moon, and King Sun lived happy in the solar system from that time on.

3rd Grade The Tree Once upon a time, there was a tree that had branches that were shaped like a roller coaster. People broke the branches to make roller coasters. The people kept on breaking the branches. The bottom part of the tree was sad that his branches were gone and got used to build a roller coaster instead of providing food for giraffes. The middle part of the tree was happy because the tree got used to build a roller coaster and he was glad that he was able to help people have fun. The top part of the tree was mad because he didn’t have branches to make clean air. Then suddenly more branches grew out of the trunk! So the tree was happy. For a few days he was happy but the tree wasn’t happy after all. More and more people came to break the branches! After a few days, a man called Freddy was wandering around the forest. Then he found the roller coaster tree. He built a wall around the tree to build a treehouse. At first,the tree felt safe. But soon, the tree began to worry. Freddy climbed the wall and built a treehouse and thought about how he could get down. He got an idea. He made a ladder out of wood and nails. The tree didn't like having a treehouse on him. It was uncomfortable. Freddy started to climb down but the tree started to shake and the treehouse fell to the ground with a crash! The treehouse broke into little pieces. Freddy fell to the ground and he knocked out his front tooth. A TV news channel heard about Freddy so they decided to send a reporter to find out what happened. The news reporter’s name was J.J. J.J. came and he asked questions to Freddy. The news reporters asked, “What happened to the tree house? Why are you missing a tooth?” Freddy answered, “The tree house fell to the ground because the tree shook. I fell to the ground and lost a tooth.” Then the tree started to talk. The tree said, “I was mad so I shook myself to let the tree house fall down. I wanted to revenge.” The news reporters recorded what the tree had said and they broadcasted on TV. After watching the news, people understood the tree’s feelings. They felt sorry for the tree. The people kept the tree alone and the tree was all happy. So the people knew not to break branches again. The bottom part of the tree was happy because he can provide food for the giraffes. The middle part of the tree felt still felt happy because he saw people enjoying the wooden roller coaster called, T-Express, in Everland. The top part of the tree was happy because he now had branches and leaves to make clean air.

I was in Florida with my family and we went to the beach for swimming. I swam in the ocean by myself and I saw a great white shark! â€œAhhhh!â€? I screamed. I started to swim back to the shore super fast. The great white shark followed me. I thought he was trying to eat me. Then, the great white shark turned back and went away. I felt scared. Suddenly, I realized that I was on the shore. I felt happy. The next day, I went to the same beach and swam by myself. And I saw the same great white shark again. The shark recognized me and suddenly he was hit by a lightning. Then he turned into a shark tree.

3rd Grade Tall Tree

Louie Park Once there was a country called Tree. And there were 500 people living there. The land was shaped like a Tree. That tree was tall like one trillion stories high. The tree was touching Saturn. One Sunday afternoon, one trillion UFOs attacked Saturn and Saturn broke into pieces. The UFOs attacked Saturn because aliens didn´t like Saturn’s color. Saturn’s color was brown. Aliens did not like brown because it’s the same color as bears. They hated bears because bears once broke their spaceship. A little bit later, Earth fell DOWN! When Saturn was attacked by aliens, some pieces hit the Earth and made the Earth fall down. Suddenly, 500 people got on the airplanes to fly to the moon. Three minutes later, all 500 people got saved. Earth went to the black hole because Saturn pieces hit Earth so Earth went in the black hole. The black hole squeezed the Earth like a vacuum. When Earth was gone 500 people were sad because the black hole squeezed Earth and they could not live on Earth anymore. Five hundred people moved to the moon because the black hole squeezed the Earth. The Earth was gone so they lived on the moon. And the 500 people made buildings like apartments. People felt sad because Earth was gone. After one day the 500 people invented a weapon that could destroy the black hole. At last, the people went in the space with the new weapon and destroyed the black hole.

Once upon a time there was a fox named Magic Fox, and he had power to use magic and lived in the deep forest. One day, he found three trees. The first tree was called, Mad Tree. He’s a maple tree with red bark and spiny branches. The second tree was called Sad Tree. He’s also a maple tree but on top there was snow. He also has red bark with branches pointing down. The third tree was called Happy Tree. He has red bark with skinny branches. The three trees are magical so they can talk and even though they can take off their roots, they can still live. One day, Magic Fox was standing with the three trees. Magic Fox didn't have any friends so he was happy to find these magic trees. He asked them if they wanted to play with him. “No!” The trees said. Magic Fox asked, “Are you bored?” but no one answered. Magic Fox was mad so he made a plan to treenap Mad Tree because he looked mad. A day later, Madtree was treenapped. Magic Fox got an ax and a wagon. When Mad Tree was sleeping, Magic Fox took the ax and chopped him down. He took Mad Tree away in the wagon. The next day, Sad Tree and Happy Tree were left. Sad Tree said, “Where’s Mad Tree?” No one answered … Sad Tree thought, What! Only me and Happy Tree are left! They were surprised. The next day, Magic Fox felt mad and sad so he decided to treenap Sad Tree. This time, it didn’t work with the ax so he brought a hammer. He used the hammer once and then got the ax, cut the tree up, and took it away with the wagon. Sad Tree did not know who was treenapping him but he heard, “Ahooo!” “It’s the sound of Magic Fox!¨ said Sad Tree. “What if Magic Fox turns me into a person?” said Sad Tree, talking to himself. Meanwhile, Magic Fox used his magic and turned Mad Tree into a car factory. Mad Tree became more mad because he is now a car factory. Magic Fox switched a button and Mad Tree started to make cars. Magic Fox did this so he can make more money by selling the cars. Magic Fox turned Sad Tree into a snow park. He was now making more money because people had to pay 10 dollars to go in the snow park. People paid a lot of money and went inside. Magic Fox used magic and disguised himself as a person and bragged to other people. “I have a lot of money,” he said. The next week, Happy Tree got treenapped by Magic Fox. Magic Fox used more magic and made Happy Tree turn into a play house. Kids paid six dollars each. Magic Fox was too greedy. He made every tree work and now he had 66 million dollars. Magic Fox used magic and disguised himself as a person. He became super rich.

Matthew Jeon 숲 Mad Tree got super mad that he almost exploded but if he did, everyone’s going to explode in a fire so he tried to stay calm. It was hard to stay calm. Magic Fox stole money even rode a rocket ship, went to Mars and stole more money from some rich 전우민 aliens. Then he went back to Earth and bought meat, chicken, and salad. Magic Fox got fatter,fatter, and fatter. The next day all the magic spells became weaker and started to disappear. Happy Tree, Sad Tree, and Mad Tree used their powers to revenge 숲 Magic Fox.They used their magical spells by taking off their branches and used them as their magic sticks. So they twirl their magic sticks and said, “Abracadabra!” 숲 All of a sudden, Magic Fox became kind. He felt sorry for what he did by treenapping and making a lot of money for himself. 너는 여러 가지 기분이 있다 Magic Fox was surprised and he said,”I surrender! OK!” Mad Tree used his branches and trapped Magic Fox in one of his나도 cars he똑같다 has made. Magic Fox said, ”Sorry!” Then Magic Fox used his last magic to go back to the past and he became a nice ordinary fox. The three trees lived very happy with Magic Fox.

3rd Grade The Dancing Tree My mom yelled, “Today is a great day. Let’s go to a park.” My mom and I put our clothes on and ran quickly to the car. My mom drove about 30 minutes to the park. When we arrived, Mom and I walked slowly to buy me an ice cream. Many customers were waiting in line to get ice cream. I felt like it would take years to buy just one ice cream. As I was looking around, I noticed a tree next to the ice cream stand. It looked very old and sad. The trunk of the tree was crooked. Instead of a normal brown color, it was black so it looked old. I felt curious about this tree because it looked so sad. After I enjoyed my ice cream, I went to see the old and sad looking tree again with my mom. I told my mom in a gentle voice, “Mom while you were buying ice cream I saw this tree.” Then I realized that there was a hotel beside the park so I asked my mom if we could stay in that hotel. My mom said in a nice voice , “OK, but only for one night.” I exclaimed, “Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!” My mom and I ran to the hotel because it was getting dark. We paid the money, got our room key, and went to our room. Soon after that, we fell fast asleep. At 12:00 midnight, I woke up and saw my mom still sleeping. I snuck out of the hotel to see the tree I saw next to the ice cream stand. I felt curious because the tree was dancing when he was supposed to be sad. I came up to the tree and asked him, “Why are you dancing?” Then he said in a soft deep voice, “Because I like to dance.” I was so scared that I turned around to walk back to the hotel as fast as possible but then the tree grabbed me on the arm. I yelled, “Let go of me! ” I was too busy yelling so I did not notice that the tree was getting mad. He was getting mad because he was afraid I’d wake up the people sleeping. When I looked up, I saw the tree’s angry face. Then, I fainted. When I opened my eyes, I was relieved that it was only a dream. I looked out the window to see if the tree was still there and it was still there. I woke up my mom and yelled, “Rise and shine.”

William Yoo I kept my scary dream as a secret from my mom because my mom might think I am a scaredy cat.

I left the hotel and went inside the car but then I got bored watching my mom driving. So I pulled out my phone and played video games.

Finally, we were home. But then I froze, when I saw our tree in the front yard of my house. It reminded me of the tree I dreamed about. My mom asked, “What's the matter honey?”

So I said, “ Oh, nothing Mom.” When Mom and I were inside our house I looked out the window. And saw our tree. I was thinking why I had the scary dream. I remembered how the tree grabbed my arm. My mom said to me, “You looked scared when you saw our tree. What is the problem?” So I replied, “I had a dream that this tree was very very scary!”

옛날에 왕자님과 공주님이 한 성에 살았어요. 왕자님의 이름은 ‘타미’였어요. 공주님의 이름은 ‘소피아’였어 요. 어느 날 왕자님과 공주님은 집 앞으로 소풍을 갔어요. 숨바꼭질도 하고 즐겁게 놀았어요. 왕자님은 공주님과 결혼 하고 싶었어요. 그래서 왕자님이 공주님에게 반지를 주었어요. 그런데 공주님은 반지를 받지 않았어요. 왜냐하면 공주 님이 왕자님을 별로 좋아하지 않았기 때문이에요. 사실 왕자님은 공주님이 원하는 만큼 잘 생기지 않았어요. 공주님은 새로운 왕자님을 찾으러 옆 마을에 갔어요. 소피아 공주님이 새로운 왕자님을 만났어요. 하지만 새로운 왕자님은 참 성격이 못됐서 공주님은 예전 왕자님을 그리워하기 시작했어요. 어느 날 소피아 공주님이 도서관에 갔다가 우연히 타미 왕자님을 만났어요. 두 사람은 서로 사과를 했어요. 그리고 결혼을 했어요. 공주님은 사람이 어떻게 생겼는지는 중요하지 않다는 사실을 드디어 알게 되었어요.

축구를 통해 배운 일 이진호 오늘은 큰 축구 경기가 있는 날입니다. 빨강팀과 파랑팀이 경기를 합니다. 빨강팀은 세계에서 다섯 번째로 우수한 팀을 이길 정도로 실력이 좋았습니다. 하지만 빨강팀 선수들은 자기가 제일 축구를 잘 한다고 잘난 척을 하였습니다. 이길 때마다 다른 팀 앞에서 자기네가 제일 잘 한다고 우기다가 싸우는 일이 많았습니다. 파랑팀은 세계에서 가장 실력이 좋은 팀이었습니다. 파랑팀은 쉬지 않고 연습을 해서 실력을 키울 수 있었습니다. 그리고 파랑팀은 이길 때마다 잘난 척을 하지 않고, 다른 팀들을 위로해 주었습니다. 오늘의 경기에선 빨강팀이 축구를 정말 잘했습니다. 서로 막상막하로 싸우던 빨강팀과 파랑팀의 점수가 9대 9가 되었습니다. 그러다가 파랑팀이 공을 골대로 가져가고 있었습니다. 빨강팀은 ‘이기기 위해서는 이길 수 있다는 것을 믿어야 된다’고 생각했습니다. 그들은 마음 속으로 누구에게도 지지 않을 것이라고 생각했습니다. 하지만 노력은 하지 않았습니다. 빨강팀 골키퍼가 뛰어서 공을 잡으려고 했습니다. 그런데 파랑팀이 공을 넣게 되었습니다. 그래서 결국 파랑팀이 이겼습니다. 오늘 경기를 통해 빨강팀은 생각했습니다. ‘우리가 너무 잘난 척을 했나 봐, 이제부턴 이기더라도 다른 팀을 더 위로해주고, 잘난 척을 덜 해야겠어.’ 빨강 팀은 경기에서 2등을 했습니다. 하지만 만족했습니다. 그리고 잘난 척을 하지 않고 다음 경기에서도 최선을 다했습니 다.

저는 책을 좋아합니다. 책 읽는 것도, 그리고 책과 함께 하는 것 모두를 좋아합니다. 책을 읽으면 행복하고, 책 을 통해 날마다 저는 새로워집니다. 그래서 저는 제가 꿈꾸는 도서관을 직접 만들어 보았습니다. ‘사만타 도서 관’, 지금부터 제가 소개해 드릴테니 한 번 와 보실래요? 일단 도서관 안으로 들어가면, 도서관 사서의 책상이 있습니다. 편안한 소파, 시계, 포스터도 있습니다. 사람 들이 길을 걷다가 바로 도서관으로 들어 올 수 있게 길가에 있습니다. 아무 곳이나 둘러보아도, 책과 의자들이 정 리되어 있습니다. 어린이들, 그리고 어른들까지도 모두 다 책을 읽을 수 있습니다. 재미있는 책, 슬픈 책, 판타지, 실제 일어난 이야기 등 모든 책들이 가득 채워져 있습니다. 도서관의 문 앞에는 책 이름과 유명한 작가 이름이 쓰여 있습니다. 작가 J.K. Rowling의 ‘Harry Potter’ 하 고 Daisy Meadows의 ‘Rainbow Magic’입니다. ‘Ramona’s World’를 지은 Beverly Cleary도 있습니다. 어 른들을 위한 책, 고등학교 학생들을 위한 책, 중학교 학생들을 위한 책 등 수준이 달라도 걱정할 필요는 없습니 다. 자신에게 알맞게 찾아가 책을 고르면 됩니다. 사만타의 도서관은 정말 재미있습니다. 언제든지 와서 편안하게 책을 읽고 가세요. 제가 사만타의 도서관 안 에서 늘 기다리고 있겠습니다.

2016년 어느 화창한 봄 날, 짜장면을 좋아하는 중국콩과 판초를 입은 멕시칸콩이 만나 서로 이야기를 나누었다. APIS에 다니는 ‘박은혜’라는 아이가 있는데, 영어와 한국어로 공부 하고, 중국어도 배우는 중에 스페인어까지도 배우고 싶어하니

옛날에 물고기 한 마리가 있었다. 그 물고기는 참방참방 뛰어 다니는 것을 좋아했다. 그러던 어느 날 물고기가 어떤 남자를 만났다. 둘은 친구가 되었다. 그는 물고기와 놀고 싶어 했지만 수영을 하지 못 했다. 물고기가 남자에게 말했다. “내가 수영하는 법을 알려줄게.” 그런데 그 물고기는 바깥에서 살 수 없고 밖에서 나오면 죽는다. 그리고 그 남자는 물에 빠지면 죽는다. 남자가 수영을 할 줄 알고 물고기도 바깥에 나갈 수 있었다면 얼마나 좋았을까. 그 물고기는 남자를 돕기 위해 밖으로 나갔다. 그러자 숨을 못 쉬게 되 었다. 시간이 흐르고 물고기는 호흡곤란으로 죽어가기 시작했다. 남자가 달려왔다. 물고기는 거의 죽어가고 있었다. 물고기가 남 자에게 마지막으로 이 말을 남겼다. “물고기도 밖에 나갈 수 있다면… 사람도 물에 들어갈 수 있다면…” 그리고 물고기는 마침내 죽었다. 남자는 눈물을 뚝뚝 흘리면서 울었다. 그 눈물이 물고기 위에 떨어지자 물고기 밑에 있던 자 그마한 돌이 조금씩 커졌다. 몇 년 후, 남자가 물고기가 죽은 자리로 다시 돌아왔을 때 나무가 한 그루 서 있었고, 그 나무 위에는 물고기 모양의 커다란 돌이 있었다. 그 앞에는 이런 푯말이 붙어 있었다. ‘The fish in the tree.’

꿈 꾸는 거북이 홍성현 우리 아버지는 ‘닌자’입니다. 저도 ‘닌자’입니다. 그렇지만 우리 엄마도 과연 ‘닌자’가 맞을까요? 제 머릿속은 복잡 합니다. 생각이 많아질 때마다 제 머릿속에서 움직이는 ‘생각 기차’는 바닷속 깊숙히 아래로 아래로 내려갑니다. ‘추카- 추카- 추추--’ ‘근데, 우리 엄마도 과연 닌자일까?’ 어렸을 때 이 고민들로 괴로워하던 제 몸이 어느 순간 하늘로 ‘붕-’하고 날아 오르더니 중국, 인도, 미국 할 것 없이 여기 저기 떠다녔습니다. 지구 밖인 우주로 제 몸이 날아가 버린 적도 있습니다. ‘우리 엄마는 과연 닌자가 맞을까?’ 이제는 열심히 그 답을 찾아 보기로 했습니다. 우선 닌자 아버지에게 물어 보기로 했습니다. 아버지께서는 궁금해 하는 저에 게 이렇게 대답해 주셨습니다. “Hey, 엄마도 Ice Power가 있어.” 나는 닌자 할아버지께도 여쭤 봤습니다. 할아버지께서는 잠시 생각에 잠기시더니 이렇게 대답하셨습니다. “흠흠, 니 엄마도 국수를 좋아해.” 나는 마지막으로 스스로 도서관에 가서 ‘거북이’에 대하여 조사해 보기로 결심했습니다. 나처럼 등에 딱딱한 껍질을 달고 있습니다. 우리 엄마도 말입니다. DNA검사도 했습니다. 99.999999% 일치!!!! 엄마는 확실히 닌자가 맞습니다. 그 때 제 머릿속에 서 다시 ‘생각 기차’가 날아 올라 갑니다. ‘추카- 추카- 추추--’ 저는 이제부터 우리 엄마를 더욱 더 사랑하기로 했습니다. 엄마는 닌자가 맞으니까요.

오늘 아침에도 나는 달콤한 꿈 속을 허우적거린다. ‘꿈아, 꿈아, 절대 끝나지 말아줘!’ 하지만 그것도 잠깐이었다. 엄마의 잔소리와 함께 나는 눈을 비비며 잠에서 깨어났다. “어서 일어나!” 학교는 재미가 없다. 내 시험점수는 늘 빵점이다. ‘왜 맨날 나는 꼴찌일까? 엄마한테 또 혼나겠네.’ 우울한 생각을 하면서 집으로 터덜터덜 걸어왔다. 집에 와 보니 누나가 있었다. 나는 누나를 볼 때마다 부러웠다. 우리 누나는 예쁘고 공부도 잘 한다. ‘누나는 부족한 게 없는데 나는 부족한 것 투성이야. 이런 나는 왜 태어난거야?’ 나는 갑자기 누나가 괜히 미워져서 툴툴거리 며 심술을 부렸다. 며칠 후 누나는 짐을 싸고 있었다. ‘어? 누나가 어디 여행 가나보다. 짐을 싸고 있네.’ 나는 아직도 누나에 대한 감정이 풀 리지 않아서 누나가 어디로 가는지 물어보지도 않고 그냥 나가 놀았다. 그날 밤, 누나 방에 갔더니 누나가 없었다. 부모님께 여쭤 보니 누나가 대학교에 가기 위해 미국으로 갔다고 했다. “나한테 말도 없이 미국에 갔다고? 말도 안 돼!” “누나가 너한테 이야기하려고 했는데 네가 계속 심술을 부려서 말할 수가 없었다고 하더라.” 나는 땅을 치며 울기 시작했다. 나는 슬프게 울면서 하나님께 기도했다. ‘하나님, 왜 누나를 미국으로 가게 하셨어요? 빨리 누나를 돌려 보내 주세요.’ 아침부터 밤 늦게까지 누나 방에 앉아서 텅 빈 의자를 바라보았다. 누나가 없으니까 같이 놀 사람도 없고 나를 도와줄 사람도 없었다. ‘왜 나는 이렇게 운이 없을까? 나는 왜 이렇게 바보같이 침대에 앉아서 책상만 바라보고 있을까? 누나가 있을 때 인사 라도 제대로 할 걸…’ 하지만 내 마음을 전할 사람은 어디에도 없었다. 오늘은 학교에 가서 공부를 열심히 했다. 50점을 받았다. 기분이 좋아 집으로 뛰어 갔다. 집에 도착하자마자 누나 방으로 들 어갔다. “누나! 누나! 나 50점 받았어! 잘했지?” 소리를 치며 달려 들어갔지만 누나가 없다는 것을 깨닫고 책상만 빤히 바라보았다. 어느덧 2년이라는 시간이 흘렀다. 침대에 누워 책을 읽으며 잠을 청하던 중 낯익은 목소리가 들렸다. “진구야! 진구야!” 나는 가슴이 두근두근 뛰었다. ‘누구일까? 설마…’ 누군가가 내 방으로 뛰어 들어왔다. 나는 너무 놀라서 책을 던질 뻔 했 다. 그 사람은 내가 꿈에도 그리던 누나였다. “누나! 어떻게 온 거야?” “방학이어서 우리 진구 보고 싶어서 왔지.” 이제부터는 누나랑 싸우지도 않고, 누나에게 심술도 부리지 않고 잘 지내야겠다. 기다리던 누나가 드디어 왔으니 이 시간들 을 소중하게 보내야겠다.

벌써 이영이랑 싸운 지 삼 일이나 지났다. 이영이랑 싸운 후 나는 이영이를 한동안 보지 못했다. 그래서 나는 지금 우정이랑 논다. 하지만 우정이랑 노는 것은 이영이랑 노는 것보다 재미가 없다. 이영이랑 노는 게 좋은데…. “야! 축구하자!” 나는 지금 책을 읽어야 되는데 우정이는 축구를 하자고 한다. 이영이는 내가 좋아하는 것을 다 알아서 편한데, 우정이는 그 렇지가 않다. 나는 지금 이영이에게 미안하다고 먼저 말할까 고민 중이다. 지금 그것 말고 다른 생각을 할 수가 없었다. 이영이는 공부를 잘하고 머리도 좋아서 숙제할 때 이영이의 도움을 많이 받았고, 모든 것을 다 이영이한테 맡겼었는데 지금은 그럴 수가 없다.

집에 오자마자 나는 빨리 숙제를 끝내려고 했지만 죽을 것 같았다. 나는 숙제를 포기하고 침대에 앉아서 이영이에게 전화하 려고 했다. 이영이 사진을 보니 눈물이 나올 것 같았다. 나는 내가 이영이에게 얼마나 심한 말을 했는지 생각하기 시작했다. 그러 다보니 이영이에게 너무나 사과 하고 싶어졌다. 그래서 나는 핸드폰을 꺼내서 이영이한테 문자를 보냈다. 문자를 보내자마자 나 는 울고 싶어졌다.

다음 날까지 핸드폰을 뚫어져라 쳐다보고 있었지만 내 핸드폰에는 문자 하나 오지 않았다. 정성을 다해 사과했는데 이영이가 받아 주지 않자 너무 실망하였다. 하루 종일 이영이 집으로 갈 것인지, 말 것인지 생각했다. 밤이 되자 식은땀까지 났다.

그 다음 날, 이영이 집에 가기로 결심하였다. 이영이 집으로 가는 길에 하트 모양 나무를 봤다. 이영이를 생각하면서 나무 를 자세히 봤다. 나무는 왠지 반으로 갈라진 것 같았다. 나무를 보면서 걷다가 무엇인가에 부딪혔다. 사람이었다. 나와 부딪혀 넘 어진 사람을 도와주려고 하다가 깜짝 놀랐다. 그 사람은 바로 이영이였던 것이다. 내 입은 막혀버린 듯 아무 말도 나오지 않았다. 그러자 이영이가 먼저 사과하기 시작했다. 나는 울기 시작했다. 내가 울자 이영이도 울기 시작했다. “정말 미안해” 우리가 이야기를 나누자 나무가 흔들리기 시작했다. 우리는 서로 사과를 하며 펑펑 울었다. 나는 이영이에게 내가 얼마나 미 안했는지 이야기하였고, 이영이도 내가 얼마나 그리웠는지를 이야기 해 주었다.

그 순간, 다시 하트 모양의 나무를 보았다. 둘로 쪼개진 것 같던 나무가 왠지 이제는 하나가 된 것 같았다.

프리미엄 강아지는 다른 집에 사는 강아지와 비교할 수 없는 삶을 살았다. 그 강아지는 15층짜리 빌딩에 사는데 모든 층이 이 강아지 명의로 되어 있었고, 각 층마다 특별 한 공간이 있었다. “안녕하세요, 강아지님! 오늘도 많은 것을 준비해 두었 습니다.” 매니저가 올라왔다. ‘멍멍!’ 강아지는 기분이 좋아 보였다. 지금 시각은 오전 여덟 시, 공기와 날씨는 맑았다. 모든 층에 불이 켜졌다. “알려 드리겠습니다. 앞으로 삼십 분 동안 씻으시고, 아 홉 시까지는 옷을 갈아 입으시고, 식사하시면 됩니다. 식사 후 그 다음엔 한국어 시간입니다. 오늘 배울 것은 ‘동요, 문장 쓰기, 말하기, 읽기’입니다.” 일단 거기까지였다. 강아지는 한숨을 쉬었다. ‘강아지가 언어를 어떻게 배워?’ 강아지는 아침부터 힘들어했다. ‘띵!’ 엘리베이터 문이 열렸다. “강아지가 나를 기다렸어? 정말 예뻐.” 강아지 주인이 올라왔다. 이 사모님의 이름은 ‘셔리’ 였다. 성이 ‘럭’이라서 합쳐서 ‘럭셔리’였다. 독특한 이름이다. 남편의 이름은 ‘이낭만’이었는데 낭만적인 이 름이라고 사람들이 말을 했다. 안타깝게도 그 부부에게는 아들이 없었다. 하지만 강아지가 있었기에 그들은 실망하 지 않았다. “내가 맛있는 것을 준비하고 있을 테니까 빨리 와.” 럭셔리 사모님이 엘리베이터를 타고 내려갔다. 엘리베이 터는 보석으로 만들어져 있었고 넓이는 11평이었다. 설계 가 잘 되어 있어서 단 한 번도 고장난 적이 없었다. 강아지는 크고 파란 침대에서 나와 매니저를 따라 갔다. 15층짜리 빌딩 공간 중 1층부터 5층까지는 씻고, 옷을 입 고, 화장을 하고, 머리카락을 가꾸는 공간이었다. 6층과 7 층은 집사와 도우미의 공간이었고, 8층과 9층은 거실 및 주방이었다. 그 다음인 10층, 11층, 12층은 부부의 침실이 었고, 13층과 14층, 15층은 강아지를 위한 공간이었다. 프 리미엄 강아지는 다른 강아지들과 비교하면 부러워할만한 여러 가지를 가지고 있었다. 자기만의 침대가 있었고 운동 기구, 맛있는 밥, 개인지도 선생님이 계셨다. 하지만 강아지 는 축 쳐진 목소리로 짖었다. ‘멍멍!’ 매니저가 강아지를 데리고 씻는 곳인 1층으로 내려갔다. 하도 많이 씻겨서 털이 솜이불같아졌다.

“나를 얼마나 많이 씻기려고 하는 거예요?” 강아지가 짖었다. 정신없이 짖다 보니 1층에 도착했다. 매니 저가 머리를 올리고 파란색 옷으로 갈아입고 장화를 신었다. 강아지가 원래대로 침대에 누웠다. 매니저는 고급 샴푸와 린 스, 바디워시를 가지고 강아지를 씻겼다. 그런 후 털을 말리기 위해서 드라이기를 가지고 왔다. 사람이 열 여덟 명이나 와서 강아지의 털을 말렸다. 리본을 달아 주기도 하고, 옷도 새것으 로 바꿔 주었다. 이제 식사 시간이었다. 밥은 당연히 최고급 사 료로 준비했고, 영양도 듬뿍 넣었다. “어머나, 우리 강아지 옷이 정말 예쁘네! 모델이 좋은가 봐.” 럭셔리 사모님이 나왔다. 씻고 털을 말리는 것은 힘들었지만 먹는 순간에는 최고로 기분이 좋았다. “식사도 다 하셨으니 이제는 한국어 시간입니다.” 매니저가 말하자 선생님이 오셨다. “안녕?” “안녕..하세.. 멍! 가나다라마바사……” 강아지는 통역 없이 얘기를 하고 싶어서 열심히 배웠다. “선생님, 멍! 저요, 나가고 싶어요.” 강아지의 눈이 많은 것을 말했다. “하지만 수업료를 받았기 때문에 나는 밖에 나가면 안 돼.” 선생님이 대답했다. 그러자 강아지가 뛰어 나가더니 수표를 가져 왔다. 그 수표에는 천만 원이라는 숫자가 적혀 있었다. “음… 그러면 나가자.” 선생님이 말했다. 강아지는 매니저한테 인사를 하고 나갔다. “밥 먹으러 가자!” 빌딩 밖으로 나가자 횡단보도가 있었다. 빨리 길을 건넌 후 주위를 둘러보니 학교가 있었다. 학교의 이름이 한자로 되 어 있었다. 강아지는 한자가 한글의 ‘밥’처럼 생겼다고 생 각했다. 한글을 조금 아는 강아지는 그게 이상하게 쓰여 있는 ‘밥’이라고 생각했다. “밥이다!” 강아지는 밥을 조절해서 먹어야 했기 때문에 늘 배가 고팠 다. 학교로 들어간 강아지는 다시 주위를 둘러보았고, 사람들 이 자기를 잡으려고 하는 것을 느낀 강아지는 건물 안으로 뛰 어 들어갔다. ‘멍멍!’ 복도에 있던 사물함이 개집인 줄 안 강아지는 사물함 안으 로 들어갔다. “어, 이게 뭐지?” 그날부터 강아지는 비좁고 답답한 사물함 안에서 살게 되 었다.

나는 고아다. 부모님에 대해 아무 정보가 없다. 남겨진 것 이라고는 조각 팬던트가 달린 목걸이 뿐이었다. 나는 행복하지 않았다. 학교에서 늘 왕따를 당했다. 고아라 고 놀리고, 엄마, 아빠가 없다는 뜻으로‘모부’라고 불렸다. 매일 반복되는 나의 지루한 생활, 아침 6시에 일어나 7시까 지 씻고, 7시부터 8시까지는 밥을 먹는다. 8시부터 8시 반은 옷을 갈아입고, 9시까지 학교에 간다. 나도 다른 애들처럼 살 고 싶었다. 학교 공연 때는 부모님과 할머니, 할아버지 등 가 족 모두가 다 와서 나를 봐 주고, 졸업식 때는 꽃을 주고받는 그런 삶 말이다. 하지만 나에게 그런 삶은 불가능한 것이었 다. 아무리 기다려도 나에게는 아무도 와 주지 않으니까. 학교는 2시에 끝난다. 2시 반에 고아원 차가 오고 우리는

‘여기는 내가 살고 있던 세상보다는 낫겠지?’

식사를 마친 후 버스를 탔다. 고아원 버스는 매우 낡았다.

나는 한 발자국을 문 안으로 내딛었다. 하지만 바닥이

40년도 넘은 것 같은 버스이다. 버스가 출발했고 곧 학교에

느껴지지 않았다. 나는 다시 생각을 잠겼다.

도착했다. 나는 1반 22번이었다. 선생님께 인사를 했다. “안녕하세요, 선생님!”

‘달 속 세계로 들어가면 나는 행복을 찾을 수 있을 까?’

선생님은 컴퓨터를 보시던 얼굴을 들어 나를 쳐다보시고

하지만 아무리 생각해 봐도 두려움이 없어지지 않았다.

르게 잠이 들었다. 벌떡 일어나보니 벌써 열한 시 반이었다.

나는 하고 싶은 질문이 정말 많았지만 동시에 그 사람

생각해보니 탈출하기에는 열시보다 열한 시 반이 더 좋은

들을 믿을 수가 없다고 생각했다. 그래서 나는 그들을 무시

것 같았다.

하고 고아원으로 들어가려고 했다. 갑자기 내 목걸이에서

‘모두 다 잠들었겠지?’ 조용히 가방을 메고 살금살금 밖을 향해 걸어갔다. 밖에

빛이 났다. 그들이 목걸이를 보며 나에게 말했다. “우리는 네 목걸이의 나머지 조각을 가지고 있어.”

나오자마자 차가운 바람이 나에게 몰려왔다. 나는 어디로

그들이 목걸이를 꺼냈다. 그 목걸이도 빛나고 있었다.

가야할 지 알 수가 없었다. 하지만 눈을 깜빡하자 목걸이에

나는 믿을 수가 없었다. 그들은 정말 우리 부모님이었다! 흘

서 빛이 나며 내 앞에 길을 보여 주었다. 그 길은 하얗게 빛

여러분, 안녕하세요? 저는 아시아 퍼시픽 국제 외국인 학교 5학년, ‘투’입니다. 작년에 베트남에서 한국으로 왔 습니다. 저는 한국 문화와 한국 역사를 좋아합니다. 한국 문화는 재미있고, 한국은 편안하고, 즐거운 곳입니다. 제가 한 국어를 처음 배웠을 때, 한국어는 지루했습니다. 그리고 한국어는 복잡했습니다.‘작다’를‘작아요’라고 하거나 ‘작습니다’라고 다르게 말하는 것이 어려웠습니다. 하지만 ‘아, 그래, 한국어는 베트남어와 다른 말이지’라고 생 각했습니다. 네, 한국어와 베트남어는 다릅니다. 한국어는 그래서 참 재미있습니다.

그리고, 한국은 정말 아름다운 나라입니다. 제주도 여행에서 알았습니다. 베트남은 산이 없습니다. 제주도에는 아 름다운 산이 많습니다. 그리고 베트남은 덥고 끈적끈적합니다. 하지만 제주도는 시원합니다. 한국과 베트남은 다릅니 다. 저는 그것을 배웠습니다.

저는 작년에 행복하고 좋은 학교 APIS로 왔습니다. 처음에는 걱정했습니다. 하지만 Mr. Underhill 선생님이 너무나 친절하게 잘 가르쳐 주셨습니다. 그래서 기분이 좋았습니다. 그리고 한국어 시간에 숫자를 배웠습니다. 재미있고 쉬웠 습니다. 그래서 한국어를 계속 잘 배우고 싶습니다.

저는 한국 문화를 잘 아는 베트남 리더가 될 것입니다. 동양과 서양의 문화를 잘 배울 것입니다. 하지만 다른 나라 의 말을 배울 때 조심해야 합니다. 그 나라 문화를 잘 알고, 좋아해야 합니다. 그것이 글로벌 리더의 시작입니다.
