TALBOT COUNTY YOUNG PROFESSIONALS CONNECTING PEOPLE. DEVELOPING LEADERS. BUILDING COMMUNITY. That’s what Talbot Young Professionals are all about. Established in 2002 as a committee of the Talbot County Chamber of Commerce, for the purpose of developing the next generation of leaders, while encouraging networking among the brightest minds in our community. Anyone can join the YPs! While it’s true, many YPs fall into the typical 2140ish age bracket, there’s also plenty more who join because they’re new to the area, new to their job, or just plain looking for fun stuff to do with like-minded people.

The YPs create events and programs, like the Toys for Tots toy drive, and the St. Patrick’s Day Potato Race, but also organize fun networking outings like brewery bus tours, paint nights, escape rooms, ball games and mixers! Wanna know more? Come to a monthly luncheon, or after-hours mixer. Talbot YPs offer assistance to our community partners. Joust Maryland 26.7 Miles

The Little Red Schoolhouse, Longwoods Road

This trail highlights Maryland’s state sport, Jousting. For the past 138 years, in early August on “the hottest day of the year” according to participants, the Maryland Jousting Association holds its Annual Horse Show and Jousting Tournament at historic St. Joseph’s Church. Annually more than 30 riders attempt to spear not one another, but a series of small rings while galloping down the course at full tilt. Bikers at any time of year will appreciate the setting. There is more Maryland history on the trail as well. Wye Landing is typical of the many steamboat docks that once ferried product and passengers to and from Baltimore well before the Bay Bridge was built. Talbot Farmland 27.6 Miles

Farming accounts for 60% of land use in Talbot County, with over 80% of these lands in “grain agriculture,” a rotation of wheat, corn, and soybeans whose products are sold locally to the poultry industry. This trail will take you deep into the farmland east of US 50 with wonderful “big sky” vistas. Cordova is a typical agriculture crossroads, complete with railroad tracks that once served to transport produce to canneries and markets on Delmarva and beyond. Two general stores provide refreshments that are otherwise scarce on this trail. Side trails to Covey’s Landing, Reeses Landing, and Kingston Landing are worth the diversion for shade and differing views of the Choptank River. If you are a birder, the bridge at King’s Creek has been reliable for Prothonotary and Yellow- throated Warbler. During the cooler months the former cornfields abound with wintering Canada Geese and Tundra Swan and, in the northern parts of the trail, huge flocks of Snow Geese settle in now and then. There is an active Bald Eagle nest in a distant sycamore east of Lewistown Rd. and a half-mile north of private Bluff Pt. Rd. The birds of the summer countryside are the beautiful Indigo Bunting and Blue Grosbeak that festoon the telephone wires like ornaments.

Chesapeake Views 38.2 Miles

This is one of the few bike trails that will afford waterfront views of open Chesapeake Bay. The small towns of McDaniel, Wittman, and Sherwood quickly remind one of days gone by and the remarkable presence of agriculture on the Eastern Shore even on this peninsula where water is so near. Tilghman, on the other hand, is a waterman’s village that formerly hosted bustling fleets of skipjacks and boats outfitted for oyster tonging, crabbing, or net fishing and today is a major port for recreational fishing. The old ferry landing in Claiborne predates the Bay Bridge and was one of the major ways people from the Western Shore eventually reached Ocean City. The trail affords a wonderful cross-section of land use and culture that contribute to Talbot County’s unique sense of place.

Oxford/St. Michaels 29.6 Miles

This is recognized as one of the premier bike trails in the Mid-Atlantic region. The route includes the historic boat building town of Oxford (museum, general store, restaurants), the crossroads of Royal Oak with its antique stores and post office with the cannon ball that lodged in a nearby oak tree during War of 1812, the popular tourist destination of St. Michaels with its many shops and restaurants. Treat yourself to superb ice cream treats at the Scottish Highland Creamery in Oxford or Justine’s in St. Michaels. It is recommended that you follow the indicated trail between MD 33 and Royal Oak; avoid Royal Oak Rd. which is very narrow with a deep ditch on one side and enjoy the view from atop Miles River Bridge instead. Oxford Bellevue Ferry-Open 7 days a week, beginning in Oxford at 9:00 a.m. Continuous crossings every 15-20 minutes. March through November Last trip is at sunset, Call (410) 745-9023 for exact times and spring start up. Extended hours June 1 through August 15: Friday and Saturday evenings Last trip leaves Oxford 8:30 p.m. Last trip leaves Bellevue 8:45 p.m. Closed: December, January and February

Cemetery Quest 28.1 Miles

Here is your challenge! Try and find all the cemeteries indicated on the map. Some are prominent and marked with a church; others are smaller with only ancient tombstones; at least one is sequestered in the woods and is best found by locating the periwinkle that grows in its vicinity. Two are the resting places of famous Talbot Countians: Nathaniel “Nace” Hopkins in Trappe, and the Senior Robert Morris at the ruins of White Marsh Church, father of Robert Morris, Jr., the Revolutionary War financier who is commemorated by an inn in Oxford. What is the oldest date you can read? Let us know and we will add it to the quest. If you are a birder, this is a great trail for binoculars. Plan to take two side trips west of Koogler Rd. Both Piney Hill Rd. and Tarbutton Mill Rd. cross streams that were once millpond sites that provided water power sufficient for grinding grain. The surrounding mature wetland forests are great for early spring migrant songbirds. You are sure to see Carolina Chickadee, Tufted Titmouse, and Carolina Wren. But the specialties are Kentucky Warbler, Louisiana Waterthrush, and Ovenbird which sing often in May and June as well as the Baltimore and Orchard Oriole, Scarlet Tanager and Great Crested Flycatcher.

There’s a season for art, film, food, music, and cultural festivals and a season for quiet and calm, ranking this as a go-to destination for both action-packed adventures and relaxing retreats. Accessibility by car, boat, and small plane makes a visit here ideal for a long weekend or extended stay for travelers from D.C., Philadelphia, New York, and beyond. Talbot County’s cultural identity comes from the unique history, character, and setting of each of its small towns and villages. From quaint picket fence-lined streets to bustling brick sidewalks to working watermen and agricultural villages, the Chesapeake Bay is the tie that binds them. Here you’ll find the diversity of the American landscape all in this region of Maryland’s Eastern Shore. To fully appreciate the county’s history, one must explore the panoramic waterways and view the 18th- and 19thcentury estates whose inhabitants depended on the rivers for commerce, communication, and transportation. The exact founding date of Talbot County is lost to time. The earliest recorded reference to the county dates to 1661, when a writ was issued to its sheriff. The county is named for Lady Grace Talbot, the sister of Cecil Calvert, Second Baron Baltimore, and the wife of Sir Robert Talbot, an Irish statesman. Originally, the county was much larger, encompassing the land between the Choptank and Chester rivers. The territory was deemed too large, and a portion of the county’s northern end was lopped off and reorganized as Queen Anne’s County in 1706.

The town of Easton was created to be the county seat of Talbot County. After the separation and reformation of Queen Anne’s County, a new courthouse closer to the geographic center of the newly reshaped Talbot County was needed. The two acres that would become Easton were chosen for their central location and the ease with which they could be reached from any part of the county. A courthouse was completed for the 1712 court session, and the village of Talbot Court House sprang up around it. As time passed and the village grew into a town, it took on the name Easton, for its geographical location in proximity to the neighboring town of St. Michaels. The streets named North, East, South, and West are the old village’s original boundaries. Very little of colonial Easton remains today. Numerous fires swept through the town over the years, destroying most of the original wooden buildings. The courthouse for which the town was built was demolished and rebuilt in 1794. The new, larger building still serves as Easton’s courthouse. Hotels and businesses grew around the courthouse, and by 1810, Easton had become the largest town on the Eastern Shore. Easton Point, located at the confluence of two branches of the Tred Avon River, became a busy port. In 1817, the steamboat Surprise began its run from Baltimore to Annapolis to the point. Easton played its part to support the U.S. war

effort during the Second World War, hosting a small military airfield constructed just outside of town. The airfield was used primarily for aerial reconnaissance and submarine spotting, but also contained a small prisoner of war camp. German soldiers, captured from the European Theater, were put to work on base construction projects, as well as being loaned out to local citizens for farm work. After the war ended, the military handed over the airport to the local governments, where it still serves the local community today as Easton Airport. The 1950s brought the Bay Bridge and the new Route 50 to connect the bridge to the ocean. Fortuitously, highway commission planners abandoned their initial plan to run the new highway straight through town, connecting it to Washington Street. Wrapping Route 50 around Easton’s edge allowed the town to maintain the charming character of its downtown district. Today, those ambitious building projects have allowed Easton to grow and access the major metropolises across the bay while retaining its personality and heritage. Easton offers a wide variety of shopping choices, from elegant boutiques to department and discount stores. Historic homes and attractions, museums, recreational, and cultural facilities make this area attractive to all ages and provide a sought-after quality of life. Easton has faced many changes over the years, but it has always been the vibrant center of commerce and politics in Talbot County.

ST. MICHAELS St. Michaels has been an active port since the town was founded in the 1770s. It gets its nickname, the “town that fooled the British,” from a curious incident during the War of 1812. Before dawn on August 10, 1813, a British fleet under the command of Admiral George Cockburn assaulted the town in the Battle of St. Michaels, with the intention of crippling the town and its shipyards. Despite their superior firepower, the British were unable to do any significant damage. Legend holds that this failure was aided by ingenuity on behalf of the local townsfolk, who supposedly dimmed their lights and hung lanterns in trees outside of town, causing the British ships to overshoot their targets. The blackout was allegedly so effective that only one house was struck. Known as the Cannonball House today, that house is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Over the years, the economy of St. Michaels was based on shipbuilding and seafood. Log canoes built in St. Michaels and used as workboats in the 1800s evolved into the sport of log canoe racing later in the century. Today, as in so much of the Chesapeake Bay region, fishing has given way to tourism as the primary economic driver in this

picturesque port town where vessels visit from all over the world. Bordered by the Miles River to the east and Broad Creek to the west, St. Michaels is a haven for boaters, sportsmen, and outdoors enthusiasts of all stripes. Excellent fishing and guided hunting make St. Michaels a year-round sportsman’s getaway. The world-class Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum captures the history of life on this beautiful estuary. St. Michaels offers quiet charm and a safe, peaceful retreat for a day trip, weekend, or longer vacations. Strolling down the streets of town gives visitors an opportunity to step back in time. Many of the shops on Talbot Street are historic houses that have been converted into businesses. Historic sites, enchanting inns, bed & breakfasts, and museums help paint the picture of a bustling town.

OXFORD A charming, tree-lined village surrounded by water, Oxford has a population of less than a thousand. As the oldest town in Talbot County and one of the oldest towns in Maryland, it has a long history of maritime activity. It’s also the home of the Oxford- Bellevue Ferry, America’s oldest privately owned ferry service, in talbotchamber.org

existence since the town was founded more than 340 years ago. Oxford marks the year 1683 as its official founding, when the Maryland General Assembly formally designated it as a seaport, although it was in existence for perhaps 20 years before that date. A year later, Oxford and Annapolis, then known as Anne Arundel’s Towne, were selected as the only ports of entry for the entire Maryland province. Up until the Revolutionary War, Oxford was a prominent international shipping center surrounded by wealthy tobacco plantations. Today, the town is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Notable early citizens included Robert Morris, Sr., a Liverpool shipping firm’s agent who greatly influenced Oxford’s growth; his son Robert Morris, Jr., who was known as the “Financier of the Revolution;” Rev. Thomas Bacon, a clergyman who wrote the first compilation of the laws of Maryland; Jeremiah Banning, a sea captain, war hero, and statesman; Matthew Tilghman, known as the “Father of Statehood” and the “Patriarch of Maryland;” and Colonel Tench Tilghman, aide-de-camp to George Washington, best known for delivering the message to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia of Cornwallis’ surrender. The American Revolution marked the end of Oxford’s glory. Gone were the British ships with their variety of imported goods. Tobacco was replaced by wheat as the main cash crop. Businesses went bankrupt, cattle

grazed in the streets, and the population dwindled. After the Civil War, Oxford emerged from its long slumber to nearly a century of renewed prosperity signaled by completion of the railroad in 1871 and improved methods of canning and packing that opened national markets for oysters from the Chesapeake’s bountiful beds. Business boomed, houses sprung up like never before, and tourists and boaters arrived in droves. But it would not last. In the early part of the 20th century, the oyster beds played out, the packing houses closed, and the railway and steamships eventually disappeared. Oxford became a sleepy little town once more, inhabited mainly by retirees and second homeowners.

TILGHMAN ISLAND Tilghman Island is truly an old-fashioned waterman’s community. Located at the westernmost tip of Talbot County, Tilghman Island is a three-mile-long stretch of lowland nestled between the Chesapeake Bay and the Choptank River. The only way to access the island is by bridge at Knapps Narrows or by boat. Tilghman was admitted to Talbot County in 1707. Its namesake is Matthew Tilghman, an American plantation owner and delegate to the Continental Congress who inherited the island in 1775. After his death, the island passed in and out of family hands until the 1840s, when it was sold and reorganized

into a traditional community. Surrounded by water, island residents have always depended on the bay for their livelihood. Over the years, occupations have focused on crabbing, oyster tonging and dredging, seafood packing, and vegetable canning. Boatbuilding was a necessity on the island, two of the most popular types being the log canoe and the skipjack. Visitors delight in seeing those unique vessels at the dock or under sail. Housing varies from modest bungalows to new subdivisions and historic houses offering accommodations with a view of Harris Creek, the Choptank River, or the bay’s main channel. Rambling around the area by bicycle or car is a good way to see this quaint waterman’s village. Full-service marinas make Tilghman Island a natural stopover for boaters, and few places in the state offer such an incredible fishing experience.

TRAPPE Trappe began as a small crossroads hamlet in the 1750s, becoming an incorporated municipality in 1827. While its exact origins are unknown, the town’s name is attributed to one of three possibilities: the local occurrences of wolf trapping, a Trappist monastery, or a particularly renowned local inn. The Trappe area produced two governors of Maryland within a 10-year span: Samuel Stevens, who

QUEEN ANNE The community of Queen Anne straddles the Talbot and Queen Anne’s county lines and borders Hillsboro in Caroline County. The town was founded in 1882 when the Pennsylvania Railroad built a station at the site. When Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia trains ran through this town, scows were used to haul grain from downriver to the railroad. Just south of town, visitors will find the Frederick Douglass Park on the Tuckahoe, county park dedicated to the life and legacy of an American hero. Born Frederick Bailey, he endured the slave system’s many cruelties in breaking families and crushing the spirit. He self-liberated from Maryland and claimed his new name in 1838 at age 20. Talbot County’s formative influence on Douglass lasted throughout his 77 years. His searing impact on the county began when he told of his bondage,

self-emancipation, and transformation from slave to abolitionist orator in his 1845 autobiography, an immediate international bestseller. Using actual names and deeds of Talbot Countians — a first for the slave narrative genre — he made shocking examples of Talbot County citizens, which focused the world’s attention on the American chattel slavery system’s inhumanity, immorality, and unconstitutionality. Douglass’s effect on Talbot County has been lasting. From slave to fugitive to agitator to local hero, Talbot County formed Douglass, and Douglass’s resistance and ideals changed Talbot County. His words continue to inspire his many local descendants and their fellow citizens.

served from 1823 to 1825, and Daniel Martin, who served from 1828 to 1829 and from 1830 to 1831. In the early 1900s, it produced a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Frank “Home Run” Baker. The Hall of Famer was a member of the Philadelphia Athletics team when he hit his celebrated home run against the New York Giants in the 1911 World Series. At the north end of Main Street is the 15-acre Home Run Baker Park, used for Little League baseball, soccer, basketball, and other youth recreational activities. At the south end of Main Street is Nace Hopkins Park, named for a former enslaved who founded the first school for African Americans in Trappe and established the town’s long-running Emancipation Day celebration.

WYE MILLS The Wye Oak State Park is the hub of this tiny community hidden just off Route 50. The community owes its name and founding to the historic Wye Mill, the oldest continuously operated gristmill in the country. It still operates to this day, primarily as a living museum. The mill is one of five locations listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including the Miller, Wilton, and Wye historic houses, as well as the Old Wye Church. Constructed in 1721, it has served its local Episcopal congregation ever since. Fully restored to its colonial appearance in the late 1940s, it stands as a testament to local history.
