A free publication released on the occasion of Vision & Justice: A Convening, distributed free of charge and available in digital form to the general public.
Sarah Lewis guest edited the groundbreaking “Vision & Justice” issue of Aperture magazine, which sparked a national conversation on the role of photography in constructions of citizenship, race, and justice. Taking inspiration from Frederick Douglass’ landmark Civil War speech “Pictures and Progress,” this new civic curriculum addresses both the historic roots and contemporary realities of visual literacy for race and justice in American civic life.
The book includes thirty-one texts on topics ranging from civic space and memorials to the intersections of race, technology, and justice.
