At Graduation 2025, Head of School Shannon Harris paused to recognize the extraordinary contributions of Mary Howe, Thames Shaw, Vicky Jones, and Edye Ciaccia. Together, these four women have devoted 95 years of distinguished service to Antilles. Their commitment has shaped classrooms, mentored colleagues, and inspired generations of Hurricanes many of whom stood on stage that day as living proof of their impact. Their work has touched nearly every corner of the school, leaving a legacy felt not only in academics, but also in the culture of care and community they helped build. As they step into retirement, their legacy of guidance, dedication, and excellence will remain an enduring part of Antilles for years to come.
THAMES SHAW, 29 YEARS
MARY HOWE, 36 YEARS
After years of shaping young minds and making a lasting impact on campus life, Mary Howe is wrapping up a remarkable chapter at Antilles A dedicated member of the Lower School faculty, she has taught both third and fourth grades and most recently brought her energy and enthusiasm to Physical Education, helping students build confidence, healthy habits, and a love for movement Within the past few years, she has also overseen the elementary sports leagues, cheering our third, fourth, and fifth graders on Over the years, she’s guided countless students including her own daughter, Rebecca ‘04 a reflection of the deep and personal connection she and her family share with the school As she retires, we celebrate her many contributions and the legacy she leaves behind in classrooms, on the field, and throughout our community
After a career devoted to Antilles’ youngest learners, Thames Shaw is bidding farewell to the Early Learning Center a place she helped shape through her warmth, creativity, and steady leadership As a longtime Kindergarten teacher and former ELC Coordinator, Mrs. Shaw laid the foundation for generations of students, guiding them through their first steps in reading, writing, and discovery. Her classroom became known for traditions that helped children grow from student-led reptile research projects with colorful illustrations to the small teddy bears given at the start of each year to teach empathy and care. She’s also had the joy of watching her son, Mackenzie Shaw ’10, grow up at Antilles, deepening her connection to the school. As she retires, we celebrate the lives she’s touched and the legacy she leaves behind.
EDYE CIACCIA, 9 YEARS
VICKI JONES, 22 YEARS
Vicki Jones began her time at Antilles as a resource teacher, supporting Middle School students with study skills when the program first began. After Hurricanes Irma and Maria, she stepped into the Lower School, teaching first grade and later moving up with her students to second before returning to student support Throughout it all, she remained a calm and encouraging presence helping students gain confidence and find their stride Her daughters, Logan ’05 and Shelby ’10, are also part of the Antilles story, adding to the strong ties Vicki and her family share with the school As she retires, we thank her for her steady commitment and the many students she’s guided along the way
After a long and accomplished career in healthcare, Edye Ciaccia joined Antilles for her final professional chapter bringing with her a calm, caring presence that quickly became a fixture in the nurse’s office Whether tending to scrapes and sniffles or offering comfort during tougher moments, Nurse Edye approached each day with compassion and dedication In joining the school, she also became the third in her family to be part of the Antilles community, following her daughter-in-law Charlotte and granddaughter Gillian ‘20 As she retires, we thank her for the care she’s shown and the steady support she’s provided to students, families, and colleagues alike
Celebrating 75 Years
A LEGACY ROOTED IN COMMUNITY
Antilles School began in 1950 with a simple but bold vision: that St. Thomas could sustain a true college preparatory school. A small group of parents and community leaders came together, found the space, and set the foundation for what would grow into the territory’s leading independent school.
At the center was Deborah Finch, Antilles’ first Head of School, whose philosophy was that education should stretch both the mind and the heart. “Miss Finch” believed that rigorous academics had to be paired with values honesty, responsibility, and respect for others if students were to become not only successful graduates but thoughtful citizens. Finch often spoke about the role of a school as a “second home,” where students felt both challenged and cared for.
The very first classrooms were at Villa Santana, a hilltop estate overlooking Charlotte Amalie. As Antilles grew, the school relocated to Havensight, where open-air classrooms looked out over the harbor Finally, in 1971, Antilles found its permanent home at Frenchman’s Bay, where purpose-built spaces began to reflect the permanence of the mission.
Those early years were marked not by resources, but by resolve. Families, faculty, and trustees inspired by Finch’s belief that excellence was possible with dedication and heart rolled up their sleeves, gave what they could, and pulled together to give Antilles its footing. That spirit of shared responsibility and aspiration continues to define the school 75 years later.
LOOKING BACK, LOOKING AHEAD
By the 1980s and 1990s, Antilles had matured into a true college preparatory school. Enrollment was growing, new science labs supported discovery, and the arts flourished through painting, pottery, steel pan, and dance. Athletics brought both pride and discipline, while service learning projects kept the school connected to the wider community.
In 2001, the opening of the Henry L. Kimelman Library marked a turning point. The facility provided a dedicated space for research and collaboration, giving students and faculty new tools to push learning further Alumni, families, and founders gathered for the dedication, celebrating how the school had grown from Villa Santana to a modern campus.
The following year, the Mark C. Marin Center (MCM) expanded the school’s impact again. Designed for athletics, assemblies, and performances, the MCM became a space where student talent and community life could come together Its construction was driven by the vision of trustees and supporters, including honorary trustee Randolph Knight, who championed the project as essential to Antilles’ growth.
“Having come from a time when athletics was an instrumental component of school curriculum, I was immediately attracted to the initiative by Antilles School to construct a facility that would not only provide athletic opportunities for its students but also serve families and the wider St. Thomas community. Inspired by longtime Head of School Mark Marin’s extraordinary leadership and his persuasive project team headed up by Neil Prior and Bob Schmidt, the Mark C Marin Center has not only vastly exceeded my expectations but also magnificently honors Mark’s incredible Antilles legacy,” Knight noted.
The past two decades have brought both progress and challenge. Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017 forced the campus to rebuild and reimagine, while the COVID-19 pandemic required new approaches to teaching and safety. Each test reinforced the school’s strength: a community determined to provide opportunity, regardless of circumstance.
That enduring sense of possibility was echoed in 2025, when trustee and former student Charlotte Perrell P’20 spoke at commencement. Reflecting on her own years at Antilles in the Marin era, Perrell remembered the teachers who instilled in her the belief that “everything can be learned and nothing’s off the table.” She described herself and her classmates as believing they could do whatever they set their minds to. That same sense of possibility drew her back to enroll her daughter. “That is the magic of Antilles,” she told the Class of 2025, encouraging them to carry with them the same confidence that Antilles cultivates in every child.
As Antilles celebrates 75 years and looks toward its next chapter, the school continues to evolve while staying true to its founding vision.
"In every decade, we've adapted to meet the moment expanding our programs, reimagining our approach, and preparing students for a changing world," said Head of School Shannon Harris. "But what remains constant is Deborah Finch's belief that education must nurture the whole child intellectually, socially, and emotionally. That philosophy still anchors everything we do. It reminds us that true progress isn't just measured by what students know, but by who they become. As we grow and change, that commitment connects our past to our future."
That same spirit of vision and renewal is at the heart of Antilles’ 75th anniversary. Just as new buildings once reflected new possibilities, today’s milestone is marked by a new anniversary logo designed by alumna Kayla Dietrich ’07 and a yearlong celebration that invites every member of the Antilles family to honor the past while looking toward the future.
The anniversary logo will serve as a visual centerpiece throughout the year, appearing on event materials, publications, and across campus. More than a symbol, it’s a reminder of the generations who have built Antilles and the promise of those still to come
For Kayla, taking on this project was both professional and deeply personal. A Hurricane from Kindergarten through graduation, she credits her mother, Diane Holmberg, with sparking her early love of the arts. That passion grew at Antilles, where she threw herself into every art class available and edited the yearbook before studying business and art at the University of Miami. “My goal was to create a design that honors Antilles’ traditions, juxtaposed with modern, clean lines to represent its exciting future,” she explained. “Plus, the seven is shaped to mimic a diamond for its diamond anniversary.”
Now a designer with 14 years of experience serving clients from local businesses to national nonprofits, Kayla describes this project as a way of giving back to the community that shaped her She recalls fond memories of her years on campus from learning to read with Bob Books in Mrs Barrows’ class to sketching alongside Mr Wilson’s chalkboard illustrations. “This campaign will highlight 75 years of achievements and future plans, aiming to reconnect with alumni and build new community relationships,” she said.
As Antilles celebrates this milestone, Kayla’s design stands as both tribute and invitation: a bridge between past and present, a celebration of tradition, and a call to imagine the school’s next chapter together.
