PRESIDENT’S REPORT

As this edition of the College Courier reaches members, the examination season is upon us. Commencing early this month, the culmination of years of study, clinical experience, and professional commitment will see more than 400 Membership candidates and 35 Fellowship candidates, both within Australia and internationally, sit examinations in their chosen disciplines

For each candidate, these examinations represent far more than an assessment They mark a significant milestone in a professional development pathway built upon curiosity, perseverance, and a commitment to advancing standards of veterinary science. On behalf of Council, I wish every candidate success and satisfaction in demonstrating the knowledge and skills they have worked so hard to attain.

Such an undertaking is only possible through the efforts of an extraordinary network of volunteers. I extend my sincere thanks to our Chapter Subject Examination Committees, Head Subject Examiners, Examiners, Board of Examiners, supervisors, mentors, credentialling assessors, and the many others who contribute to the examination process. Their work safeguards the integrity and reputation of College qualifications.

Looking beyond the examination period, I encourage Members and Fellows to consider joining us for Vet Science Week 2026 in July. The event continues to be the premier veterinary conference in Australasia, bringing together clinicians, researchers, educators, and industry leaders from across our profession

A particular highlight will be the College Awards Dinner, where we recognise outstanding contributions to veterinary science and celebrate the achievements of our colleagues It is also one of the most rewarding evenings in the College calendar, as we welcome successful Membership and Fellowship candidates and formally acknowledge the dedication and accomplishment that their new qualifications represent

CHIEF EXAMINER’S REPORT

Hello from blustery Melbourne!

After a whirlwind of exam finalisation, June launches our 2026 examinations cycle with over 400 candidates sitting written papers across 22 Membership and 12 Fellowship subjects. The written examinations for all subjects are delivered in invigilated testing setting through the online Examena platform Practicals and/or orals for membership subjects are also delivered online with orals exams happening in real time via Zoom. Practical and oral components of the Fellowship subjects are delivered in-person in a Brisbane testing centre in mid-June

The examining teams and chapter examination committees have been hard at work designing high quality examinations, all of which are submitted for a multiple-step quality assurance review process to ensure the rigour and validity of our College assessments. It is important to remember that all examiners, examination committee members, and Board of Examiners members are volunteers and I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to everyone contributing to this monumental effort

I am confident that we will be welcoming lots of new Members and Fellows to the College this year.

The College examinations would not be possible without the tireless effort from the College Office staff who all deserve a hearty thanks when you see them at Science Week.

INTENTION TO SIT DEADLINE FOR 2027 FELLOWSHIP CANDIDATES

Are you a Fellowship Candidate ready to sit your Fellowship exam?

The deadline to register your intention to sit 2027 Fellowship Examinations is 30 JUNE 2026

No applications will be accepted after this date.

Fellowship Candidates wishing to sit Fellowship examinations in 2027 should note that it is mandatory to register their intention to sit with the College office before 30 June 2026.

No applications to sit the Fellowship examinations will be accepted after this date.

Candidates who register an intention to sit, but do not comply with current credential guidelines will be able to withdraw their application before 31 October 2026.

Please note that the credentialling deadline of 31 October remains the same, and by this date, all requirements outlined in the training guidelines must be completed.

Fellowship Review Project Project Officer Report

This project seeks to review all aspects of Fellowship training across the breadth of disciplines and settings, including entry and eligibility requirements, educational framework, learning environments, assessment approaches, feedback processes and supervisor training and support The team from the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) having completed the final report and is now being evaluated by the Board of Examiners and Project Team. An executive summary which is to accompany the full report release is expected later this year. A feedback process will also be in place for members to provide their comments.

Animal Welfare

The Chapter has been very busy in the lead up to Science Week as well as supporting candidates for their membership examinations. The Chapter’s Science Week program as always has a wide range of interesting and thought-provoking topics presented by excellent speakers

There is a strong focus on equine welfare, including a talk by Dr Peter Curl who will delve into Thoroughbred racing Other topics include animal welfare teaching to veterinary undergraduates as well as farm animal welfare in China. In addition to the wealth of new information available, the opportunity to network with new and familiar colleagues is invaluable.

A huge thanks to Professor Paul McGreevy for his tireless work in bringing together such an exciting program

The other focus for the Chapter this year has been hosting fortnightly zoom sessions to assist membership candidates prepare for their exam preparations

Sincere thanks are extended to Dr Simone Maher for arranging and facilitating these as well as to the many presenters who have generously volunteered their time

Dear All,

The College Membership and Fellowship examinations are well underway, a busy and stressful time for candidates and examiners alike Our best wishes are with all candidates sitting examinations in all subjects, but particularly those in Small Animal Dentistry and Oral Surgery and Equine Dentistry. The hard work and discipline required to get to this point is immense, and, on behalf of the Committee, I wish to acknowledge the time and effort that each candidate, and each examiner, has dedicated for the improvement of the welfare of our veterinary patients, and the advancement of veterinary dentistry

We have a great Science Week program this year, with something for everyone that faces the ‘spectre’ of dentistry or oral surgery or medicine in cats, dog or exotics in their professional life. Whether you are in general practice seeing patients with dental disease, in dental referral practice, or in other referral fields where you see oral disease in your patients, we have a wide range of accessible sessions, in collaboration with other Chapters, to help make oral and dental disease, its diagnosis and treatment less mysterious and frustrating.

Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation

The Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (VSMR) Chapter looks forward to delivering a practical and engaging programme at ANZCVS Vet Science Week 2026 on the Gold Coast. This year’s offering highlights both advanced clinical skills and the growing role of rehabilitation in veterinary practice

The programme begins with a pre-conference workshop on Thursday 23 July 2026 at the Tallebudgera Community Centre, led by international expert Ellen Martens The workshop, Manual Therapy Techniques for Canine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, is designed for veterinarians, physiotherapists and nurses with prior rehabilitation training It provides a strong focus on hands-on learning, integrating the science of manual therapy with practical application in dogs. Topics include joint mobilisation, biomechanics, and advanced assessment and treatment techniques, with structured lab sessions to consolidate skills

Ellen Martens, an internationally recognised leader in animal rehabilitation and education, also features prominently in the Science Week programme As an international keynote speaker, she will explore the science behind manual therapies, casebased clinical applications, and European approaches to canine sports medicine

Across the conference, the VSMR stream delivers a multidisciplinary and clinically relevant programme. Sessions will cover diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, and contemporary approaches to pain management and rehabilitation. Dedicated sessions examining the intersection of behaviour, pain and rehabilitation emphasise the importance of a collaborative, team-based approach to patient care

Together, the workshop and conference stream provide valuable opportunities to enhance practical skills, engage with leading experts, and strengthen professional networks Whether already working in rehabilitation or looking to incorporate these principles into general practice, the VSMR programme offers relevant, evidence-based learning that can be immediately applied

The VSMR Chapter looks forward to welcoming delegates to what promises to be a highly practical, collaborative and forwardthinking programme at Vet Science Week 2026

Stay alert to scams and phishing attempts, as scammers are always devising clever tactics to deceive. They may even appear to come from a fellow College member or someone you know

Is the sender’s email address their usual email address?

A quick phone call can help verify the legitimacy of a request and protect your valuable finances or data from being compromised.

If you find yourself a recipient of a scam email or phishing attempt, report the email by right-clicking on the email, hover the cursor over Report and click on Report Phishing.
