125. A SCARCE 1796 PATTERN HEAVY CAVALRY OFFICER’S UNDRESS SWORD, 87.cm blade Runkel, decorated with a crowned JR cypher and marked R. Sohlingen on the back edge, regulation pierced steel hilt, wire bound leather covered grip in an associated steel scabbard. This interesting and rare sword was carried by a British Officer serving in the army of Portugal during the period 1809-1914. After the collapse of the Portuguese army following the French invasion of 1807, the Duke of Wellington appointed the 1st Viscount Beresford as commander. Careful examination of the blade reveals that the original crowned GR cypher was erased and replaced with that of King John VI of Portugal. One of these ‘JR’ marked swords is detailed in The British Cavalry Sword p.72 and illustrated at plates 7.10 to 7.12.

As opposed to the usual leather grips secured by rivets this sword has removeable wooden grips that are heavily chequered to counter the reported issues regarding slippery grips. The triple bolts would allow for grips to be replaced by Regimental armourers as opposed to being returned to Enfield and is believed to be the only known example.

THOMAS FOLEY ESQUIRE CAPTAIN RN on the top flat, border engraved stepped and bolted lock signed J. HARDING and engraved with a flash behind the pan and a small stand of arms under the bolt, full stocked with chequered wooden grip, hallmarked silver trigger guard London 1798 and with maker’s mark MB (Moses Brent), horn topped wooden ramrod. Sir Thomas Foley GCB joined the Royal Navy in 1770 serving in the West Indies, Cape St Vincent and Gibraltar and then The Battle of Saintes. He served as Flag-Captain during the French Revolutionary War then was assigned to HMS Goliath under Nelson’s command in the Mediterranean. It was at the Battle of the Nile that HMS Goliath played an important role in securing victory for Nelson by manoeuvring between the French fleet and the shore, a move that encouraged four ships to follow and was pivotal in deciding the action. After that point Foley’s position as one of Nelson’s “Band of Brothers” was firmly secured. Neat repair to fore-end.

The unsuccessful siege of Acre by the French forces was a signal loss to Napoleon’s campaign in Egypt and was impressed upon him by the defending Ottoman troops under the Royal Naval command of Sir William Sidney Smith.

Rhin, Captain Charles Malcolm, in the harbour of Courageux (Corrijou, Brittany) near Brest, 14th July 1815, together with a further miniature 19th Century watercolour of two flagships who battled on 1st June 1794 inscribed Ri. Charlotte and Le Montagne, modern inscription verso that this was also taken at Corrijou in 1815, and two modern miniature portrait prints of Nelson. A 14TH CENTURY SWORD OF WAR OF OAKESHOTT TYPE XIIA CIRCA 1325-1375, 89.9cm fullered broadsword blade inlaid to one side in copper alloy with a maker’s mark, characteristic hilt with tapering square section iron guard, slender tang of hand and a half size, chamfered wheel pommel of bronze with stepped pyramidical tang button. While bearing similarities to the noted group of swords from the Arsenal at Alexandria, the inlay to the blade on this sword is more similar to that found on examples from the South German area of Passau. AN EARLY 14TH CENTURY SWORD OF WAR OF OAKESHOTT TYPE XIIA CIRCA 13001350, 90cm fullered broadsword blade inlaid to one side in white metal with a flower, a circular form and a stylised running wolf, characteristic hilt with slightly down turned tapering square section iron guard, slender, almost straight, tang of hand and a half size, chamfered octagonal pommel inlaid in white metal to the front and rear face with a looped cross, pyramidical tang button. The inlays to the blade, in particular the wolf or beast are typical indicators of a South German origin. The octagonal pommel began to emerge in the 13th Century but became more widely adopted in the 14th Century as seen on some of the best European swords from the Arsenal at Alexandria. SWORD OF PETERSEN TYPE R , 75.75cm broad fullered blade, characteristic hilt with down turned guard tapering towards the ends, these flared and inlaid in white metal with interlocking double ribbons, the pommel of five graduated lobes seated on the upturned upper guard and secured thus by two rivets seated beneath, the whole decorated to match. A VERY RARE .56 CALIBRE FLINTLOCK EAST INDIA COMPANY BAKER’S PATTERN SEA SERVICE PISTOL , 12inch barrel, stepped and bevelled lock stamped with the rampant lion motif and an Inspector’s mark beneath the pan, full stocked with regulation brass mounts, belt hook mounted on the left side, brass topped wooden ramrod. This scarce pistol differs from the two previous versions with the addition of Baker’s bevelled lock, a collared ramrod pipe but most distinctively it lacks the carved apron in the stock behind the barrel tang and neither does it have a carved teardrop to the stock behind the lock. The lack of carved collar and apron on the stock are unique to this model. See page 313 of Volume II Smallarms of the East India Company 1600-1856 by David Harding for specifications and an illustration showing the unique nature of the stock. Only partial records of manufacture exist but 1,000 (used) examples were shipped in 1829 and a further batch of 300 shipped to Bombay in 1836. The condition of this piece would suggest that this is one of the examples sent to Bombay on the 11th October 1836.

The 16th Light Dragoons (later the 16th Queen’s Lancers), joined the Duke of Wellington’s army in the Peninsular War in 1809, fighting at Porto, Talavera, Ciudad Rodrigo, Bussaco, Sabugal, Fuentes de Onoro, Salamanca, Burgos, Vitoria, San Sebastian, Nivelle and Nive. It also took an important part at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, initially being instrumental in supporting the Heavy Brigade who were in difficulty, and later in the day charging four times with the light cavalry to secure the defeat of the French army.

A 19TH CENTURY AMERICAN COFFIN POMMEL FRONTIER MADE BOWIE KNIFE , 20.5cm clipped back blade, shaped brass crossguard, the grip composed from a single piece of horn sheathing the tang and then riveted in position, brass mounted leather wrapped wooden sheath. The knife itself circa 1850-1870 and almost certainly frontier made, the sheath probably the same period.

Believed to have belonged to the Earl of Banff but more likely one of the Abercromby Baronets. The Priest Family, London Cutlers were in existence from 1779-1915.
