hree hundred eighty-seven caps flew into the blue sky on June 25 as retiring Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Mooney declared the Schreiber High School Class of 2019 graduates. Principal Dr. Ira Pernick used his love of comic books and superheroes to speak his final words to the Schreiber grads. “My love of superheroes has very little to do with their superpowers,” said Pernick. “Flying, I’m not impressed. Super strength, I can name 10 superheroes with super strength. A shield, a fancy outfit, cars, jets, I get it—superheroes have cool things. What I love about superheroes are their origin stories. In that story, we find the connections that help us identify with superheroes. Folks, we all have origin stories that become part of our histories, shape us, drive us, motivate us. We know their stories and what they have to endure to become so super. We have seen them as vulnerable as they can be and there is nothing weak about them. They use their stories as fuel. This is true for you, too.” Pernick told a brief anecdote about an anonymous senior who shared their vulnerability, a part of their origin story, and Pernick watched as the struggling high school senior turned into, as Pernick said, Captain America.

I am Iron Man. And if you want to know why, you’ll just have to wait for the sequel. Just like you, my origin story is still being written.” He further expressed how proud he was of the class and congratulated them on graduating. Soon after, Port Washington Board of Education President Karen Sloan spoke to the students to tell them that they will always find their way if they are true to themselves. Board Trustee Emily Beys announced the recipient of this year’s Bogart scholarship as Becky Han. This year’s student speech was given by Dylan Forman, who read his book report on high school. Forman told the story of when he was in middle school and would parade around the halls each Wednesday wearing different Halloween costumes, like a walrus or Where’s Waldo. “Back then, I thought I was the kid who was born to stand out and couldn’t care less about what anybody else thought of him,” said Forman. “The thing is, I’d be lying if I said that were true. Literally or otherwise, we were all wearing costumes. When I first entered Schreiber as a freshman, each day felt like Halloween, each day a new costume, a different version of me to try on. But, I’m not talking about clothes anymore. During my time here, I grew tired of the different masks and costumes. I still love Halloween, but I prefer it only once a year because I don’t want to be someone else, I want to be me. I think we all learned the value of being ourselves.” While the students learned each of their subjects, Forman explained with a few jokes, the Class of 2019 learned how to be true to themselves. “While I’ll always remember what my classes taught me here, what I’ll remember most fondly about Schreiber will be the thrill of sneaking off campus as an underclassman, my first and last Schreiber slam and leaving class to get food from friends,” he joked. Forman went on to explain to the class that Schreiber was not the stereotypical high school divided into the usual social pyramid.
“Our story at Schreiber isn’t like the others,” he said. “Our high school isn’t nearly as divided and cutthroat as the books and movies make high school out to be. Those cliques are much more similar than we think. For example, the movies could have never foreseen the existence of a nerdy athletic theater kid like me. No matter how different Schreiber’s cliques may seem, they all follow the same principles: working hard and pushing through some sort of adversity in order to obtain a goal. In the end, we all have the same goal in mind—making friends, passing our classes and leaving here with a few notable memories.” Forman finished his speech by thanking the families, the teachers and fellow students for constant support over the years and sharing the experiences with him. Mooney’s speech to the graduates followed, during which she offered advice and thanked the

class and their families for “allowing me to serve as the leader for the Port Washington School District for these past seven years. Watching all of you grow into caring, kind adults has been my greatest joy. I know I will value this moment forever... hree Schreiber High School grads soared to the top of their class academically this year. Zachary Gruber and Ryan Siegel were named valedictorians of the graduating class, while Dhiya Sani was recognized as the Class of 2019’s salutatorian.
Valedictorians
Gruber and Siegel have done almost everything together. They have been friends, debate team partners and varsity tennis team doubles partners and co-captains. So, it’s fitting that the two have both been named valedictorian, with individual GPAs of 5.19. “When I found out, I was excited,� said Siegel. “I didn’t expect to be valedictorian. I was very surprised. It’s a prestigious honor. It’s like the icing on the cake because I’ve worked really hard. It gave me that final satisfaction that all the work I put in paid off.� “It is an amazing honor to be named valedictorian,� said Gruber. “It is especially rewarding to be recognized

for all of the hard work I’ve dedicated to my academics.� The two took multiple AP classes and were part of various honor societies and clubs. Gruber was vice president of the robotics club, chess captain and debate team captain. Siegel was the president of The Ed. Foundation Junior Board and taught a Hebrew school class, but much of his extracurricular time was spent doing research on the creation of alternative

non-invasive, specific cancer treatments and competing in science and engineering fairs. The two also share a favorite Schreiber memory: winning the Long Island tennis championship. “Being dedicated to the team for the past five years and winning the championship senior year was a dream come true,� said Gruber. “Our season was especially challenging, but we fought our way to the top.�
Siegel explained he would miss walking into school every morning, during which he would be greeted by administration and hang out with his friends in the hallway. Some advice? “I would advise other students to visualize where they want to be in the future,� said Gruber. “From that moment on, students should take

chreiber’s graduating Class of 2019 is filled with students who excel in all areas, from academics to sports and volunteer work. The Port Washington Union Free School District felt two students exemplified the activeness of the graduating seniors most, class leaders Matt Kates and Elizabeth McDermott. “It is truly an honor to be named a class leader, given my class is filled with such talented and bright students,” said Kates. “It means a lot to me to be named class leader,” said McDermott. “I try to set an example for my classmates and it’s nice to know that’s being recognized.” The two each took more than five AP courses throughout their entire high school careers, were a part of multiple honor societies, including foreign language and national, and members of multiple clubs and sports. “One club I was really involved in was the Support Center at the Port Washington Public Library,” said McDermott. “I’ve been volunteering there since my freshman year. High school students mentor and tutor third graders once a week there. It taught me a lot about patience and the different ways in which people learn.” Kates explained he was part of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), American Heroes Club,

The Ed. Foundation Junior Board, Weber Individual Needs Program (WINS) and Peer Helpers. Looking back on their time at Schreiber, to sum it up, the two will miss their friends and the sense of community the school created for them.
“I will miss seeing my friends and peers in the hallway every day,” said Kates. “Our grade is extremely close and now we will be separated and dispersed throughout the country. I do know that on breaks and over the summer, we will reunite and it will be as if we never left.” “What a loaded, difficult question,” McDermott said. “What will I miss most about Schreiber? If I had to choose one thing, it’s the people, the sense of community. Senior year I have become so close to people I never thought I’d be friends with—people from different friend groups who I’d previously never talked to.” McDermott’s greatest memory during her time at Schreiber was the senior sunrise, where the graduating class watched the sunrise on the turf together. “The mood was so calm and bittersweet as we approached our last day of high school,” she said. “I remember paying close attention to everyone who came to the turf. People were hugging and laughing and singing. And it was just really wholesome and really real. It felt like there would be no better way to end the year, all happy together in one place.” For Kates, his greatest memory was the unconditional support he received when he ran a Navy SEAL Holiday Card Drive, which he started in the seventh grade. “I asked my classmates to write holiday cards to be shipped to SEALs all over the world. Each year after that, I grew and expanded this initiative, and

this year, we involved every school in the district and collected 3,267 cards, which is more than one card for every SEAL,” Kates said. “The ability for our town, led by Schreiber, to come together and support a cause displays why Schreiber is such a special place.” While their classmates have been supportive over the four years, the two felt there were faculty members who truly shaped their time at Schreiber. For McDermott it is Mrs. Mills, the head of the English department at Schreiber. McDermott explained Mills was the first teacher to speak to her like a person and a peer rather than a student. “And I think that really changed my perspective on the class,” said McDermott. “It made me more open to sharing what I thought, and I felt less like I was supposed to be taught what the books were about and more like I had to figure them out for myself and form my own opinions.” For Kates, Principal Dr. Pernick was the most influential faculty member during his Schreiber times. “He is an amazing mentor and always provides me with sound advice and guidance,” said Kates. “Schreiber is lucky to have such an involved and caring leader.” After graduation, Kates will be attending Cornell University in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, while McDermott will be heading to Colgate University, where she plans to major in environmental economics.

Writing To The Grads By Christina Claus

ylan Forman has wanted to write the commencement speech since he was a freshman at the high school. So, he set his mind to it and did it, which he said is how everyone should approach everything. Throughout his years in the Port school district, Forman was president of the Gay Straight Alliance, has been involved with a number of theater productions in the community and has wrestled and rowed for Port. Forman has been inspired by both his parents and teachers during his time at Schreiber. “My teachers, especially the good ones, want you to learn, whether it’s about their subject matter or life lessons,” Forman said. “Teachers who care about their students have been incredibly influential for me. I have very good relationships with many of my teachers. We have great conversations and I feel very close to them. My parents have never stopped supporting me and they’ve set almost a framework for the person I am today, so they have definitely influenced me a lot, naturally, as parents do.” Forman answered some questions from the Port Washington News about writing his speech.

I really wanted to give the graduation speech in eighth grade, and I didn’t get it, so since then I’ve been pretty set on making the graduation speech at Schreiber. I love speaking and I think I have an interesting perspective because I’ve been involved in so many different groups and clubs at Schreiber and in Port, so I felt like it would give an interesting perspective on high school.

What parts of your Schreiber experience inspired your speech? All of it. I wanted to include memories that weren’t mine alone, but ones that everyone (or at least most people) at Schreiber share. I tried to kind of poke fun at our school and our students while staying real. There’s a part in my speech where I joke about playing Candy-Crush in class, and another about sneaking off campus as an underclassman. I tried to play off of
teachers and Dr. Pernick, our principal, congratulating me. I was honestly in a state of disbelief. I was so happy. It was something I wanted for so long, something I tried so hard to get and I got it. It’s funny because I’m not that great at basketball, but that day I couldn’t miss a shot. I have never shot that well, ever. I guess it was a good omen or something.

There’s nothing in particular that I want to tell them…I talk in my speech about how I’m not any wiser than any other 17 year old, because I’m not. I don’t really have any great wisdom to share. I guess I would just say, “be kind to others and try to spread positivity wherever you go.”

If you could give one piece of advice to underclassmen, what would it be? One piece of advice for lower grades. Don’t look at me as a model for who to be or how to act. Stay humble! I’m a good guy, but I don’t know anything more about life or happiness than the next person. However, I’ve kind of become my own model. I’m me. I do my own thing, (within the rules of course). Follow your morals and your heart, and be who you want to be, as long as that person is true to you. I spent so much time trying to figure out who I wanted to be, rather than just being happy with myself.

“And I like large parties,” said Jordan Baker in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. “They’re so intimate. At small parties there isn’t any privacy.” So, the 2019 Gambol Committee, including co-chairs ToniAnn Nahas, Michelle Alagna and Stephanie Greenberg, threw a large party on the fabled East Egg. On June 21, Schreiber High School seniors—now graduates—donned their sparkling gowns and classic tuxes to strut down the red carpet back in time to experience the Roaring ’20s. The Gambol committee had turned the Black Box at Castle Gould on the Sands Point Preserve into a black, white and gold dream reminiscent of the book and film about Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. “We tried to stick with the idea of being in Port, in Sands Point and The Olivia Alagna and Luke Gellis

The committee wanted to do something that had never been done before, so they changed up the usual Gambol layout, adding virtual reality games and creating communal tables for the students instead of buffet-style. “We want them to think they’re going into a mansion,” said Nahas. “They saw the New York City skyline and art deco from the period. The playlist at the beginning of the night correlated to the theme and volunteers dressed like they just walked out of the ’20s. I don’t think there was a detail that didn’t relate back to the theme.”

hile the June 25 morning sky was full of gray clouds, the Schreiber High School gym was full of cheery faces, with parents
eager to see their eighth grader move up to high school. As “Pomp and Circumstance� played, 409 Weber eighth graders filed into the chairs on the gym floor as parents cheered. Weber Middle School Principal Dr. Christopher

WEBER from page 19 Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Mooney used the wizarding world of Harry Potter as a metaphor to give the students advice for their high school years, asking that the class always ask for help, be kind and face their fears. She then gifted the Weber Middle School staff Harry Potter’s wand, so they can “reflect on the magic the Class of 2019 brought to Weber.” After the retiring superintendent finished her speech, she received
a standing ovation from the audience. Mooney’s speech was followed by one from Port Washington Board of Education President Karen Sloan, who gave the students some rules for being good. This year, Isabella Gevinski was chosen to give the student address, during which she compared the middle school years to games of survival, like Minecraft or Fortnite, and outlined the students’ history of survival: sixth grade was the year of exploration, seventh grade was the
year of evolution and eighth grade was the year of endurance. “Some people may think middle school is hard and stressful, but it is undeniably some of the most important years of our lives,” she said. “Without middle school, we would not be the students we are today. As we transition to high school, it’s up to us to decide where we want to go and which path we will take...Together we have the strength, talent, passion and history to conquer our next journey to high school united and proud.”
After the students came up one by one to receive their promotion certificates, Shields gave the closing remarks. “Students, you have embraced eighth grade and grown as both individuals and as a class,” said Shields, who called for students to remember the new “Be Kind” Weber mural. “This message is simple on the surface, be kind, but can be applied to decisions you make and interactions you have with others in each step of your day.”

A Time In History Paul D. schreiber
I
n the summer of 1917, Paul D. Schreiber was 35 years old, newly married to his wife, Dorothy, and had been principal at Port Washington High School for one year, following a four-year career at Milford High School in New York. After only a few years, he became the superintendent of schools. He was credited with keeping the school district productive and intact, even during the Depression. Under his direction, medical and psychological services programs developed, along with vocal and instrumental music departments. The photo depicts Schreiber at his retirement dinner in 1953. He was a member of a variety of educational groups, and was a lifelong member of the American Legion—despite his delay being accepted, he did still serve a short stint in the Armed Forces. Even after retirement from the school district, he was recognized for his work, especially after the high school was dedicated in his name in 1958. After his passing in 1974, Schreiber left behind his wife Dorothy, daughter Matilda and sister Mary. He also had five granddaughters and two great-grandchildren. (Content courtesy of Colleen Martin. St. Peter’s School Graduates Move On
t. Peter’s School 2019 graduates had a wonderful week of celebrations leading up to their graduation on June 14. The graduates did a final walkthrough of the school, a special tradition at St. Peter’s for many years. Younger students, faculty and staff line the hallways of the school as the eighth graders walk though one
final time. The graduates participated in a Passing of the Torch ceremony, where they lit the candles of the seventh graders, during a special mass and award ceremony, to symbolically pass the torch to the new leaders of the school.

Q&A With Schreiber’s Top Athletes
What was the most rewarding part about being a Viking/ Lady Viking? KG: I loved being a part of these teams because I met so many people who I never would have crossed paths with otherwise. Everyone is so different, but we are all united under one common interest, and that’s what makes being on a team such a special experience. The most rewarding part about being a Lady Viking was being able to play with my sisters. Out of my eight varsity seasons, six of them were spent playing on the same team as at least one of my sisters. It was very rewarding to not only represent our school, but also our family. LB: The most rewarding part about being a Viking was the relationships that I built. When you are around the same people for at least two hours a day, six days a week and three months a year, you are capable of building very strong relationships. These people become built into your lifestyle, and it is hard to let them go at the end of every season. Not only did I become connected with my teammates, but also my coaches. I was able to have conversations with them outside of what happened in practice or the game. These people will always hold a special place in my heart, and I hope to stay in touch with them for the rest of my life.

What was the most challenging part about playing your sport(s)? KG: The most challenging part about playing these sports was learning how to overcome adversity. This applies to softball especially because our team is made up of mostly sophomores and juniors, so being a very young team has definitely been a bit of a challenge. In addition, we have had bad luck with injuries, weather, bad umpires, etc., but learning how to deal with these minor setbacks helped us become stronger in the end because we never stopped trying our best. LB: The most challenging part about playing a varsity sport is time commitment. Playing on these highly competitive teams required at least two hours of work a day. It’s not just a cliche…“you have to put in the work to be successful.” In addition to going to practice, I had to take care of my body, see the trainer, watch film and get rest at night. Time management is a skill
Kailey Gallagher that has to be trained and developed. Over time I got better at it, but it was very difficult when I was younger to come home tired from practice and then complete two to three hours of homework for the honors and AP classes that I was taking. It was tough, but in the end it was all worth it. Especially because it has better prepared me for what I have to face in the future.

What is your greatest sports memory at Schreiber? Walk me through it. KG: My greatest sports memory at Schreiber was winning the first playoff game in Port Washington Softball history. This happened my sophomore season and we were playing against Mepham, who we had already lost to twice in regular season. Despite this, my team kept a positive attitude and never gave up, so we were able to defeat them in the first round of playoffs when it really mattered. This moment was so memorable, not only because it was the first time we had ever done it, but because it showed us all that anything is possible as long as we want it bad enough. LB: My greatest sports memory at Schreiber was defeating Baldwin High School, the perennial powerhouse, in the semifinals of the Nassau County Basketball playoffs. We went into the game knowing that we were going to
Louis Blakeman ability to set the example for others just as my mom does for me. LB: One person that inspired me throughout my sports career at Schreiber was Coach Sean Dooley. He was my gym teacher when I went to Sousa Elementary School, and he was my basketball coach these past two seasons. I have known him for almost my entire life, and over the years I have developed a strong relationship with him. He is not only a fantastic coach, but a great person. I have the utmost respect for what he does for this community, and I do not know anyone else that dedicates as much time to Port Washington athletics as he does. I’m glad that I was able to get to know him better through basketball these past two years. He made going to practice every day enjoyable, and I loved every minute of it. He presented a different coaching style in terms of his emphasis on fundamentals, unity and team bonding. Personally, his coaching style made me push my Who is one person who inspired you throughout your limits so that I could assist the team in the best way possible. As a whole, sports career at Schreiber? KG: Throughout my sports career at his coaching style is the reason that Schreiber, my mom has inspired me so we were so successful as a team this year. There was never one second that much. She always tries to be the best at whatever she does, so I try to be just I doubted his commitment and reliability. He never arrived late, always as motivated and hardworking as she stayed after to talk and was always is. I have always looked up to her as supportive. He is the best coach I ever an athlete and as a person, so being named captain this year was so special had, and I am glad that he is coaching for me because I was recognized for my in our community.
win. Although others may not have thought so considering that Baldwin had only lost one game the entire season and they were the No. 1 seed. We were confident in ourselves because we were the team that served them their one and only loss during the regular season. We thought, “If we could beat them once, we could beat them twice.” We prepared extremely hard for the game, and each and every one of us gave it our all when our names were called. We played hard, we played smart and, most importantly, we played together. In our second matchup, we ended up playing better than we did the first time. It was the 12th straight game that we won, and it felt like we were the superheroes of the town. Through the @portvikings Instagram account, we became the talk of the town. Looking back on it, it was incredible to be a part of a team that accomplished so much.
