Seeing Is Believing Derren Brown proves that there’s more than what meets the eye BY ANTHONY MURRAY

our mind isn’t playing tricks on you, or is it? If it is, then that might be the work of renowned British psychological illusionist Derren Brown, whose exciting new Broadway show, Derren Brown: Secret, can be seen at the Cort Theater in New York City through Jan. 4, 2020. So what is psychological illusionism you ask? Brown has the simple answer for that. “I sort of made it up really,” Brown said. “The title doesn’t really mean anything. I got asked once to describe what I do at the start of my career and I didn’t really have a good word for it, so I said psychological illusionist. I started up as a hypnotist and then, I did close-up magic for a long time like card tricks and that kind of stuff, but it was always the psychological call of magic that interested me more. I was always pulled back to effects like mind-reading and things around the idea of suggestion and influence. “Once my TV career took off around 20 years ago in the UK and when I realized that I could just do that, it became my thing. And then over the years, I’ve spread out and dissipated into different areas, but I suppose they are held together by an ongoing interest in our inner lives, the stories that we tell and the narratives that we live by and so on. That’s something that interested me more than just trying to impress people with tricks.” Throughout his popular television career across the pond, Brown has played Russian roulette on live television,

(Photo by Matthew Murphy) correctly predicted the result of the national lottery in the UK, convinced middle-managers to commit armed robbery, hypnotized a man to assassinate actor Stephen Fry, led the nation in a séance, stuck viewers at home to their sofas and created a zombie apocalypse for an unsuspecting participant after seemingly ending the world. Brown’s big break came in 1999, when he was asked by the UK’s Channel 4 to put a television show together. The result was Derren Brown: Mind Control, which aired the following year. No one, not even
Brown, could predict what would happen next. “The very first show that I did in 2000, I don’t think any of us imagined that it would ever go beyond that,” Brown explained. “The channel repeated the show and it repeated very well, so they commissioned another one. It felt very much under the radar. It was well received, but it wasn’t well known as a show. So we decided to do something a little bit more public, I suppose. “This Russian roulette show was the first one in 2003, and it got a lot of attention and since then
every year or every couple of years I’ve done something like a one-off special. As I’ve grown up, they grow up with me and they changed dramatically. There are specials on Netflix, which are The Push, Sacrifice and Miracles, which was my last stage show. So what I thought now is to put real people through situations where my illusion skills are creating a Truman Show-like environment to somebody who doesn’t know the danger of a TV show and being put through a giant psychological experiment with the chance of transforming them in some way. So that’s what the TV shows have become, which is very far from what I’m doing from the stage shows such as things like Russian roulette, tricks and mind-reading stuff that I was doing 20 years ago. Now, my reasons for doing them has grown up with me and I’ve got older, and other things sound interesting and more worthwhile. I’ve tried to reflect that in the shows.” In order to achieve his illusions, Brown has a variety of methods that he uses, some of which he keeps close to his vest like a true magician. “It’s a mixture of the skills of a hypnotist and of a magician, so what you’re seeing is happening on a spectrum of genuine techniques in a fabricated world of a magician,” Brown said. “I use perhaps a verbal ploy or add a suggestion or sometimes, it’s more physical. In terms of specific methods, I keep those to myself in the same way a magician does, but it’s a little hard to describe. Somebody comes up

FEATURE DERREN BROWN from page 3 on stage, I shake hands with them and then, I hypnotize them. I’m using the bafflement that they experience when they come up on stage. When people are baffled they become highly suggestible and then I suddenly become a figure that can give them relief from their confusion and bafflement. In situations like that, we respond fully to somebody giving us direction in those moments. If you’re using something hypnotic like that, it makes it very effective because you’re exploiting a moment of bewilderment on someone’s part. There are moments throughout the show where I have to work with people at random, but I can construct the show in such a way where I’m filtering for suggestible types of people who are more likely to respond. It’s a very layered process. It really isn’t effortless.” Recently, breaking the record as the longest-running magician on Broadway, Brown made his U.S. debut with Secret, which originally played at the Atlantic Theater Company in lower Manhattan in 2016-17 and ultimately won the 2018 Drama Desk award for Unique Theatrical Entertainment. “I trialed it in England as a ‘best-ofshow’ and then, I did the show at the

“We realized going into this that the show in its full run would be the longest running one-man—now you have to be careful how you say it— but it would be the longest running one-man magic show in Broadway history. The only possible objection to that is Doug Henning, who was a huge magic name in the ’70s. He had a musical show in the same theater, the Cort Theater, where I am, which is quite exciting. It was a musical, but it had magic in it, of course. If you don’t count that, then it’s the longest running show.” Every night, Brown swears the nightly audience to secrecy, which is fitting for a show that’s called Secret. “I think word has gotten around that the show is good and people are turning up quite excited and that’s a really lovely thing,” Brown said. “I swear the audience to secrecy every night and people respect that. On the one hand the show is about me doing the stuff that I do, but also it’s about the way that we live and the narratives that we live by and recognize them. We have the Internet and a daily source of information coming at us and we believe it and we turn it into a story, which is the only way to break down the data of making sense of what’s going on. We’re all trying to navigate with our own compasses and that’s really what the show is about.” Besides being a master of illusion, Brown is also a master of the written word and has written several best-selling books. “I think out of all the things I do, it’s
probably my favorite,” he explained. “It’s actually what I’m doing right now. I’ve just stepped outside of a coffee shop where I’m writing. It’s very nice because I tour every year, so I’m away for months and it’s quite important to find something to fill. So being able to sit and write all day and then come out and do a show in the evening where you just get to be this very charismatic well-rehearsed version of yourself, it’s a very lovely rhythm. I wrote a book on happiness [appropriately titled Happy], which is largely about Stoicism, which is a 2,000-year-old philosophy where they had the idea of happiness where it feels like it’s very resonant in today’s time, but a nice antidote to this sort of self-help version of happiness, which I think causes more problems. It took me a few years to write it because I wrote it in chunks while I was away on tour. I’m quite introverted at heart so it’s kind of my favorite thing to do.” So what is next on Brown’s agenda for the new year? “When I get back [to the UK], I have two months to write my brand new show that I’m touring with in the UK, which is called Showman,” he said. Jesse Malin

here’s a lonely and wistful beauty inherent throughout Sunset Kids, the latest studio effort by Jesse Malin. With his ninth solo album, the former D Generation frontman threw his lot in with old friend Lucinda Williams, who produced this 14-song outing with husband and manager Tom Overby helping out as an executive producer. Inspired by a joint 2017 Rolling Stone interview where the duo admitted to a “shared love of miscreants, misfits, the misunderstood and the mysteries of everyday lives [that] binds them across the Mason-Dixon line,” the idea of Williams producing this project came after Malin accepted an invitation to watch her open for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers at the Hollywood Bowl in what would be the late Rock and Roll Hall of Famer’s last concert. “I had dinner with Lu,and Tom and I threw the idea of her producing my next record,” Malin recalled. “They seemed really up for it, so I told them to let me send them more music before I let them decide. I did that and a week later, Petty sadly passed away. Then there was that Vegas shooting and it was a really rough time, so everything kind of got pushed back. We decided to try and put our toe in the water to try and do it around Christmas time 2017. Lucinda and I decided to try and beat the holiday blues by working through Christmas. Why not? It sounded like a fun idea doing it in LA with no snow. And the engineer/producer/ mixer they’d been working with a lot of years was David Bianco. Funny enough, he had done Wildflowers with Petty and the last three Lucinda Williams records, Frank Black, Bob Dylan and Danzig. But, he’d also done the first D Generation album the first time I stepped into the studio with a major label using a budget at Electric Lady Studios. So we reunited and there it was—life coming full circle.” In between both Williams and Malin balancing tour commitments,
and the latter shooting over to Florida to tend to his ailing father, sessions came together on both the West and East coasts. By the time mastering and mixing took place in August 2018, the loss of Petty was augmented by the passing of a number of people close to Malin including Bianco, longtime friend and D Generation bandmate Todd Youth and the Queens native’s own father. Understandably, these losses reverberate throughout Sunset Kids. “Sunset Kids was also a thing about life being for the living,” Malin said. “Not to be morbid, but there is a thing with music and art that can keep the spirits of these people alive. Songs like ‘Shining Down’ and even ‘Meet Me At the End of the World’ are about finding a way to keep going on through gentrification and whatever is going on in the world—climate change, politics and things that people might not agree with me on. There’s all this negativity and we’ve got to find a way to live each day like it’s our last or best.” Having recently entered his early 50s, Malin is at a crossroads in life where introspection and these kinds of personal losses have yielded some truly deep and meaningful art. The jangly aforementioned “Shining Down” reverberates with lines about “keeping alive the spirits of the ones we’ve lost” while the world-weary ethereal twang of “Room 13” and its couplets about “Thinking about love/And I walked away like those others do” echoes with the kind of gorgeous melancholy you hear on a Williams gem. (No surprise here, given that she co-wrote this gem with Malin and Overby). Elsewhere, the way “Promises” carries a “Wild Horses” vibe to it while “Chemical Heart” is a pop earworm punctuated by perky Farfisa organ runs as nods to Ike and Tina Turner, Bernie Taupin and Jake LaMotta are liberally sprinkled throughout. Malin is nothing if not a fighter and more importantly, a survivor. Born

(Photo by Ilana Conte) and raised in Whitestone, Queens, Malin joined hardcore band Heart Attack as a vocalist/guitarist when he was only 12. By the time he was 15, he’d run away to live in Alphabet City on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. It was the first time he felt a sense of belonging. “It was a place where it was okay to be different and that there were other people out there like you,” he recalled. “When I got to downtown Manhattan, there were all these bookstores, record stores and people. I didn’t get beat up for being different, which is what happened in Queens a lot.” By 1991, Malin and four other friends formed D Generation, a quintet that was a nod to the ’70s glam and punk of The New York Dolls and The Dead Boys, an era that the D Gen members missed out on. Throughout the ’90s, the band not only released three solid albums, but brought back the downtown vibe of 1970s Manhattan by opening punk rock club Coney Island High and regularly hosting Green Door NYC, a long-running party night hosted by Malin and D Gen bandmate Howie Pyro. (“We tried to create a little mini-scene. I took my publishing money and did those two things. I didn’t know what I was doing.”) Always influenced by songwriters like Bernie Taupin, Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen, Malin’s nod to these influences were infused in D Generation and evolved even more once he became a solo artist. For him, the transition from punk to more of an Americana song style was a logical progression. “D Generation didn’t just sing
about cars, girls and penises. I wouldn’t say it was more political, but more social. There were songs about isolation. It was something more lyrical, at least that’s what we thought. I tried to bring it down to a whisper after the band broke up,” he said. “But the connection was always there and there wasn’t that much of a difference as people are realizing now when they listen to Frank Turner, Gaslight Anthem or Dropkick Murphys. Billy Bragg has always known that. Folk and punk is three chords and a message. Johnny Cash. Jerry Lee. That’s punk rock.” With plans to tour extensively into 2020, fans can expect Malin shows where he’ll be seeing what other songs from his past catalog work together with the new material on Sunset Kids. It’s just the latest creative evolutionary step for the measured troubadour. “From the early frontier days of hardcore in New York to all the punk rock and singer/songwriter touring,” Malin said, “it’s all been about survival and reinvention. I wanted to make an open-sounding record with the space to tell these stories. I like to write about characters and people I meet along the way. itches, mutants and monsters, oh my. Netflix’s The Witcher delves into the dark world of the Continent, a place where royals rule, sorceresses exercise magical powers and witchers hunt monsters. Early reviewers have called it the new Game of Thrones. “It’s an amazing world of crazy for you,” Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer of Vengerberg, said. “It was great Netflix was able to support this and how big the set was. As an actress, it’s brilliant to have a world created for you already.” The eight-episode show is based on the best-selling fantasy saga written by Andrzej Sapkowski, which was translated into 20 languages and later spawned a video game franchise.
“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over 30 years writing,” Sapkowski, who served as a creative consultant, said in a press release. The story of The Witcher follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a mutant who hunts monsters and struggles to find his place in a world where he is hated by almost every other species. He teams up with Yennefer, a powerful sorceress, and Cirilla, Princess of Cintra (Freya Allan) to navigate the Continent. Yennefer’s life began with hardships; she was born with a deformed spine and an abnormal jaw. Because of it, her father resented her. Although she is in a constant battle with herself,

Chalotra described her character in three words: survivor, resilient, passionate. “As someone in my 20s, I have a big transformation in episode three, you don’t see the character aging, she stays in her 20-year-old body, but I have to change the character. And through life, she responds differently with what she learned, and I had to think of that before every scene,” Chalotra explained. “It was difficult because you don’t shoot in order, so I was really
leaning on people for her perspective. The material we had, it took everyone.” Unlike Yennefer who experienced the cruelties of the world early on, Cirilla, also known as Ciri, lived a sheltered life as a princess. But she tries to break free of that royal world. Allan explained the most challenging part of her role was portraying someone who had to deal with losing “everyone she loved in one night and the impact of that.” “I Googled her when found out I

TELEVISION got the audition and I saw she was a strong character,” said Allan, who, similar to Chalotra, hadn’t heard of the books before their audition. “I was relieved when I read the scene and realized they weren’t portraying it like she was born and can tackle anything,” Allan said. “You get to see vulnerability in her and I liked that. You see serious strength through vulnerability and I liked that. Sometimes, people get caught up in creating a strong female being physically strong. It wasn’t more important to make it that she battles and fights.” Allan and Chalotra agreed that while they were playing determined and powerful female roles, they were focused on developing those characters. “I think we hear the phrase [strong female characters] so much and I think it’s not about the role being strong, but about needing a broader range of roles for women,” Allan said. “They’re not just playing the same old story line, they’re given a wide range
of characters.” Both characters provided that range and proved to be a challenge. “Knowing I would be able to develop her back story and not just see it through Geralt’s eyes but give her a story independent from that [is what drew me in],” Chalotra said. “To learn that she is more than just a cold exterior. It was a great challenge for me.” The two gushed and joked about working with the world’s latest Superman. Unlike his two co-stars, Cavill was a fan of the books and games, telling Entertainment Tonight he would call his agents every day to find out if he got the role of Geralt. “He was just so enthusiastic and passionate and a gift for me personally to work with,” Chalotra said of Cavill. “He’s such a fan of the books and games and The Witcher and I didn’t know anything about it. He was such a hardcore fan and it was so great.” The Witcher series hits Netflix on Dec. 20.

2019 Year In Review Letter from the
Publisher
Being a newspaper publisher means I have a front-row seat for all the news that breaks in the communities we cover. As we near the end of 2019, there is plenty to look back on. Going into 2020, we’ll be witnessing our local officials continue to grapple with the ongoing opioid epidemic (which our Anton titles have been covering extensively). Other ongoing quality-of-life issues include finding ways to stem Long Island’s brain drain of young people moving to other parts of the country and the continued development of our downtowns. Our team of editors continued to outdo themselves this past year in sharing with our readers exclusive interviews with celebrities, musicians, actors and Broadway stars in the pages of Long Island Weekly. We have also highlighted some of the best eateries on Long Island, shining a light into the little-known spaces and places that make Long Island a true melting pot. One of my passions is the charitable work that so many organizations do in helping the less fortunate. I’ve always been a longtime supporter of the Belmont Child Care Association (BCCA), given the selfless work they do providing a quality education and child care for the children of the working families that keep the NYRA’s thoroughbred racetracks running on a year-round basis. So I was surprised and humbled to be
honored alongside the National Charity League’s Garden City chapter by this most-worthy organization during its annual Spring Fling Hat Luncheon and Fashion Show held at the Garden City Hotel. In keeping with a theme that has guests wearing outrageous hats, I was proud to sport a spectacular custom-made headpiece made up of Anton newspapers (of course) created by our own wildly talented art director and assistant art director, Alex Nuñez and Cathy Bongiorno. As president of the Nassau County Museum of Art, there was plenty going on. Our annual museum ball had an ‘80s theme and honored Joseph Graziose, EVP of residential development and construction for RXR Realty, (who was also the event’s sponsor). With attendees digging deep in their closets for accessories reflecting that decade’s fashions, the evening turned out to be quite the gnarly event as proceeds from this black-tie event went to support the museum’s art exhibitions, public and private programs, art classes, community outreach, family activities and programs for those with special needs including autism and memory loss. I took particular pride in attending several exhibitions this year including “Energy: The Power of Art,” a groundbreaking interactive exhibit with a science theme to it that ties in well with the programs the museum’s education department continues to expand on for the people of Long Island. f you made it to the end of 2019, chances are you did lots of stuff. Maybe it was good stuff, maybe it was great stuff. There’s a chance it was awful stuff, in which case, you should be ashamed of yourself. But what tends to go unnoticed in our personal reflections on the year gone by is just how much of the stuff that we did involved stuffing ourselves with food at one point or another. Hopefully, we’ve all eaten a lot this year. Even the breakfast agnostics among us probably average a little over two meals a day, and that’s not even counting all the grazing, cheating and late-night feeding that peppers the inter-meal periods of our days. Point is, food gets overlooked quite a bit, but its consumption is one of the most frequent and important activities we take part in during any given 12-month period. With that being true, here’s some of the dishes and restaurants that helped make this year as fun to live through as it was bad for our cholesterol.

Soku Asian Fusion, Great Neck The phrase “Asian fusion restaurant” evokes some cliches to restaurant-goers, images of a fad that’s become all too mainstream over the last decade. It takes real creativity to eke novelty out of Asian fusion cuisine, but Great Neck’s Soku Asian Fusion has creativity in spades. Think you’ve had every oyster dish imaginable growing up on Long Island? Soku’s Kumamoto Oysters might force you to rethink that. Each meat has its own specific time in the smoker, and Voumvourakis has it down to a science—brisket smokes for 14 to 16 hours, pork for 12 hours, porchetta for 12 to 15 hours and chicken thighs for about 4.5 hours. owadays, it’s gotten harder to find good, much less great, music coverage. As outlets fold, those that remain and aren’t the New York Times or Wall Street Journal are confusing the act of running weekly lists of hottest cover-band concerts to be the equivalent of writing substantial music features. Luckily, Long Island Weekly hasn’t fallen prey to that weak sauce approach that only serves to shortchange our music-loving readers. This past year, LIW continued to deliver the goods. Early in the year, we sat down with Cracker’s David Lowery to discuss his work taking part in a class action lawsuit as part of the fight for the rights of artists in the face of entities like Pandora and Spotify. “The problem with streaming wasn’t just that our pay was low, but a lot of songwriters weren’t
getting paid,” he said. Lowery also shone a light on the contributions of Native Americans to American popular music via an interview with Alfonso Maiorana, co-director/ co-producer of the documentary Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World. Melissa Etheridge also returned with The Medicine Show, her 15th studio album and the most topical of her career. “I have no desire to preach to anybody. But I do want to reach into the hearts and minds of people and really give hope and find a way to inspire through this [time],” she said.

A sellout crowd of 245 people joined together for North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center’s annual spring luncheon at Glen Head Country Club this past spring. The event, which supports the Guidance Center’s mission to restore and strengthen the emotional well-being of children and their families, was a record-breaker, raising more than $87,000. The joint ceremony and meeting held in Boston on Spain’s Training Ship, The Sebastian Elcano, on the weekend of April 26 was an overwhelming success with both “partners” agreeing on future plans to work and help spread exploration worldwide beyond 2019. It all began on the main deck of the Elcano at a Boston pier with all of the officers and crew on deck, along with the representatives of the Explorers Club (EC). In August, the Nassau County Museum of Art united art and science with energy in a groundbreaking exhibition titled, “Energy: The Power of Art.” Top-tier science and major art by Jackson Pollock, Alexander Calder, Jasper Johns, James Rosenquist, Julie Mehretu, Frank Stella, Joseph Cornell and Man Ray were fused into one dynamic and interactive exhibition. Working with the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Tesla Museum, this innovative project juxtaposed masterworks in many media with images produced by the most advanced scientific instruments. In October, Old Westbury Gardens hosted its annual Children in Bloom Luncheon, celebrating its 10th anniversary at Orchard Hill in Old Westbury. The theme was “Diamonds Are Forever” and the event honored Arlene Levine, a founding member of the Children in Bloom Council and a major philanthropist. Money raised from the luncheon support the educational and environmental children’s programs at Old Westbury Gardens and help children of underserved schools. Angela Susan Anton is a longtime supporter of Children In Bloom and its commitment to educating children.

Other Long Island Weekly interview subjects were hair-metal band Whitesnake, whose 67-yearold frontman David Coverdale returned with the band’s 13th studio album Flesh & Blood, (“I’ve tried to retire more times than Francis Albert Sinatra”) and
godfather of funk George Clinton, who was having second thoughts on his own retirement tour with Parliament-Funkadelic. “The group is so hot right now. I want to make sure that they [continue down this path]. I may end up staying one more year,” he said. Among the artists who are perishing the thought of hanging up their mics are the Reverend Al Greene, who came through and played a rare New York City gig at Radio City Music Hall back in May and the band Chicago, whose founding member Robert Lamm credits the group’s longevity to, “...the songs and music.”

Elsewhere, Stewart Copeland rereleased the film Everyone Stares: The Police Inside Out (“It’s very much the sensation of being in a rock band, rather than being in a documentary”) and the Stray Cats reformed to tour behind 40, the Massapequa trio’s first record since 1991’s Choo Choo Hot Fish. Lenny Kravitz wrapped up his tour for 2018’s Raise Vibration and shared what it was like seeing the Jackson 5 at Madison Square Garden when he was 6 years old: “I was in first grade and I had been listening to their records and loved their music. I was the concert and that was it.” Another music veteran not stopping to catch his breath is Little Steven Van Zandt, whose many projects include putting out a 2-CD compilation of music from his latest Netflix series Lilyhammer, reissuing all his back-catalog as a limited-edition vinyl box set just in time for Christmas (Rock n’ Roll Rebel—The Early Work) and releasing his latest studio effort, the cinematic Summer of Sorcery, about which he said, “I wanted to see if we could create a bit of positive energy to balance what’s going on right now.”

Nassau County: The Decade That Was BY JOE SCOTCHIE

here are some stories that go beyond the city limits, captivating the entire community. From the Gold Coast the south shore and everywhere in between, here’s a look back at some of the biggest news and feature stories from our neighborhoods. In 2008, Barack Obama was elected president of the United States. That meant that 2009 would be a good year for the party out of power. Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi was persuaded to run for a third term that year. In a Republican year, he lost to the challenger, Edward Mangano, by a slim margin. Suozzi, a former mayor of Glen Cove, was elected in 2001 on a wave of discontent over the county’s budgetary woes. He won reelection in 2005 and then ran for governor the next year.
Late in 2010, Nassau County police uncovered a grim discovery. In December, the remains of four victims of the now-notorious Long Island serial killer (LISK) were found along the South Shore. According to police, the unidentified LISK is believed to have murdered 10 to 16 people over a period of nearly 20 years. The victims were found along the Ocean Parkway, near the remote beach towns of Gilgo and Oak Beach in Suffolk County, and the area of Jones Beach State Park in Nassau County. The first victim was discovered in 1982 and as late as 2013 more victims washed onto the beach. Police have had suspects, but have made no arrests. In November 2011, theaters across the North Shore were home to the first annual Gold Coast International Film Festival. The event has since then become an annual event, drawing film fans from across the tristate area to the region. The launch was held with great promise, which has been fulfilled in the succeeding years. Hicksville native Edward Burns was the recipient of the 2012 Artist of Distinction Award. Over the years, property taxes have driven hundreds of thousands of Long Islanders out of New York to low-tax havens points west and south. When he ran for reelection as governor in 2010, Andrew Cuomo promised a property tax cap of two percent. In 2012, that legislation was signed into law. The 2020 state budget, the governor office’s maintained, would build upon the approximately $25 billion in taxpayer savings since the cap was implemented in 2012 by supporting the phase-in of the middle class tax cuts. In April 2013, football great Jim Brown returned to Manhasset High School for an emotional homecoming. “This school formed my life, gave me my foundation and taught me to never give up,” he told an enthusiastic crowd. In addition to the plaque, a commemorative Jim

Brown “Hometown Hall of Famers” road sign is now on display in the village. A Syracuse University alumni, Brown was All-American in both football and lacrosse and a letterman in basketball. The first player taken in the 1957 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns, Brown’s immediate impact on the football field earned him Rookie of the Year and league MVP honors in 1957. In all, he earned league MVP honors four times (1957, 1958, 1963 and 1965). In June 2014, Long Island footballers defeated all stars from New York City to win the annual Empire Challenge Football contest, 24-18. The challenge is also known as “the Boomer game,” in honor of its founder, football great Boomer Esiason. Proceeds for the game, which drew a crowd of 9,762 to Hofstra’s Stuart Stadium, benefit the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which supports cystic fibrosis research. In the late 1990s, Nassau County was roiled by a financial crisis that resulted in the takeover of the county’s finances. By 2015, the county seemed to be out off the hole, but problems remained. Writing in The City Journal, E.J. McMahon claimed that ongoing budget deficits proved that “Long Islanders failed to learn from the mistakes of the big city...Instead, Nassau’s republican machine spent the boom years building a suburban version of the profligate... urban-governance model that almost bankrupted New York in the mid-seventies...The finances of Nassau and Suffolk counties...are likely to experience severe stress in any economic downturn over the next few years. Perhaps then, at last, real reform will happen.” In 2016, former County Supervisor Ed Mangano and his wife were arrested on corruption charges related to a bribery and kickback scheme. The charges allege that Mangano helped restaurant owner Harendra Singh secure contracts with the county in exchange for free vacations and home improvements. Singh, federal prosecutors charged, also sought Mangano’s help in obtaining a loan guarantee from Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto. In October, Singh pleaded guilty to bribery. Mangano and his wife were convicted of multiple counts of corruption in March 2019. On the heels of the Mangano scandals, Laura Curran, in November 2017, was elected as the county’s first female executive. Curran previously served on the county legislature from 2014 to 2017. Also that year, the state legislature approved a plan to add a third railroad track to the Long Island Rail Road corridor between the communities of Floral Park and Hicksville. The project will cost $2 billion and hopes to accommodate anticipated growth in rail ridership and facilitate commutes between New York City and Nassau and Suffolk counties.

nton Media Group featured some of the most prominent names in local and national sports, as well as behind-thescenes coverage of teams and events that shaped a great year in athletics. Lots of local teams opened their doors to our writers to chat with coaches and players about their experiences. In March, former Long Island Nets coach Will Weaver sat down with Long Island Weekly to discuss a strong season for the Nets two years into their existence. They ended up falling just short of the NBA G-League championship title, and Weaver has since taken a coaching job in Australia. In April, the executives, coaches and players of the New York Excelsior discussed being the first professional e-sports team representing the New York area. The Overwatchcentered organization provided insight into its creation, and players discussed what it is like competing as a higher tier e-sports athlete. The team finished the 2019 season 22-6, but did not win a championship. In May, we attended a practice at the Nassau Kyle Busch raises the championship trophy in victory lane after winning the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series title.
County Mitchell Athletic Complex, where the New York Cosmos were in the early stages of their season. Coach Carlos Mendes and star forward Aaron Dennis discussed the resurrection of the team and how they’ve been preparing to recapture the hearts of local fans with how they play. Through their spring league and the NPSL Members Cup, they had a combined 2019 record of 20-1-3. When August came around, NFL training camp got underway and Anton was there to preview the New York Giants and New York Jets seasons. We talked to the likes of rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, Golden Tate and Quinnen Williams as we looked ahead to each team’s respective campaigns, which will end with no playoff appearance for either team. There’s also plenty of other great individuals that got caught attention over the course of 2019. George Steinbrenner IV, for example, talked with us in June about how he was able to form the Harding Steinbrenner Racing team for the Indianapolis 500 and the entire IndyCar Series season at just 22 years old. He also discussed how he may, down the line, take ownership of

PAIRINGS Food and drinks to ring in the New Year BY STEVE MOSCO

o some people, the very idea of food and drink pairings conjures up images of snooty high-brow types sipping from tea cups with pinkies proudly protruding. The more modern day stereotype is that of a bearded, flannel festooned hipster braying on and on about how perfectly IPA’s bouquet pairs with his artisan, grass-fed duck bacon. Well, here’s what I say to that—the tea drinker and the hipster, they are both right. Pairing food and drink for a miraculously complementary bite is not only a taste-enhancing way to approach meal time, it is also the smart way to eat. Think about it. You sit down in front of a plate piled with squares of dark chocolate brownies. You eat one, then another, then another. What are you reaching for to wash it all down? What is the ideal beverage that will not only save you from choking, but also tastes great with a mouth full of rich chocolate? Is it tomato juice? Probably not. Perhaps a nice mug of thick clam chowder? Wrong again. If you said “milk,” then congratulations, you’ve just joined the illustrious food and drink pairing club. It is that very same concept that goes into pairing certain drinks that enhance the flavor of particular bites of food. Whether it’s red wine and steak, white wine and fish or any beer with 20-or-so buffalo wings, drinks have helped food reach the next level of culinary exuberance ever since the first enterprising foodie decided that it was an art worth supporting some 50 to 1,000 years ago. And now, with New Year’s Eve bearing down on us all—and with it, the end of
another middling year and (gasp!) an entire decade of our lives, it’s perhaps the auspicious time to sit down and figure out what food and drinks will drop down your gullet when the ball drops in Times Square. Let’s take a look at few of the more audacious
ways to eat and drink your way into oblivion this New Year’s Eve.
Jägermeister
Have you ever felt like the ultimate golden god, completely impervious to both physical and emotional pain? If you answered yes, then you, my friend, have downed a few shots of Jägermeister on New Year’s Eve. This bitterly spiced and viciously viscous beverage, at its best when it’s pulled from the depths of your freezer and drank entirely in one gulp, is the ideal way to begin your New Year’s festivities. But since it’s a notoriously abrasive drink, it craves a rich food, specifically covered
in sauce. Perhaps an extra sloppy serving of pulled pork with sticky and sweet barbecue sauce on pillowy potato buns. Another great option would be spare ribs or baby-back ribs or maybe even a cauldron of extra dark chili made with multiple cuts of meat.
Whiskey
Whether slowly sipped with the cadence of a regal head of state or furiously guzzled like someone whose New Year’s date just disappeared into a crowd with some other guy, whiskey is that smoke-kissed, woodsy beverage that is equally at home on the rocks or neat. And those flavors of the outdoors are elevated with foods
that are naturally salty, like cured meats and cheeses on a charcuterie board or bacon-wrapped scallops or stone crab claws with drawn butter. Of course, whiskey also finds a home paired with simply a salted and seared porterhouse or rib-eye steak; just be sure to just say no to any thick steak sauces, which would put you back into the cross hairs of our friend Jägermeister.
Tequila
Like that one friend who shows up to your New Year’s party who you just know is going to cause all sorts of mayhem, tequila has the power to destroy friendships, render romantic relationships dead on arrival, and quickly transform minor disagreements into knock-down, drag-out fights. What

does tequila taste like? Mostly like regret, with undertones of failure and hostility. When tequila enters the party, you’ve officially reached the part of the night where you no longer care what you put into your system— but if you absolutely must pair this mind eraser with food, definitely reach for something spicy and acidic, like grilled steak or pork tacos with hot peppers and a squirt of lime. The assertive flavors and heat of the tacos have the brawn needed to stand up to brash characteristics of tequila, especially the gold version.
Champagne
All good things must come to an end. As the final countdown begins and the seconds tick away on yet another year, chances are everyone at your party will have in their hand a champagne flute or maybe a red Solo cup filled with whatever cheap
version of champagne you decided to buy for twelve bucks. At this point in the night, no food pairing is going to fill the void in your soul. And in that split second before the clock strikes midnight, when it’s just you, your drink, and your life’s choices, grab whatever is food within reach, and continue your brave but ultimately futile march toward the year 2020.

While the Globetrotters’ most famous alumni include Meadowlark Lemon, Goose Tatum and Curly Neal, future NBA and MLB players who suited up for them include Connie “The Hawk” Hawkins, Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton, Wilt “The Stilt” Chamberlain, Ernie Banks, Bob Gibson and Ferguson Jenkins. The one consistent factor for the Globetrotters is the larger-thanlife entertainment approach they’ve taken via trick shots, much-loved gags, high-flying dunks and next-level ball handling.

road dog, (the Mule played its 1,000th performance back in ’04!) and has established the tradition of playing an end-of-year set of gigs at the Beacon that’s become a favorite pastime for members of Jam Band Nation. Upping the ante this time around is the fact that this is the fifteenth year in a row that the Mule is playing the Beacon on New Year’s Eve.

the primordial ooze in the late ’90s, they would be part of a New York City-based post-rock scene alongside the likes of TV On the Radio, The Walkmen, The Hold Steady, The Star Spangles, Interpol, Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs, The Rapture, Longwave and Stellstarr. It was the last gasp of any semblance of rock scene the Big Apple would see and amid the fracturing of the music industry, these groups flew into different directions amid live music clubs closing and the cost of living skyrocketing. The Strokes have carried on through five studio outings (the last being 2013’s Comedown Machine). Early this year, the band played live for the first time in more than two
years and while the quintet debuted a new song called “The Adults Are Talking” at the aforementioned gig, any hint of a forthcoming full-length record is shrouded in mystery. In the meantime, this is a rare shot at seeing a group that was poised to carry forth the mantle of their idols Television and the Velvet Underground.

The longtime Saturday Night Live band leader played a major role in Hall & Oates’ backup band, runs the boutique label Green Mirror Music with current spouse Taylor Barton, was in the house band for Live Aid and Farm Aid and has played with the broadest possible spectrum of artists, from Red Buttons to Allen Ginsberg, from Desmond Child to Bob Dylan and Roger Waters. NBA’s top Christmas Day match-ups BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

What Thanksgiving is to the National Football League, Christmas is to the National Basketball Association. The tradition dates back to 1947, when the inaugural game found the New York Knicks downing the Providence Steamrollers at Madison Square Garden 89-75. The Knicks have played 53 total Christmas games (more than any other team), are 22-31, have 22 wins on that day (second most) and their most recent Xmas appearance was a 2018 109-95 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks at Madison Square Garden. The only time the NBA was dark on Dec. 25 was in 1998, when a lockout canceled half the 1998-99 season. A few fun facts: late Portland Trail Blazers coach Dr. Jack Ramsay, who helmed the franchise from the 1976-1977 season to 1986 had the most Christmas Day coaching victories (11), which Phil Jackson eventually matched in 2008. The following are some notable Christmas Day showdowns.
2010
Miami Heat vs. Los Angeles Lakers Lebron James’ first Christmas Day match in a Miami Heat uniform came on the heels of his handling The Decision, which led to his leaving his hometown Cleveland Cavaliers. Plenty of haters felt James was going to get his desserts in going up against the two-time defending champion behemoth Lakers on Dec. 25. Instead, the King led Miami Heat to a dominating 96-80 win over Los Angeles with a triple-double line of 27 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
1984
New York Knicks vs. New Jersey Nets Knickerbocker legend and future Hall of Famer Bernard King left his mark by ringing up 60 points—the most ever scored by a player on Christmas Day. It was a Madison Square Garden record that stood for almost 25 years. Of course, this being the Knicks meant that despite King putting up one of the greatest single-game performances in franchise history, New York still fell to New Jersey by a score of 120-114.
2004
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Miami Heat Kobe Bryant has played the most games on Christmas Day (16), having first played in 1996 and making his last Xmas appearance in 2015. But

this game would better be remembered for it being the initial return to Los Angeles of former teammate Shaquille O’Neal, who was rumored to have been forced off the Lakers by Bryant. The hype gave way to civility between the duo as Bryant put up 42 points, Dwayne Wade wound up with 29 points in his Xmas debut and O’Neal wound up on the bench as his Heat downed the Lakers by a score of 104-102.
1985
New York Knicks vs. Boston Celtics With the Larry Bird-led Celtics viewed as heavy favorites, not much was expected from the Knicks, despite it being the first Yuletide game for their heralded rookie first-round draft pick Patrick Ewing. Boston took an early 25-point lead, but after much clawing, New York tied the game by the fourth quarter. Two overtimes later, the Knicks came out on top 113-104 with Ewing ending up with a double-double of 32 points and 11 rebounds in this upset over New York’s New England rivals.

Philadelphia Warriors vs. Syracuse Nationals In his rookie season Christmas debut, Wilt Chamberlain put up 45 points and grabbed 34 boards. Wilt the Stilt was only getting started, as two years

later he put up even more garish Xmas numbers in a one-point loss to the Knicks where his line read 59 points and 36 rebounds. And yes, that was the same season he put up 100 points against the Knicks and averaged 50 points and 26 rebounds.
1960
Cincinnati Royals vs. Detroit Pistons The first time Oscar Robertson suited up for this holiday match-up, he unsurprisingly posted a triple-double: 32 points, 15 rebounds, 16 assists. The Big O would do it four more times in the 1960s and was the first of five players to post a Christmas triple-double. The other four were John Havlicek (1967), Billy Cunningham (1970), LeBron James (2010) and Russell Westbrook (2013).
1986
New York Knicks vs. Chicago Bulls Michael Jordan’s Christmas Day debut was one of the few times Ewing would best him. Jordan put up 30 points, three rebounds, five assists, six steals and two blocks and while Chicago led New York 85-84 going into the final possession, Ewing followed up a missed jumper with a rebound and a short buzzer-beater to hand the Bulls the loss. The Knicks may have won the battle, but the Bulls would go on to win the war as Jordan would be the victor over the course of several playoff appearances against Ewing.
