Nine Ways To Prevent Maskne Wearing a mask can be hard on your skin

7

Take a 15-minute mask break every four hours. Health care workers on the frontlines of the pandemic have found that this helps save their skin. Of course, only remove your mask when it’s safe to do so and after washing your hands. Safe places to remove your mask include: • Outdoors, when you can stay at least six feet away from people • Inside your car when you’re alone • At home

f the stress of COVID-19 didn’t make your skin break out, the mask you’ve been wearing might. Some are calling this “maskne,” describing the kind of acne caused by wearing a face covering that traps oil, sweat and bacteria beneath it. Before the pandemic, the condition—officially known as acne mechanica—was mostly seen in athletes and workers who wear helmets and chin straps, said Sara Perkins, MD, a Yale Medicine dermatologist. When a mask rubs against the skin, it can irritate small hair follicles, which triggers inflammation and generates acne. Masks play a vital role in reducing the spread of the coronavirus. Masks can also be hard on your skin, causing problems that range from acne and peeling skin to rashes and itchiness. To help prevent skin problems from developing under your mask, board-certified dermatologists recommend these nine tips.

1

Cleanse and moisturize your face daily. Gentle skin care can prevent skin problems. When washing your face, use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser. Dry skin is a common face mask skin problem. Applying moisturizer adds a protective layer that can reduce dryness. You want to apply moisturizer immediately after washing your face. To get the most benefit from a moisturizer, board-certified dermatologist Carrie L. Kovarik, MD, FAAD, recommends using a moisturizer with one of the following ingredients: • Ceramides • Hyaluronic acid • Dimethicone (which can also create a barrier that helps reduce irritated skin) You can prevent breakouts from your moisturizer by using a moisturizer formulated for your skin type. When selecting moisturizer, follow this guide: • Oily skin (or when weather is hot, humid): gel moisturizer • Normal or combination skin: lotion • Dry to very dry skin: cream

Gentle skin care can prevent your mask from causing skin problems. If you have acne or tend to break out, you can still use a gel moisturizer.

Wear the right mask. To reduce skin problems, look for masks that offer the following: • A snug, but comfortable fit Skip the makeup when • At least two layers of fabric wearing a mask. • Soft, natural, and breathable fabric, Beneath a mask, makeup is such as cotton, on the inside layer more likely to clog your pores and lead that rests against your skin to breakouts. Wash your cloth masks. Many health care organizations now recommend that you wash a cloth mask after each use. Washing it also removes oils and skin cells that collect inside the mask, which could lead to a skin problem. You can wash a cloth mask in a washing machine or by hand. Both ways remove germs and other particles. Just be sure to: • Follow the washing instructions on each mask. • Wash the masks in hot water unless the instructions say otherwise. • Use a fragrance-free, hypoallergenic laundry detergent. After washing your mask, check its shape. If a mask no longer fits snugly (and comfortably), it is less protective.

9

Continue the treatment plan that your dermatologist created for you. If you have a skin condition, such as acne or rosacea, it’s especially important to follow your treatment plan. This can help keep the condition under control. Life gets busy. Sometimes, it’s hard to care for your skin as planned. If a skin problem develops under your mask, you may be able to treat it yourself. Visit the American Academy of Dermatology website for tips and skin care treatment (www.aad.org) or schedule a checkup with your dermatologist.

Warm Weather Is Here: It’s Time To Protect Against Ticks BY ANTON MEDIA STAFF

ypically, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that between May and July, people get tick bites and tickborne diseases more often than any other time of year in the United States, but many may not know they are at risk. This year, far more tick activity seems to be occurring earlier than usual. Each year, nearly 30,000 confirmed cases of Lyme disease are reported to CDC, but a recent national survey reported that nearly 20 percent of people in areas where Lyme disease is common were unaware that it was a risk. And even in those areas where the disease is common, 42 percent of individuals reported taking no personal preventive measures against ticks. Other key tickborne diseases include Rocky Mountain spotted fever, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis and babesiosis. These diseases tend to be concentrated in specific parts of the country. Nearly 95 percent of Lyme disease cases occur in 12 states:

Lyme disease is spread by the blacklegged tick, also known as a deer tick, which is typically found in wooded and grassy areas.

CDC recommends people:

Tick collars, sprays, shampoos or monthly “top spot” medications help protect against ticks. • Bathe or shower as soon as possible after coming indoors to wash off and more easily find crawling ticks before they bite you. • Conduct a full-body tick check using a hand-held or full-length mirror to view all parts of your body upon returning from tick-infested areas. Parents should help children check thoroughly for ticks. Remove any ticks right away. Tickborne diseases can cause mild symptoms to severe infections requiring hospitalization. The most common symptoms of tick-related illnesses can include fever/chills, aches and pains, and rash. Early recognition and treatment of the infection decreases the risk of serious complications, so see your doctor immediately if you have been bitten by a tick and experience any of these symptoms. GYMGUYZ trainers assess a client’s goals as they write a fitness program. “Personally, I feel gyms are doing a very good job with cleanliness and tracking, doing the best to their abilities to make it a safe environment.” Mendez is an active member of several local gyms and has been in the fitness industry for more than 20 years. “People have to be smart and know where they are on the health spectrum; if you are high risk, I wouldn’t personally go back, but if you feel great and feel comfortable enough to go back, gyms are doing a very good job for the user.” He explained the thorough protocols that GYMGUYZ follows for its own clients, including COVID information and acknowledgment forms, a

that they can do on their own at home.” It is not even a fleeting issue if someone doesn’t have a single piece of fitness equipment though. The GYMGUYZ mobile van arrives stocked with more than 300 pieces of equipment to use at each session. You have to think outside the box when it comes to fitness aids. You don’t need to spend $2,000 on an elliptical or high-end fitness machine. Mendez said things like a stationary chair, a filled backpack, water bottles, jump ropes and other items that you might already have around the house can supplement any workout.

Clients like it. Do trainers? “We have seen an influx of applicants for home personal training because the climate in going back to the gym is very scarce right now,” said Mendez. “Once someone experiences the luxury of having a trainer come to your home, oftentimes, they never stop. You can’t outrun a trainer that is coming to your home.” GYMGUYZ trainers are nationally accredited with certified personal training certifications. They all go through background checks and are insured. The company provides ongoing continuing education for its trainers as well. “Once a client invites us into their home it’s a different level of connection,” said Mendez. “Developing long-lasting relationships and changing lives one rep at a time is what we take pride in.” He said they like to keep the same trainer with a client for bonding and consistency, but it’s easy to request a different trainer for variety and to break up the monotony. Every session is documented and uploaded onto the client’s profile. Any trainer can very easily pick up the workout manifest and replicate what has already been done with another trainer, if needed. Workouts are not limited to solely inside a private home.

“Our strength in our business is that we can train anywhere,” said Mendez. “We love to train people in their garages, in their driveways, we do group workouts in parks. We are happy to meet anyone, anywhere, at any time.” People save an incredible amount of time when they choose an at-home fitness session over going to the physical gym. A home workout eliminates the need for driving to the gym, finding parking, waiting for equipment to become available and showering before heading off to work or school. During the first session, GYMGUYZ offers a complementary assessment, medical history questionnaire, assessing personal goals for working out, a body composition analysis and a baseline workout for measuring progress for the duration. “We want to know what motivates that individual to be more fit; is it to play with their grandchildren again, to get off medication,” said Mendez. “We want to put meaning behind their goals.” The company is international with more than 250 locations. GYMGUYZ is one of the fastest-growing fitness concepts in the U.S. with plans to open another 100 locations globally in the coming year. ask patients about general lifestyle habits to discover factors that might be responsible for their pain. Sitting in front a computer for hours on end, for example, often leads to back pain. Creighton emphasized the importance of the kinetic chain or linkage system—basically, how everything is connected. “When you’re assessing the golfer, they may have back pain, but the real issue may be that their hips don’t move very well. Or if they have shoulder issues, it could be due to poor strength in their lower extremities and their core,” he said. In addition to a thorough physical exam and discussion of symptoms, Creighton goes one step further. “A lot of golfers have video of their swing that we can assess,” he noted. “One of the key points in assessing an athlete is to be able to see them playing their sport, and in golf, it’s huge.” Although most injuries get better on their own with the proper care, some spinal disc injuries causing persistent pain may lead a golfer to consult with a surgeon. “They come to see me when the pain is ongoing, affects their quality of life and doesn’t improve after physical therapy or an epidural injection,” explained Sravisht Iyer, MD, a spine

surgeon at HSS. “It’s often pain caused by a disc that’s pressing on a nerve, resulting in a problem such as sciatica. But only after trying everything else would someone even think about having surgery.” Iyer said if surgery is warranted, an individualized treatment plan is developed based on the specific diagnosis and the patient’s goals. For many people, that means a microdiscectomy, a procedure that removes a small piece of the disc that is pressing on a nerve. He generally performs the surgery in a minimally invasive fashion, and patients go home the same day. Iyer noted that after surgery and recovery, most people can return to playing golf at their previous level. But patient education is important before they resume the sport. “Golf entails a lot of twisting of the torso, so they really need to strengthen their core muscles and make sure they have good body mechanics, which refers to their movement, posture and balance, to prevent future injury,” he said. The experts agree that it’s never too late to start playing golf. With the right preparation and training, it’s an excellent way to get some fresh air, benefit from exercise and enjoy the view.
