My Thoughts On The Current State Of The Numismatics Market
By Shawn Surmick Ongoing readers of this column will note that I have not been too kind in regard to my opinions on the current state of the numismatics marketplace. Outside of my views on mass speculation occurring in the pop culture realm of the modern collectibles marketplace, my commentary on the current state of coin and paper money collecting generates the most feedback from regular readers. I stand behind all of the viewpoints I present in each and every column and always attempt to write from a perspective that is devoid of any emotional attachment or bias to the topic in question. I also tend to write only about topics about I am passionate, making this no easy task. That said, as a hardcore collector, enthusiast, and investor in classic and antique U.S. coins and currency, it is my personal opinion that the current numismatics market is in a
state of transition. This should not be intepreted that coin or paper money collecting is dead or dying, but there are some vast changes taking place that need to be addressed. There have been numerous articles written within the past two years regarding the decline in the overall numismatics market by experts in the trade, which can easily be accessed via any internet search. Most of this data is unbiased, as a lot of it has been published by some of the leading numismatic collecting websites. Current estimates from the Professional Numismatics Guild, or PNG, place the current size of the yearly numismatics market at anywhere from $3.5 to $4 billion, depending on how we are calculating the total. This total excludes modern coins sold by the U.S. Mint and bullion coins being bought solely for their precious metal content. All in all, the demand for collectible coins and paper money is huge, and I don’t see that number dropping dramatically anytime soon, but what is increasing is the value of coins and currency valued at $50,000 or more. It is this development that is leaving anyone but the wealthiest numismatic collectors out in the proverbial cold. This is why one cannot just look at auction totals and judge the overall health of the total numismatics market based solely on the results of
several highly coveted coins that broke new price records. Another trend that seems to be developing in the collectible coin market is the fact that coins valued at $500 or below across all condition grades are actually selling quite well. The reason for this is twofold. Collectors in this category of the market tend to be precious metal investors as well as hardcore numismatists. Popular in this category are mid-grade and uncirculated common to semi-key date Morgan Dollars, Peace Dollars, and Walking Liberty Half Dollars. An example of a semikey coin that is quite sought after in this sector of the market is the 1921 Peace Dollar in all grades up to uncirculated. This coin can be graded by a leading third-party grading company for around $425 in the bottom tier of the mint state grading category. Another reason collectors are drawn to coins valued at $500 or less is because this area of the market is quite affordable. A lot of semi-key coins can be had for a relatively low cost depending on the quality and condition the collector is willing to accept, and a fairly historic collection can be assembled by the average numismatist at this level. Unfortunately, and it should be noted (pun intended), that paper money in the $500 or lower category isn’t accelerating in value. This helps prove

the theory that a lot of the coin buyers and collectors in the $500 or lower tier of the market are somewhat influenced by precious metal prices. Not surprisingly, the overall market for items in the $1,000 to $10,000 tier has remained flat over the past couple of years. This trend cannot solely be blamed on the aftermath of the 2009 financial crisis. Younger generations just do not have the money or the interest to play in this area of the market, and older collectors who were able to amass sizeable and important numismatic collections decades earlier at a much lower cost are now selling into this sector of the market. This is creating a higher than normal supply of exceptional high-grade coins with not enough buyers to sell them to. This in turn is creating a buyer’s market with a lot of interest only in the most accurately graded items with good eye appeal. Everything else is lukewarm. It is not uncommon to scroll the auction listings of well-touted sales from Heritage Auctions or Stacks & Bowers and see row after row of identically graded coins with exceptional prices being achieved on coins that show extremely good eye appeal. In the graded paper money marketplace, deals can be had on almost all but the rarest issues and grades. As a result, I do not see much upside potential in this area of the market for
market for sought-after thirdparty-graded paper money. Uncommon and historic issues like pre-1900 silver and gold certificates appear to be undervalued at present time when compared to their silver and gold coin counterparts. However, caution and patience needs to be applied to this strategy, as there is a distinct possibility that this segment of the market remains flat for some time. In conclusion, out of all the collecting categories I write about on a regular basis, the hobby of numismatics is and always will be actively pursued by collectors. There is no other hobby that tells the unique and varied history of a civilization’s economic and culture quite like numismatics; and as long as they continue to teach both finance and history in school, new numismatists will continue to be minted each and every year.

quite some time. A question I am often asked is if I am adding to my current numismatic holdings at present time. The answer is a resounding yes, and I do believe in the future of numismatics. That said, what collectors need to realize is that in order for a turnaround in the market to occur, the amount of high quality material needs to find its way into long-term collectors’ hands. Once the older generations are finished liquidating their collections, this is most likely to occur, but you have, in my opinion, about a 7- to 10-year wait for that occur. This time period will also give the younger generations time to enter their peak earning years with the necessary funds to buy these kinds of high quality coins. For the record, I advise collectors focused on accumulating numismatic material that has the potential to appreciate to go after items graded MS-65 or higher with good eye appeal. In an upcoming article I will provide my top tips for collecting and investing in numismatics that have served me well over the years. One segment of the market that should be explored should the beginning or experienced collector wish to invest is the

“Wizard Of Oz” Half-Sheet Leads Heritage Auctions’ Movie Posters Sale Posters From Horror Classics Also Spark Active Bidding During $2 Million Speciality Auction posters in the sale commemorating the legendary musical fantasy film that was produced on a total budget of approximately $2.7 million (in Depression-era dollars), but earned just over $3 million at the box office, a paltry return on the investment. It wasn’t until it was shown on television in 1956 that the film enjoyed renewed popularity and became one of the most popular films of all time and, not coincidentally, became one of the most collected titles
in the field of movie poster collecting. “‘The Wizard of Oz’ is a timeless classic that has become a beloved tradition for generations of fans,” stated Heritage Auctions vintage posters director Grey Smith. “The rarity and exceptional condition of this half sheet, from one of the most popular films ever made, make it a potential centerpiece for any serious collection.” “The Wolf Man” (Universal, 1941) insert is another that sparked enough eager bidding to drive the final result to well beyond the pre-auction estimates, finishing at $96,000. Because of financial troubles, there was talk during the 1940s that Universal Studios might cease making horror films, a temptation that was resisted upon the realization that horror films were the only ones sure to turn a profit at the time. The classic depicted on this insert, one of the rarest posters made to promote the film, effectively revived the studio’s horror cycle for another decade and made star Lon Chaney Jr. into the studio’s new star. More than a dozen collectors made bids for “The Bride of Frankenstein” (Universal, 1935) insert until it brought $90,000. The film shines a spotlight on a film considered among the most important ever made in the horror genre, despite the fact that director “The Wolf Man” (Universal, 1941) James Whale initially had no insert sparked eager bidding to a “The Bride of Frankenstein” (Universal, interest in directing the sequel 1935) insert sold for $90,000. $96,000 selling price. to his 1931 classic,

Radnor Hunt Races Will Return For 89th Year The 89th Radnor Hunt Races, presented by BNY Mellon for the 35th year, will be held on Saturday, May 18, in Willistown Township, Chester County, Pa. The Radnor Hunt Races is a springtime tradition that draws the best thoroughbred horses, riders and trainers across the country, along with around 25,000 spectators enjoying a day in the countryside. Ticket packages are now on sale to the public, with the proceeds benefiting the open space and clean water programs of the Brandywine Conservancy, the sole beneficiary of the races for the past 40 years. The Radnor Hunt Races is a celebrated Main Line tradition dating back to the 1930s. Built on a rich history of horse racing that has been cultivated in this region for nearly 100 years, the races are supported by the legacy of protecting the stunning open spaces that make this region such a beautiful place to call home. New this year, the Radnor Hunt Races, in partnership with National Steeplechase Association and TPH Productions, will livestream each race, allowing horse racing fans from around the world the chance to watch the action. The day’s events include six thrilling jump races and the prestige of $170,000 in purse money, a spectacular antique carriage parade, and the muchloved parade of foxhounds. For
those looking to compete in a themed tailgate competition, the Picnic Patron tailgate offers top prizes for the best tailgates, as well as awards for the best hats and ties amongst the patrons. Celebrity judges will award the top prize in both competitions. In addition to the many different entertainment packages available, spectators can purchase tickets to the all-inclusive Fox’s Den, located trackside at the finish line. “After much success at its inaugural last year, we are excited to bring back the Fox’s Den, the perfect option for those looking to join in on the race day fun without having to set up their own tailgate,” said Kathy Freney Smith, Radnor Hunt Races coordinator. “Tickets to the Fox’s Den come complete with gourmet food, a full beverage service, including a signature cocktail, and a Finish Line view of the racecourse. It’s the
best seat in the house for viewing the races!” Fox’s Den guests have the opportunity to mingle with the owners, trainers and riders throughout the day and access the post-race Preakness party. The races take place rain or shine on Saturday, May 18, and gates open at 9 a.m. There are six jump races throughout the day, starting at 1:30 p.m., with about a half an hour between each race. The W. Burling Cocks Racecourse at Radnor Hunt is about a mile around, and the horses run clockwise around the circuit for two or three laps, depending on the race. Admission is sold in advance only, through Friday, May 10. Entertainment packages begin at $100. In addition to private party packages, a wide variety of tailgate and box seats are
available. For details, readers may call 610-388-8383 or visit www.radnorhuntraces.org. In addition to presenting sponsor BNY Mellon Wealth Management, other returning sponsors include The Bellevue, with over two decades of continued support, Keystone Property and Fox Rothschild. For information about sponsorship, contact Kathy Freney Smith at 610-388-8315. For 40 years, the Radnor Hunt Races has solely benefited the Brandywine Conservancy, raising over $5 million for its clean water and open space efforts. Over the past 50 years, the conservancy has worked to preserve and protect the water, breathtaking landscapes, rich history and active farmland in this region. With the help of the races and many likeminded partners, the conservancy has protected over 64,500 acres of open space, including the Radnor Hunt racecourse itself and surrounding lands, and continues to improve and safeguard water quality, land protection, outdoor recreation and historic preservation in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern Delaware. 64th Shenandoah Antiques Expo Returns To Fisherville Two-Day Event Will Take Place May 10 And 11 Rocky’s Gold, Silver & Antiques in Weyers Cave back in 1986, would happen to drive by the Augusta Expoland and envision a show. And so it began. For the first two or three years, the show was held only in the fall, but by the 1990s, the show expanded to semiannual status. Today, the antiques show that began with the Fergusons along with Raymond and Martha Stokes partnering as Heritage Promotions and about 120 dealers now requires 20 additional employees and attracts more than 300 dealers and as many as 5,000 shoppers every fall and spring. “It’s been an incredible experience for us having the support that we’ve
had over the years,” said Ray Stokes. And now, with 63 shows in the books, preparations are well underway for the 64th edition of this antiques extravaganza. Sam and Mary Ferguson have decided to retire, but the show must go on, and Ray and Martha’s daughter, Lesley Stokes Bartram, has invested as the new partner of Heritage Promotions. Heritage Promotions is tapping their archives to reach out to vendors of both past and recent shows to bring the best possible diversity of antiques and collectibles to the Expo. Advertising in print trade publications also attracts vendors and buyers to Fishersville. This

Nestled in the welcoming atmosphere of the Shenandoah Valley is the quaint town of Fishersville, Va., where 32 years ago, the Shenandoah Antiques Expo was born. And now, twice each year in May and October, thousands of antique aficionados and collectors of all kinds gather for one of the premier antique shows on the East Coast. What started as two Lynchburg couples running their respective small antique businesses has grown into what is hailed as the largest indoor/outdoor antiques event in the Mid-Atlantic. Who would have guessed that Sam and Mary Ferguson, who were renting space at
is a strong underpinning for the show. Of course, word-ofmouth also plays a big part in the show’s success. One longtime customer told the promotors, “Once you come to one of the shows, you are hooked, and you can’t wait for the next one!” “There truly is a treasure just waiting to be found by any and all who attend,” mentioned another. The 64th Shenandoah Antiques Expo will be held at the Augusta Expoland, 277 Expo Road, Fishersville, Va., on Friday and Saturday, May 10 and 11, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission will be $10 per person on Friday (early shopping and two day pass) and $5 per person on Saturday. For further information, call Ray Stokes at 434-846-7452.

Fooled By Fakes By Anita Stratos
fact, experts say that the number of fakes and reproductions now outnumber the remaining authentic Gallé pieces. Some reproductions are honestly sold as “Gallé style,” “Gallé-like,” or a myriad other descriptives indicating that the pieces are not original Gallé works. And some of these are even signed by the contemporary artists who make them. Unfortunately, there are unscrupulous resellers who misrepresent and even alter these well-crafted pieces to make them appear as original old Gallé. Many are so well done that they fool experts and auction houses knowledgeable in Gallé glass. One

known technique used by fraudsters is to grind off the contemporary artist’s signature, polish the base, and add a Gallé signature. Because there were so many different Gallé signatures throughout the years, the signature style alone isn’t enough to weed out the fakes. However, a raised glass signature is a sure sign of a fake. In addition, vases with the Gallé signature and the letters “TIP” are reproductions made in Romania. TIP means “type” in Romanian, and the mark could be near the signature or somewhere else on the piece.
At A Glance Signs of a reproduction or fake: 1. Cartoonish figures 2. Design, color, or shape not used by Gallé 3. Blotches and/or streaks 4. TIP next to Galle mark 5. Smooth, polished base

Referred to by the French as “poetry in glass,” richly colored and graceful in shape and design, Gallé glass was unique for its time. Its namesake, Emile Gallé (1846-1904), was regarded as a highly distinguished glassmaker, many of whose works were inspired by Japanese style and the balance of nature. Gallé is considered to have been one of the architects behind the Art Nouveau period, pioneering new glass techniques by pairing ancient methods with the new industrial processes of the mid-19th century. Gallé believed functional pieces could also be beautiful, and his constant desire to create new effects and designs resulted in many successful cutting-edge techniques. As demand for Gallé’s creations increased, he expanded his factory to 300 employees and became the first factory to use industrial techniques to mass produce his wares. Even after his death in 1904, production continued, and although his signature was still applied, a star was engraved after it to show the pieces were made after his death. Production stopped in 1914 with the outbreak of World War I, then began again after the war ended. The factory closed in 1936, and no further authentic Gallé pieces were made beyond that year. The many forms of Gallé’s work continue to be in demand today, from more rare lamps to well-recognized vases, and many still command high prices. For example, a rare Gallé Wisteria glass table lamp sold at Christie’s in 2017 for $331,500, and in 2016, a Gallé Calla Lily vase led another Christie’s auction with a selling price of over $106,000. There are plenty of fake, look-alike, and reproduction Gallé pieces on the market. In
Gallé cameo glass. As with many other types of collectibles, authentic Gallé pieces are typically a substantial investment. There’s nothing wrong with buying a reproduction as long as it’s identified as a reproduction and priced accordingly. But if you think you’re buying an authentic Gallé vase for thousands of dollars, be sure the seller has a return policy, and have the piece appraised by an expert in Gallé’s work. It’s worth the small investment to confirm its authenticity. Photos via Wikimedia.

Where Did The Term “Sterling” Originate? “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute Sterling silver is arguably the most commonly found form of silver today. Flatware, decorative accessories, jewelry, and collectible bars are all among the many items made from sterling silver. Most people have no idea how pure sterling silver is, and even fewer know how “sterling” got its name. It is said that King John of England (1106-1216) was the first British monarch to recognize the need for his country to adopt some form of silver standard. At this time, there were no banks, paper money, stocks, bonds, money market funds, or wealth managers. Most of what individuals owned was in the form of personal property, and silver was often the most obvious display of wealth. To protect the average Englishman from fraud, and to add confidence to the English silver system, King John moved towards adopting a silver standard. The king hired select silversmiths from Germany to

Finally, as is typical with Pook & Pook’s Americana and International sales, the auction will end with a diverse offering of fine rugs, including a 14-foot Serapi carpet, ca. 1900 (est. $8,000-$12,000), and a 6-foot Bidjar Kilim carpet, ca. 1910 (est. $1,500-$2,000). copper darkened the silver, and the value was correspondingly reduced, while too little copper left the silver too soft and malleable. After considerable testing and research, it was decided that England’s silver standard should be a mixture of 92.5 percent silver and 7.5 percent copper or other base metal. And this has remained the English silver standard, with a few brief exceptions, since the 12th century. Even today, Sterling silver must be 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 Pook Inc. at info@pookand pook.com or 610-269-4040 with questions regarding condition reports; online, in-house, phone or absentee bidder registration; or to purchase a printed catalog for the sale ($40).
