Kempton Show Set For Oct. 17
Antiques Dealers Association of Berks County Runs High Quality One-Day Show By Karl Pass T h e p o p u la r 1 2 t h a n n u al Kempton Antiques Show will be held Saturday, Oct. 17. This quality 38-dealer show is presented by the Antiques Dealers Association of Berks County (ADABC) and takes place at the Kempton Community Center, located at 83 Community Center Drive in Kempton, Pa. Kempton is a rural northern Berks County town roughly between Allentown and Hamburg, north of Route 78. The location is ideal for collectors and dealers in the Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey. The well-lit and newly renovated community center is a great place for a show, and dealers will showcase a full variety of merchandise such as Pennsylvania country furniture; textiles including quilts, hooked rugs, coverlets, and samplers; pottery such as redware, stoneware, and Staffordshire china; vintage toys of tin, wood, and celluloid; and metalware such

Derr Punch Set Sells For $6,200 By Karl Pass In a follow-up to a before-the-sale story in the Aug. 28 issue (Vol. 56, No. 34), a rare Peter Derr punch set sold for $6,200 on Sept. 12 at Horst Auctioneers. The buyer was dealer Greg Kramer. A well-known 19th-century metalsmith, Peter Derr (1793-1868), whose works, primarily lighting, such as betty and kettle lamps, are sought after by folk art collectors today. Working in the summer hills area of New Schaefferstown, near Bernville, Pa., anyone who studies Berks County history knows the story of Derr. In the first half of the 20th century, James Spear was a collector of epic proportions. His book “House of Derr” was first published in 1949. A second printing was done in 1973. It is a compilation history of the Derr family, notably the patriarch, Peter. Spear’s wife was an
antiques dealer and had a shop in the barn on their Penn Avenue property in Robesonia and handled many things made by Derr. James died in 1961. Pennypacker’s handled his estate in a series of sales. The rare and unique punch set was strongly believed to have been used in the shop of Derr. Housed in a wooden, chamfered front, holder, one iron punch is dated “1858.” Derr is believed to have made his own tools, such as these ninepiece hot strike numbering punches. Each punch is handwrought rectangular stock with a forged and file-worked number. The wooden stand is numbered with a matching number. A separate lot in the auction, a wrought iron and brass collar dough scraper stamped “25/P.D/1850” sold for $1,400. On the left is an early 19th-century Pennsylvania red earthenware tree stump bank with a kneeling Native American figure. The name “N. FALES” is carved into the underside. This previously sold as part of the Seamen’s Bank Collection at Christie’s in 1991. On Jan. 30, 2010, through Crocker Farm, it sold for $4,715. On the right is a similar example also produced in Pennsylvania and realized $4,025 on March 8, 2008, at Crocker Farm. A rare Pennsylvania red earthenware Santa Claus bank from the historic Seamen’s Bank Collection sold for $33,000 on May 21, 2005, at Crocker Farm. The buyer was dealer Greg Kramer. It’s attributed to the Neiffer family pottery. The bank was from the late Bill Bertoia collection. Bertoia had purchased it from the Seamen’s Bank for Savings sale in 1991, at Christie’s East. At that sale, many banks were put together in groups of three or four as single lots with very low estimates. At the Christie’s sale, this harbinger of Christmas cheer sold in a lot with three other Santas, a reindeer, and a snowman for $3,300. Courtesy Crocker Farm.

The Wharton Esherick Museum (WEM) in Malvern, Pa., is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition by their current Artist-in-Residence, titled “Jennifer Johnson: All the Time in the World.” On view from Thursday, Oct. 1, to Wednesday, Dec. 30, this exhibition marks 100 years of Esherick’s iconic home and studio with new ceramic works in conversation with the lifetime of creative labor embodied there. Jennifer Johnson uses sustained observation as a way of creating a deep understanding of physical space.
