Delaware Valley Quarries And Industry The Unexpected Side Of Pennsylvania Impressionism On View While rural landscapes are the hallmark of Pennsylvania Impressionism, these artists also gave unusual attention to local quarries and factories in their paintings. The new exhibition “Abstractions of Nature: Quarries and Industry in Pennsylvania Impressionism” at Michener Art Museum reveals this unexpected fascination from Daniel Garber, Charles Rosen, and others who lived through a time of industrial transformation in the greater Delaware Valley. On view through Sunday, Feb. 28, 2027, “Abstractions of Nature” explores how the biggest names of the New Hope School found new possibilities in their landscape paintings thanks to industrial sites. Fourteen artists are represented in works from the first half of the 20th century, including William Lathrop, Letitia Maxwell Ely, Roy C. Nuse, Edward Redfield, Bernard Badura, Walter Baum, George Sotter, R.A.D. Miller, Arthur Meltzer, and John Folinsbee. Some are loans from private collections that are rarely on public view. Active quarries have been a part of Bucks County’s industry for centuries, including mining deposits like Buckingham Valley, a narrow band of limestone and dolomite rock that extends southwest from Center Bridge, Pa., to the outskirts of Doylestown. 19th Anniversary Event Set For Oct. 2 And 3 Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques To Take Over Lebanon Valley Expo Center For Two-Day Event By Karl Pass Diane Morgan Gibble and family started the Miss Morgan’s Milkweed Antiques show 19 years ago in Bethel, Pa., and grew the show into an event. By event, I mean a 200-vendor large-scale show of both antique vendors and artisan craftspeople, and a lot of fun. This year, it is slated for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3, at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center in Lebanon, Pa. Gibble fills the exhibit halls with artisans and handmade crafts and also with antique and vintage
antique dealers selling a wide variety of merchandise. Country primitive material is the mainstay. Pavilions are loaded with everything from decorative items to primitive antiques and accessories, garden, industrial, architectural, tools, and more. There are artisans selling jewelry, clothing, hooked rugs, pottery, and seasonal decorative items, among other items. The mix of old and new works for Gibble. “The small birds would originally sell for between $35 and $65,” reported Scott Tyson, son of carver Paul Tyson. Today, Paul C. Tyson of Royersford, Pa., (1921-84) is mostly known as a carver. On Aug. 26, an online-only sale at Pook & Pook sold a grouping of Tyson carvings, including a group of three small songbirds which brought $2,540. Prices reported include a 27 percent buyer’s premium. Following service in WWII, Tyson entered the family auto business as a mechanic and also salesman. Always having an interest in the arts and with hopes of going to art school when young, when the business was sold in 1974, Tyson took up wood carving. It was the hope and assumption that the auto business would be passed down in the family, but when Paul’s father sold it in 1974, it greatly unsettled Paul, prompting both depression and anxiety that became deep seated, as discussed with Scott. “He really enjoyed carving and eventually the reception he got from customers. He was carving as a job,” said Scott. “He received permission from Clyde Youtz (show manager) to bring a few of his pieces to shows I was doing and would always sell them. This Continued on page 10
