Coin-Op And Advertising Auction Features 1,100-Plus Lots

Halloween Collectibles At Haddon Heights

Morphy’s Two-Day Sale Will Take Place in Las Vegas On Oct. 16 And 17

A five-cent Watling Mfg. Co., Bird of Paradise Rol-a-Top slot machine, unrestored, with original reel strips, award card, back door, and finish, plays and pays correctly, including jackpot, is estimated at $3,000 to $5,000.

The ca. 1890-1910 carved carousel lion attributed to the Dentzel Carousel Co (Philadelphia), impressive at 70 inches tall and mounted on a wooden display platform, will be estimated at $40,000 to $60,000.

Now that summer is in everyone’s rear-view mirror, it’s time to start thinking of ways to enjoy the cooler autumn weather. Here’s an idea: head west to Las Vegas, Nev., on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 16 and 17, for Morphy’s much-anticipated Coin-Op and Advertising auction, featuring more than 1,100 lots of rare, high-quality antiques and vintage collectibles. Several lots could easily finish at $50,000 or more. Among the expected leaders is a ca. 1890-1910 carved carousel lion attributed to the Dentzel Carousel Company (Philadelphia). The painted wood menagerie carousel lion is modeled in a striding pose with head dramatically raised and mouth open, featuring inset glass eyes, carved teeth and tongue, and a deep, flowing mane carved in high relief. It is mounted on a wooden display platform and estimated at $40,000 to $60,000. For one penny, customers could watch the highlydetailed Roover Brothers “Madame Zita” fortune teller automaton dressed in period Victorian era clothing turn her head from one side to grab a fortune, and turn again to drop it down the chute for the customer to collect. She also pulls the lever with the other hand to dispense a fortune card. Many reproductions of Madame Zita exist, but few originals survived such as this one. It is working, with keys, and estimated at $30,000 to $60,000. Music anyone? There is a ca. 1870 Imhof & Mulke (Germany) original pinned barrel orchestrion that had the barrel replaced in the 1890s with a Welte roll-playing system. That improvement expanded the playing options from one tune to the full selection of Welte rolls. This example was played in the Philadelphia Opera Hall in the early 1900s and was restored for the current owner by Hayes McClaren. It is fully operational, in near-perfect condition, and comes with an assortment of rolls. It is estimated at $20,000 to $50,000. An 84-inch-tall, late-19thcentury cigar store Indian figure attributed to the shop of Samuel Robb (American, 18511928) is a wood tobacconist trade figure depicting a standing Native American warrior wearing an elaborate eagle and

By Karl Pass Halloween displays and decor have popped up in stores and on neighborhood lawns even before the kids returned to school. And people who enjoy collecting and decorating with antique and vintage Halloween items are scouring antique shops for more to add to their collections. The Haddon Heights Antiques Center has a reputation for stocking unique finds for every holiday throughout the year, and Halloween is no exception. From now until early November, the store’s special display will be devoted to jack o’lanterns, ghosts, witches, and more. Shopgoers will find light-up ceramic pieces, plastic candy holders, figurines, cardboard Continued on page 8

This 84-inch-tall, late-19thcentury cigar store Indian figure attributed to the shop of Samuel Robb (American, 1851-1928), a carved and polychrome-painted wood tobacconist trade figure, is estimated at $35,000 to $45,000. feather headdress, the raised right arm displaying a bundle of cigars and the left supporting a large circular advertising shield lettered “SUPERIOR QUALITY CIGARS.” The estimate is $35,000 to $45,000. What’s a coin-op sale without slot machines? There is a ca. 1904 Caille Brothers (Detroit) “Big Six” upright slot machine, with patinated nickel plating to all original castings, and the original coin head, back door and wheel. The machine boasts solid mahogany construction, with an aged original appearance. This slot has seen little use and good example for those collectors who value originality. The estimate is $12,000 to $24,000. An all-original, 18-inchtall, one-cent “Chicago” peanut vending machine manufactured Continued on page 11
