World War II Rarities Blazed To The Top
Milestone’s Premier Firearms Auction Shot To $1.4 Million
Milestone’s Premier Firearms Auction chalked up $1,425,000 on Sept. 13 and 14 in suburban Cleveland, Ohio, with a widely varied selection of weapons that encompassed rare and historically important antique, vintage and contemporary productions from American, European and Japanese arms manufacturers. The sale’s 1,206 hand-selected lots included all of the most popular collector categories, such as World War II, Nazi, BATF-NFA, Civil War, Old West, sporting, and more.
The auction’s top-10 list was led by three WWII arms that were fully transferable pending BATF approval prior to conveyance to their new owners. The first was a US M3 “Grease Gun” submachine gun made sometime between 1943 and 1945 by General Motors’ Guide Lamp Division in Anderson, Ind., the exclusive WWII manufacturer of the M3 and M3A1. The gun retained 95 percent metal, had a bright bore, and was fully operational. It came with an impressive selection of like-new
support items in their original packaging: 12 mil-spec magazines, a complete parts kit, 29 rubber magazine covers, an oiler and sling kit, a 3-cell mag pouch, canvas weapon cover, and two technical manuals. It surpassed its high estimate in selling for $40,950.

Next in line was a Naziproof WWII Steyr-Solothurn MP-34 submachine gun, nicknamed the “RollsRoyce of submachine guns” because of the superior materials and expertise that went into its manufacture. This gun from a 1934-1940 production run was based on a design for the MP-19 by the Rheinmetall company of Dusseldorf, Germany. The extensive accessory package that came with the MP-34 included a parts kit, 9 mm barrels, a top cover, trigger guard, bolts with charging handles, a WWII wooden ammo box for magazines, a 3-cell magazine pouch with magazines, a leather case cling kit with tools, and a bag with trigger group parts. Also, the stock was serialized to the receiver and Nazi proofed, which added to is desirability. It settled above high estimate at $32,400.
Rounding out the formidable trio that led the auction’s final results was a rare German Bergmann MP-35/I select-fire machine gun, SS-marked and manufactured between 1933 and 1943. It was built to fire either semi-auto with a single pull of the trigger or automatic with its pull-andhold feature. The design also incorporated a barrel that was easy to remove for cleaning and maintenance. Made from sturdy German milled steel, this highly prized model was supplied primarily to security forces and SS formations. Accessorized with a canvas sling and eight original 32-round magazines, it rose to the upper end of its estimate range, closing at $29,400.
A set of Sowers (Philadelphia) .44 bore percussion Kentucky dueling pistols with brass hardware displayed engraved percussion locks stamped “JON n Sowers Philadelphia” came in an authentic mahogany “Joseph C. Grubb and Co.,
Philadelphia,” gun case. The pistols were purchased from Jackson Arms of Dallas, Texas, in 1964, at which time it was believed they were made by Sowers in the 1840s to 1850s. An accompanying original letter from Jackson Arms, dated Feb. 18, 1964, describes the guns in minute detail and provides considerable additional information about their history. The signatory, Mr. L. C. Jackson, states in his letter that the drum on one pistol was replaced, and with the exception of that repair, he believed the guns to be both excellent and
entirely original specimens of their type. Many accessories were included with the pistols, including a period flask, horn-handle brush, single-cavity bullet mold stamped “68,”’ and more. The lot sold near the top of its estimate range at $7,800.
A witness to the roughand-tumble days of the American West, a Colt Single Action Army Revolver manufactured in 1881 was nickel-plated and adorned with engraved cattle brands and a caliber marking on the left side of the barrel. Its one-piece ivory grips were adorned with “Texas Ranger”
medallions. Refinished at some point in the past, it still presented beautifully, with 95 percent of its reapplied nickel finish intact. Against a $3,000 to $5,000 estimate, the eye-catching SAA was bid to $6,900.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics
Collecting With Power, Nintendo Power!
By Shawn Surmick
Magazines are a niche collecting category in the antiques and collectibles trade. Unlike comic books that have a wide following of collectors, most magazines are not very collectible. The CGC (Comics Guaranty Corporation) is the premier thirdparty grading company that caters to grading and encapsulating comic books. It has been more than a decade since CGC started to expand their grading services to include magazines, and the results have been somewhat underwhelming. Outside of a few standouts, the first issue of Playboy featuring Marilyn Monroe being one, very few magazines generate excitement on the secondary market. There is, however, an exception.
Video games are a relative newcomer to the antiques and collectibles trade. Along with Pokémon cards and vintage Nike Air Jordan sneakers,
vintage video games are one of the leading collectibles that is attracting a younger demographic to the trade. Thanks in part to the fact that most of the popular video games debuted in the 1980s and 1990s, the generations that grew up with these relics are now rediscovering them as adults. This is causing demand for a lot of pop culture collectibles from these decades to soar in value and demand. And when it comes to vintage video games (sorry Atari) Nintendo is the proverbial king.
The original Nintendo Entertainment System (also known as the NES) debuted in North America in late 1985 after successfully premiering in Japan a few short years before. Unfortunately, the U.S. video game market at the time was dealing with a glut of low-quality games that were overproduced by numerous companies for once popular home video game systems like the Atari 2600, the Mattel Intellivision, and the Colecovision. Due to consumers tiring on these video games, retailers soured on the idea that video games could be anything more than a passing fad. Luckily, the Nintendo Entertainment System was a quantum leap above anything currently available on the home video game market, and unique and captivating games like Super Mario Brothers, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Donkey Kong made the system stand out. Nintendo was able to
convince major retailers like Sears, Toys R Us, and countless others that video games, specifically Nintendo video games, were the future and here to stay.
By late 1996, it was becoming clear Nintendo had a hit on their hands and children were begging their parents to get them the new Nintendo Entertainment System for the upcoming holiday shopping season. However, few analysts in the toy industry could have predicted what would come next. Nintendo fever was in full swing, and if your house didn’t have a Nintendo Entertainment System, it was on your wish list. It was at this time that Nintendo had to find new and interesting ways to engage with their core consumers. This was in an era before the internet and social media, so Nintendo’s primary advertising centered around television commercials and licensing deals to bring out merchandise based on their most popular video game franchises. Some of the licensed products produced during this time went on to become valuable collectibles in their own right!
In 1987, Nintendo started to produce a simple but effective Nintendo Fun Club Newsletter that was sent to regular buyers of the Nintendo Entertainment System and their games. Nintendo gained this information when systems and games were sold and the would-be buyer completed and returned the attached warranty card, showing the
company they were a consumer of Nintendo products. Nintendo Fun Club News lasted seven issues, and it was clear that something bigger and better needed to be created to not only showcase upcoming video games the company would be releasing, but also showcase tips and strategies for some of the most difficult games the company produced. There was growing demand for ongoing help for the growing number of players that were obsessed with Nintendo’s growing roster of games. Behind the scenes, Nintendo worked to create a masterpiece of sorts that would rival almost any other video game magazine that came before it.
The first issue of the magazine titled “Nintendo Power” would premier with a publication date of July/August 1988, and lucky hardcore Nintendo fans at the time would get sent the first issue free of charge. The plan was to send the first issue out to as many fans as possible and then provide paid subscription information to entice fans to get their parents to pay for a 12-month subscription to the publication.
The first issue is now iconic and featured an overview of the highly anticipated sequel to Super Mario Brothers, aptly named Super Mario Brothers 2. Many Nintendo enthusiasts around my age (40 plus) fondly remember receiving the very first issue of “Nintendo Power” being shipped in a discreet manila
envelope. Opening that envelope was a memorable experience that is still talked about on video game collecting forums to this very day. Current generations typically cannot relate because they get their gaming news from a plethora of internet and social media-based sources.
Very few individuals who were lucky to receive a copy of “Nintendo Power #1” in the mail ever bothered to save the magazine in unread near mint condition. As a result, when this issue comes up for auction and if it has been graded by CGC (Comics Guaranty Corporation) in 9.4 (near mint) or above, it can be seen selling for tens of thousands of dollars to (brace yourself) close to $100,000 or more in CGC 9.8 condition!
The legacy of “Nintendo Power” magazine and its long-lasting effect on true Nintendo enthusiasts should not be understated. After premiering in July/August of 1988, the publication gained tremendous popularity and lasted until December 2012, being discontinued with issue 285. To the Nintendo fans engaged by “Nintendo Power” magazine in an age before the internet, the publication served as a healthy monthly dose of excitement showcasing upcoming games and accessories that soon would grace the shelves of your favorite video game retailer.
Critics at the time lamented that “Nintendo Power” was nothing more than a glorified advertisement for upcoming

Nintendo games that parents actually paid about $20 a year for. However, every Nintendo fan at the time wanted to get their hands on the latest issue, and I fondly remember getting into fights in junior high school to protect my coveted copy.
Unfortunately, the collector market hasn’t been fully kind to all vintage “Nintendo Power” magazines. Obviously, it is the first issue that everyone wants, and condition is paramount. If you have a copy of “Nintendo Power” issue one and it is not in coveted near mint condition or better, don’t fret. Your copy can still be worth hundreds of dollars. Just as long as it is complete with the included poster still inside. Other early issues can still have value, but the value drops significantly after the first three issues. Still, if you have any old issues of “Nintendo Power” magazine, they are rife with enough nostalgia that they may just be worth holding on to, because now you are collecting with power, Nintendo Power that is! It’s nice to see so many items I had as a kid go on to be valuable collectibles. Getting old is an interesting journey, that’s for sure!

Support Will Aid “An Ecology of Quilts: The Natural History of American Textiles”
The American Folk Art Museum recently announced a major gift of $100,000 from philanthropist and patron Fleur S. Bresler in support of the museum’s forthcoming exhibition, “An Ecology of Quilts: The Natural History of American Textiles” (Sept. 26 to March 1, 2026).
Bresler is renowned as a champion of American art and contemporary craft, who has long supported the American Folk Art Museum
through personal gifts as well as contributions from The Bresler Foundation. Dedicated to preserving and promoting American art and craft, Bresler built an exceptional personal collection spanning a diverse range of forms and media that is informed by her intellectual curiosity and her commitment to supporting living artists.

Exhibition To Focus On Key Works
Guggenheim Honors Centennial Of Robert Rauschenberg’s Birth

In celebration of the centennial of Robert Rauschenberg’s birth, Guggenheim New York presents “Robert Rauschenberg: Life Can’t Be Stopped,” a “Collection in Focus” exhibition drawn from the museum’s permanent holdings with key loans from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. Featuring over a dozen seminal works, the presentation explores the artist’s groundbreaking use of materials and media and builds upon his decadeslong relationship with the Guggenheim.

and variety, quilts have long been a defining personal passion for her as she began collecting and pursuing art as an area of interest in the 1960s. Bresler quickly devoted herself to learning all about quilts, immersing herself in their history and the intricacies of the form. She served as a quilt docent for the Smithsonian system in Washington, D.C. In the decades since, Bresler built a collection of historically significant and modern quilts, 30 spectacular examples of which were given to the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, N.C., and were shown at the Bellevue Arts Museum in Washington. Since 2019, Bresler has generously provided funding for several major quilt exhibitions at the American Folk Art Museum, beginning with “WALL POWER! Spectacular Quilts from the American Folk Art Museum” (2019), and its national tour to The Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, N.Y.; the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, N.Y.; and the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg, Pa. The tour of the exhibition concludes in 2026 at the Dayton Art Institute in Ohio.
Bresler’s generosity further supported “Year of the Quilt” (2019), which was on view at AFAM’s Self-Taught Genius Gallery in Long Island City, Queens; “Multitudes” (2021), an expansive collection-based exhibition that celebrated
the museum’s 60th anniversary and featured 400 works of art; and “What That Quilt Knows About Me” (2023), a major exhibition of quilts that The New York Times named to their Best Art of 2023 list. Bresler also provided critical funding in support of reprinting the exhibition catalog for “Infinite Variety: Three Centuries of Red & White Quilts” in 2023. The landmark publication commemorated one of AFAM’s most celebrated exhibitions, which dramatically transformed the Park Avenue Armory with the installation of 650 red and white American quilts, all of which were on loan from the collection of Joanna S. Rose. When the exhibition opened in 2011, it was the largest exhibition of quilts ever staged in New York City.
As the first exhibition to inaugurate the new American Folk Art Museum, following a planned closure over the past several months for the most significant renovations at the museum’s home in Manhattan’s Lincoln Square in more than 30 years, Bresler’s support for “An Ecology of Quilts” is further testament to the importance of quilts as a foundational component of the Continued on page 10

The MET To Redesign The Nolen Study Room In Its Thomas J. Watson Library
The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced the redesign of the Nolen Study Room located in the Thomas J. Watson Library. The space, which is accessible to the public, will house approximately 5,000 books reflecting the scope of the Met’s collection on new open and browsable shelves. The new design will also enable a flexible and multipurpose space that can be reconfigured beyond a reading room to accommodate classes, presentations, seminars, and programs for students and museum visitors. The museum has selected the New York and Los Angeles based design firm Young & Ayata for the $3 million, 1,000-square-foot project. Watson Library and Museum Archives will close to the public on Wednesday, Oct. 29, and the new spaces are scheduled to open in late spring 2026.
“Watson Library is an incredibly vital resource for the public as well as Met staff and volunteers, and this important renovation of the library’s Nolen Study Room will provide innovative and refreshing design to complement the incredible collection of art publications, catalogues, ephemera and more,” said Max Hollein, the Met’s Marina Kellen French director and CEO. “We are thrilled to work with Young &
Ayata on this special project, and their design will make this enhanced space a jewel among the Met’s libraries and research centers.”
“The renovation and design project is an exceptional opportunity for the library. The plans evoke optimism for the future and reflect our commitment to providing a more welcoming, comfortable, and inspiring environment for library researchers and staff,” commented Ken Soehner, the Arthur K. Watson chief librarian.‚
The Nolen Study Room will replace Watson Library’s former Periodical Room. The circulation desk will also be redesigned to create a more inviting space for library visitors. The renovation will introduce architectural and design elements that honor and reinterpret the existing mid-century modern aesthetic. The original wood shelving will be preserved and reimagined into wall panels milled with a pattern inspired by traditions of paper marbling.
“As so much of our daily access to information has moved to online platforms, the extraordinary resources available to the public through the collection of Watson Library remind us how wonderful it is to explore physical material in the spaces of library reading rooms. We are thrilled to
have a modest contribution to the ever-evolving architectural character of the Met and hope to create an inspirational atmosphere for scholars and members of the broader public invested in learning through the library’s collection,” remarked the firm Young & Ayata.
The Thomas J. Watson Library renovation project is made possible by many generous donors. The Met is fortunate and grateful to have such a devoted community of supporters.
Thomas J. Watson Library is the research library of the Met and is one of the world’s most comprehensive art libraries with more than one million volumes. Watson Library, located on the museum’s first floor, was designed by Brown, Lawford and Forbes in 1962 and
opened in 1965. The library’s holdings reflect the global and encyclopedic nature of the Met with books ranging in date from the late 15th century to current scholarship, in all fields covered by
The Met. Last year, Watson Library added more than 15,000 titles in 65 languages, and the library features rotating exhibitions that highlight its collection as well as new acquisitions.

Fall Carlisle Offers Best Auction Results Of 2025
Sale Was Held Oct. 2 And 3
For two days in Carlisle, Pa., buyers and sellers alike converged for the annual Fall Carlisle Collector Car Auction. Held Oct. 2 and 3 at the Carlisle Expo Center, the event was the last of three on the 2025 Carlisle Auctions schedule and, as the season finale, turned out to be the best-performing auction of the year.
With nearly 450 consignments crossing the block, options ranged from as early as 1906 to modern day and
included muscle cars, daily drivers, memorabilia, charity consignments, and more. With preview hours starting at 8 a.m. on Oct. 1, hundreds of hopeful buyers spent the day browsing the lot, looking for their first or next classic. Once the event kicked off on Oct. 2 at 10 a.m., it was full speed ahead, with all the pomp and circumstance one would expect at a live collector car auction. This rare China contract imported Browning Hi-Power MK1 was made in 1945 by Inglis Canada / Browning-FN. Marked on left side with Chinese characters of the Chinese Nationalist Army, matching serial numbers on frame, slide and barrel, it sold for $4,440 against a $1,400 to $2,000 estimate.

#3, while the remainder of the dollars came by way of memorabilia and will support Landisburg (Pa.) Volunteer Fire Company and Carlisle (Pa.) Fire & Rescue. Further, Harley’s Haven will be given $16,750 by way of a 1952 GMC 1-Ton Pickup.
While those charity consignments crossed the block on Oct. 3, just 24 hours earlier, Carlisle Auctions rolled out its new themed hour laced with nothing but imports. Performing extremely well for the gallery of bidders, the hour offered many beautiful examples from “across the pond,” including the block’s top seller, a 1965 Porsche 356 that sold for $66,000. Finally, while that Porsche may not have made the top four overall sellers, a diverse mix of cars did, including a 1958 Chevrolet
Corvette selling for $145,800 and a 1963 Chevrolet Corvette bringing $127,500.
“We were pleased to end the season on such a high note,” said Tony Cline, director of auction operations.
“The 2025 Fall Carlisle Collector Car Auction featured a variety of beautiful consignments and registered over $5.5 million in total sales,” continued Cline. “We would like to give a huge thank you to our consignors and bidders who make this all possible, as well as our team who work tirelessly to make sure everything runs smoothly. Thanks for a great 2025, and we look forward to seeing everyone again in the spring!”
Speaking of spring, the next Carlisle Auctions offering is planned as part of Spring Carlisle driven by Hemmings.com. The spring event will be held April 22 to 26 at the fairgrounds, with the auction taking place April 23 and 24 at the Carlisle

A Winchester Model 70 .22 caliber bolt action
Hornet rifle, manufactured in 1947, would have been immediately identified by collectors as a legendary rifle known for its accuracy, reliability and classic design. Introduced in 1936, it quickly earned the moniker “The Rifleman’s Rifle” and remained a popular choice for hunters and shooters for decades. The model is
distinguished by its Mauser-inspired action, controlled-round feeding, and three-position safety. Handily exceeding its high estimate, it sold for $3,840. For further information, call Miles King at 440-5278060 or email info@milestoneauctions.com. All images courtesy of Milestone Auctions.

“I have had the privilege of knowing Fleur for nearly 20 years, beginning when I was a curator at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. Since we first met, I have always been inspired by her astute knowledge of quilting and contemporary craft. As a stalwart advocate for living artists, Fleur’s commitment to artists dovetails with the spirit of AFAM’s collection and our ongoing accessions of living artists from around the world. In the seven years since I joined AFAM in 2018, she has provided magnanimous support for a variety of exhibitions and initiatives at the museum, including an unwavering commitment to quilts. 99 years young this month, we are so excited to once again have Fleur’s support for such a groundbreaking exhibition of quilting history,” commented on the gift Jason T. Busch, AFAM’s Becky and Bob Alexander director and CEO.
“Quilts have long held a special place in my heart. I am endlessly fascinated by their variety and diversity of expression and the stories they tell of their creators. The American Folk Art Museum’s collection of quilts is among the most comprehensive and important of institutions in the United States, and I am proud to continue my support of the museum’s ongoing efforts to showcase the artistic significance of this unique art form,” remarked Fleur S.
