American Folk Art Museum to Present Landmark Exhibition
Locating Girlhood: Place And Identity In Early American “Schoolgirl” Art
Pyle And The Pre-Raphaelites Influences And Inspirational Connections Made At Delaware Art Museum Show An exciting exhibition, “Pyle and the Pre-Raphaelites,” brings together two of the Delaware Art Museum’s signature collections: the founding collection of work by American illustrator Howard Pyle and Samuel Bancroft’s collection of British Pre-Raphaelite art. There has long been speculation on whether there was a relationship between Pyle and Bancroft and whether the artist influenced the collector’s interests or vice versa. Beyond knowing that the men were relatives by marriage, little was known about the extent to which they were connected. New research reveals the men were far more intertwined than previously recognized and that Pyle was inspired by the PreRaphaelites before Bancroft Continued on page 8

This fall, the American Folk Art Museum presents “Locating Girlhood: Place and Identity in Early American “Schoolgirl” Art, a major exhibition bringing together works from across the field. Presented during the nation’s semiquincentennial, “Locating Girlhood” reexamines the often overlooked artistic production of girls and young women in 18th- and 19th-century America, highlighting their sustained engagement with representations of place long before the emergence of more widely recognized traditions of American landscape art. Drawing on loans from institutions and private collections across the United States and Canada, the exhibition offers one of the most significant explorations of early American girls’ artistic achievement ever assembled. This important show will be held from Oct. 9 to Feb. 28, 2027. “ T h e A m e r i c a n Fo l k A r t Museum has long championed the creative achievements of American girls and young women,” said Jason T. First, Adam Zurn of Uncharted Lancaster will present “Legendary Tales from the Mighty Susquehanna River.” After Adam’s presentation, Benton Webber will host his “Revolutionary Lancaster Quiz Bowl.” Questions and answers will be in a Quiz Bowl format with teams of four being created.
