Elverson Antiques Show To Be Held Oct. 31 And Nov. 1

Second Bloom Antiques

Honey Brook Elementary School Hosts Quality Event Mark your calendars now for the fall 2026 Elverson Antiques Show to be held on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, at the Honey Brook Elementary School, located at 1530 W. Walnut St., Honey Brook, Pa. The school offers a convenient location with accessible parking and a layout that allows customers to easily stroll

through the gym, cafeteria, lobby, and adjoining hallways while shopping. At its inception more than 50 years ago, the Elverson Antiques Show was a fundraiser for the local fire company. Since then, the fire company relocated and took their fundraising in another direction. At that time, the show managers

found a new home for the show at the Twin Valley High School. There have been other changes over the years, but the partnership with the local school district remains. Today, the Twin Valley School District helps to support the show by providing facilities, support staff, and student volunteers. In return, the school district receives

a donation from the proceeds of the show. Throughout this long history, the show has evolved from that local fundraiser to a nationally recognized antiques show. While dealers from Pennsylvania make up the majority of the roster, dealers from New England, the Midwest and as far away as Florida are represented. The result is a mix of quality antiques covering a variety of categories, such as textiles, including quilts, coverlets, and samplers; folk art of many forms; ceramics such as stoneware, redware, and a variety of Staffordshire china; woodenware; jewelry; paintings; baskets; country primitives; early lighting; furniture; carvings; fraktur; early advertising; and more. The dealers are friendly and prices are affordable. This is a Continued on page 13

Grand Opening Draws A Crowd And Is A Big Hit On Sept. 3, Second Bloom Antiques opened its doors in Monmouth Junction, N.J., welcoming more than 150 people during its opening day events. Second Bloom is more than an antiques store. It is a part of a growing shift toward destination shopping. Places that offer not only things to buy, but an experience worth spending time in. Located inside the historical barn at Carrefour Gardens, 981 Georges Road in Monmouth Junction, Second Bloom sits within a nursery filled with gardens, waterfalls and winding spaces to explore. Visitors can stroll the tranquil grounds, stop for a game of outdoor chess, browse antiques and collectibles, discover the bookshop nook, shop at the farmers market, view work by local artists, take an art class, or wander the variety of unique plants and seasonal offerings. The space also hosts events, lectures and classes, as well as food trucks. “It’s a place to wander. To discover something old, something growing, something handmade, something unexpected,” said Maureen Bodnar. Joe and Maureen Bodnar of Bodnar’s Auction are a part of this vision. “We’re still growing into what Second Bloom Continued on page 13

Late Medieval European Blockbooks Exhibit Explores Pivotal Moment In Book History The Morgan Library & Museum will present “Graphic Devotions: Late Medieval European Blockbooks,” an exhibition that explores a pivotal 30-year period in European book history, from 1450 to 1480, when growing demand for books spurred innovation and experimentation in their production. Featuring 20 bound works plus five prints, the exhibition is the first in the United States devoted exclusively to blockbooks. It will be on view from Friday, Nov. 6, through May 16, 2027. Blockbooks, sometimes described as medieval graphic

novels, are highly illustrated books printed entirely from woodblocks, with both text and images carved into the same blocks. While some blockbooks adapted texts and imagery from contemporary manuscripts, block cutters and printers generally created new texts specifically suited to the medium, allowing words and images to work together in an innovative and accessible format. First produced in the Low Countries and the Lower Rhine region in the mid-1450s and 1460s, blockbooks gained popularity in southern Germany from the 1460s until

1480. Although the woodcuts can appear comparatively simple or stylized by modern standards, the concept of creating books from ready-made woodblocks was revolutionary in Europe. In a sense, these blocks enabled an early form of “print on demand.” Once the text and images had been carved, copies could be produced as needed, offering a new way to reproduce books for a growing audience. Although woodblock printing had long been practiced in Asia, its use for books in Europe represented a significant development in the history of the medium.

Ultimately, the labor-intensive process of printing books from woodblocks was surpassed by the efficiencies and capabilities of typographic printing, and the blockbook tradition largely disappeared by 1480. As a result, surviving examples are exceedingly rare. Their brief history represents a pivotal transitional moment in European book culture, bridging the traditions of handmade manuscripts and the emerging world of printed books. The Morgan holds the largest collection of blockbooks in the Continued on page 15

Where There’s Smoke: Smoking Heads Ashtrays Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson Ashtrays. Once upon a time, they were a necessity of life. During most of the mid20th century, if you had company over and no ashtrays were handy, you could pretty much prepare yourself to later find stubbed-out cigarettes in the candy dish, doused cigarettes in nearly-empty bar glasses, and, every now and then, a tiny cigarette burn on the carpet. So, ashtrays were a necessary evil. Most giftware companies of the 1950s and ‘60s produced at least a few ashtrays, and designers ranged from Sascha Brastoff to Michael and Frances Higgins. The ashtrays came in all sizes, shapes, colors, and compositions.
