“State Fairs: Growing American Craft”
Special Exhibit Explores The Stories Of Craft Artists At The Fairgrounds S ta te fa i rs h ave s pa r ke d the American imagination with their celebrations of agricultural bounty, mechanical innovations and skilled handcrafts since the first fair was held in 1841 in upstate New York. Craft has always been an essential element of state fairs and Native American tribal fairs, expressing the creative and practical values of handmade goods in American society. State fairs enable artists to display and sell their work and help sustain unique regional and cultural traditions. “State Fairs: Growing American Craft” will occupy both floors of the Renwick Gallery, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s branch location for contemporary craft, from Aug. 22, 2025 to Sept. 7, 2026. It is the first exhibition dedicated to artists’ contributions to
the great U.S. tradition of state fairs. With more than 240 artworks on view, dating from the mid-19th century to the present, this exhibition registers the many ways the craft of state fairs has enriched the lives of artists and deepened the understanding of American art. The exhibition is the culmination of five years of on-the-ground research involving visits to 15 state fairs across the U.S.; collaborative projects with artists in Kentucky, New Jersey, Alaska, West Virginia and Utah; and research in several state historical societies, history museums and archives. Artists and 4-H clubs from 43 states and tribal nations are represented, with all 50 states represented in a photo gallery. “‘State Fairs’ showcases what

Carlisle Truck Nationals Nearly 3,000 Rides Converged Onto Fairgrounds For truck lovers, there are events that serve up what they are looking for, but it’s possible there is no bigger all-encompassing truck show than the Carlisle Truck Nationals. While its position as a large-scale event can be debated across the country, there’s no denying that this show is king amongst its passionate fan base in Carlisle and, for that matter, on the East Coast. In fact, from Aug. 1 to 3 at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Pa., 2,994 trucks populated the event, making it the largest-ever Carlisle Truck Nationals; a record that’s now been set, or re-set, five Continued on page 6

Shows on view in FY25 that contributed to the strong attendance include the critically acclaimed summer exhibitions “Sargent and Paris,” which had attracted over 427,000 visitors to date, and “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” (through Oct. 26), which so far has welcomed more than 291,000 guests. Other exhibitions that drew high attendance included “Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature” (with 300,000 visitors); “Siena: The Rise of Painting, 1300-1350” (298,000); and the last months of “The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism” (464,000) and “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” (401,000). This year, 42 percent of visitors benefited from the museum’s implementation of new, more expedited ways to enter the museum’s galleries. In addition to its already-active online ticket sales and scannable membership cards, The Met recently introduced an online ticketing option for New York State residents to reserve paywhat-you-wish tickets from the museum’s website. The Met offers tens of thousands of free classes, conversations, music, dance and performance programs each year that make art accessible to intergenerational audiences from New York City and beyond. Museum-wide public programming remained popular with audiences, including the annual Lunar New Year Festival (which drew 19,300), the opening festival for The Michael C. Rockefeller Wing (18,000), Museum Mile Festival (10,960), and the Museum’s inaugural Fall Festival (10,260). The Met additionally welcomed 184,945 K-12 students to participate in school tours and workshops, and over 200,000 children and their caregivers enjoyed the museum’s 81st Street Studio science and art play space.
