A Brief History Of The Passenger Pigeon Comes To Auction On Thursday, Dec. 12, at its Fine and Decorative Arts Auction, Alderfer Auctions will offer to the highest bidder a display case containing various items used to trap pigeons in the mid-19th century, items such as a whistle, cord and other tools to make nets to trap pigeons. The pigeons that were being trapped were not the pigeons that get fed in a park but the passenger pigeon, a migratory pigeon indigenous to North America that numbered in the billions in the 19th century. This bird became a cheap and readily available source of food that could be shipped from the countryside to growing urban centers. In the 19th century, the trapping/hunting of these birds was commercialized to meet demand. As most people know, under extreme pressure on the species as well as deforestation of the pigeon’s breeding and nesting grounds, their population numbers plummeted to extinction. The last known surviving passenger pigeon died on Sept. 1, 1914. Many of the items in the case belonged to Jacob Weisel (1802-84), a pigeon/trapper that lived in north Williamsport, Pa. Documentation states that many of these items were used in the 1850s. The items themselves were collected by Charles H. Eldon (1852-1930),

a taxidermist from Williamsport. Eldon mounted these items for display and presented them to Henry Wharton Shoemaker (18801958) several years after the last passenger pigeon had died. Shoemaker was a Pennsylvania “renaissance” man who excelled as a writer, folklorist, historian, diplomat, and soldier. Shoemaker espoused Teddy Roosevelt’s theories on conservation and was well known in his own right for supporting various conservation initiatives in Pennsylvania. The 19th-century framed grouping of pigeon capture relics will be sold during Alderfer’s sale held live and online. Alderfer’s is located at 501 Fairgrounds Road, Hatfield, Pa. original prototypes for the rocket-firing Boba Fett action figure, and, as a result, two versions were produced. The first was the much more common L-slot version, of which there are believed to be at least 80 in existence. The second version produced is by far the rarest, the J-slot version, of which about 20 known examples are believed to exist. Kenner Toys would cancel the rocket-firing Boba Fett action figure and replace it with a standard action figure. Ironically with close to 100 vintage rocket firing Boba Fett prototype action figures

clear that “Star Wars” would go on to become a pop culture phenomenon. The first movie had soared past box office projections, and Kenner Toys was running high due to its lucrative licensing deal that allowed them to produce toys and action figures based on the franchise. Meanwhile, George Lucas was already placing the movie’s first sequel, called “The Empire Strikes Back,” into production. On Nov. 17, 1978, the now forgettable animated show titled “The Star Wars Holiday Special” would air on CBS. This particular animated show would be used to highlight a new character in the “Star Wars” universe, Boba Fett. It would also be leaked at this time that the character would serve as part of a major plot line for the upcoming sequel. As a result of the upcoming popularity of the character, Kenner Toys wanted to do a promotion based on the character in question. When Kenner Toys saw the original designs of the character, the idea to produce a rocket-firing version with a miniature firing projectile that could be fired from the character’s backside began. Unfortunately, it was at this time in the toy industry that Mattel was facing serious backlash and lawsuits due to the release of its “BattleStar Galactica” toy line that featured rocket firing projectiles. This caused Kenner to take caution when designing the
Wars” rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype action figure, which he sold for less than $20,000. Speculators should use extreme caution before buying items of this nature and assuming that prices will continue to rise exponentially for these collectibles. Within a few weeks, the last of the newest “Star Wars” films will be released into movie theaters, so the force may not always be with buyers of these kinds of items going forward.
R050725
On Nov. 7, Hake’s Auction in York, Pa., produced a n o t h e r record-breaking sale when it sold a rare vintage “Star Wars” rocket firing Boba Fett prototype action figure graded by AFA (Action Figure Authority) in 85+ condition (near mint plus). The final sale price of the item was $185,850, which included the 18 percent buyer’s premium. This particular rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype action figure was the coveted J-slot version. The market for extremely rare vintage toys has been on fire lately, with several recordbreaking auctions coming out of the vintage Kenner “Star Wars” toy line. It should be noted that just a few months back in July, Hake’s Auction sold another vintage rocketfiring Boba Fett prototype action figure for what was then a record breaking price. That particular version was a more common but still extremely scarce L-slot version, which sold for a final price of $112,926, which includes the 18 percent buyer’s premium. Ironically, the overall market for vintage “Star Wars” toys and collectibles has softened over the past few years. Vintage “Star Wars” toys were considered extremely sought after during the initial announcement made back in the fall of 2012, when Disney announced it had acquired the rights to the entire LucasFilm franchise. Disney’s “Star Wars: Episode 7: The Force Awakens” would be released toward the end of 2015. “Star Wars” enthusiasts were ecstatic, as were toy collectors who assumed that prices would rise dramatically for most high grade vintage “Star Wars” toys
and collectibles. From 2012 to 2015, the market for vintage “Star Wars” toys and related collectibles saw exponential gains. However, when the movie “The Force Awakens” was released in 2015, it caused the diehards to pause and take notice. A lot of “Star Wars” enthusiasts were split on the film. Some thought it was a great follow-up to the original “Star Wars” trilogy, while others thought it was nothing more than a cash grab orchestrated by a money hungry corporate conglomerate. Making matters worse, Disney put into production several more “Star Wars” films that divided audiences further. Both “Star Wars: Rogue One” and “ Solo” continued to split hardcore enthusiasts. As a result, many collectors and enthusiasts are still suffering “Star Wars” fatigue. This has caused prices for a lot of more common vintage “Star Wars” collectibles to soften. Meanwhile, the market for the rarest and most coveted vintage “Star Wars” products continues to rise. This is what is driving demand for collectibles like the coveted vintage rocket-firing Boba Fett prototype action figure. The figure, which is based on one of the most popular characters in the “Star Wars” universe, had a unique history to say the least. The history behind this particular action figure is what adds to its allure and charm. Back in 1978, it was quite

in existence, for a so-called prototype item, these are not as rare as other prototype vintage toys on the market today. It is the popularity of the character and the allure of the history of this rare collectible that makes this item sell for what it does on the secondary market today. It should also be noted that up until just a few years ago it was possible to buy the L-slot version of the rocketfiring Boba Fett prototype action figure for less than $20,000 in near mint condition. In fact, when the now cult classic reality based television show “Toy Hunter” debuted on the Travel Channel back in 2012, one of the things the host of the show discovered on the first episode is a vintage “Star

maintained a friendly correspondence with Mucha’s family,” said Soulis. “His extensive archive of papers indicates that the Mucha family often sought his opinion on matters of authentication. He was extremely knowledgeable and highly regarded in art circles.” Top entries from the Mucha collection include classic, lifesize lithograph posters of famed stage actresses of the turn of the 20th century. One is a dramatic portrayal of Sarah Bernhardt in the Greek tragedy “Medee (Medea),” staged in 1898 at Le Theatre de la Renaissance in Paris. Another highlight, a Mucha poster printed in the United States in 1908, depicts the American Sarah Bernhardt, actress Caroline Dudley, who intentionally used the stage name “Mrs. Leslie Carter” following an acrimonious divorce. The 89.5-inch-tall Art Nouveau poster of Carter in the play “Kassa” is estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Robert Haas also had an interest in the work of American artist Rose O’Neill (1874-1944) and was even an officer of the International Rose O’Neill Club Foundation. Although O’Neill was best known for the endearing Kewpie characters that brought her fame and fortune, she was also a “serious” artist who mixed fantasy characters with allegorical themes. The Haas collection includes 10 mixed media on paper works by O’Neill that were exhibited in Paris in 1921 and later at the Brandywine River Museum of Art. Her ink-and-watercolor work “Perseus with the Head The Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1860- of Medusa,” ca. 1900-20, is 1939) lithograph poster in colors with estimated at $3,000-$5,000. gold embossing, ca. 1928, created for The auction is impressive The Slav Epic exhibition of 1930, in its breadth, with fine con46.5-by-30 inches (sight), from the signments of American, estate of Robert Allan Haas, will be European, Midwest regional estimated at $8,000-$10,000. paintings, watercolors, pencilsigned prints and bronzes from several Midwestern estates and collections. A collection of superb Alphonse Mucha period graphics from the estate of Hallmark Cards senior master artist Robert Allan Haas (19502018) is the centerpiece of Dirk Soulis’ much-anticipated Winter Fine Art Auction on Saturday, Dec. 7. Approximately 60 of the sale’s 210 lots come from the prestigious Haas collection. Many of the works are quite rare and were exhibited at Hallmark’s headquarters and at eight U.S. galleries as part of a traveling museum exhibition from 1998 through the early 2000s. It is an important collection, said auctioneer Dirk Soulis, not only because of its inherent quality but also because Haas was an eminent scholar and authority on the subject of Alphonse Mucha (Czech, 1860-1939). “Robert Haas discovered Alphonse Mucha while a student at the Ringling College of Art and Design. Throughout his life as he pursued examples of period art by Mucha, he also

FEB. 14, 1854,” .41 rocket ball caliber, in extremely fine condition, sold for $35,670. the day of our auction.” The buyer of the gun, an individual who wishes to remain anonymous, has arranged for it to be publicly displayed at the National Museum of Military Vehicles, which is currently under construction in Dubois, Wyo. The $100 million, 140,000-squarefoot museum will open in May 2020 to serve as the permanent home for 150 historic war vehicles and a $10 million historic weapons collection that includes a rifle fired at Custer’s Last Stand and a pistol used by Gen. John J. Pershing in World War I. For more on the Bunker Hill gun, see “Antiques & Auction News, Nov. 15, 2019, Vol. 50, No. 46.”
The Colt 1847 Walker A Company No. 181 percussion revolver, one of only 1,000 made to arm mounted troops for the war in Mexico, authenticated by the Texas Gun Collectors Association, sold for $153,750.
The Bunker Hill gun sold for nearly $200,000 more than its high estimate. Its price reflected a pattern seen throughout the auction, in which rare and historically important firearms met or exceeded expectations. For example, a ca. 1850 relief gold-inlaid and engraved percussion shotgun made by Keozi & Jahchimek of Warsaw and Krakow, presented in its original rosewood case with accessories, sold for $270,000 against an estimate of $90,000-$120,000. A handgun of the Old West, a Colt 1847 Walker A Company No. 181 percussion revolver, one of only 1,000
made to arm mounted troops for the war in Mexico, came to auction with an $80,000$120,000 estimate. Authenticated by the Texas Gun Collectors Association, it attracted strong interest and sold for $153,750. A second significant Texas gun, a J.H. Dance & Bros. Confederate Army revolver, was described in Morphy’s catalog as “desirable, hard to find” and one of about 100 survivors of its type. Depicted in the Gary Wiggins book “Dance & Brothers, Texas Gunmakers of the Confederacy,” the .44-caliber revolver sold for an aboveestimate $63,000. Another rare discovery of the Civil War period, a canvas belt with two Confederate Morse carbine cartridge boxes, complete with tin tubes designed to house cartridges, came with an accompanying note that reads, in part, “Found in old Morse Packing Box by W.A. Floyd at Pendleton, South Carolina….” The belt and boxes are shown on pages 146-147 of the 1978 book “Confederate Longarms and Pistols” by Hill and Anthony, which added to its appeal to collectors. Estimated at $6,000-$8,000,
A relief gold-inlaid and engraved percussion shotgun by Keozi & Jahchimek of Warsaw and Krakow, ca. 1850, presented in its original highly embellished rosewood case with accessories, sold for $270,000 against an estimate of $90,000-$120,000.

the lot realized $22,800. Antique machine guns, whose resale is strictly controlled and requires BATF approval prior to transfer, continue to achieve top prices at auction as “curios and relics.” One of the finest examples in Morphy’s sale, a World War II German 9mm Erma dual-magazine-housing MP40/II machine gun with Erma, Krupp and numerous Nazi proofs, sold above its estimate range for $102,000. A Marlin-manufactured and Numrich Arms Company-registered M2 submachine gun, the U.S. military successor to M2A2 Thompson Marlin, rose to $52,275 (estimate: $30,000$35,000), while a British Two complete Confederate Morse carbine cartridge boxes, each holding 12 tin Vickers Model 1912 .303-caltubes, suspended on canvas belt with iron buckle, and published in the 1978 iber machine gun made for book “Confederate Longarms and Pistols” by Hill & Anthony, realized $22,800. the El Salvador government,
accompanied by its rare original commercial tripod, made $47,970 (estimate: $12,500-$20,000). Other noteworthy lots included a 1950 J. Purdey & Sons (London) .410 bore game shotgun, 28in barrel, with original case with accessories, $51,660, and an extremely fine .41 rocket ball caliber Navysize pistol, marked “THE VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS CO. PATENT NEW HAVEN CONN. FEB. 14, 1854,” sold for $35,670. All prices quoted are inclusive of buyer’s premium as detailed on Morphy Auctions’ website. On Oct. 23, Morphy Auctions sold the widely acclaimed gun that fired the first shot at the 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill for $492,000. The company’s Extraordinary Firearms Auction, held over two days, Oct. 22 and 23, attracted worldwide media interest and grossed more than $10 million. The auction headliner, a .79-caliber Dutch flintlock musket that originally belonged to Private John Simpson of Deerfield, N.H., had passed by descent through subsequent generations of the patriot’s family for 244 years. It came to Morphy’s with impeccable provenance and a voluminous archive of supportive documentation. “The gun is an icon of the American Revolutionary War,” said Dan Morphy, founder and president of Morphy Auctions. “At the Battle of Bunker Hill, Col. William Prescott instructed his troops not to shoot at the Redcoats until they could see the whites of their eyes, but in his excitement, Simpson preemptively fired off the battle’s first shot. He was only lightly reprimanded for disobeying orders and later rose to the rank of major. His musket remained a treasured family heirloom until

Wars have woven a continual thread throughout recorded history, and as nations have risen or fallen in defeat, their historical artifacts have been lost or severely depleted. A desire to own and preserve relics that played a role in critical conflicts is why so many history buffs worldwide collect weaponry and militaria. A preferred source for collectors of superior-quality antique objects of war is Morphy Auctions, whose next Edged Weapons, Armor and Militaria sale is slated for Tuesday, Dec. 10. Fine swords and sabers with distinguished provenance will be in plentiful supply. A very rare U.S. Model 1840 officer’s sword was originally issued to a member of the small, elite Corps of Engineers, which drew top graduates from West Point. They played a key role in the country’s security, building forts and undertaking public projects, as well as mapping the country’s westward expansion. “There were only 39 engineer officers at the time of this sword’s production, so it was a scarce item from day one,” said Dan Morphy, president of Morphy Auctions. Its 31.75-inch blade is etched “N.P. Ames/Cutler/Springfield and U.S. Corps of Engineers,” along with trophy arms and a U.S. flag. Formerly in the collection of George M. Rapport, it comes to auction with a $15,000-$20,000 estimate. Similar in objective but a separate organization from the Engineers Corps, the respected Topographical Engineers claimed among their alumni the Civil War generals Robert E. Lee and George B. McClellan. An Ames Topographical Civil War saber, whose pattern was a modification of the 1833 Dragoon Officer’s saber, is etched on

Yuletide At Winterthur Features Four Decades Of Favorites The 40th Year Of The Region’s Premier Holiday Tradition Dazzles With The Displays Visitors Love founder Henry Francis du Pont’s own trees also will be seen, including the 1890s tree of his boyhood decorated with candy-filled cornucopia set among flickering candles and his 1930s tree embellished with glass balls, tinsel, and the still-new strings of colored electric lights. Winterthur’s signature dried-flower tree, first seen in 1985, will hold pride of place in the Conservatory. Other uniquely designed trees celebrating the March Bank and Peony Garden will remind everyone of the delights that await visitors every spring and summer in the Winterthur Garden. In a nod to the popular “Costuming The Crown” exhibition, which features 40 costumes from the Emmy awardwinning Netflix series about the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, several Yuletide displays will look at royal influence on American winter celebrations, including the popularization
of the Christmas tree by Queen Victoria in the 1850s. Of course, guests will also see the traditions of American royalty, the du Pont family, reflected in several displays. Special holiday programs throughout the season include the weekly Yuletide Jazz and Wine series, which features favorite holiday music ensembles on Wednesday evenings in December; live one-man performances of “A Christmas Carol” featuring Gerald Charles Dickens, the great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens; and the popular Yuletide Brunch with Santa. Check www.winterthur.org/ yuletide for a list of these and other events to make the season special. Packed Crowd Produces Strong Prices At JSEA Americana Sale Pair Of Sturtevant Hamblin Portraits Brings $64,350 The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Americana Auction held Nov. 15 and 16 was a highly successful event and produced robust prices, along with a few surprises, in multiple categories. The two-day format consisted of 1,734 lots, much of which was fresh to the market and, in a number of cases, had descended directly in the families of the original owners. Bidding was intense throughout each day, with thousands of registered bidders from numerous countries participating online in competition with a standingroom-only gallery crowd eager to acquire something rare and desirable. Session one featured an excellent selection of 18thand 19th-century glass, lighting, and ceramics, including rare blown three-mold articles, early lighting devices, colored candlesticks and vases, rare pressed lacy glass, flint EAPG, and an extensive selection of Staffordshire transferware including many rare American historical views. The top lot was a cutglass presentation compote with finely engraved steam train, ca. 1860, probably made by C. Dorflinger. The striking object with crossover appeal drew much pre-sale interest and went to private collector from Philadelphia on the phone for $9,360. All prices reported include a 17-percent

buyer’s premium. Other noteworthy results from the first day included a free-blown whale oil stand lamp with rare cobalt blue saucer base at $6,435; an important “J. & C. Ritchie” lacy glass window pane selling for $4,095; and an English Black Americana transfer-printed ceramic pitcher at $3,276. Session two consisted of the firm’s usual diverse selection of Americana and fine antiques, highlighted by important American and Georgian silver from the estate of Commander Buryl and Nelwyn Kay; an exciting group of American folk art from the collection of Jean and Robert Vogel, featuring fraktur, painted furniture, textiles, and ceramics; and an excellent selection of American needlework from the collection of Helen Sutton. Saturday’s offerings included a diverse range of rare 18thand 19th-century objects that generated tremendous presale excitement. The top lot for day two, selling for $64,350, was an important pair of Sturtevant Hamblin folk art portraits of a brother This Stirewalt family paint-decorated and sister from a Bath, Maine, box sold for $38,025. family. A fine early example of
the artist’s work, the pair went to a determined collector on the phone. Other noteworthy results included a recently discovered Stirewalt family paint-decorated yellow pine box at $38,025; a Native American Plains Indian beaded pipe bag at $23,400; and a rare Myer Myers silver sauceboat, which realized $16,380. A recent discovery, a fine Charles Burton profile portrait of a girl, sold for $22,230. Furniture offerings produced strong results overall, demonstrating some signs of vigor in what is an unpredictable segment of the market. Top performers in this category of the sale were a Jacob Fry (Woodstock, Va.) inlaid cherry tall-case clock at $14,040; an extremely rare Shenandoah Co., Virginia, inlaid walnut hanging spice box at $12,870; and a desirable Valley of Virginia punched-tin-paneled walnut sideboard safe selling for $9,360. After the sale, company president and auctioneer Jeffrey S. Evans commented, “We were very pleased with the strong interest across the board in this auction. The gallery was packed for session two on Saturday, resulting in a level of robust, sustained bidding that produced very strong results across all categories of the sale. A key part of that success was the fresh nature of most of the material offered. It was an honor to work with the Vogel collection and the Sutton collection, for instance, and we certainly hope to continue to attract more like consignments as they come to market.” Evans added, “Our multi-session June 2020 Americana Auction will feature several important
collections of early glass, a fine group of material from a California collection, and several choice selections from collectors and estates across
the country, so we are looking forward to another exciting sale.” For complete auction results, a schedule of 2020
