Locati LLC of Maple Glen, Pa., presented its October online-only sale from Oct. 7 to 21. With over 400 lots, this sale featured estate jewelry, fine art, furniture, silver and more from various collections and estates from Pennsylvania and New Jersey. “We were happy to offer the fine Chippendale chest in our October sale,” said Michael Locati. “In a challenging furniture market, it was nice to see such a strong price.” The period reverse serpentine blockfront chest of drawers brought $12,500. Trainer Promotional Hologram Trading Card Was Given To Winners Of 1998’s CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest In Japan A Nintendo Pokémon “Pikachu Illustrator” trainer promotional hologram trading card, graded in Mint 9 condition and given to a winner at the 1998 CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest in Japan, soared to $224,250 (a new world auction record) at an auction held Oct. 23, by Weiss Auctions, online and in the firm’s gallery at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, N.Y. Fan-favorite Pikachu starred on what is inarguably the most valuable and rarest Pokémon card in the world. Although the technical name for the card is “Pokémon Illustrator,” it is typically referred to as “Pikachu Illustrator” due to the image. What makes it so rare is that it wasn’t sold but awarded as a prize at the illustration contest through CoroCoro Comic. Only a few were produced. Sworders Sold Vase In Essex On Nov. 8 A Chinese vase bought for just one pound in a charity shop has sold for a staggering £484,000 (U.S. $487,955) on Nov. 8 after it emerged that it was made for an 18th-century emperor. One pound sterling currently equals roughly 1.28 U.S. dollars. The lucky shopper, unaware of its significance, listed the small yellow vase on eBay only to be inundated with messages and bids, and quickly removed it from the site and took it to Sworders Fine Art Auctioneers’ in Stansted Mountfitchet, Essex. The auction house studied the 8-inch-tall vase and identified it as being Chinese imperial and made for the Qianlong Emperor, who reigned from 1735 to 1796. The Qianlong famille rose vase is marked with a symbol that meant it wasn’t for export, but for one of the emperor’s palaces. It is inscribed with an imperial poem that “praises incense” and two iron-red seal marks that read, “Qianlong chen han,” or, “The

So today we set out to hit the antiques co-ops to try and find a flowerpot. Okay, a bit trivial, but I have a cyclamen that I have been getting some good blooms out of, and it needs a bigger pot. I love cyclamen, particularly at the holidays. About 30 years ago, I was fortunate enough to be a guest of one of the DuPonts in their private home. While waiting in the solarium, I observed a bank of blooming cyclamen that was truly over the top. Since then, I try and have some colonies blooming in my home for the holidays. And this little guy from last year is looking good but a bit pot bound. We headed out hoping that I could find a cheap Chinese flowerpot for the flower. I love hitting the malls for flowerpots, as you can often find those Chinatown hospitality gifts from the 1950s. So off we went. The first mall had a lot of stuff put out by a decorator dealer. I use the term decorator dealer since the booth is always set up like an interior decorator’s showcase. Such booths usually leave me cold as they feature highly finished, newly made secondhand furnishings. But they do often have flowerpots of some quality. This one did not have any flowerpots, but they did have a table lot of sterling silver candlesticks and nut dishes. They were clearly wedding gifts from the late 1950s or early ’60s, but priced at $10 to $15 per bowl and pair of sticks, they came home. At that price,

So, I arrived at the checkout. The pile of treasures ended up in two shopping bags. I was out about $90. And guess what, not a single flowerpot. Maybe better luck next week.

the candlesticks can sit on a windowsill with a hurricane globe and look awesome for the holidays. Okay, a couple of booths later we hit a kitchen collectible dealer. Again, another likely source of flowerpots. A quick look revealed nothing, but our youngest daughter, Mary, who loves cooking tools, found a real treasure—a mounted ice grinder from the 1960s in the shape of a rocket complete with rocket fins. Very cool and perfect for her growing kitchen collection. Our next stop was a general dealers booth, a bit of a crapshoot, but you never know. No flowerpots, but eldest daughter, Jane, found a vintage camera for her collection. Cameras are fun to collect because they have both great design elements and tell the changing story of photo technology. So the vintage camera came home. Okay, our last hope was a gardening designer decorator booth with its share of ubiquitous rusty newly made garden animals. Positioned in the front window of the co-op, and you would think a flowerpot would have to be there. No such luck. But my wife, Kim, found a lovely blown glass decanter. A good period piece, and for $15 bucks, it had to come home. In the midst of this, our youngest daughter found a vintage toy for her best friend for Christmas. Okay, for $5, the price was right.

Portraits Of Lt. Col. And Mrs. Lotz Bring $11,400 In Kempton A pair of antique watercolor portraits most likely by Jacob Maentel sold for a combined $11,400 at a David Loeb sale held Nov. 16 at the Kempton Community Center in the northern Berks County, Pa., town of Kempton. On the back read, â€œGreat Grandfather Lotz/ died May 10, 1824/ age 54 years /38 yrs old when taken 1808.â€? And, on reverse of the other read, â€œGreat Grandmother Lotz/ died Dec. 3, 1837 /aged 65 years/ 37 years old when taken 1808.â€? The portraits were consigned to the unadvertised general household sale by the daughter of the late Alvin

Adam. Adam was the caretaker of the Esther Ludwig estate. Ludwig (1906-2005) owned a horse farm south of Hamburg, was a major collector, and left a lasting philanthropic legacy in the form of scholarships for Shoemakersville area public school students. There was an on-site sale for the Ludwig estate, and also Freemanâ€™s held a sale on Nov. 22, 2005. It is possible the portraits came from Ludwig, but not via either auction. Auctioneer David Loeb of Lenhartsville, Pa., stated he went to school with the consignor and the two were in the same graduating high school class. Large Sale To Take Place In Downingtown, Pa., On Dec. 7 By Noel Barrett Antique toys and other amusements seems a perfect title for our Saturday, Dec. 7, sale. Along with our usual array of playthings from the past, we have a fascinating group of Coney Island, Atlantic City, Steel Pier, and other amusement park items from the eclectic collection of the late Henry Fox. Before I went into the auction business some 30 years ago, I had an antique shop in Carversville, Pa., a little village in Bucks County. Rosebud Antiques offered a wide variety of toys, advertising, and all manner of memorabilia, both large and small. Off the beaten track, the store was less of a store and more of a base of operations for my buying at shows and antique markets throughout the country. Not much foot traffic, but more than a few interesting customers finding their way to our doorstep. Henry Fox and his wife, Joann, found me on one of their Bucks County buying forays, and I found a soulmate. I always loved big and crazy things, a taste that you can only indulge if you have space. I had

30-by-60 feet, the first floor of an old general store, so the shop was a magnet for “big.” Henry loved “big,” and he wanted the giant Regal boot I had. And I had a customer who shared my taste. I visited his home once while he was still alive, one of only two people he ever shared his collection with. I loved amusement parks as a kid. Henry did too, and among his treasures are items from Coney Island and Atlantic City, including the Steel Peer. Coney treasures include the three-figure mechanical display, “The Gambling Chimps.” It was displayed in the front window of a boardwalk fun house in the early 1920s. Among the other animated displays inside the fun house was a “Magician with Levitating Lady” automaton, one of Henry’s favorite pieces that he restored to working condition. Further down the beach was “The Spook House” dark-ride. This is where Henry found the giant animated gorilla head and other spooky denizens of the dark for his collection. We have photos of both the large gorilla as seen on the ride and the chimps in the fun house window. Fortune telling

machines and other penny arcade coin-ops also found a home in the Fox collection. My comic character collection included handcrafted cigarette ashtray smoking stands of Popeye, Jiggs & Maggie, etc., some of which are pictured in a coffee table book on smoking paraphernalia. A Bucks County folk art collector I never knew and lived only 20 minutes from saw the book and decided to consign some of her stands with us. Her collection really out-classed mine, truly idiosyncratic pieces, each one-ofa-kind. I am thankful that these

The Fox collection included a nice grouping of Halloween items and unusual Santa Claus figures. Two other holiday collections round out the Fox items as nice selections of Halloween and Christmas pieces. It’s always exciting when fooling around with antique toys to happen upon something one has never seen. A new find for me is “The Careless Engineer.” The illustrated label on sliding box lid indicates a

patent date April 23, 1871, but gives no idea as to its maker. Pieces, when assembled, create a colorful steam plant in paper on wood with a painted tin boiler. The “brick” base houses a robust Ives style clockwork mechanism, and the fly wheel spins at tremendous speed until something goes awry and the boiler blows, a tin section flies off and the whole structure collapses, thus “the careless engineer,” a great find by one of our lucky consignors. A late addition to the sale is a McLoughlin Bros. “Bulls and Bears - The Great Wall St. Game,” patented 1883, with a vibrant lithograph box lid of a dressed bull and bear standing on Wall Street. The original folding board includes comic portrait vignettes of Gilded Age stock market characters Jay Gould, Cornelius Vanderbilt and Horace Greely. The box is complete with packing inserts. If Betty couldn’t transform me from Kitchen Klutz into Chef Boy-Are-Don, then nobody could! So, I bought them. In “Entertaining,” Betty gets things off to a cheery start: “Here is a book about hospitality, and how it can be easy and fun.” Sounds encouraging. First, Betty answers a few pesky preparty-planning inquiries: Question: “Is it all right to invite guests of different political persuasions?” Answer: “It is never amiss to say, ‘Joe is working hard on the election – and not for your candidate. But forgive him that, and you’ll enjoy him.’” Soon though, she gets down to the real meat-and-potatoes of the thing: those recipes!
