Elverson Antiques Show Slated For Oct. 26 And 27 Great Semiannual Country Show Is Among Highlights Of The Year For Antiquers The popular semiannual Elverson Antiques Show will be held for the 100th time on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26 and 27. How does a show that began 50 years ago keep going and going? It must reflect changes in the antiques market while continuing the tradition of a good, old fashioned country show where people can find antiques that fit into their contemporary lifestyle at affordable prices. From its start as a fundraiser for the Elverson Fire Company in 1969, the show now helps to support the Twin Valley High School lacrosse teams. Students and their parents work as porters, help with setup, and run the food stand. It is a true team effort to produce a quality antiques show where visitors can find first-class merchandise at buyable prices. Located high on a hill in Chester County, in Elverson, Pa., the show is
like a treasure hunt and a true throwback to the way antique shows used to be. It has a reputation for offering outstanding selections of folk art, unusual smalls, and country antiques. From early china, stoneware, fraktur, holiday items, and baskets to quilts, furniture, and weathervanes, the Elverson Antiques show has it all. While most of the dealers are from Pennsylvania, visitors will find dealers from several surrounding states, including Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Ohio. The show is held in the Twin Valley High School, located at 4897 North Twin Valley Road, Elverson, Pa. It is within easy driving distance from Continued on page 6
In a deaccession auction for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) held on Sept. 14, Cordier Auctions sold a rare 1902 GardnerSerpollet steam automobile for $91,000 hammer ($109,200 with 20 percent buyer’s premium). The brothers Leon and Henri Serpollet spent years perfecting the flash tube boiler, and in 1898 they met wealthy American Frank Gardener. Together, Gardener-Serpollet began producing vehicles in 1900. With the flash boiler, the Serpolletpowered cars featured some of the most impressive ranges for horseless carriages in their day. This example was offered with other deaccessioned items from across the state and drew attention from around the country. Prior to being consigned for sale, the objects were offered to other PHMC properties, state agencies and other historic museums.

Morphy’s To Offer Important American Treasure: Musket That Fired First Shot At 1775 Battle Of Bunker Hill
First Bodnar’s At The Jersey Shore Sale Slated on page 4

Musket And Commission Has Remained In Family For 244 Years
Arguably the most significant, positively identified Revolutionary long arm in existence, the Dutch flintlock musket that fired the first shot at the 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill will be offered on day two of Morphy’s Extraordinary Firearms Auction to be held Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 22 and 23. It is expected to sell for $100,000-$300,000.
The .79-caliber Dutch flintlock musket with bayonet was originally the property of Private John Simpson (1748-1825) of Deerfield, N.H. After shooting began at the Battle of Lexington and Concord, Simpson joined a volunteer militia led by Capt. Henry Dearborn and marched with that company to Boston. They arrived there on June 17, 1775, and merged with two other New Hampshire outfits. In anticipation of the Redcoats’ arrival by water, Col. William Prescott ordered his patriot forces to fortify their position on the beach with a makeshift barrier of rocks and wood. During what would become known as

British troops advanced toward Breed’s Hill and nearby Bunker Hill in Charlestown that morning, after a steady overnight assault of cannon fire on the colonists. With Royal Navy warships in Boston Harbor as their backup, Gen. William Howe’s British army proceeded up Breed’s Hill in perfect battle formations. It was at that time that Prescott issued the order, “Don’t shoot until you see the whites of their eyes!” Perhaps in his patriotic fervor to fend off a powerful enemy, Simpson jumped to his feet and fired an unauthorized first shot, hitting a mounted British officer. After enduring two assaults, the Colonial troops ran out of ammunition. They retreated over Bunker Hill to Cambridge, ceding control of the Charlestown Peninsula to the British. However, the enemy paid a heavy price, with 226 dead and 828 wounded.
Colonial casualties numbered 115 dead and 305 wounded. The day after the Battle of Bunker Hill, Simpson was court martialed for disobeying his commander’s orders, but he was only lightly reprimanded and soon returned to duty. By the time the war ended, Simpson had risen to the rank of major. He never applied for a pension, stating, “My country is too poor to pay pensions.” The Simpson family is inextricably woven into the tapestry of American history. John Simpson, himself a great patriot, was the grandfather of Civil War hero and U.S. President Ulysses Simpson Grant and the great-grandfather of explorer Meriwether Lewis (Lewis and Clark Expedition). The Dutch smoothbore .79-caliber Type III flintlock musket with bayonet that John Simpson used to fire the first shot at the Battle of Bunker Hill has remained in his family by direct descent for

the past 244 years. The gun has been an object of intense interest for many gun scholars and historians. It was featured in a 1906 article in “The Granite State Magazine,” with an accompanying photograph of the gun
and Simpson’s military commission captioned, “The gun that fired the first shot at Bunker Hill.” It will be offered at auction with several copies of a 50-page book of extensive professional research compiled and written by Jonathan
Holstein. The book scrupulously documents the firearm’s provenance, the Simpson family’s history, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and Simpson’s court martial. It also includes photographs of John Simpson’s home, his gravestone and historical marker. With impeccable family provenance and extensive historical documentation, the musket will be offered by Morphy’s together with John Simpson’s framed original Second Lieutenant’s commission from the state of New Hampshire, dated March 13, 1778. Morphy’s has handled the sale of several revered icons of American military history. On June 13, the auction house sold an 1864 handpainted flag that was carried into battle by the 127th Regiment, one of 11 African American Civil War regiments from Pennsylvania, for $196,800. The buyer was the Atlanta History Center. “We were deeply honored to bring such a precious
historical artifact to the marketplace, and now we have the privilege of auctioning a firearm that symbolizes one of the most important battles leading to American independence,” said Morphy Auctions president, Dan Morphy. “It will be exciting to see whether the Simpson musket ends up in a private or institutional collection.” Morphy’s Extraordinary, Sporting and Collector Firearms Auction will feature 1,270 lots of outstanding firearms, including antique and modern rifles, shotguns and handguns, as well as cannons, historical ephemera and ammunition. The auction will be held at the company’s gallery in Denver, Pa., starting at 9 a.m. Eastern Time each day. All forms of bidding will be available, including live via the internet through Morphy Live. For addiyional information, call 877-968-8880 or email info@morphyauctions.com. furniture in the marketplace. The book was a funny read, particularly since the longterm history for this material has not measured up to the stellar projections that they anticipated. The difference in investment or speculative collecting from what most of us do is that we embrace the love of the object that transcends where the marketplace is on any given day. We can love the pewter pitcher or the Marklin train for what it is, and if the market is strong, then we count ourselves lucky to have bought when we did. Conversely, if the internet shows that our cache of limited-edition books is now valueless, we still can take comfort in reading and enjoying them. The collector that I have been writing about does have a sub-collection within his

What I found fascinating about this investor collector were his efforts to predict the market and all its vagaries. Like reading the stock or bond markets, he looked for a degree of understanding and predictability about antiques. He charted it on his computer! He was looking for that secret formula that would direct him towards better buying. He related that he sold one collection about five years ago because he felt the market in that “sector” was too inflated. He sold other items when he saw the market in that area as having “matured” and there was “no growth potential” remaining. I recall many years ago reading a book that attempted to show a financial track record history for French antique furniture. The charts and graphs traced the history of Louis XV or Charles X

Peter Swift Seibert A while ago, I visited a collector who comes from that unique subset of us all, the collector/speculator. This is the person who, while loving the art or antique items, also looks to the value of the object as part of their portfolio. In this case, the collector told the story that he had secured a line of credit with a bank and could not figure out the best
use of the money, so he invested in art and antiques. The result was a 40-year focus on buying, selling and collecting: in that order. The individual had a full-time profession, so this was a hobby, but it was one that was seen in a lucrative vein rather than purely just for the “sport of the hunt.” Now we all collect with the secret hope that we are making prudent financial decisions. Collecting is about, after all, spending money, and often, at least I do, justify this by saying that what we seek out will grow in value. When 2008 hit the economy, the news that antiques were not a foolproof hedge against inflation hit many collectors hard. I recall one who was a serious furniture collector and who ran away after the market came unglued. He could not handle the financial devaluing of his acquisitions.

First Bodnar’s At The Jersey Shore Sale Slated
On Thursday, Oct. 24, Bodnar’s Auctions will host its first annual Bodnar’s at the Jersey Shore, which will take place at the Convention Hall in downtown Cape May, N.J. The sale will begin at 9 a.m. with an “Antiques Roadshow style appraisal. Interested individuals can purchase a ticket for $12 and get up to two items appraised by one of two appraisers. There will also be a short talk on antiques and collectibles trends in the current marketplace. Proceeds from the tickets will be donated to the Cape May Community Food Closet. Beginning at noon, the auction fun will begin. “The art of auctioneering is a small market here in New Jersey, according to Joseph Bodnar. “So many places do onlineonly auctions and call themselves an auction house, but you can never understand the
excitement that comes along with a crowd that is revved up and ready to bid. This sale is full of unique and interesting finds. Bodnar and his staff have been scouring estates for months looking for just the right mix of items, such as early nautical items including model ships, clipper flags, lanterns and more. This sale will also include many collectibles such as Swarovski, Zsolnay, Royal Crown Derby and Herend. Art glass including signed Vandermark, a collection of early advertising, tin signs, buckets, jars, boxes, spool cabinets, bottles, and more will be sold. There will also be a gold coin collection including many early $20 gold pieces, gold Sovereigns, and many gold foreign coins. It’s hard to think about Cape May without thinking about the Victorian era. A large array of Victorian era furniture, sofas, clocks, many great carved pieces, as well as mother-of-pearl inlaid pieces are included. Of course, it wouldn’t be

Leading the Benefit Shop Foundation’s Red Carpet Auction on Sept. 11 was one of George Rodrigue’s colorful and iconic “Blue Dog” paintings, which sold for $25,600, including the buyer’s premium. “This signed painting was acquired by the owner directly from Rodrigue’s New Orleans art gallery and has all

Antiques And Artisans Show Planned For Vincentown, N.J., On Nov. 2 antiques dealers from New Jersey and Pennsylvania offering antique and vintage items of every description. Visitors will find furniture, glass, pottery, jewelry, sterling silver,
antique quilts, books, antique prints and much more to admire and purchase. Artisan craft vendors will also be included for the first time, offering handcrafted pottery and quilts, locally inspired paintings and photography, hand-blown glass, precious metal jewelry, and alpaca products. There will also be demonstrations of traditional basket weaving, broom making, and spinning wool. The one-day event will take place in the school gymnasium, located just off Main Street in Vincentown, N.J. The show hours will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A modest donation of $3 is suggested, and ample parking space at the site is free of charge. In addition to the show, there will be food, music and a basket auction.
Planned as a fundraiser for the Vincentown Garden Club, the proceeds will help support the group’s various beautification and preservation projects. Shows such as this one attract visitors from a wide area who enjoy decorating with and collecting antiques and provide the opportunity for visitors to learn about and gain an appreciation for antiques, which are very often considerably less expensive than modern furnishings and much better constructed. The show also supports artisans in the region who make traditional craft products. Several organizations in Burlington County have discontinued running antiques shows, creating a void in the market. Among them, the
long running Christmas in November Bazaar run by the Historical Society since the 1970s will not be held this year. The VGC intends to fill these voids not only this year, but for years to come with Antiques and Artisans. The group thinks Vincentown is an ideal location. The town is easily reached from population centers throughout South Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania. It lies just west
of Route 206, about midway between Routes 38 and 70, and County Route 616 (Church Road) leads directly there from east or west. Elegant Victorian era houses line Vincentown’s two main thoroughfares. The VGC asks that collectors and dealers mark their calendars now and plan to support this new show. For further information, call Jane Yosko at 609841-2984.

Remington’s “Bronco Buster” Among Coveted Western Choices In Heritage Auctions’ American Art Auction
A 1.5-scale cast of Frederic Remington’s “Bronco Buster” is expected to be the top lot in Heritage Auctions’ American Art auction on Friday, Nov. 1, in Dallas, Texas, which features an outstanding selection of Western Art. “Bronco Buster” (est. $500,000-700,000) is a rare 1.5-scale work, measuring 32.8 inches high. Shortly before Elected as a member of the cowboy artists of America in 1975, Frank McCarthy (1924-2002) is best known for depictions of Plains Indians in action. The work “Lassoing a Rhino” (est. $40,000-$60,000) has the same drama transferred to the African Savanna.
Much of Howard A. Terpning’s work was devoted to telling the history of Northern Plains tribes. “Jicarilla Apache Raiders,” from 1975 (est. $200,000-$300,000), demonstrates the artist’s mastery at capturing the details of Southern Plains people.
the artist died in 1909, he made a large-scale plaster model of his popular sculpture that has been cast nearly 300 times since it was created in 1895. The sculpture underwent a few small changes when it was enlarged, including the rider’s hand being outstretched farther and no longer carrying the short whip in the original. The example offered in this sale is number 12 of 19 casts made of the larger version. Other casts can be found in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Fort Worth’s Amon Carter Museum and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo. Although much of Howard A. Terpning’s work has been devoted to telling the

painting is among Terpning’s most sought-after subject matter and painted at the height of his career. William Robinson Leigh’s “The Last Watering Hole,” 1912 (est. $200,000-$300,000), highlights the talent of an artist known for capturing scenes that reveal the hardships faced by those who endured life in the West. This 37-by-49-inch oil painting comes to auction for the first

history of Northern Plains tribes, “Jicarilla Apache Raiders,” from 1975 (est. $200,000-$300,000), demonstrates the artist’s mastery at capturing the details of Southern Plains people as well. The rendering of clothing and weapons, the realistic portrayal of the warriors’ physiques, and the manner in which the horses have been packed all show that Terpning is not only a great artist, but also a dedicated student of history. Terpning received a commission from Winchester firearms that rekindled his interest in the American West in the 1970s. In 1975, the year this canvas was completed, Terpening left his career as a commercial artist in order to devote himself full-time to Western subjects. This

Frederic Remington’s (American, 1861-1909) “The Bronco Buster” was conceived in 1895; this was cast in 1909, bronze with greenishbrown patina, 32-7/8 inches high, Ed. 12/19, and inscribed on base “Frederic Remington / Copyright by / Frederic Remington 1895.” It’s stamped “Roman Bronze Works / NY / Cire Perdue Cast” and “12” on base. Remington’s “The Bronco Buster” is widely considered the quintessential image of American Western art. The work represents Remington’s first venture into sculpture, having already established himself as a celebrated easel painter. While Remington was not the first artist to depict this classic struggle between rider and horse, he may well have been the most successful in terms of capturing it. The estimate will be $500,000-$700,000.

portion of the second session were from an old collection amassed by Dr. John and Arlene Zimmerman of Schaefferstown, Pa. The first 42 lots of day two came from the Clarke Hess estate, and a number of other lots were from the collection of Joseph and Elizabeth Statler of Chambersburg, Pa. Material from other consignors rounded out the sale, which as a whole was a quality sale, with prices realized to prove it. Horst does not charge a buyer’s premium. There is a 10 percent premium for online or absentee bidding. No phone bidding is done. The 753 lots totaled $242,500.
Some fine English pearlware china and spatterware china witnessed decent competition. Robesonia, Pa., dealer Greg Kramer was a major buyer across the board. The spatter market in particular has seen an uptick for unsual patterns and forms. Condition is paramount. Signed Berks County redware is uncommon, and there are plenty of collectors presently active in the market vying for it when it surfaces. It didn’t surprise many in the salesroom when the rare Horst Auction Center is at 50 Durlach Joseph Feeg redware lidded Road just off Route 322 outside of jar brought $3,900. Yellow ground Lehnware is very rare. This cup and saucer with traditional strawberry and stem design on yellow ground in excellent condition sold to a collector for $8,000. Another yellow example in equally good condition will be sold at Horst in its Oct. 25 and 26 sale.
This small redware glazed mug is stamped “Adam Weaber” on top of the applied handle. Weaber was an early potter in Womelsdorf, and very few examples of his work are known. It sold for $1,850.

utilitarian Heidelberg Township potters Feeg and Smith collect work from their ancestors’ pottery and were in attendance at the sale. The lidded jar was in an unsual manganese splotched olive lead glaze and stamped underneath “I Feeg.” The buyer was dealer Greg Kramer bidding on behalf of collector Brad Hamilton. The underbidder was a collector of Berks County pottery. “It’s rare to see those colors and the original lid,” mentioned Hamilton. “It’s a neat piece. Something I don’t think Lester ever knew about,” said Hamilton. The late Lester Breininger was a businessman known to all, a historian of Berks County, and a collector of epic proportions. A stamped Feeg bowl in the same glaze treatment as the jar sold for $5,200 on May 21, 2016, at a sale conducted by John Hess at Breininger’s Taylor Mansion. It is also in the Hamilton collection. Joseph Feeg is buried in St. Daniel’s Cemetery. Another interesting regional piece of signed redware was a small glazed mug stamped on the arch of the applied handle, “Adam Weaber.” It brought $1,850 to

Leave Loved Ones With Realistic Value Expectations “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich It happens quite often when I perform a house or estate contents appraisal. A client brings out an item with a note from mom, dad or the grandparents that basically says, “This is extremely valuable,” or, “This is worth X.” Usually this “value” was obtained from a wellintentioned individual with little or no expertise in the category and is nowhere near today’s realistic value. Often it’s a piece of cut glass, artwork or print, furniture item, Limoges plate or vase, china set, or perhaps a run-of-the-mill Chotchkee. The other day it was an antique and very primitive workbench that was 10 feet long, weighed several hundred pounds, and the young owner had been told it was worth at least $1,000 by a family member. I doubt that it would have brought $5 at auction. Frequently it’s up to me to break the bad news regarding value. And a sad reality today is that few in the younger generation want most antiques and collectibles the same way their parents or grandparents did. When anticipating leaving treasures to loved ones, remember that there are actually two totally different types of value. •Sentimental Value This encompasses all of the stories, memories, family lore, and history associated with the item. Who owned it? Where did it came from? What makes it so special? Why should it remain in the family? Sentimental value can be valuable to family members who want to carry on the family legacy and share details with loved ones and future generations. If someone important or famous was associated with it, value can increase exponentially. That’s called “provenance.” But you can’t spend “sentimental value.” •Cash Value This is completely different from sentimental value. This is what someone can sell it for if they wish to convert it into cash. And unfortunately, all too often those who are left these “valuable” items want nothing to do with them and are disappointed when they hear how little they’re actually worth today. My advice is that if you’re planning to leave some “treasures” to family members and loved ones, you need to do three things: First, make sure they actually want it. Second, create a written “sentimental value” legacy of the items you wish to pass on, which leaves no room for misunderstanding or confusion. Third, get a professional and impartial appraisal or opinion of “cash value” from a knowledgeable individual who has no interest in buying it. After all, you’re leaving your family treasures
OCEAN LINER MEMORABILIA china, glassware, silver, paper, souvenirs, posters or models. Cunard, French Line, White Star Line, Italian Line, etc. 607-625-3947
to your loved ones. It’s important and only fair that you leave them with an accurate history as well as realistic value expectations. What’s it worth? We perform many “equitable distribution appraisals” for clients who wish to avoid any family disagreements after their passing. Some prefer to leave specific items to specific loved ones. Others simply want their heirs to understand value so they can more equitably divide items among themselves. That’s precisely what an equitable distribution appraisal can accomplish. Another benefit is that values provided by an independent, unbiased, and impartial third party can protect you or the executor against undue criticism. Either way, you need to remember that sentimental value and cash value are two totally different entities, and it’s only fair that you leave both to your loved ones.

This type of collector is the opposite of the trophy hunter that strictly sees antiques as art to be under lights and encased in a display case. The latter are often inand-out of the marketplace. The former are collectors for life, as was the case for Breininger. “If Lester would still be around, he would have had to have had it,” echoed Hamilton. Later in the auction, a small 4-inch diameter, 2-inch tall glazed redware tapersided bowl stamped underneath “I.S. Henne” sold to the collector who underbid the Feeg jar for $2,200. Joseph Henne was a potter in Upper Tulpehocken Township, Berks County. Snavely’s work was popularized by the 1991 publishing of “Just for Nice” by Dick and Rosemarie Machmer. Snavely lived in Lititz, Pa. A “Schtockschnitzler” Simmons paint-decorated woodencarved bird cane sold for $3,900 late in the sale to a collector who lives not far from where the German immgrant carver roamed some 125 years ago in and around the Kutztown and Moselem Springs area of Berks County. Joseph Lehn (1798-1892) is largely known for his woodenturned and paint-decorated
lidded cups called “Lehnware.” He worked in Elizabeth Township, Lancaster County, close to where the Horst Auction facility is today. Yellow ground paint decoration is very rare for the maker, and among the stars of this sale was a small yellow ground cup and saucer with traditional strawberry and stem design, all in excellent condition, selling to a collector in the salesroom for $8,000.
