Kempton Antiques Show Scheduled For Oct. 19 Gem Of A Show Is Can’t-Miss Event In Southeastern Pennsylvania
The Thursday, Oct. 17, Yarbrough Coca-Cola sale contains 465 prized lots from one of America’s most admired “soda pop” collections. This very scarce 1922 oval Coca-Cola bathing beauty pocket mirror, NM, one of the best of all known examples, will be estimated at $10,000$20,000. The John and Charlotte Yarbrough collection shines a spotlight on 30 years of scholarship and thoughtful acquisition of premier Coca-Cola and antique soda-related artifacts. “John and Charlotte started their collection in 1988 in Memphis, at the legendary ‘Pop’ Poppenheimer Coca-Cola auction,” said Dan Morphy. “From then on, their focus was always on rarity and condition. The Antique Dealers Association of Berks County, Pa., or ADABC, will proudly present its sixth annual Kempton Antiques Show on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Kempton Community Recreation Center, located at 83 Community Center Drive in Kempton, Pa. The small town of Kempton is in Albany Township, Berks County, north of the Kutztown/Krumsville exit of I78. This country show is known for having quality material at buyable prices. Many of the exhibitors do very few shows and bring fresh-to-themarket antiques. The show hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year’s edition will feature roughly 45 exhibitors offering an impressively wide variety of quality antiques. The show has a distinct “Pennsylvania Dutch” flavor. There will be Pennsylvania country furniture; textiles such as quilts, rag rugs, samplers, coverlets, and hooked rugs; pottery such as redware, stoneware and Staffordshire; vintage toys made of wood, tin, fabric and celluloid; metalware including pewter, cast-iron, tin and hand wrought iron; folk carvings; weathervanes; utilitarian baskets; woodenware like butter prints, rolling pins and other kitchen collectibles; and much more. It is not strictly a country show, however, there will be a range of estate jewelry, illustration art, tools, and Native American pottery, rugs and jewelry. In short, because it’s an association show, there will be something for
nearly every collector. Berks County has a storied reputation as a great source of antiques for collectors, dealers, and decorators. And, the ADABC has a long history. This professional organization was founded in 1948/49 by a group of antiques dealers who were legends in the antiquing community. They staged their first show in 1952 and were chartered as a nonprofit in 1954. Since that first show in 1952, the ADABC has promoted numerous annual and semiannual antique shows in a variety of venues in the Reading area. Six years ago, in an effort to improve and update the groups only show, a committee moved the event to the Kempton Community Center, choosing the third Saturday in October as its date. This location was carefully selected to better reach the Lehigh Valley, along with New Jersey customers. The group held a successful show in Kempton throughout the 1980s. The ADABC pioneers like Dick Machmer are gone, and this is a new era; however, this show is wellworth attending, and some great material always changes hands. The Lititz Historical Foundation in Lititz, Pa., is excited to announce a recent special donation. Through the generosity of an out-of-state donor, Lititz’s second post office
has made its way back to its place of origin and is currently on display in the same room where it once stood nearly 190 years ago. In 1806, Christian Hall became the first postmaster of Lititz and ran his small operation inside the Lititz Springs Hotel (now the General Sutter Inn). Then, in 1830, Frederick Zitzman (1787-1872) was appointed the second postmaster of Lititz by President Andrew Jackson and used the log structure portion of his home (now the Lititz Historical Foundation’s 1792 Johannes Mueller House) for his postal office. Items in the Yarbrough collection that feature Clark include two calendars from the turn of the 20th century. The first of the two has a complete calendar pad that begins in September 1900. colors. The second West Virginia flag has 35 stars in straight rows. The stars are hand sewn double appliqued muslin cotton. There is a twill sleeve with two button whipped stitched grommets, Canton and stripes are hand sewn wool bunting, and it measures 34-by-60 inches. Another interesting flag is from the Indian Wars era. It has a circular star design enclosing a large single star representing the Colorado statehood of Aug. 1, 1876. This is a rare configuration of stars printed on wool bunting. There is a hollow linen that appears to be machine chain stitched. This flag has slight mothing in the lower right and is 18-by-28 inches. Featured in the section of the estate sale dedicated to photography will be antique glass negatives, celluloid negatives, stereo cards, antique camera equipment and printing equipment, oil paintings, and a large selection of silver gelatin prints both by H.R. (1821-93) was a practicing photographer in Philadelphia for 40 years. He worked at the beginning stages of the practice, notably practicing photography as an art form. When he realized there was opportunity in stereo cards, he established his own “Stereoscopic Emporium,” or stereo card publishing business, on South Eighth Street. Cremer was the largest supplier of stereo cards in Philadelphia. Over 200 cards attributed to him will be included in the sale. was the grandson of James Cremer. Harry’s father, Frank R. Cremer, was also a photographer in Philadelphia. H. R. Cremer lived in Wilmington, Del. Shortly after high school graduation, he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for two years. H. R. Cremer made his living as a business diagnostician specializing in the import and export of products. Photography was a serious hobby, and he began exhibiting his work in 1924. He was a charter member of the Photographic Society of America and president of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts, Photography Department (now the Brooklyn Museum). In this auction are over 200 of H. R. Cremer’s images, many with stamps on verso of exhibitions near and far, from New York to Japan. In his art world dealings, H. R. Cremer met and photographed fellow artists such as photographer Margaret Bourke-White and illustrator W.H.D. Koerner. He shot a large image of Margaret Bourke-White reclined on a sofa, with her own images in the background. The exposure tests for this particular image are included in the auction, shedding light on the extensive procedures involved in darkroom printing. Koerner Continued on page 6

However, most experts agree that if one has the money to purchase a modern era Rolex or Patek Philippe watch, they may actually be better off going after a more popular vintage one due to the possibility of getting it at a discounted cost and also being able to benefit from the possible price appreciation of the item in question, should the collector choose a watch with continual collectible demand. An example of this is one of the company’s most popular watches. The Rolex Submariner currently has a price tag of around $9,000 if you were to buy a factory fresh model on the market today. Where you buy it can also impact price. Believe it or not, some watch enthusiasts claim it is better to buy a watch of this caliber in an affluent area where multiple luxury watch dealers reside to be better able to negotiate a price for a watch. Ironically, a vintage Rolex Submariner watch may have fewer “bells
elitism to them, I ask you to reconsider. After all, we have no problem discussing the recent comic book that sold for $100,000 or the rare coin that sold for $1 million or more. The markets for luxury watches and hand bags may seem insane to some, but when compared to the greater antiques and collectibles marketplace where prototype vintage “Star Wars” figures now sell for over $100,000, I assure you, buying a vintage Rolex is a bargain to some.

A simple Google search on “investing” in items like luxury watches and even luxury designer hand bags yields multiple results, so it should come as no surprise that some collectors of these items view these collectibles as a form of serious alternative assets. A beginning collector looking to enter the market for luxury watches needs to understand that it is quite

On April 24, 2015, Apple Incorporated released one of its most innovative devices since the introduction of the iPad in April of 2010. This device, known as the Apple Watch, would go on to become one of Apple’s most divisive products, causing differing opinions from some of Apple’s diehard fans. Some claim it is the future of the watch industry. Instead of elegance and handcrafted design, Apple chose to design the Apple Watch much like a computer or a smart phone. None of the traditional nuances that make up a beautifully handcrafted watch are featured in Apple’s design. This has caused watch and timepiece aficionados to take notice. Could something like Apple’s smart watch kill off elegant, handcrafted timepieces created by Rolex and Patek Philippe? If we ask the collectors’ market for highend luxury vintage timepieces, the answer is surely no. For the past few years, the market for higher-end luxury timepieces has been on fire. Heritage Auctions has now become a leading online auctioneer of some of these timepieces, and both collector interest and prices are soaring. With names like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Omega leading the pack, the world of collecting luxury timepieces can be daunting and full of peril for any up and coming collector. The market also has risen dramatically, with some of these luxury timepieces selling for tens of thousands of dollars or more. The market for vintage Rolex watches is especially appealing to a lot of new collectors, as Rolex has brand recognition that makes their products extremely liquid and quite popular on the secondary marketplace. The elements that make a vintage luxury timepiece an attractive collectible are almost the same as other items that become collectible. Condition, originality, and authenticity are by far the three most important characteristics to be aware of when buying a vintage luxury timepiece. If someone wants to buy their first collectible luxury watch, it is best to go through a trusted dealer or a

Richard Dotta Auction Company the U.S.S.R., and “The Accordion Player” is a wonderful example of what she saw there. The descriptive label reads, “Young Russian Worker, photographed in the U.S.S.R. 1931 at the village of Magnetnaya.” This print shows some silvering in places, but it remains arresting with its high contrast and aggressive layout. These works are excellent examples of early to mid-century American photography. Not to be outdone by famous artwork, tools of the trade provide a glimpse into the photographic world of both of the Cremers’ time periods. In the estate sale will be examples of practically everything used in the craft from photo paper boxes dating to the 1920s and ’30s stuffed with test prints and trials to 4-by-5 Kodak and Pony cameras with their original film holders. Back then, there was no door-to-door mail delivery, and residents made trips to Zitzman’s home to pick up their mail. It was also a time before postage stamps; once mail was picked up, the amount owed depended upon how far it traveled to arrive to its destination. Eventually, in 1847, postage stamps would be introduced. A recent visitor to the Lititz Historical Foundation from Colorado had possession of
this piece of Lititz and United States Post Office history, which they had owned for several decades. His father inlaw had originally purchased it at a public sale in Lititz and documented the provenance from the original seller. The Lititz Historical Foundation is thrilled to receive this generous gift and is honored to have the cabinet on display for the public to see and learn about. was known largely for his Saturday Evening Post covers throughout the 1930s and was photographed by Cremer in the process of painting his famous “Arapahoe Charge.” Austrian born artist Leon Dolice was known to Cremer, as his six engravings of New York City bear handwritten notes to him, intended as gifts. Among H. R. Cremer’s mentors was Theodore Marceau, and several portraits taken in his gallery in New York City are in the sale. The relationship between the Cremers and Nickolas Muray is unknown, but his famous silver gelatin print, “Desha,” is in the collection. The Margaret BourkeWhite images are in very good condition but are not affixed to their original embossed mats. The mats bear Margaret Bourke-White’s signature on the front and the photographer’s stamp and title of the image on the back. Each print is 9-by-13 inches. There are no markings, but each image is embellished by a fine black handpainted outside edge. “Gas Tanks” is a particularly iconic image with bold, dramatic shapes and soft toning. The descriptive label reads, “Storage Tanks for gas. I.G. Farben, Leunewerk, Germany, (Chemical & Dye trust).” Bourke-White was the first person granted permission to photograph subjects inside

Rivertown Presents Asian Art In No-Reserve Auction On Oct. 12 Offerings Range In Timeline From Shang Dynasty Through 20th Century Rivertown Antiques and Estate Services of Houston, Texas, is an auction house that specializes in Asian fine and decorative art. They will present a 202-lot auction on Saturday, Oct. 12, featuring rarities that follow a timeline from the Shang Dynasty (2nd millennium B.C.) through the 20th century.
