The Met’s Rock And Roll Exhibition Reaches A Milestone 500,000 Visitors

Popular Presentation To Remain Open Until Oct. 1 Attendance at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s acclaimed exhibition, “Play It Loud: Instruments of Rock and Roll,” topped 500,000 visitors, an attendance milestone, during the afternoon of Aug. 14. In the 18 weeks since it opened on April 8, the exhibition has drawn many visitors to the museum for the first time. Surveys conducted by the Met’s market research team showed that, of the 500,000 total visitors to the exhibition to date, 12 percent (or 60,000) were first-time visitors to the museum who came specifically to see the exhibition. It is on view through Tuesday, Oct. 1. To celebrate the attendance milestone, a catalogue of the exhibition was presented to a visitor by the show’s curators, Jayson Kerr Dobney, Frederick P. Rose curator in charge of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Met, and Craig J. Inciardi, curator and director of acquisitions of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. About the Exhibition Dedicated entirely to the iconic instruments of rock and roll, this major loan exhibition explores how individual artists used their instruments to create unique sounds and visual identity. Featuring more than 130 instruments dating from 1939 to 2017, the exhibition includes the instruments of artists such as Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Sheryl Crow, Bob Dylan, Lady Gaga, Jimi Hendrix, Joan Jett, John Lennon, Paul McCartney,
Steve Miller, Joni Mitchell, Jimmy Page, Elvis Presley, Prince, Keith Richards, Bruce Springsteen, Ringo Starr, Eddie Van Halen, St. Vincent, and others, as well as vintage posters, stage costumes, and epoch-making videos. The exhibition is made possible by the John Pritzker Family Fund, the Estate of Ralph L. Riehle, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, Diane Carol Brandt, the Paul L. Wattis Foundation, Kenneth and Anna Zankel, and the National Endowment for the Arts. It is organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. By Shawn Surmick On July 15, 2019, Congressional Representative Emanuel Cleaver II, a Democrat who represents Missouri’s 5th Congressional District, sponsored and introduced bill H.R. 3757. The bill is to require the Secretary of the Treasury to mint coins in commemoration of the centennial of the minting of Morgan and Peace silver dollars. Since the last year the Morgan dollar was produced by the United States Mint was 1921 and since the Peace dollar was first introduced and minted in that same year, the bill paves the way for the U.S. Mint to introduce commemorative silver editions of two of the most popular silver coins ever minted in the history of the country. Since the introduction of the bill, support is growing for the passage of the bill and the introduction of the two commemorative coins sometime in 2021. If you are a numismatist or
just someone who has an interest in history, you may wish to reach out to your own congressional representative to help ensure passage of this bill. It is hard to get a bill like this passed, and current estimates place a less than 10 percent chance for this piece of legislation ever becoming law. This is something that the greater coin collecting marketplace needs to reignite interest in numismatics, especially with younger collectors. Since these coins would be offered by the U.S. Mint and composed of silver, they should be quite affordable, should this bill pass. It is nice to see both Congress and the U.S. Mint attempting to create a legacy of commemorative coins that echo the numismatic history of the United States. Back in 2016, the U.S. Mint literally struck gold with the 100-year commemorative gold Mercury Dime that was released as the first of a series of three centennial gold coins. The other two entries in that series were a gold commemorative release of the Standing Liberty Quarter and a Walking Liberty Half Dollar, also done in gold. These coins are beautiful and just as gorgeous as their original silver counterparts that were first introduced in 1916. That said, due to the fact they were comprised of gold, with the Mercury Dime being composed of 1/10 ounce of gold, the Standing Liberty Quarter being composed of a quarter ounce of gold, and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar done in half an ounce of gold, few casual collectors could
afford them. To this very day, these three releases still remain popular with diehard collectors, although demand has certainly subsided to a degree since their 2016 release. For the record, I am not a fan of most mass-produced commemorative coins and bullion coins produced by the U.S. Mint. As a hardcore numismatist, I think collectors are better off collecting the original classic U.S. coins instead. That said, I do own a lot of the more popular commemorative releases, including the just mentioned 2016 editions. I also think it is important for the U.S. Mint and Congress to ensure that the history of our nation’s monetary system is never forgotten in an age where people are more likely to use their smartphones or credit cards to make a purchase than that of actual coins or currency. Reminting the ever popular Morgan and Peace dollars as a commemorative coin is a step in the right direction and helps bring new collectors into the coin collecting hobby. Since the financial crisis of 2008/2009, the run-up of precious metal prices, and their eventual decline, the coin collecting market continually needs some kind of publicity to remind collectors and investors that just because precious metals have remained somewhat flat over the past few years, the greater numismatic market still exists and is well worth investing in. Collectors and investors of numismatic coins have always reaped a dual benefit when choosing to collect and

possibly invest in high quality classic United States coins. Not only is there a precious metal content of the coins in most cases, but the buyer also gets the added benefit of investing into the great numismatic marketplace in which the Professional Numismatics Guild estimates the size of the market at $3.5 to $4 billion dollars, excluding precious metal bullion sales. I have written about the numismatics market in depth and am always glad to see new attention being paid to the market as a whole. Whether that attention comes in the form of new books on the coin collecting market or excellent proposals much like H.R. 3757, I strongly encourage fellow numismatists to do anything they can to help bring the greater numismatic hobby to the collecting forefront. Coins and currency are some of the most historic and culturally significant artifacts that a nation can ever produce, and the study of these vast treasures can teach us not only what a culture valued at the time of their minting and use but also what life was like at that particular period of time in history. Ask any coin or currency collector to tell you what they feel and think of when they hold a 1901 $10 legal tender note or a 1907 Saint Gaudens $20 gold coin. The powerful connection to another time and place can be both mesmerizing and intoxicating.

Heritage Auctions dropped the hammer on more than 2,200 trading card lots, recording more than $8.3 million in a highly competitive online auction, which ran July 18, 19, and 20. The sale contained the first of three 2019 offerings in Part I of the David Hall T206 collection, the most comprehensive assembly of the hobby’s premier tobacco issue. That collection from the founder of Collector’s Universe supplied three sixfigure results to the eyepopping tally, the most astonishing result of the sale being the $252,000 price for the rare Eddie Plank, graded PSA VG 3, more than doubling a competitor’s sale price for an EX 5 example less than two years ago. A Red Background Ty Cobb with a Hindu back commanded $126,000 at VG-EX 4, while the only PSA-graded Walter Johnson Hands at Chest with a Broad Leaf back drew $108,000 at VG-EX-plus 4.5. The well-known T206 cards were issued between 1909 and 1911 through 16 different brands by the American Tobacco Company. The variations are very extensive. Each card had a player on one side and tobacco advertisement on back. Some players had more than one card, but also an ad from a different tobacco company on the back. Various advertisements determine value. “The prices recorded in this sale probably added tens of millions of dollars to the value of the T206 cards held by our clientele, so we expect to be fielding a great deal of consignment calls in the coming weeks,” said Chris Ivy, director of sports auctions for Heritage. “We sold a PSA NM 7 Plank for $690,000 last

Potter & Potter Auctions’ Pop Culture Sale Scores $230,000 Sale Marked Debut For Company’s New Toys And Pop Culture Division Potter and Potter Auctions’ mid-summer sale on July 27 was one hot ticket and marked the debut for the Toys and Pop Culture Division for the Chicago-area auction firm. Prices reported include the company’s 20-percent buyer’s premium. This auction offered a world series caliber selection of baseball cards and related sports merchandise, with several lots taking MVP status. Lot #551, a 1951 PSA VG 3 Bowman Mickey Mantle rookie card, No. 253, was estimated at $1,000-$2,000 and made $5,040. Lot #611, a storage box of N.Y. Yankees cards including 98 autographed cards from the 2004 Upper Deck Classic Scripts, 100-plus autographed cards from the 2003 Upper Deck Yankees Signature Series, and 44 autographed cards from the 2000 Upper Deck Chirography series was estimated at $500$1,000 and traded hands at $2,880. Lot #565, a 1968 PSA NM—MT 8 Topps Mets Rookies Jerry Koosman / Nolan Ryan
card, No. 177, was estimated at $1,000-$2,000 and sold for $3,120, and a Topps N.Y. Yankees baseball card collection, individually sleeved and neatly organized by year or series, estimated at $300$500, realized $2,400. Fine selections of pop culture ephemera also left a lasting impression on bidders. Lot #405, “Fighting Yank,” number 23 from Nedor, battled its way to $1,680 on its $250-$350 estimate. Lot #356, “Batman” number 65 from DC Comics, made $780 on its $150-$250 estimate. And lot #412, “Iron Fist” number 1 from Marvel Comics, put the pedal to the metal. This comic, featuring the epic fight between Iron Fist and Iron Man, accelerated to $300 and had a $50-$100 estimate. Entertainment posters and works of art framed this sale in the best possible way. Over the years he suffered broken ribs, shoulders, arms, a leg, burns, and several concussions,” stated Koch. “Once while inflating a balloon, his clothes caught fire. He suffered burns over his entire body. Yet before he went to the hospital, he insisted on completing his performance for the crowd.”

During the 1890s, a rash known as “barber’s itch” began to spread among the men who were shaved at barber shops. The cause of the rash was due to barbers using the same soap, brush, and mug for all of the men they shaved. As a result, local ordinances were passed mandating that all men shaved at a barber shop have their own soap, brush, and porcelain mug used for shaving. And, these items were to be stored in a rack at the shop. “It didn’t take long for mugs to become highly personalized and decorated with various designs, colors, emblems, and eventually, the owner’s occupation. For many collectors, these various occupational mugs can be highly desirable,” said Mike De Beck, media rep for the National Shaving Mug Collectors Association (NSMCA). “One such mug belonged to Professor C.C. Bonnette, a hot air balloonist and parachutist whose daredevil escapades pre-dated the Wright brothers and whose shaving mug depicts a man dangling from a parachute while a hot air balloon drifts away in the background.” Chris Koch, NSMCA member and owner of the mug, has done extensive research on Bonnette. “In 1893, at the age of 21,” says Koch, “Bonnette, at a New England county fair,

The Emporium is having a customer appreciation night on Thursday, Sept. 5, from 4 to 7 p.m., with free hot dogs for all customers. In America, the year 1893 was an important date in hot dog history. At the Chicago Colombian Exposition, visitors consumed large quantities of the little sausages nestled in a bun. Also in 1893, a German immigrant who owned the St. Louis Browns, a Major League baseball team at that time, introduced the little sausage to the fans, which became standard fare at ball parks. Exhibition Of Ramayana Painting On View At The Met One of the major epic narratives of South Asia literature, the “Ramayana” is the focus of an upcoming exhibition opening at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Drawn from the Met collection and including seven promised gifts, “Sita and Rama: The Ramayana in Indian Painting” will showcase 30 outstanding paintings that narrate the heroic and adventurous tale of Rama’s rescue of his beloved wife, Sita. The works were produced for the Rajput and Pahari courts of north India between the 17th and 19th centuries and will be augmented by four textiles. Highlights of the exhibition, which will be presented in two rotations, include a rare 19thcentury painting titled “Tantric Form of Monkey God Hanuman” that is a new addition to the Met collection. The work is a recent gift from Steven Kossak, and this is the first time it is being displayed publicly. The exhibition is made possible by the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Foundation Fund. The paintings and textiles that will be on view capture the collective visual imagination of court artists in their efforts to give form to the dramatic 2,500-year-old Sanskrit narrative, which consists of more than 24,000 verses. The “Ramayana” is attributed to the poet-sage Valmiki (ca. 400 B.C.) and has long been popular across South and Southeast Asia. It recounts the life of Rama, a legendary prince, whose wife, Sita, was abducted by the evil king Ravenna. Together with his brother Lakshmana and his ally Hanuman, Rama assembled a massive army of monkeys and bears and traveled to Sri Lanka to confront
Swann Galleries is poised to offer a rare look at Herman Melville’s personal library in a timely sale that was announced on the eve of the author’s bicentennial, which was recognized on Aug. 1. Two volumes of Greek and Roman classics owned and heavily annotated by Melville are set to come across the block in a Fine Books and Manuscripts auction on Thursday, Oct. 10. In March of 1849, a year prior to Moby Dick’s publication, Melville purchased a 37-volume set of classics from the publishing company Harper and Brothers. Here, making their market debut, are “Euripides, Juvenal and Persius” in the only two known surviving volumes from the set once owned by the author. Melville’s autograph can be found in the volume containing “Juvenal and Persius,” and all are marked with numerous annotations illuminating which passages
were of interest to the author. Also featured throughout are brief observations, most notably his annotation to Samuel Johnson’s

Félix Buhot, one of the most original printmakers in France during the last quarter of the 19th century, will be the subject of a new exhibit, “Fantasy and Reality: The World According to Félix Buhot.” This exhibition, selected entirely from a private collection, examines the full range of Buhot’s graphic effort, from his highly imaginative intaglios to the more somber lithographs, a medium to which he turned near the end of his career. Also featured are several drawings and paintings related to the prints. Organized by the Palmer Museum of Art, the exhibit will run from Sept. 29 to Dec. 15. How Long Does It Take To Sell On eBay? “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich There is no precise answer to this question. Some individuals sell items faster than others. It takes longer to sell differing items than similar items. And professional eBay sellers will sell much faster than rookies. However, based on my experience, it takes the average person approximately one hour per item to sell on eBay. And here’s why. Once you have selected an item to sell, you’ll have to do the following steps, and this assumes that you already know how to sell on eBay: Item description. You’ll have to think about how you want to describe your item, making certain to include all important details and being 100 percent accurate on condition. If you miss a flaw, it will almost always be returned, and/or you’ll receive negative feedback. Digital images. You’ll have to take good pictures to sell on eBay. Image editing. You’ll have to edit your images, which does take time. Upload descriptions and images to eBay. This isn’t difficult, but it adds to the time. Respond to questions. Any questions must be answered in a timely fashion, so you’ll need to pay daily attention to your emails and your “My eBay Dealer Dashboard.” Will your item sell? Most items listed for sale on eBay fail to sell. And regardless of whether your item sells or not, you’ve done a lot of work up to this point.
If your item sells, you’ll need to get paid. Once you get paid, the real works starts. Timewise, you’re about halfway done. Now you must meet eBay shipping standards. All sold items must be shipped fairly quickly. Whether your business is Amazon.com, with thousands of people working in your fulfillment department, or a mom and pop operation working at your kitchen table, the requirements are very similar. Get it out on schedule or be penalized. And if you fail to ship fast enough, you may receive negative feedback from an impatient buyer, and you could lose your eBay seller status as well. Locate the right shipping box. Larger businesses have ample shipping supplies at their fingertips. Smaller eBay sellers may have to go dumpster-diving to locate an appropriate shipping container. Box it up. You must package the item so it will safely arrive at its destination. Ship it. Whether you go to the Post Office or a UPS Store, this can take the most time. Driving to and from, and then waiting in line, can sometimes take nearly one hour alone, at least in my home area. But you’re still not done. Now you cross your fingers and hope the buyer will be happy with their purchase. If you’ve done your due diligence, most will be happy. But if you’ve missed even a little scratch on a 100-year-old item or if you’re a little late in shipping, you’ll be hearing about it and possibly having
the item returned. Then you will have to refund all money, sometimes including their return shipping fees, and all your work will have been for naught. Even if any shipping delay is the fault of the USPS or UPS, it doesn’t matter, you’re still responsible. Selling on eBay is not for the faint-of-heart. The rewards can be wonderful, but is all the work and aggravation involved worth it? Some say yes, while others say no. And this doesn’t yet take into account any of the eBay scams that you may have to deal with. The “eBay Switcharoo,” the “eBay ShakeDown,” and the “eBay Refund without Return,” are just a few of the scams you may have to deal with. We’ll be covering these in future “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute columns. What’s it worth? We recently sold some photographs purchased for $20 at a local flea market for $1,100 on eBay. The buyer was from England. How else could we have found that buyer Without eBay? On that transaction we absolutely loved eBay. On another transaction, we purchased some photos, also for $20 at a flea market, and they sold for $60 on eBay. The buyer claimed to be unhappy, and we refunded the $60, but the buyer never returned our photos and refused to respond to our calls or emails, eBay support offered no support, and we eventually gave up and accepted the loss rather than waste any more time on it. On that transaction, we hated the eBay system, which favored
the buyer over the seller. However, whether you love it or hate it, eBay does have its advantages. And it’s not going away.
