Ohio’s Zoar Harvest Festival And Antiques Show Celebrates 45 Years
AAN Current News
Regional Show Has Potential To Draw From Wider Audience By Karl Pass The 45th annual Harvest Festival in the historic village of Zoar, located in rural east-central Ohio, was held July 28 and 29. There were 62 dealers in two large tents for the Antiques Show and 26 craftspeople setup for the seperate Artisan Show. The festival, run by the Zoar Community Association, used to be held the first weekend of August, but two years ago, the group moved the event up one week to not conflict with the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. This was a wise move. Ancient Egyptian Gilded Coffin Featured In Met Exhibition A highly ornamented ancient Egyptian coffin from the first century B.C. is the spectacular centerpiece of the exhibition, “Nedjemankh and His Gilded Coffin,” on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The recently acquired work, which was inscribed for a high-ranking priest of the ram-headed god Heryshef of Herakleopolis, is displayed with 70 other works, also from the Met collection, through April 21, 2019. The exhibition is made possible by the Daniel P. Davison Fund and is arranged thematically to illuminate the role of Nedjemankh as a priest in ancient Egypt, his burial, and the decoration on the coffin. Distinctive installations in the exhibition include an imitation leopard skin once worn by a priest and a display of funerary objects depicted in a scene on the coffin. Made of cartonnage (layers of textile stiffened with glue and covered with plaster), the coffin has an elaborately decorated surface that is sheathed in gold. Scenes and texts in thick gesso relief were intended to protect and guide Nedjemankh on his journey from death to eternal life as a transfigured spirit. According to ancient texts, the use of gold in the coffin assisted the deceased in being reborn in the next life. On the interior of the lid are thin sheets of silver foil. To the ancient Egyptians, the gold and silver could symbolize the flesh and bones of the gods or the sun and the moon; on a more specific level, they were associated with the eyes of the cosmic deity Heryshef, whom Nedjemankh served.

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Wearing Your Antiques
The other week, I was up in Adamstown, Pa., for a brief blitz of the antique malls. Always fun, although our time was really limited this time. My wife Kim’s son was getting married, and I had a plan in the back of my mind. There are several wonderful jewelry dealers who handle high quality items at very reasonable prices. From one came a lovely opal pendant that Kim will cherish as a memory of a special weekend. During the drive back to Williamsburg, Va., we talked about antique jewelry as truly one of the best things that you can collect or buy for others. Regular readers know that I am a huge fan of antique jewelry.
years, will you say that it was a good buy? So what are my suggestions? 1) Opals are always in style and worthy of collecting. Good quality fire can be easily discerned. 2) Garnets are not just for Victorians. I love garnets, and they come in a wide range of colors and cuts. Priced quite reasonably, they are definitely one to buy. 3) Diamonds are a girl’s best friend. I continue to be amazed at the high quality diamonds that are often offered for sale. And I remind folks that the majority of diamond engagement rings today are made from recycled and recut diamonds. I also am a big advocate of men’s antique jewelry. French cuffs are always elegant and you can wear a wide range of cufflinks, from fancy to funky to formal. And a pair of Tiffany or period gold knot cufflinks never goes out of style. Vintage watches, signet rings

Delaware Coast Antiques Show And Sale To Be Held Sept. 7, 8, And 9 The 20th annual Delaware Coast Antiques Show and Sale is scheduled for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Sept. 7, 8, and 9, at the Convention Center located at 229 Rehoboth Ave. in Rehoboth Beach, Del. This popular seaside resort and year-round community is situated about halfway between Washington, D.C., and New York City, within an easy drive of Baltimore and Philadelphia. The annual event will feature 35 selected exhibitors offering an impressive range of 18thand 19th-century American and English period and country furniture and accessories, including fine early china,
pottery and glassware, stoneware, Oriental carpets, Chinese export porcelain, quilts and other textiles, English accessories such as tea caddies, fireplace equipment, estate jewelry, and vintage poster art, among much more. According to show manager Melvin Arion, this event has a reputation as both a “collector and dealer show,” meaning both visiting collectors and antiques dealers can find reasonably priced merchandise. Arion has done an excellent job of bringing together exhibitors who offer an interesting and diverse assortment of antiques and collectibles. In short, just about any show visitor can
find a “new” treasure. In addition, staging the event the weekend following Labor Day means the summer crowds and heavy traffic are gone, but the warm days and evenings remain, making it an ideal time to be in Rehoboth Beach. There will be seven new exhibitors, including Toby Chittum of Charley Horse Antiques, Partlow and Janet Caroon of Uppity Mermaid Antiques, Judith Lesser of Antiques From Home, Dark Horse Antiques, G. A. Cirillo, Roland Forster, and Adorn Jewelry. Show hours both Friday and Saturday will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Plenty of

Antique jewelry is usually a fraction of the price of new jewelry. The quality of pieces is generally much higher than new, and it retains value far longer than new. The other week, I was in a mall in Virginia killing time while the girls got their hair done. I wandered past one of the retail jewelry stores and was shocked at the prices for 10-carat jewelry. Truly, it was marked up within an inch of itself, the quality was poor, and I suspected that most of the stones were reworked older cuts. Of course, many people say that wearing secondhand jewelry is bad luck (says who) and tasteless (no, actually tasteful). I think that wearing antique jewelry reflects a smart buyer and wearer. It is a great gift and one that truly will not go down in value. The trick with antique jewelry is really to determine whether the piece is a good buy or not. Fundamentally, a good buy is not about the now but about the future. In five
and money clips are all worth a hunt. Finally, I encourage readers to not only think about jewelry for spouses but also as a gift to children. Learning to wear jewelry is something to start younger children on at the proper age. Miss Mary, my youngest, is wearing her first ring and has it on all the time as she learns about jewelry. Her first piece was a sterling silver ring from Wales dating from the turn of the century. It was under $10 on eBay and is something that she loves and wears every single day.

Revolutionary War. Richard Holcombe’s homestead, situated along the Delaware, served as a crossing point for American troops. The property was used on at least two occasions as General Washington’s headquarters, first in 1777, and again in 1778. The diary of James McHenry makes reference to the June 1778 stay, “Head Quarters at one Holcombs in the Jersey.” He also mentions that George Washington’s expenses were paid to Richard Holcombe in the sum of “£10.17.6” for “38 dinners,” “bread butter &

other necessaries” and “Trouble &c. made in the House.” An original portrait of Richard Holcombe will be in the auction. Attributed to an itinerant artist, it is believed that the canvas has never been taken out of its original frame to check for a signature. A second Holcombe family portrait is also assumed to have been painted by a traveling artist and features a charming little girl holding a doll. A third painting, also in its original frame with no signature showing, depicts a sleigh scene. The scene was featured in a print advertising calendar, also in the sale. Featured on day two will be a George Rea 1796 tall case clock. Rea was an early Hunterdon County, N.J., clockmaker, one of four Colonial clockmakers in Flemington, N.J., and an important part of Hunterdon County history. This clock is complete with moon dial, decorated face, and case finials and has been in the family since it was first made. It will hold an estimate of $3,000-$5,000. A variety of mantle and steeple clocks are also included in the sale. Several antique shotguns will be sold, including two mid-19th century double barrel muzzle-loading ball and cap shotguns, both with intricate engravings. A Bentley & Sons with patch box and original ram rod and a Hollis and Sheath London Fine Twist will be sold. A small variety of antique brass and copper powder horns will also be auctioned off. Period furniture in the auction dates to the 18th century with an early American two-drawer work table estimated at $700-$900. Also of interest are two Chippendale pieces, a walnut blanket chest, and a walnut tall chest

A two-day auction with historical provenance tied to both local and American Revolutionary War history will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 22 and 23, when a large part of the contents of the Richard Holcombe homestead is auctioned off on-site in Lambertville, N.J. Alfred’s Auctions LLC will be conducting the sale. The property, now owned by the seventh generation of the Holcombe family, was originally purchased in 1705 by John Holcombe, who was considered Lambertville’s first resident. He built the stone house in 1724 on a large piece of land along Route 29 and eventually passed it along to his son, Richard. As the population of Lambertville increased and travelers began coming through, Emanuel Coryell purchased property for a tavern and inn as well as a charter to run a ferry service across the Delaware River. Those settlements where the ferry ran between Lambertville and New Hope, Pa., were called Coryell’s Ferry. Holcombe’s property was part of it. Then came the

Kid Stuff: Children In Ceramic Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson For ceramics designers of the 1940s and ’50s, good things came in small packages. While almost any subject suitable for sculpting offered inspiration for those who filled America’s store shelves, the most popular were those small packages, figurines of children. From the early days of World War II, well into the decline of domestic giftware firms in the early 1960s, winsome ceramic kids made homes across the country their personal playground. What accounted for this abundance of urchins? To begin with, the onset of war meant that imports dwindled to a trickle. Among the many things no longer available were inexpensive knickknacks from overseas. Now, if decorative items were desired, they had to be produced domestically. And, while certainly nowhere near the top of the priorities list, giftware production was actively encouraged as a wartime moralebooster. Fortunately, plenty of talented, often untrained, artisans were waiting in the wings to assist with that moraleboosting. Prior to the war, their talent often went unrecognized, pursued only as a hobby, perhaps to beautify the artist’s own home or for gift-giving purposes. Now,

Small “home studios” that began in garages, kitchens, or tool sheds soon expanded to fullscale factory production. Along the way, many heretofore unknowns and their work achieved acclaim. Among them were Betty Harrington of Ceramic Arts Studio (her previous job was as a secretary with Wisconsin’s Department of Entomology); Betty Lou Nichols (she painted her first figurines over the kitchen sink); and Florence Ward, of Florence Ceramics (her first

Collecting Antique Sewing Machines By Gene Bishop
Fig. 1
Fig. 6 Fig. 5
Fig. 3 Advanced collectors, then as well as today, are looking for the earlier versions, notably the machines manufactured between 1850 to 1875. This includes treadle (fig. 1), portable hand crank (fig. 2) and fulllength cabinet models (fig. 3). The treadle machines usually have a solid walnut table with a small box covering the head. The machine heads on these early treadle models were much smaller and crude compared to machines manufactured
from the 1880s and beyond. A highly desirable, rare machine is defined as one that was produced in small numbers (less than five) or a low production model of a more commonly found machine. For example, the Landfear treadle machine was manufactured in 1857, and only one is presently known. Today, a machine such as this is considered extremely rare and could command a hefty price. Another machine in this class is the Singer Family Machine (nicknamed the “Turtleback), which was manufactured for only a twoyear period (1858-60). This was the first Singer designed for home use but proved not to function well. The treadle

design is very ornate with intertwined leaves as found on trees. The Singer No. 1 (fig. 4) was Singer’s first machine, which was manufactured from 1851 to ’58. This was a very heavy machine and was typically used commercially vs. for domestic home use. Although a number of these machines exist, being the earliest Singer makes it a soughtafter example. American sewing machines were first manufactured in quantity for home use beginning in the 1850s. An example of an early mass-produced machine is the Grover and Baker portable produced from 1854 to ’59 (fig. 5 and 6). In good condition, it can command a price of $1,000 to $2,000. A later version of the Grover and Baker portable (fig. 7) was

In 1984, I wrote several articles for various antique trade publication alerting the general public that American sewing machines were becoming quite collectible and were experiencing a growing market. At that time, there were only several serious collectors, including myself, searching in earnest for early machines. At the present, there are still a number of us searching for these bygone mechanical devices.
everything. An early machine with no significant damage to the wood and treadle base and with most of the original gilt and decorations to the machine head intact will command the highest prices. Machines in poor condition are worth significantly less. Mass-produced treadle and portable machines from the late 1860s and 1870s, such as the Wheeler and Wilson, the Grover and Baker, Wilson, Wilcox and Gibbs, and American, to name a few, can be acquired at values under $500. Full cabinet models will command higher prices. Sewing machines of the period of 1880 to the early 1900s are very common and are not seriously collected. The circa 1915 Singer (fig. 8) is an example of the typical, common fold down head variety manufactured at the turn of the 20th century. Machines of this period are usually made of oak veneer with two or more drawers on each side. Shiver me timbers, there’s nothing like a good pirate movie! A longtime staple of Hollywood action fare, pirate movies date back to the earliest days of the cinema, providing viewers with plenty of seafaring adventure, swashbuckling thrills, romance and always a hint of intrigue. Here are 10 great pirate movies and just some of the valuable paper and advertising treasures they generated. Ready to walk the plank down Hollywood pirate movie history? 1. “Treasure Island” (1934). Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic 1883 novel was faithfully adapted for the big screen in 1934 by MGM. Directed by Victor Fleming, this action story of piracy and buried treasure stars Wallace Beery as Long John Silver, Jackie Cooper as young Jim Hawkins and Lionel Barrymore as Billy Bones. “Treasure Island” was lovingly

Based on the 1812 novel by Johann David Wyss, Walt Disney’s “Swiss Family Robinson” stormed into movie theaters during the 1960 Christmas season. Expertly directed by Ken Annakin, the movie stars John Mills, Dorothy McGuire, James MacArthur, Tommy Kirk and Kevin Corcoran as the Robinson family, with Janet Munro and Sessue Hayakawa also on board. Burt Lancaster turns in an athletic performance as Captain Vallo, a pirate adventurer in the late 1700s Caribbean, in this rousing action picture directed by Robert Siodmak. “Swashbuckling sea fables get a good-natured spoofing in ‘The Crimson Pirate,” with Burt Lancaster providing the muscles and dash for the takeoff,” reported the Hollywood trade paper Variety (12/31/51). The big three-sheet poster (41-by-81inches) provides a grand spectacle for collectors, featuring a bare-chested Burt Lancaster swinging from a rope and waving the Jolly Roger. Originally printed in two sections, one example in folded very fine condition sold at auction for $119.50. 5. “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” (2003). Johnny Depp, in the role of pirate captain Jack Sparrow, stars in this $140 million spectacular directed by Gore Verbinski which launched the wildly successful “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie franchise. Also in the cast are Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley. There’s lots of action in this one, as Depp and Bloom team up to rescue the governor’s fair-haired daughter from the evil clutches of buccaneer Rush and his cursed, undead crew. “Finally, there’s a big-budget popcorn movie that delivers what moviegoers hunger for:

Italian Marble Shrouded Skull Sculpture Sells For $29,000 At Kaminski’s Summer Auction Kaminski Auctions held its summer auction on the weekend of July 14 and 15 at its gallery in Beverly, Mass. The top lot of the sale was an early 19th-century sculpture of a carved marble shrouded skull from an estate in Rome. With an estimate of $3,000-$5,000, the statue, standing 22.5 inches tall, was hotly contested, both on the phones and internet, before selling for $29,000. Prices reported are hammer prices and do not include buyer’s premium. A pair of circa 1950 platinum, diamond, and cabochon ruby earrings with approximately 32 grams troy weight from a West Palm Beach, Fla., estate sold for $8,000 against an estimate of $2,500-$3,500, while a vintage Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust calendar wristwatch in original condition sold for $6,000. Paintings from the collection of David and Janet Grey of Wenham, Mass., were featured in the sale and did well. In particular, a genre painting of a mother and daughter at the water’s edge by the Pennsylvania artist Howard Logan Hildebrandt sold for $8,000. The Cape Ann paintings from the collection sold well, with local collectors coming to preview and bid on day
two. A Max Kuehne “Rockport Harbor From the Headlands” oil-on-canvas, with its original Max Kuehne hand-carved silver leaf frame, achieved $7,500. Other paintings included a David Hatfield, titled “Spring Smith Street,” with a North Shore Art Association label and a Ken Knowles, “View From Governors Park Gloucester.” A landscape painting by Paul Strisik ANA, titled “Autumn Jewels,” and a Wayne Morrell landscape of “Spring Stream Jeffersonville, VT,” both achieved $3,250. California paintings from the collection also garnered a lot of interest on the internet, with a Ray Roberts “Winter Sun” oil-on-canvas mounted on wood panel selling for $3,350. An Emile Gruppe oilon-canvas winter scene of a woodcutter sold for $4,500. Modern art in the sale included a Giulio Turcato abstract work, circa 1960s, that sold for $4,750. One of the rarest, circa 1865 American Civil War decks of playing cards complete with 52 cards, made by the A. Dougherty Company of 26 Beeker St., N.Y., sold for $3,250 to a Civil War collector. The set of playing cards was described as an Army and Navy Civil War deck

of playing cards, titled “The Monitor and the Merrimac.” The ace of Monitor and ace of Merrimac both bore the maker’s name. The ace of Monitor read, “To Commemorate The Greatest Event in Naval History, the Substitution of Iron For Wood.” The four suits included the Monitors, Merrimacs, Soaves, and Drummers. The top decorative art lot was a portrait of Czar Alexander, oil-on-porcelain, in a Russian silver Fabergé frame hallmarked 88 (for .916 silver), with marks for the master Michael Perchin (1860-1903), St. Petersburg, Russia. The portrait and frame, one of the top lots viewed on the KaminskiLive website, was from a Lviv, Ukrainian estate. It brought $3,200. The top furniture lot were a pair of 18th-century Irish Chippendale mahogany side tables with finely carved ball and claw feet. They sold to a bidder in the salesroom for $4,000. How Much Are These Three Coins Worth?
Two-Day Online-Only Decorative Arts Auction Planned For Pook & Pook On Aug. 29 And 30
“What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich
Over 1,500 Lots Will Be Sold By Kaitlyn Julian Downingtown, Pa., auction house Pook & Pook Inc. is fresh off summer vacation and ready to jump into the fall auction season with an immense two-day online-only Decorative Arts Sale. Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 29, and concluding on Thursday Aug. 30, the sale will feature over 1,500 lots and encompass every inch of American and Continental decorative arts. Online bidding for both days will begin at 9 a.m., exclusively on bidsquare.com. Pook & Pook buyers have come to expect a vast assortment of early American furniture and folk art from the Pennsylvania auction house, and this decorative arts auction will not disappoint. Items will include velvet theorems, folk portraits, fraktur, primitive landscapes, silhouettes, needlework, and pocketsized portraits. N e a r countless lots of textiles will be on offer, with
dozens of quilts, coverlets, and hooked rugs. An impressive collection of American pewter is a highlight, as well as a selection of painted country Americana, Native American basketry, redware, and stoneware. Items on offer from further abroad include Gaudy Dutch and Gaudy Welsh porcelain, Oriental carpets, blue and white Staffordshire, and Chinese porcelain and jade. Collections from various estates will comprise a large portion of the two-day sale. A large consignment came from Santa Fe, N.M., and items from estates across Chester, Bucks, Berks, and Lancaster counties will also be sold. Among the whimsical collections of everyday early American objects include a

sign painter’s toolkit, a Kentucky bluegrass seeder, and a Sheraton shaving mirror. The assortment of objects on offer is endlessly varied, such as a Regency mahogany cheese wheel, a sterling silver muffineer, and a green painted squirrel cage, all just a sampling of the eclectic and intriguing mix of objects in the auction. Gallery exhibitions are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Interested bidders are encouraged to contact Pook & Pook Inc. at info@pookandpook.com or 610-269-4040 with questions regarding condition reports, bidder registration, or online bidding. If you had three U.S. coins in your pocket, including a Gold Half Eagle, Gold Eagle, and Gold Double Eagle, how much money would you have? From circa 1795-1933, the U.S. Mint produced various gold coins that served as legal tender, and each had a “face value.” The U.S. Gold Eagle has a $10 face value, while a Double Eagle has a $20 face value, and the Half Eagle carries a $5 face value. So the total “face value” of these three would be $35. However, it would obviously be foolish to sell these gold coins today for face value
because the gold content value is considerably higher. Each of these coins is 90 percent gold, and the Gold Eagle has .48375 troy oz. of pure .9999 gold, the Double Eagle has .96750 troy oz. of gold, and the Half Eagle has .24187 oz. of gold. With gold currently trading at roughly $1,250 per troy oz., the total 1.69312 troy oz. of gold in the three would have a scrap value of approximately $1,600. What’s it worth? Depending upon the coin, year, mint mark, and condition, the “numismatic” or coin collector value should be higher than the scrap value and often considerably higher if the coins are in
“mint state” or “uncirculated” condition. For assistance in evaluating coins, readers can call Mike Ivankovich at 215-264-4304.

New Memoir On Antiques Business, “Selling Dead People’s Things,” Released The recently released book, “Selling Dead People’s Things,” is a wry, behind-thecurtain peek into the world of antiques and their obsessive owners, while still alive and after their passing. An amusing observer of the human condition, author Duane Scott Cerny entertains in 25 life illuminating, scary, sad, or frightfully funny resale tales and essays. “You just can’t say to the bereaved, ‘I’m sorry for your loss, but are those crucifixes for sale?’ (Well, you can, but
it’s how you say it.)” Whether processing the estate of a hoarding beekeeper, disassembling the retro remains of an infamous haunted hospital, or conducting an impromptu appraisal during a shiva gone disturbingly wrong, every day is a twisted treasure hunt for this 21st century antiques dealer. While digging deep into the basements, attics, and souls of the most interesting collectors imaginable, traveling from one odd house call
to the curious next, resale predicaments will confound the reader’s every turn. The book includes over 25 true tales of a veteran antiques dealer, chronicling countless house calls, valuations, treasure hunts, and more. Insight on the multi-billion dollar business that is resale and why brick and mortar retail isn’t dead, despite what others may perceive. For more information, readers may visit www.selling deadpeoplesthings.com.
