“The Lighter Side Of Collecting!” New Book Features 200 Of John Stinger’s New Yorker-Style Cartoons FRIDAY JUNE 17, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 25

“Grandmas Moses: American Modern” To Be On View At Shelburne Museum Exhibition Will Offer New Look At The American Legend

“The Lighter Side of Collecting!” is a new book by professional cartoonist and seasoned collector John Stinger. Published and distributed by Tanner Publishing, the book features 200 of Stinger’s New Yorker-style cartoons and 60-plus pages of quirky humor about the joy of chasing vintage stuff for fun and (sometimes) profit. Stinger takes the reader on a laughing trip with more twists and turns than a Victorian settee. Designed to appeal to both young and experienced collectors, dealers, auctioneers, appraisers, flea marketers, show promoters, and pickers, the book is delightfully family-friendly, non-offensive and promises to entertain anyone who wheels and deals (or trades) in treasures and other magnificient possessions. From his New Jersey studio, Stinger’s cartoons can seen in leading publications serving the antiques and collectibles market. He sold his first cartoon about antiques in 1973 and in 1992 published his first book about collecting classics. His general line of

Co-organized with Bennington Museum in Vermont, the exhibition showcases more than 60 paintings, works on paper, and related materials by Moses alongside work by other 19th- and 20th-century folk and modern artists. “Grandma Moses: American Modern” will be on view at Shelburne Museum in

Shelburne, Vt., from Saturday, June 18 through Thursday, Oct. 20. “Grandma Moses is best known for paintings of simple farm life and the rural countryside that established her reputation as a wildly popular latter-day folk artist,” said Shelburne Museum Director Thomas Denenberg. “This exhibition reexamines her work and explores the way she emerged onto the national stage both as a product of and foil to mid-century American modernism.” Grandma Moses: American Modern explores the work of the beloved self-taught American artist Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses (1860-1961), whose nostalgic

The Lititz Historical Foundation will present the popular Lititz Antiques Show at the Warwick Middle School in Lititz, Pa., on Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25. Founded in 1964, the show is Lancaster County’s longest running antique show. The Warwick Middle School is located directly behind the high school at 104 Maple Street and has proven to be an excellent new venue for this

quality event. This show serves as a major fundraiser for the Lititz Historical Foundation benefiting its mission and upkeep of the historic 1792 residence of Moravian Johannes Mueller. Like other quality regional shows, such as the Antiques in the Valley show, the Elverson show, and the Kempton show, the Lititz show is a buying show where good material comes out. Promoted as an “old time country show” the roster of nearly 50 dealers price to sell and present a wide range of quality country material, including painted furniture, ceramics, textiles, holiday items, lighting, baskets, woodenware, tin, iron, and folk art. The show attracts dealers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and both New England and the South. One-third of the exhibiting dealers have done the show for at least a decade. Several are in their second or third decade of Continued on page 2
