The CAS Collectors club is for anyone with an interest in the work of the Ceramic Arts Studio. The club is excited to announce this year’s CAS Collectors Convention will take place Saturday, Aug. 24, in Madison, Wis. The convention theme, “The CAS Magical Mystery Tour,” celebrates the magical appeal of Ceramic Arts Studio’s many figurines. CAS creations brightened homes from coast to coast during the 1940s and ’50s, still brighten hearts today, and will continue to brighten collectors’ hearts for decades to come. From 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., convention attendees will take in the Wisconsin Pottery Association Show and Sale at the Alliant Energy Center. Later, all will gather at Madison’s Howard Johnson Plaza for convention festivities. Activities and décor will pay tribute to the studio’s illustrious heritage. I have been involved in a project lately that has led me into the deep bowels of my library. Having moved a fair bit over the last decade, I have added and subtracted books on a regular basis. When I was in Virginia, I had a lot of the standard references on Southern architecture and decorative arts. When we moved, those books were given to good friends, with just a few traveling with me. That has been my experience with much of my library. My books on New Mexican folk art stayed with my curator at the Millicent Rogers Museum. The project that I was working on was complex and involved researching really obscure items, so I dug into it with great gusto, using my library and ordering several new books online to finish my work. Many of the standard

The items I was studying were not identical to book items, so does that make them more desirable because of rarity or less desirable because they do not have a twin in a catalog? It’s an interesting question and one that haunts me. I am a firm believer in following your head and heart in collecting and not having to match a museum collection. I have acquired cool items that made me money, but more often than not the items that I sell are seen as aberrations and thus sell for little. The power of the book is so powerful for many collectors that they just have to own the one illustrated on page “x.” Collecting should be about building your eye and an understanding for the items you look at. Using a book solely as your guide is useful, but ultimately I would challenge people to break away from that and work on their taste and views. Take the risk, acquire the oddball, make a

references that all of us use are catalogs of either museum or private collections. The latter are usually when the museum has exhibited those items. As I read through the catalog and studied the images trying to get a match for the items that I was researching, I had a sudden, rather painful epiphany. So many of the items looked the same from catalog to catalog. In fact, they were nearly identical. This brought to mind how many collectors I have met who want to have something just like what is shown in the books, and so they work to acquire nearly identical items. Such a practice raises two concerns to me. First is whether someone is making modern copies of the old stuff to exploit that desire of collectors wanting the one that is just like it. I am sure it happens, as we have all seen “discoveries” of items purported to be identical originals to ones in books. Yeah, right! I recall a colleague who wrote a book on his primary subject of research. Fearful of copies based upon the items in his book, he made the listed/published dimensions smaller

By Anita Stratos You don’t have to be a pipe smoker to appreciate the artistic beauty of meerschaum pipes. Requiring skilled carving techniques, these sculpted works of art are sometimes referred to as the “king of pipes.” The pipes are created from light, porous, clay-like rock that’s brittle when dry, extracted by trained miners using hand tools from underground mines found mainly in Turkey. Expert carvers then soak chunks of meerschaum in water to make it softer, allowing them to carve anything from simple designs to intricate scenes. Although it’s widely accepted that meerschaum began being used as material for crafting pipes in 1723, some claim there are some records suggesting earlier discoveries of meerschaum pipes in Vienna. Meerschaum itself has been mined for 2,000 years and was used to make utensils and other objects. Meerschaum pipes are made in two ways: from block meerschaum or pressed
meerschaum. Block meerschaum, when solid blocks of meerschaum are hand carved into pipes, is considered preferable both for smoking and collecting. Pressed meerschaum, which is much less expensive than block, is made from leftover meerschaum dust, shavings and chips. These pieces are then bonded together with an adhesive. A third type of pipe being passed off as meerschaum by some sellers is made of resin and doesn’t contain any meerschaum pieces at all. Meerschaum collectors and smokers classify these fakes as “meersham,” though some aficionados also put pressed meerschaum in that category. Whether or not to include pressed meerschaum in the category of “fakes” is contested among members of the meerschaum community. Pressed resin pipes began being made in the 1970s and are sometimes misrepresented and sold as meerschaum. The person responsible for first making them didn’t call them meerschaum, but rather sold them with the name “hydrostone.” He used his own antique meerschaum pipes to make the molds, so the shapes and depictions are more convincing, since the subject matters and carving would be in keeping with authentic pipes from other time periods. A natural-born Hollywood rebel, both on and off the screen, Marlon Brando appeared in a total of 39 full-length theatrical films during his illustrious career, beginning with “The Men” (1950) and ending with “The Score” (2001). It is thought that the pocket watch was first invented in the 16th century, and its usage became widespread with the help of the later transportation industry, in particular, the railroads, and the need to keep the trains running safely and on time. Pocket watches include a case and movement, which were usually made by different companies, which means that the serial numbers on both will often be different. Lower serial numbers can often be more valuable than higher serial numbers. Cases hold the movement and can be made of gold (10k14k-18k), gold fill, gold plate, sterling silver, or silverplate, among other materials. If a case is marked 10k-14k-18k or some other gold marking such as “585,” the case is gold and by itself will have precious metal value. If a case is marked “Warranted 20 Years” or something similar, the case is gold plate, and they are “warranting” that the gold plate won’t wear off the case in that span of time. Movements are the interior clock parts that make the watch keep time, and movements by better makers can often be more valuable than the case. A good movement without a case can always find a replacement case. “Jewels” were used in the movements, and more jewels are typically better than fewer jewels. While the normal number of jewels is 15-21, King has seen a watch with as many as 38 jewels. Elgin, Waltham and

Pocket watches by luxury makers such as Patek Philippe and Breguet are in demand and can be worth large sums. Tiffany also marketed fine pocket watches, but relatively few were actually made by Tiffany. Enhancements such as enamel and etched case designs, or fine gemstones, can also add to value. Woven of mountain goat hair in what has been called one of the most complex weaving techniques in the world, this is typical of the kind of garment that would have been worn by a chief during potlach (giftgiving feast) ceremonies. Chilkat weaving can be applied to a number of items, including blankets, robes, dance tunics, aprons, shirts, bags and wall hangings. Chilkat weaving often includes a long wool fringe that sways when the person case, movement, and special enhancements will all determine value. And don’t forget the scrap value of the gold.
